"Fake" e "You Must Go Now" de 'Is That Real?'

Edith Piaf - “The Sparrow” flies into San Francisco for a “one night only” performance
Even after 60 years since her passing in October of 1963, singer Edith Piaf continues to inspire and embody like few others. When people think of Paris, they usually imagine it with Piaf’s romantic “le vien rose,” lilting somewhere in the background.
Yet, it’s Piaf’s “Non, je ne regrette rien - No Regrets” that is her signature song, and fortunately San Francisco gets to see the spirit of this one-of-kind “sparrow” fly to resurgence once again with the talented Nathalie Lermitte on Nov. 6 at the Herbst Theater.
Hailed as “the most beautiful tribute to Edith Piaf’s career that has ever been produced,” as reported by Nite-Life Exchange. Lermitte has performed, “Piaf! The Show” more than 400 times in over 50 countries. Lermitte returns with this show to San Francisco - ‘the Paris of the Wild West’ for one night only.
While variations of Piaf’s life story has been featured before, “Piaf! The Show” was conceived and directed by Gil Marsalla.
Founding Directo Productions in 2001, Marsalla has been successfully producing musical and theatrical shows as well as large-scale events for the past 20 years. With touring his productions worldwide, his aim has been to feature emerging French artists and talents, such as Lermitte.
Although perhaps unknown to American audiences, Lermitte has been in the spotlight since she was 6 years old. At the age of 17 in 1983, she released her first album of songs. Marsalla’s production is not the first time Lermitte has embodied the role of Edith Piaf. In 1997 she was in the musical 'Piaf je t'aime.’
Lermitte is perhaps the only actress/singer to perform as Piaf in not one but in three separate productions. in 2004 she took the lead in the show 'Piaf, une vie en rose et noir.’
With Marsalla’s vision and dedication, Directo Productions has successfully presented shows to sold-out venues in North & South America, Europe, Japan, China, and many other locations on five continents.
No doubt this celebration of the life and talent of Edith Piaf, is a one-of-a-kind live-theatre experience, “Piaf! The Show,” is a triumph! “Par excellence!”
PIAF! The Show Starring French Sensation Nathalie Lermitte
Conceived and Directed by Gil Marsalla will be on Monday, Nov. 6, 2023 - 7:30 pm - One Night Only!
Herbst Theater - 401 Van Ness Avenue San Francisco, CA 94102

Zappa’s first album after the dissolution of the third Mothers is his closest yet to a true solo album: most of the tracks feature only Terry Bozzio on drums and various background vocalists, with all guitars, bass, synths and keyboards overdubbed by FZ himself. On the back cover you’ll see his next core group, but two of the four didn’t play on the album. And the solo-ness of the effort is central to this album: it’s only Frank’s lead vocal and mostly Frank’s instrumental contributions. There’s none of the synergy and interplay vital to the sound of the records in the first half of the decade, just Zappa’s unadulterated vision. It’s good, but it’s lacking something. The most timeless track, Black Napkins, is a great example: it’s a wonderful melody, and an all-time great Zappa performance, but that’s ALL it is, just a Zappa guitar showcase. It’s the only song on the album where he’s backed by a full band instead of just himself overdubbed, and yet it’s still just him really. So this will never be in my pantheon of favorite Zappa records—I love the bands too much!
Of the other songs, we’ve got some really good ones with great melodies and good lyrics. Disco Boy is fun, his ‘60s hippie critiques updated for ‘70s culture, and Wonderful Wino is a good rendition of a song that had been around since at least 1970–it’s in lots of Flo & Eddie sets, appears on the debut album of Jeff Simmons, and was recorded around the time of Over-Nite Sensation with Ricky Lancelotti on vocals (later released on The Lost Episodes). And then there’s The Torture Never Stops, which is a pretty good song that I usually put on my Halloween mixes. It’s got two things going against it. 1, the fake orgasming is only not annoying the first time you hear it. 2, he played it in his live set for, like, every show he ever played after this point, with not a lot of changes between bands and years—and it’s always 10-15 minutes long. So every time they release a new complete Zappa show, you’ve gotta sit through this song again… so yeah, I don’t hate the song, but I am sick of it.
This album came out on Warner Brothers, the major label who had been distributing Frank’s Discreet Records. Frank got into a protracted legal battle with his (now former) manager Herb Cohen, so this wound up Frank’s first album since the early Verve days to come out directly on a major label instead of something he operated. The legal battle stretches on and complicates Zappa’s ability to release music. After a decade of releasing multiple albums per year, FZ releases only this in 1976, nothing in 1977, and two albums released by Cohen against Zappa’s wishes in 1978. In 1979 he will strike back with a vengeance, because his music was sure not standing still in all that time…
Possibly in part due to it being released by Warner Bros, this is one of the easiest to find original Zappa records—if your local record store has two Zappas in the bins, it’ll be this and Over-Nite Sensation. (If they have three, the third will be Ship Arriving Too Late…)

Caitlin Hespe in NYC - Day 19-20
DC
Was really looking forward to the process of leaving the city, arriving somewhere new again.
First bit was logistics, working out best route to the first activity, and dropping bag off at hotel etc. first activity was something I was not really looking forward to: mandalas and gratefulness. I was in a sceptical mood, was really not wanting to sit in a gratefulness circle.
Felt aware of the scavenger hunt-ness of this as I took a train for an hour to a garden.
The garden itself was beautiful. The lotus and lilys were in bloom. It was quite spectacular. Strange to arrive at these sorts of things with not much preparation.
The workshop was not as bad as I had worked it up to being. Overall did feel calm and grounding.
Back into the city, checked in to room, left soon after to wander and find some food and go to nerd nite.
Hormonal and lonely, a tad existential.
Highlight meeting Casey on Sunday. Felt relieving to chat to someone who understands what strange situation you are in.
Bus back to New York. trip felt too short, but I was also happy to be back.

And I absolutely agree! Snyder sucks and I would absolutely fight him in a parking lot any day of the week! But also this post was meant to be more about the characterization of *Krypton* in general, and I would like to expand on what I like about the whole "Hyper-technological planet that's forced itself to forget that sex exists" aspect of Krypton.
Like, for me, a major appeal of Superman's story is that, yes, it is a story about morality and the goodness humanity is capable of, but also because it's pretty much *the* superhero story as we've come to recognize superhero stories, is that when it first came into existence, it didn't really have the boundaries of genre that we recognize in most popular media today. I mean that's one of the reason why comic book universes have pretty much no problem putting science fiction and fantasy elements side by side, but for me, a major emotional column of Superman's appeal is the Superman story as a Screwball Romantic Comedy that just so happens to be taking place in a Sci-Fi universe.
Let me explain: In the 1930's, the Screwball Romantic comedy emerged as this subgenre of the romantic comedy basically in response to the social upheavals caused by the Great Depression and by expanding women's rights and suffrage. Women were becoming more and more present in the work force and men were forced to reconfigure their concepts of masculinity as these spaces were shifting! And also with modernity, you had the spreading acceptance of the idea that women are in fact complex beings with needs (sometimes, *gasp* sexual needs!), and the emergence of film as a medium really lit these ideas on fire. Like, oh shit, you're watching ~mutual sexual tension~ on screen! So the Screwball romantic comedy is known for making fun of romance as a concept, fast-paced banter, stubborn and confident female protagonists (who usually have some kind of social--usually economic-- advantage over their male leads), playing around with power dynamics, and shenanigans involving false or mistaken identities--sound familiar? It should! Because that's basically the formula that's given the Superman/Lois Lane romance its staying power. And now you're asking, "okay, Nite, but what does this have to do with *Krypton?*"
Well at the core of his concept, Superman's "The Man of Tomorrow," but the tomorrow-ness of his concept has to come from him reconciling his alien heritage with his life on earth. By setting up Krypton as a heavily communal planet that has eliminated much of its passions to the point where it has eliminated war and created dazzling technological heights never thought possible, but it's basically Bene Gesserit'd itself into a social corner, this gives it a strong contrast against Earth as warm, passionate, compassionate, adaptable, individualistic, but also chaotic, violent, selfish, and dumb. Earth's sexiness has to be reconciled with Krypton's sexlessness. Superman isn't meant to be 100% Kryptonian or Earthling, but he's meant to take the best of both to lead people into a better tomorrow. As you say, this is also why it's important to have a Superman who's aware of his own dark impulses and whose good choices have to be an active and conscious choice. Like the Screwball Romantic Comedy, the Krypton/Earth dynamic is ultimately about the growing pains of modernity.
Okay so I've been thinking about this for a while. So back in the 80's John Byrne overhauled the Superman origin story to come up with the concept of Krypton as this cold, technologically-driven planet--and this was partially so that the ship Superman arrived on earth in was an artificial womb so that he would kind of, technically, be 'born' on Earth (which honesty cuts into a lot of the pathos of Krypton and Lara and Jor as parents and also cuts into the 'Superman as immigrant' narrative which we've come to love so much). And this did end up influencing Superman lore because, hey, Krypton as a technologically-driven society that is deeply flawed but also convinced of its own perfection is still really interesting.
Cut to Snyder making 'Man of Steel' in 2013 where he asserts that Kal-El is the first "natural" birth on Krypton in centuries. So basically because Snyder wanted to work in more of his Christ metaphor for Superman ("His birth is a HUUUUGE DEEAL"), you end up back with the lore that yes, Kal-El was a (born) baby when he got put in his rocket and thus it's back to an immigrant narrative.
Anyway, ANYWAY, my point is, even though both these writers were working from a weird conservative place that fundamentally misunderstands major points of Superman's character (In Byrne's case, Superman as an immigrant, and in Snyder's case, Superman as Jewish/Space Moses) it has resulted in what may be my favorite implication of Superman Lore: That Jor-El and Lara were considered pervert freaks for having a baby the old-fashioned way. If Krypton never blew up, Kal-El would have grown up relentlessly bullied, like "That's Kal-El, his parents had him by having sex, without input from the proper committees, he came out of a vagina, what a freak."
Sidenote but I'm actually really enjoying the "House of El" YA graphic novels right now, because it's basically Lara and Jor going, "The only way to save Krypton is by inflicting ADHD on random teenagers."

@mandophobic you have triggered The Fixation™ i am not responsible for what happens next 😌 no but the thing is, they are similar in so many ways, dispossessed Mandalorians with no home and lost family who both turn to the mercenary life not because they love it but because their skill set makes them very good at it so they can make their way through the galaxy with their autonomy and dignity intact
simon kassianides talking about how axe lost everything in the purge, witnessed it himself and survived--and boba losing everything when jango was killed!! they both had (presumably, given axe's losses as implied by the show/referenced by simon) a loving family who gifted them with a rich heritage and a stable identity, until it was blown all to hell by the violence of war. now in many ways they're broken by loss and grief, but endure by becoming hardened warriors who don't need anything and can win any fight (well....... most fights.)
until their need is exposed. until boba needs to recapture what he's lost by reclaiming tatooine from all who would break it apart--learning from the sand people to be a part of a greater whole again. and until axe needs mandalore and other mandalorians again despite their differences--because the fractured, splintered factions are an outward representation of the inner brokenness of most Mandalorians, who for so long were exiles and castaways and sons without fathers.
i think they probably wouldn't get along immediately: despite now accepting the children of the watch, axe is still ultra-protective of mandalorian identity, and who can blame him?? moff gideon right in front of him appropriating mandalorian culture. and boba might (rightfully) associate axe with koska and bo-katan, with whom he had a less-than-stellar first meeting back in s2, and dismiss him offhand. they'd be combative, they'd snip about honor and mandalorian-ness, they might get into a real fight or two that ends in a draw.
but they'd also have each other's backs in the event of real danger, just like boba with koska and bo-katan. they'd prove to each other really quickly that despite their different backgrounds they're extremely similar people, and they might find solace in not being alone. they're both a little cocky and have gotten used to being leaders among others, but i think they'd end up working together well as partners because their values and goals are remarkably in line.
if we're going the romance route (and i sure am), after they get over the initial bickering/fighting/dick-measuring contest, axe would be really proud of the fact that THEE sick-ass mercenary boba fett is his buddy now and tells him war stories and shows him his scars and lends him weapons (!!!) and they're always in sync when they fight and even though they both have strong opinions, they defer to each other's expertise: boba as a lone bounty hunter, axe as part of a well-tuned fighting group. (they'd learn from each other!! techniques and tricks and strategies!! koska and bo-katan might even grudgingly accept that boba's One Of The Guys Now because axe keeps bringing him around.) (koska teases axe about his crush. he turns bright red beneath his helmet.) (axe and boba speak mando'a together and axe thinks boba has a hick/redneck accent whereas boba thinks axe's accent is RIDICULOUSLY posh.)
they don't really have much of an Obvious Courting Period because one day they're fighting some imps together and they're just buddies, they're just pals, no homo and the next day boba gifts axe a gun and axe is like ohhhhhh so he Like Likes Me, and adjusts his demeanor accordingly and lowkey signals to the nite owls that they're a Real Partnership Now and certified bachelor Axe Woves is Now Off The Market, thank you very much. [except to non-mandalore-raised boba it was really just a gift and not a romantic gesture but axe takes it otherwise because my man's an ~ idiot ~.] [this goes on for many many months until they get caught in some ambush and boba gets injured and axe brings him back to the nite owls and treats him with such special care and concern that boba is like................ what's going on here. ... woves. what do you think is happening between us. WOVES COME BACK HERE I'M NOT FINISHED WITH YOU]
tl;dr i think they should adopt ragnar together and be dads and re-terraform mandalore and shoot slavers and imperials in the face. i'd write that TV show.
simon kassianides regularly talking about how much he loves boba fett and how formative it was to be playing with boba fett action figures as a kid and how cool it is that he's a mandalorian now too (LIKE BOBA FETT!!!) just makes me want to write axe/boba
#axe woves#boba fett#axe x boba#the mandalorian#hey look at me coming up with brand new innovative ships. consider this a manifesto
