TV SERIES #1 Sweet Home (2020) Season 1, Netflix, Korea - Review, Thoughts, Theories for Season 2

I remember seeing Sweet Home on some webtoon platform, but I regretted not clicking on it and reading it while it was still available for the public. After it was made the tv series version, the webtoon version is restricted for subscription only, and my broke-student-wallet just can’t afford it for every episode. 

This Korean apocalyptic tv series tells us about monsters, basically, and how they are compared to humanity. It circles around the main character, Hyeon Su (Song Kang), a troubled teenager and other tenants in an apartment building. The characters vary from a greedy and selfish supermarket owner, a disabled ex-military commander, kid siblings who just lost their father, and many more. This variation of characters leads to different opinions about how they should do things to stay alive and survive. Their humanity is at stake, they have to control themselves, or they will turn into monsters.

Sweet Home is kinda bloody and gory, a warning for those who don't like it or can’t watch stuff like these. The human-to-monster transformations, though, are very cool, I think. Especially when Hyeon Su turned into a majestic winged angel monster (spoiler alert). 

There are 10 episodes of Sweet Home, and you can binge-watch it on Netflix. I, myself binge-watched all the episodes for 2 days and 1 night, even brought my phone to the dinner table. 

For you who have watched it, let’s share some thoughts on it. For those of you who haven’t watched it, I think it’s time to part ways for a while, please watch it, and come back to read my post below this. 

Spoiler alert, darling. 

This series left a great impression—also questions—for me. The ending consists of loose threads with tons of probabilities. When I finished binge-watched it, I browsed on the internet about peoples’ thoughts on it. I asked my sister—she already read some episodes of the webtoon—about the ending and she said that some of the storyline are different between the series and webtoon version. This makes even those who already read the webtoon curious about what will happen next after the ending of Season 1. These are some of the question left hanging in the Season 1 of Sweet Home and my thoughts about them:

What happened to the fetus inside Mr. Han Du Sik’s bathroom?

As we all already watched, the mother who had lost a baby, went to the bathroom after she felt she was going to turn into a monster. The next day, Mr. Han found a monster-sized-heart-beating-fetus inside his bathroom. What will happen to that thing? I think it is somehow related to Seo Yi Kyung’s pregnancy. Her husband was gone, and she was desperate to find him, despite keeping the baby alive through the monster-apocalypse. The fetus inside the bathroom could also be the heart of the monsters too, a symbol that the monsters were not all gone, a new start for the monster era. 

Why or how is Mr. Gangster still alive?

This left me speechless when I saw Mr. Gangster drove Hyeon Su inside a car, with blaring sirens as the backsound. I had to pause and replay the scene to observe the man, and it looks like the burn scars on his cheek were gone. Some theories I read say that the fluid-monster-essence used Mr. Gangster’s body as its new host, thus he came back to life. We figure out that the monsters are able to self-heal, but only for the scars that are made after the monster-transformation, right? Remember Hyeon Su’s scars on his arm? He couldn’t heal that because it was made before the transformations. While Mr. Gangster, if he really turned into a monster, why do his burn scars from his childhood are gone? Is he the same Mr. Gangster, or is he someone else?

Where and who is Seo Yi Kyung’s husband?

We don’t have a lot of clues for this one. His husband was said to be experimenting on the monster-transforming chemicals and gone missing. Seo Yi Kyung then joined the military to search for him and find the cure for the monster-outbreaks. 

I think these questions are purposefully left hanging as I already experienced with Kingdom, a Korean zombie historical series on Netflix too (I will write about them too when the Third Season is out, hopefully). They seem to like to make use of the audience's curiosity to keep the series famous. I personally didn’t really mind about it, as long as they have the next seasons prepared. But if the bad thing happened and they wouldn’t or couldn’t release the next seasons, I bet many audiences would be very disappointed. Let’s just hope they already have the next season and will release it soon! 

Overall, I think this series is great and very worth-watching, the fighting scenes between human and monsters (also human and human, because some of them are worst than monsters) are thrilling, but beware of the bloody stuff, though.

[DRAMA SERIES RESPONSE] It's been a few months i didn't watch korean dramas. I need a mood for watching a long episodes of dramas/series. Here, finally my mood was lifted up after seeing one of my favourite korean actors Ju Ji Hoon's first ever korean series on netflix poster, Kingdom. This series is quite hype on social media. It was released on 25 January 2019 and many people recommended to watch it. So many response saying it was sooooo gooodd, you must watch! A lot of people who are non-korean-drama-lovers watched it too. So, i gave it a try! I binge-watched it. Six episodes in a a few hours. It's been a long time i didn't do this. Maybe because the duration is not as long as korean dramas in general. It just takes around 44-57 minutes per episode.

When i watched episode 1, i felt it's quite boring. On episode 2, i started getting interested. The next episodes are getting better and interesting. Then, on the last episode, AS USUAL they cut it when the scene is so tensed. Errrrrrr. Okay thats the thing the production team must do so that the viewers will wait curiously for the next season. Hull.

There have been several korean movies that took the same background as kingdom series which is a saeguk period with monster and zombie as their main story (monstrum and rampant). I havent watched those movies so that i can't compare.

Yet following the huge hype on social media, i think it's kind of exaggerated. Most saeguk dramas were good since the genre is loved a lot by korean themselves and it was usually produced seriously. Maybe because it's aired specially on netflix which kinda having a higher level than any other tv channel which have different format so that it gets a lot of attention by the hipster viewers. lol. Eh btw, some people compared it to train to busan and said kingdom was more thrilling than train to busan. But as for me, train to busan was way more thrilling since they had to fight with the zombies in a small place which was in a train.

Overall, i like it and have the same feelings like when i watched any other good saeguk drama. I was captivated by Ju Ji Hoon's act. His last character in the movie Along with The Gods 2 which was a witty guy is so different compare to this. His charisma is so errrmmm. It's said Song Joongki was the first one who was offered the role but he declined. Good that Ju Ji Hoon took this offer as it now can be counted as a success korean series. A lot of people who involved in this production must be happy as it gets a good reaction. Another information, it is said one of the production team was dead on 16 January 2019 due to overwork while working on this series. Huhu, rip, you have worked so hard T.T Later on i wish they'll manage the staffs to work hard but still in a healthy proportion. No one getting injured, sick, or  dead anymore. See you in Kingdom Season 2!

Historical Horror Series, 'Kingdom' Goes Multiplayer, Drops New Trailer

Netflix’s South Korean horror-thriller Kingdom is set to get its own video game adaptation, entitled Kingdom: The Blood. The game will be an online action RPG and is expected to release for both PC and mobile platforms, with cross-play options. Though we still don’t have a concrete release date set, Netflix has released a teaser trailer for the upcoming title.

Not a whole lot of information has been shared about Netflix’s upcoming licensed title, including exactly how big the game’s online component will be. It’s unknown whether the game will feature some cooperative zombie-killing gameplay-- e.g. Killing Floor and Dying Light-- or if the game will allow for a much larger number of players to fight alongside one another in a massive world MMO-style. Either way, Kingdom: The Blood is looking to be a great idea for a game on paper.

Set during Korea’s Joseon period and just three years after the famous “Battle of the Unpo Wetland,” Netflix’s ‘Kingdom focuses on a prince who is tasked with investigating a deadly outbreak within his kingdom. The major draw of Kingdom is that the series combines two incredibly different genres. Part-historical drama, part-zombie thriller, the TV show offers an interesting “what if” scenario that appeals to both history buffs and horror fans.

Out of Netflix’s vast catalog of original films and TV shows, Kingdom stands out as an excellent candidate for a video game adaption. The series offers an exciting and original world that feels ripe for player exploration and plenty of spooky thrills. Zombies have always been popular within the gaming industry, with massive franchises like Resident Evil, Telltale’s The Walking Dead, and Left 4 Dead all leaving huge impacts on the ever-going gaming landscape. And while there still isn’t a whole lot known about the upcoming licensed game, it seems like a perfect recipe for success. Kingdom certainly does a great job of bringing the horror, and we’re excited to see how it performs as a video game.

Earlier this year, Netflix expressed its interest in entering the video game medium, with the company dipping their toes into the industry with big IPs Stranger Things and Narcos already receiving game adaptations. While neither of those titles performed all that well (the former has a score 62 on Metacritic, while the latter holds an abysmal 45), we’re holding out hope that Netflix will be able to improve their gaming efforts with Kingdom: The Blood, as they seem to be taking their gaming efforts more seriously. We’re interested to see what other Netflix shows are next to get game adaptations and how far Netflix is looking to go with its video game endeavors.

Kingdom has two seasons and one special on Netflix, with a third season not yet renewed officially. But given the fact that the series is getting a video game adaptation, it seems all too likely that a third season is coming to the streaming service. 10 Hwarang: The Poet Warrior Youth (2016): 8.0

The 2016 K-drama is a coming-of-age romance centered around a group of elite young men. The drama takes place during the Silla Kingdom era between 57 BC and AD 935. The queen of the Kingdom of Silla sent her son away from the palace walls to stay safe from their enemies.

But he's coming of age and waits along with other citizens for her to step down. But there's trouble amidst. The queen worries about powerful nobles who once tried to take over the throne. She has a plan to form an elite group of warriors called, the Hwarang. They will surpass existing power factions and protect the throne. The young men are unaware that their future king is among them.

9 Rebel: Thief Who Stole The People (2017): 8.2

The K-drama is set during the ruling of the 10th king during the Joseon Dynasty. Many who watch the drama will find it closely related to another famous tale, Robin Hood. The son of a servant has no noble standing in society and little room to make something of himself.

Hong Gil-dong (Yoon Kyun-sang) decides to become the leader of a group of thieves. They steal and give back to the poor as the tyrannical King Yeonsangun (Kim Ji-seok) oppresses his people. This drama also has a love story as the King's consort can't seem to forget her first love who happens to be Gil-dong. It leads to a palpable romance.

8 Rookie Historian Goo Hae-ryung (2019): 8.2

Rookie Historian Goo Hae-ryung premiered on Netflix in 2019 and stars K-Pop Idol, Cha Eun-woo as Prince Dowon Yi-rim. While the drama may be tagged as a romance and comedy, there's a lot of historical facts to unpack. Two storylines take place in the show.

One is set in "nowadays"  in the early 19th century of Joseon. The other twenty years beforehand. One is more lighthearted with caricatures and jokes. The other is a series of flashbacks detailing the unjust rank of citizens and suppression. Interweaved is also a story of love between a free-spirited woman hoping to become a female historian and a prince working in secret as a romance writer.

7 Deep Rooted Tree (2011): 8.3

Deep Rooted Tree was first known as a historical novel by the same name written by Lee Jung-myung. For fans wanting a bit more thrill in their drama, this is a good choice. The story revolves around a royal guard who is investigating the serial murders of  Jiphyeonjeon scholars. The drama does have inclinations of romance but it's not the main star.

Ddol-bok (Jang Hyuk) was once a young slave to the King. The King causes the death of his in-laws and his slaves to save them from his father. But the young slaves survive. Years later, now a royal guard, Ddol-bak wants revenge but gets tangled in the mysterious murders. As secrets get uncovered, the creation of the Korean alphabet can either give or take power.

6 Empress Ki (2013): 8.5

Empress Ki was a domestic and overseas hit for its impressive performances and riveting story. The historical drama details the journey of a woman born in Korea as she becomes a powerful empress of China amidst love, war, and politics. Gi Seungnyang (or Ki Seung Nyang) rises to power despite the restrictions of the era's class system.

Mr. Queen is a historical comedy that will have anyone on the floor laughing at its comical displays and dialogue. The 2020 drama ties the present and the past all in one. An up-and-coming chef suffers an accident and wakes up in a different era. Not only does he wakes up in the Joseon era but also as a woman.

Not just any woman, but the queen. The current King is a gentle and easy-going person but in reality, has a dark and secret side the Queen is starting to uncover. While there's corruption in the kingdom, the Queen's modern life and that of the Joseon era are melding. It makes for comical and awkward encounters.

4 Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo (2016): 8.6

This drama is for fans who want a bit of fantasy and time travel tied in with their historical romance. The show did averagely well but gained mass success overseas. This is another body swap story through time. A young 25-year-old woman gets transported to the year 941. During the Goryeo Dynasty and amongst the prince of the Wang family.

The drama wouldn't be without its love triangle, a good guy and bad boy. The woman falls for one of the kindhearted princes but is also allured by another who hides his face with a mask. In between love, she finds herself amongst dangerous palace politics and a rivalry for the throne.

3 Mr.Sunshine (2018): 8.8

Mr.Sunshine is a favorite amongst K-drama fans for its melodrama, swoon-worthy love triangle, and its riveting use of historical facts. Fans applauded the show's accurate portrayal of historical events as well as its time period setting. Unlike other dramas, this takes place before the Japanese Annexation of Korean in the late 1800s.

With the highest rating is the 2015 K-drama, Six Flying Dragons. It's seen as a loose prequel to the 2011 drama, Deep Rooted Tree. This is due to the storyline focused on real fictional characters and their foundations in the rise of the Joseon Dynasty.

The drama focuses a bit more on the character Yi Bang-won (Yoo Ah-in), a prince and future king who helped his father establish the dynasty. The drama has everything from the rise and fall of characters, action sequences, drama, and compelling political conflicts.

Netflix has announced a new original series. Kingdom is a historical period drama and zombie action-thriller from director Kim Seong-hun and writer Kim Eun-hee.

Director Kim Seong-hun said of the project:

“I am thrilled about partnering with an eminent writer like Kim Eun-hee. Kingdom presents the opportunity to work on long-form television at its most ambitious and on a truly cinematic scale because of the unparalleled creative freedom that Netflix as a global internet television network provides.”

Writer Kim Eun-Hee. said:

“I have been working on Kingdom since 2011. I wanted to write a story that reflects the fears and anxiety of modern times but explored through the lens of a romantic fascination of the historical Joseon period. Working with Netflix helps us to unlock this creative vision for Kingdom and I am excited to further build this unique story with the director for whom I have tremendous respect.”

The eight-episode series is being produced by Korean Drama production company, Astory. The series is set in Korea’s medieval Joseon period where a crown prince is sent on a suicide mission to investigate a mysterious outbreak that leads him to a brutal truth that threatens the kingdom.

Erik Barmack, VP of international originals, said of the series:

 “Kingdom captured our imaginations from the moment we read the script with its visual feast of historical drama blended with supernatural fantasy. We are incredibly honored by this rare opportunity of pairing two premier creative minds in Korea – film director Kim Seong-hun and television writer Kim Eun-hee.”

Kingdom will premiere exclusively on Netflix in 2018 in over 190 countries.
