Cover Art | Nigeria Jones by Ibi Zoboi
From Ibi Zoboi, bestselling, award-winning author of American Street and co-author of Punching the Air, comes a bold new YA coming-of-age story, which explores race, feminism, and complicated family dynamics, about a girl whose father is the leader of a Black liberation group. The ideal next read for fans of Roxane Gay, Jacqueline Woodson, and Elizabeth Acevedo. Warrior Princess. That’s what Nigeria Jones’s father calls her. He has raised her as part of the Movement, a Black separatist group based in Philadelphia. Nigeria is homeschooled and vegan and participates in traditional rituals to connect her and other kids from the group to their ancestors. But when her mother—the perfect matriarch of their Movement—disappears, Nigeria’s world is upended. She finds herself taking care of her baby brother and stepping into a role she doesn’t want. Nigeria’s mother had secrets. She wished for a different life for her children, which includes sending her daughter to a private Quaker school outside of their strict group. Despite her father’s disapproval, Nigeria attends the school with her cousin, Kamau, and Sage, who used to be a friend. There, she begins to flourish and expand her universe. As Nigeria searches for her mother, she starts to uncover a shocking truth. One that will lead her to question everything she thought she knew about her life and her family.

Digital vs. GenAI: From Deluxe-Paint to Generative AI | by Nettrice Gaskins | Medium.com
See on Scoop.it - Education 2.0 & 3.0
Deluxe-Paint was a digital paint program aka ‘bitmap graphics editor’ created by Dan Silva for Electronic Arts and published for the Amiga 1000 in the fall of 1985. It was the first software I used to create computer-based or digital art. Deluxe-Paint would be around for ten more years, even after I had moved on to other programs (i.e., Adobe Photoshop) and computers as a college student at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
At the time (and often today) the ones who used traditional media such as graphite, paint, and clay were more accepted by the art establishment, while those of us drawing with pixels were pushed into graphic design. Nothing I was doing in the early 1990s would have been considered except for maybe 2D and 3D animation and I didn’t want to be boxed in. So I bided my time until vector graphics took over and images could be made at higher resolutions. Then, the World Wide Web proliferated and everything became DATA. Today I argue that what I created using computers (back then) was more Dadaist than digital. It was a digital form of photomontage.

"Repetition in African Diasporean creative expression is most prevalent in performance such as rhythm in music, dance and language.[7] The organizing force that produces this aesthetic is rhythm or the ongoing recurrence of a beat. Repetitive words and multiple, conflicting rhythms are important elements of African performance and its American descendants – gospel/spirituals, blues and jazz. Although most often discussed in music, the polyrhythm aesthetic can also be found in cornrowing and technology. Music theorist Adam Rudolph notes the weaving of threads or “thematic fibers” in repeated patterns of rhythmic regularity and irregularity as polyrhythm.[8]" Nettrice Gaskins
