She-ra D&D Update !

been a while! i've been busy, but i'll be back with this AU soon ; in the meantime, i figured i'd throw it to y'all.

I'm thinking i might meet this design somewhere in the middle; i love the armour & net as a weapon, but abjuration is the school of protection, so magical nets seem fitting. I also figured Drow, mostly as a connection to Lolth & cobwebs as another homage to the net theme. Honestly might take the abjuration drow route for a character some day.

My only concern with that is the idea of drow as ""dark elves"" and the racist history behind that, regardless of how WotC have tried to update and fix that.

do you think the creators of spop managed to make each character look like their assigned ethnicity/race? because when i first heard that glimmer was supposed to be asian, i was quite surprised. apart from her VA being asian, i don't see anything in her character design or culture, and i'm asian myself.

same goes for the other characters. i guess netossa and bow being black is a bit more obvious because of their complexion and hair texture, but the other characters all had pretty similar features, save for one or two small differences. characters like mermista and entrapta especially seemed to fall into the classic "ambiguous brown character" trope. maybe that's just me though.

i think glimmer being asian is more "obvious" when you see micah and castaspella, but glimmer ended up having her mother's eye and hair colors, so i also had the same impression as yours when they confirmed glimmer to be asian-coded. i heard sea hawk and scorpia were also meant to be half-asian according to the character designer of the show - which i ALSO didn't see coming. and you have to dig these up online to find out.

i had no idea mermista was supposed to be indian-coded until the fandom pointed it out, i think they hint at it with her clothing in the princess prom iirc? and entrapta then is VERY ambiguous.

i've criticized this before, but i just think the characters' facial features - ESPECIALLY their noses - and i guess their body shapes are not that diverse. to me none of the characters rlly seem to be from different ethnicities save maybe for the black characters (and even then, there's a lot more to black ppl than just african-american).

the spop cast may have diverse skin colors, but in the end they don't look THAT diverse, especially if you count the body diversity. which is a shame, i'm sure a lot of fans must look up to this show and see themselves represented in it, but sadly i only see the characters being drawn with more appropriate features in fan art.

while i do not want to sound like an angry dudebro that hates spop for adding diversity, the diversity itself isn't even that developed. especially considering most of the characters' ethnicities were "confirmed" by the character designer OUTSIDE of the show, and canon doesn't rlly support the statements.

Flutterina ( Abby ) - Small One, The Beautiful Butterfly, Chrysalis, Friend of Peekablue. 19 yrs old, 4'7, previously a slave for the Horde, but was freed by Adora and Peekablue and brought to refuge. after taking time to heal from her injuries, she joined the Rebellion and pursuing revenge.

though she's very timid and anxious, Flutterina is very determined and passionate about her interests and objective to take down those who harmed her, never having a moment of doubt.

as a result of the abuse she suffered, she has chronic pain in her back and often relies on her butterfly friends to assist in her spying and scouting. when she visits, Peekablue often helps by massaging.

otherwise, Flutterina commonly found reading, writing, singing, or listening to radio. most of her hobbies are partially due to the fact she developed agnosiophobia ( phobia of the unknown ) in her time of healing from the Horde.

design would be inspired by Sploot by unknownspy, Doodles and Emojitober by elentori, Hanasaki Miyabi Art by gigili_jiggly, and Aurora by looz__y. having a lot of cottagecore fairy thoughts, and i love imagining her with her butterfly friends. lots of pink and purple.

Peekablue ( Penelope // Quill ) - Watchful Feathered Friend, Guardian of Peace ( former ), All-Seer, Friend of Flutterina. 21, 5'9, a shut-in afraid of their own abilities, finding them a curse and presumed to be dead. that is, until they're found saving Flutterina.

riddled with migraines, distorted vision, anger, and guilt, Peekablue is someone who's dispirited, depressed, and distrustful of everyone but their dear friend. because of their mental and physical struggles, they're almost always in bed or taking medication ( healing spells or plants ).

only feeling like themselves around Flutterina, peaceful and loving, they may have developed a codependency on her, as they don't have energy to do much of anything when she's not visiting.

design would be inspired by King Timeline and Green Doodles by sleeepybacon, Zenith by mekaiime, and Lapis Lazuli Illustration by elentori. in contrast to Flutterina, their colors would be a lot of greens and blues. i like to imagine them flying with her. oh, and i used they // them pronouns cuz i made them genderqueer, but used singular for easier reading.

Spinerella ( Cynthia ) - Lady Whirlwind, Dizzying Defender, Wife of Netossa. 33, 5'9, a dancer who resided in a faraway, closed off village that was ignorant to the Horde's existence, thanks to the leader. living peacefully together, Spinerella and Netossa only discovered the war when they visited Thaymor.

aside from dancing, Spinerella takes a particular interest in subjects relating to the dead and dark arts, finding them intriguing and not as black and white as people believe them to be. people wouldn't know this, though, as she usually only shares this hobby of hers with those she's close with, partially due to past prejudice.

she finds her whirlwinds fun, so she likes to mess with her enemies, putting them in multiple spins in a row until she eventually gets bored or asked to stop. usually by her wife.

honest, bold, and finding humor in most situations, Spinerella's main goal in life is to live it to the fullest and be unapologetically herself. she's getting pretty close!

design would be inspired by Mulan Illustration and Lily by cronchy_baguette, VII by puglianoregion, Raven Redesign and Starfire Redesign by polluxery, and Pink Adopt Batch by sleeepybacon. i imagine her hair always moving, wearing flowy fabrics, and having lots of wind // cloud markings or tattoos. she kinda also gives me Meg from Hercules vibes.

Netossa ( Vivian ) - Lady Snare, Captivating Beauty, Wife of Spinerella. 33, 6'0, a marksman who resided in a faraway, closed off village that was ignorant to the Horde's existence, thanks to the leader. living peacefully together, Netossa and Spinerella only discovered the war when they visited Thaymor.

she's always loved luxury and fashion, having a tailoring business on the side within her hometown, and is keen on making sure everything's in brimming order. she loves practicality with flair.

with her trickery and agility, Netossa is able to capture even the most bothersome of foes in a relatively short time, not wanting to waste any more if she doesn't have to. she's mildly annoyed that this makes her come off as impatient to some people.

sweet, efficient, and levelheaded, Netossa strives for excellence and success in her life and everything she does.

Castaspella ( Emi // Esmerelda ) - Queen of Mystacor, Enchantress Who Hypnotizes, Older Sister of Micah, Sister-In-Law of Angella, Aunt of Glimmer, Mother of Double Trouble. 50, 5'10, a sorceress who was a prodigy of her time before her reign as Queen. after the disappearance of Light Spinner, however, Mystacor took a hit and became a target in the line of fire, resulting in it being forced into hiding within the clouds.

after isolation and the death of her brother, Castaspella became strict and cautious out of paranoia for the worst to come, resulting her being perceived as less than forgiving. however, her people remain grateful for her guidance and protection. which is more than she can say than for her child, Double Trouble, and her niece, Glimmer.

design would be inspired by Persona Doodle and Drishy by ollyc_herb, Spectrum and Noir by kennnajean, and Yuhua by velinxi. i don't think she'd be a natural ginger, so her hair may be dyed. maybe that's where DT got it from. anyway, she kinda gives Odalia vibes, but if Odalia was a "wrong things for the right reasons" kinda person. devastated woman.

Rogelio - Horde Soldier, Scaled Marksman, The Caged, Best Friend of Kyle, Friend of Lohni and Adora. 19, 6'3, a previously caged boy until he was deemed 'safe' by the Horde, resulting in claustrophobia, nyctophobia, trypanophobia, and anxiety inaccurately perceived as anger or standoffish behavior by most. due to his traumas, including prejudice, he struggles with speech and socialization.

he's fiercely loyal, kind, and protective of his friends, cherishing them after everything he's gone through and them showing they would never hurt him. but after Lohni's disappearance, he becomes on edge with the Horde's intentions.

Kyle - Horde Solider, Peacekeeper, Best Friend of Rogelio, Friend of Lohni and Adora. 18, 5'4, seen as expendable for his lack of physical prowess or 'useful' skills, Kyle is invisible to most of the Horde and, when he's not with his friends, is often left alone to his own devices. due to this, he becomes a very knowledgeable person and manages to find supplies to defend himself and others with.

with his emotional intelligence, something that is incredibly stunted in the Horde, he is able to soothe others if they're in moments of anger, panic, or some other form of emotional compromise better than most would say, and puts empathy at the forefront of his mind when it comes to de-escalation.

like Rogelio, he's been concerned on where Lohni is and why she disappeared. maybe they have to work together to find her.

See, when most people watch She-Ra, they get the hots for one of the normal characters, like Catra, or Netossa, or Sea Hawk, or Double Trouble.

However, my Mommy Issues ass watched She-Ra, saw the 6+ foot tall evil masked sorceress, and I was like, OMG- I want that one. That one. Like I said, I'm pretty sure it's the Mommy Issues, but DAMN!

Most people pick normal characters to have crushes on, but me? I got fucking Shadow Weaver.

100% The OG She-Ra is worth it. I’ll admit, it’s kinda corny, and some of the episodes do drag on a bit. But that’s not a bad thing. The corny bits make it fun, and the pacing gives you time to breathe a bit. That being said, this show has a lot of good stuff. The women are powerful af. Not EVERY girl is a tomboy (I noticed there seemed to be a lot of negativity with the feminine characters in the reboot). The men are respectful af. The idea of forgiveness and growth is MUCH better written. The war feels like a war in a very realistic way (not always over the top destruction, but there are legit slaves, book burnings, and tax increases. Realistic.) There we’re even plans to have EVEN MORE diversity in the show. Huntara was going to be black and based off of Grace Jones! And a lot of production art gave Bow, Frosta, and Hordak prosthetic arms. I’ll give them a pass though on not going through with them since animation was rather limited at the time, so I could definitely see that as an issue. But Hordak DOES sport a mechanical arm in the pilot/movie, so you could easily just imagine he got a more realistic looking one later on. And Glimmer is said to have a gem imbedded in her palm. Sure, it could be in her actual hand, but I like to think it’s just a realistic looking prosthetic hand with the gem in it. And I’ll give them a pass on Huntara too, since having her be dark skinned risked them getting sued for her ‘looking too much like Storm from the X-men’. So I get why they changed it, but on the plus side her features are still very much based in a black woman. Also, Netossa isn’t an aggressive, paranoid, borderline stereotype which gets ignored in every scene she’s in. Yes, she was only in one or two episodes, but at least she had a part to play when she was there. Bonus points, it’s heavily implied Spinnerella and Netossa were gay back then too. Netossa was going to sing a song called ‘Spin Into My Heart’ but it was cut for time. Entrapta isn’t there that much, but she’s treated much better when she is. She’s obviously not autistic in this version, but I’m pretty sure Perfuma could easily be seen that way instead. Anywho, that’s just some of the reasons I really like the old show. Sorry it’s so long. 😅

So this is why, last episode, I had trouble recognizing this as the spot where Glimmer and Catra had fought ages ago. The way Netossa was standing in front of it made it look TINY. With Sea Hawk and Swift Wind standing there right in front of the entrance it's clearer to me.

Netossa is explaining everyone's weakness, and I'm lol'ing because the illustrations in the notebook are so obviously Nate's art style

How smart is Melog? Is it like having a cat that can talk? Or is it like, A Person. Because Melog is clearly fine playing the role of Therapy Cat Who Can Also Make Things Invisible. But Catra and Melog are clearly having a conversation where Melog has some things to say!

Catra and Mermista get in a fight, and Catra realizes she can't just slash the chip out of Mermista because it's clearly like, putting tendrils/connections into the rest of her body. The moment of hesitation means Mermista gets the upper hand, and Catra barely escapes (riding on Melog!)

She-Ra and Perfuma are still trying to deal with Scorpia, and She-Ra gets banged into a wall and is just Adora again. She looks confused and unhappy about it.

Perfuma: "What happened to She-Ra?"

they end up running into Hordak's little throne room and OH SHIT FUCK

Been a while since I posted a customs update since it's been a lot of me getting various projects started and very little completion, so let's do a lighting round!

I've sanded the entire princess alliance in prep for body repainting (minus Spinerella and Netossa, since the dolls I've going to use for them haven't come out yet). Left leg shows a raw grinding pass to remove vines and right shows after it's buffed out and softened. Using a little Acetone and washing it off also helps. Since this photo I also removed the molded on underwear and sprayed her with three coats of plastic adhesion improver to get her ready for repainting. There's some "ghosts" of the vines left on her legs still but I'm kind of headcanoning them as scars? I think Entrapta would have some of them from her machining work and errant experiments. I probably should have rounded the tips of her ears more but ears are kind of my enemy so this is what I'm working with. Still trying to figure out her hair...

I'm using Frankie for Perfuma and Lagoona for Adora. I cut and sanded down the mechanical details on Frankie's leg and filled the gaps in, as well as Lagoona's fin gaps, with some La Doll clay. I've heard people's woes trying to repaint Lagoona's leg and considering I was starting with Fearidescant Frankie with a similar translucent material leg, I thought it was best to treat them both the same way. I sanded them and then painted them with white gesso with a drop of blue and pink added respectively to make it a little closer to the rest of the skintone. I did two coats for both. I'm nervous how it will work on Lagoona, but for Frankie/Perfuma...

It worked out great! Yes, one leg isn't as smooth because of the layering and the clay, but you would never know it used to be a robot leg. After I'm 100% done with Perfuma, my goal is to repaint Venus, and then Lagoona. I'm waiting because I'm planning to use the same paint mix for all of them and just add a bit to lighten/darken it for each, and I'll definitely need a little more of the exact right shade to do some touchups as I work on Perfuma first. Repainting bodies still isn't my favorite thing and I'm not going to be doing it again after this series is done, but it went way smoother after everything I learned on the last one. The color is a little darker than it needs to be I think, but I was trying to put enough red in to counteract Frankie's blue undertone and it came out a way better color from the jump than Glimmer's did. I did one or two layers with the makeup sponge and then touched up any uneven areas with a nail art brush after that and it worked really well.

I'm also doing my first ever rerooting! And as you can see a little paint has rubbed off her nose as well as her ear tips while doing so, hence the need to save the paint until I'm done. I haven't done any of the hairline because I was waiting for smaller needles to arrive, so I've just been doing the bulk of the plugs and trying to figure out where to add new parts (I think a main one on the left side for her Princess Prom look), and this is how far I gotten because all four of the needles I bought broke (my fault, I was way overfilling then at first and went through them really fast before I figured that out, but I'm glad I bought a starter set while I was figuring it out instead of making my own from the start).

I never thought rerooting would be an option for me because of how exhausting I've heard able-bodied people call it, but I didn't think I could do Adora's hair well without it, and I thought I might need it for Entrapta's pigtails as well, so I decided to make Perfuma my guinea pig and I'll be honest: like sanding, it's exhausting but I actually really love it. My back hates it, but it's methodical and great to do while watching a show. The hair I used here is the chiffon nylon from Shimmerlocks and massive shoutout to them because customer service was super fast and helpful when I needed them. The nylon feels great so, barring Adora who I bought Saran for for color-matching reasons, I'm definitely sticking with nylon from now on unless a yarn wig makes more sense (like for Catra who I want to be able to go between long and short hair, or Scorpia who has such short hair I think acrylic will be easiest).

I think I'll be able to finish Perfuma as a doll this week, then move over to Entrapta, and then Adora, and then... I have to make clothes for all of them, oh no 😬

'Everything Changes' ( name is being workshopped ) is the most school-centered ( i think i'll write them in a college setting instead of a high school one ) out of all of the other modern AUs i have. not that i would write a whole lot about the subjects, cuz i'm not going to college-

keep these in mind:

everyone will have modern names ( the original ones can be nicknames instead, though not for all ), with a few exceptions.

i'll be giving everyone degrees if they're in the college and if i know what degree they'd go for.

most of the ships will either be not canon or given more spice to be acceptable fanon ( seamista is not included, we hate seamista in this house ).

that's not everything, obviously, but i might actually draw for this AU soon-ish? hopefully? i dunno, i like this universe and the progressing storylines a lot.

i wanna make more posts like this, just talking about AUs at length, despite still keeping it sorta vague. i'm really wanting to talk about my 'Until It Ends' AU esp, since it's very high-fantasy and just gives me magical thoughts.
