I have ascended to the level of nerdy knits where you spend a solid year modifying patterns, knitting prototypes, and learning to design cable knit patterns in order to make wrist warmers with the Doors of Durin design from The Lord of the Rings: A Musical Tale on them 😂 No regrets.

As a huge Gimli fangirl, I'm very excited that I finally succeeded in replicating this design, which is featured both on the doors and on Gimli's coat in the show! Kudos for the original design to the incredible Simon Kenny! 🙏

So when I told @calaisreno I had conquered a knitted colourwork project a couple weeks ago.... This was it. It has now arrived at its recipient so I CAN SHOW IT OFF lol.

They're mittens, if it's not obvious, lol. The coolest part imo is that the thumbs continue in-pattern, so they blend in niftily.

Anyway, I love them. And I'm rather fond of their recipient, as well.

TNG hat I knit for a friend - she's a photographer, maybe I should have traded it for tips on taking better pictures.

Going to start documenting my knitting work more, I do a lot more than I post, and would like to try finding a con or craft fair to sell some this year - definitely not a thing I can live on but interesting to try.

New thing tried this project: working out a design on a grid to be knit into a piece (the Starfleet logo); I also initially worked this on a wider gauge loom and didn't care for the results - got a better loom for Christmas that let me trial and error this out by New Year's.

I finished the Star Trek kippah!  This was my first attempt at duplicate stitch, and I’m not 100% satisfied with how it turned out, but given that this piece is for me to keep, rather than for sale, I’m pleased enough with it to keep it as is.

So I paused my shirt sewing a few weeks ago because I needed a break from things that involved brain power and problem solving skills. I played Greedfall instead. It was an alright game, not great, not terrible, kinda problematic where I think they missed the mark on the story but it was still good for passing the time. Anyways, back to sewing.

I was down to just the sewing on the little collar. I got stuck on figuring out how long to make it and after two attempts decided it was time to walk away and take a break. Went back to it today and, boy howdy, did I still not get it right. Oof. I went and found some blog posts with tips on how to do it and I really should have done that a while ago. I did so many things wrong. Made it too wide, made it too long, probably stretched out my fabric in my previous attempts and it's a fabric that doesn't readily pop back into shape in that direction so it's an enormous stretched out mess that isn't really fix able or wearable. Sigh.

I also learned after washing my first prototype that the fabric type I bought shrinks a whole lot vertically but not horizontally. Doesn't help with the collar thing at all but I did prewash all of my fabric yesterday and amend my pattern to take it into account. I can fix a shirt that's too long. I'm more limited on one that's too short. Sadly it means leftover fabric I have now isn't enough to make another full mock up. I might be able to make a crop top version though just to try the neckline again.
