"He drained me for years...so long I lost count. Stealing my pixie dust. All my happy thoughts...all my joy. No more magic." She frowned.

Hikari was fast asleep in her bed at the orphanage, cuddling her fairy doll. All of her friends got adopted, but she was the only one left. She felt so sad and alone.

Suddenly, she heard tapping on the window and went to look

One family, the Darling family came into the orphanage, and Jane took a look at Hikari being alone. She thought she could use a friend. “Mama, can we take her?” Jane asked.

Wendy saw Hikari, and felt bad for her. “You’ll be free to come with us.” She said to Hikari. “You won’t ever be alone again.” Jane said to her new sister.

Peter Pan hyper fixation time

So I really got into Peter Pan recently, I came across a post on Tumblr about Robin Williams being Peter Pan in Hook (1991) and was really excited cause Robin Williams? Playing an adult version of Peter Pan? Sounds like a perfect mix. But like, I didn't remember what happened in the Disney movie and at the same time didn't want to watch the Disney movie again so I watched the 2003 live-action one (my favorite Peter Pan movie now). Anyway after seeing both movies I sorta started reading and watching other Peter Pan stuff. Including various videos below the cut.

Im 2/3rds of the way through Peter Pan and the Starcatchers.

A side note about me, I like tabletops and forum rps, and wanted to channel all the things I found on Peter into a character. So imma share some of my notes that embody my thoughts on the character.

Overall I went with a story-like telling, mimicking the way the 1911 story is written. (I'm cutting out the first paragraph cause it is mostly set up for the rest and parts that are more story-set, will note those)

Personality section

Peter wasn’t a bad boy; so early he could only know of and believe in the love of his parents. But he is a silly boy, for so easily did he flee his nursery believing in the way many children do, that his parents will always be there. [cut parts] and a new baby was in his room. It was the first thing Peter lost belief in, that parents will always wait with open arms for their children.

The thing about Peter Pan is that there is no concrete way to tell his story after this. There is almost always a Wendy and a Tinkerbell, always a Captain Hook. Sometimes there are girls on Neverland, sometimes it is just lost boys. In some stories, Peter is ignorance unto malice, but in others, he just doesn’t know better but can learn.

So why don’t we tell another story?

Peter is a heroic boy, he takes lost children and gives them a home in Neverland. A lost child could be anything really; silly boys that have fallen out of their prams (girls are far too smart for this to happen, so it's always boys), left behind, or metaphorically abandoned in the homes of evil adults. But the lost children don’t always stay. You see, Peter is a morally ambiguous boy–for children are innocent and heartless. And Peter, the eternal boy, will never really know love or family, the lost boys only being a temporary family. For all his heroics, some simple pleasures will never be known by him.

Just as Peter’s story includes a Neverland and a Hook and sometimes a Wendy. Peter’s story includes themes of growing up, and sometimes the eternal boy isn’t eternally a boy. Quite the conundrum. In these stories [cut] the theme of growing up present in all the stories is made literal; Peter becomes a man (whether he started out as assigned female at birth or male, doesn't really matter, though maybe we could tell that story too one day). The man that Peter becomes [cut] is a loving parent but also a difficult one. In growing up, he has made many difficult choices; but in one story his children are taken by Captain Hook, and in his quest to save them he finds joy in the life he created and regains that youthful enthusiasm in his adult life.

In childhood, you believe so heartily in the amazement of the world; however, as an adult, you gain understanding. It becomes hard to have that happy thought needed to fly that isn’t tainted by the understanding of the world. As an adult, Peter is still that youthful and adventurous boy, but he is also a parent who deeply cares for all children. A grown-up who hasn’t forsaken that deeply held belief that fairies exist and flight is possible. A representation that you do not have to leave behind “immaturity”, to “grow up”, and that you can be a mature and responsible adult and also retain that curiosity and excitement that started in childhood. His happy thoughts are about his children and how much he loves them and how excited he is to be a father. And in that, not only does he fly, he remembers why he does the things he does.

“To live would be an awfully big adventure” and Peter is nothing if not adventurous.

(Tying in the ideas of Adulthood and Peter growing up from Hook 1991 and a few other bits, and some elements of the story. But also the "Im Youth, I'm Joy" from the 1911 book, the boy who never grows up). The story of Peter Pan is all about youth, adulthood, and growing up, but also keeping in that belief and curiosity and sense of adventure.

Personality wise takes elements of the 1911 book (actually demented and a touch evil version) and Disney 1953 (a little unhinged but not evil). Or 2003 (a sweet wittle mischievous boi) and this 2020s animated series (Big Brother Energy). I love the 2003 movie so that's gonna be the big focus, touching into big brother energy with really tiny kids, but kinda is evil with adults. Overall unhinged.

I wanted to include a line taken from the 1911 book about how “Seen a map of a persons mind… Doctors sometimes draw maps of other parts of you… catch them trying to draw a map of a child’s mind, which is not only confused… these are probably roads in the island; for Neverland is always more or less an island.” I saw a few analyses and essays about Peter Pan and on this, one points out that in the Victorian and Edwardian times that you “could map out fairyland and map out madness”. But couldn’t quite figure out how to put it in so it's more vaguely referenced. That video also said that you could read Peter Pan in that he was like “an angel of death” of taking dead babies that fell from their prams or were forgotten and saving them, taking them to Neverland. And I didn’t quite add that, but did expand the lost boys with this thought.

Another thing I couldn’t really get into, but somewhat reference is the LGBTQ history of Peter Pan. Like many plays, Peter was played by a woman for it was easier for women to portray boys. Peter’s first main actress, and the one he was mostly written for, was a lesbian woman Maude Adams, and Peter’s writer JM Barrie was bi or gay—there is a letter he wrote to the Treasure Island author Robert Louis Stevenson stating his love. From the “Maude Adams and the LGBTQ History of Peter Pan” video 38:03, we get an excerpt from a book with a way too long title that goes “In his works, Barrie constructs a new formation of the male identity… by creating male protagonists who desire other males and who display homosexual uncertainties; however, due to 19th c homophobia… unable to develop past the socially accepted homosocial stage.” And later at 41:20, same book, “it is only when Peter and Hook interact that the two partial beings combine to create one composite persona… Barrie makes it very evident that both Peter and Hook enjoy the companionship of the other… the manner in which the two ‘Captains’ conduct their communities implies their dissatisfaction. They are much more entranced with the other… display a deeper homosocial bond that is based on their mutual understanding of the other.”

And I mentioned in the personality section about “whether he started out as assigned female at birth or a boy” as there are many trans readings and a trans book I can’t remember the name of but do know exists. A trans reading can be interpreted in his fairy identity as he is referenced in the original text and many adaptations that Peter is more fairy than human child, and is a point in separating him from gender constructs in that he no longer or never truly existed in the world of man (an edwardian world with boundaries that isolated him). That earlier vid brings up the line from the play “you ust never touch me” in response to Wendy, ‘to be touched is to be reached for by a world of expectations that Peter can never face”.

This overall existence outside of the world of men and male expectations creates a resonance between Peter Pan and anyone who feels limited and outside this world of men and male expectations. “For many people, he’s cathartic in that he chose his own destiny, he’s celebrated for it, and in the end wasn’t pressured in conforming”.

Come Away Update:

Hello all! Instead of moving forward with a group plot from months ago that killed the muse in me, allow me to make a brief update on the island.

Where we left off…

Hook had been abducted by the witch and made a dark deal; when he came out from under her spell, the captain learned that the brief moments spent with the woman had actually been many months. She was pregnant with his child, and claimed that it was one of the last pieces that she needed to reset the Neverland, and to rid the island of all of the travelers that had found home on its shores.

Hook and Pan were beginning to set their feud aside to rally their forces to stop the wicked witch. They knew they’d need the help of all peoples on the land and sea to bring down the woman and stop the destruction of the home they loved.

What conspired…

From pirates to lost boys, to wandering souls, to the merfolk and pixies, and even the rare witches and natives, the inhabitants of Neverland were able to stop the witch from fulfilling her dark wishes. Instead of sacrificing the new baby, Peter’s closest companion fairy, the scales of a sweet mermaid, and the totem of the late Indian chief, the witch was convinced to bury herself into the eldest tree on the island, where all life therein is said to have begun. It was she that needed to be reset, to once again become the caretaker that the Neverland had created her to be.

What’s next…

Deep in the Neverwood, the witch of the island is rejuvenating in sleep. Time will only tell what she will become, and what will happen without her meddling.

Peter and Hook’s truce has come to an end, though each have grown a slight respect for the other. It is doubtful that it will last, but one can hope.

Tinkerbell, returned to Peter without her wings, as lost the power of Fairy magic. Her pixie dust remains, but she has been forced to live as a full sized human fairy, and is growing accustomed to being back among the lost boys.

The majority of the merfolk, though still mistrusting the pirates, seem a bit more curious with human life, having joined forces to help rescue their beloved island. Perhaps their new moon strolls will be more popular now that they’ve seen what the humans can do together.

Whatever happens next, the island seems content. Shall we have an adventure now, or would you like to have your tea first?

A general faerie verse; characterization is as above, but Tink is not attached to Peter for one reason or another at this point in her story. This can be taken as her living in the Hollow before she met Peter, or be used to put her into another place or story. This verse can bend the rules to suit, while the Neverland Verse cannot. This can include changing fae magic rules, allowing her to become “human sized” at will and so on.

21st Century human Tink, known as Tina Bell in this verse. An off-shoot of the Tink I write in @happiestplacehq​ though her background can be tweaked depending on setting, plot and who she is interacting with.

Hongjoong always found a sort of peace when writing in his journal. It was always easier for him to express his feelings on paper than to another person.

He had tucked Jiwon into bed a few hours ago but couldn’t find a way to sleep himself. So he opted for his journal. Maybe getting some of the thoughts out of his head would make it easier to sleep.

It's supposed to hurt, I know. it's a broken heart. But to move on is the hardest part. It comes in waves. But I can’t the letting go. The memory fades but what if I'm trying, and then I close my eyes and then I'm right back just lost in that last goodbye?

He sighed and tucked the photo back between the pages of the worn book. His heart was broken before but this time it felt more shattered. More time. He just needed more time.
