The Jock Downstairs (Seto Kaiba One Shot)
Hey all! Remember when I said I was going to make a Seto Kaiba Nerd/Jock one-shot! Well here it is! So many one-shots are set for this weekend! Probably to make up for the one shots I missed and with school underway, I want to get as much out as humanly possible! So here he is! Our favorite nerd-jock!
(Idk why I picked that image but you know what... it’s staying.)
Summary:
You are an advent MMO gamer in charge of a well known raiding guild in the popular game World of Warcraft. During one of your online plays, you meet a group in need of help and invite them to the guild. As they continue to play you become close to the hunter Drakai, and soon find yourself forming an online crush. Which is a much welcome change from the new tenant you keep meeting downstairs in the apartment building's private gym. Between the jerk downstairs and the guy online, your day is never dull.
You just never expected them to be the same person.
Preview:
You heard the glass door to the gym open and slam shut. You glanced back to see the blond had left. Big mood. As you were getting your headset on to listen to a few toons, you saw someone get on the machine next to you. It was the guy. Thinking nothing of you, you pulled out your phone, there were a few messages from the guild on your battlenet app. One was from Magicalhats, you would answer that later.
“Before I have a repeat, the answer is no, I’m not interested.”
You blinked and looked over. The blue-eyed man was looking in your direction. You turned your body to see if anyone was near you, but it was just you and him. You pointed to yourself.
He gave you a dirty look. “Who else.”
Your eyebrows went up. “I have zero intention to hit on you in the most stereo-type place ever.”
“Don’t do it outside of here either. Unless you really think you have the nerve to do so.” There was a smug smirk on his face.
Your eyebrows pushed together. “That is some ego you have there, let me make this point clear. I do not intend to ever hit on you.”
He rolled his eyes. “Then next-time don’t stare.” You saw the smirk widen.
Does this douche get off on rejecting people? But he wasn’t wrong, you did think about it. “Sorry, I don’t date assholes. Nor do I like sitting next to them.”
~
I do enjoy writing Kaiba as he is, smug, egotisical and rather self-centered when he first meets people. So I hope everyone enjoys the story!

Seto Kaiba, also hope ur day's going well :-)
( Character asks! ) Thank you Sammy, I hope yours is too! <333
Why I like them: I made this for a laugh but it actually sums up the archetype I’m weakest for, and in my heart, Seto rules as king of the wounded pretty boy jerks:
I also love how absurdly over-the-top he is about everything. I think if he had to go two days without being melodramatic he’d die.
Why I don’t: The way he treats Joey as subhuman trash still leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
Favorite episode (scene if movie): Yugi vs. Seto at the Battle City semifinals. All the anime mind game switcheroonies they both pull to try and summon their God Cards gets me every time. For a more serious scene, the part when he loses to Noah and he and Mokuba get petrified before they can hug.
Favorite season/movie: BATTLE CITY BATTLE CITY BATTLE CITY. It’s peak Kaiba to me: the literal God complex, the grandiose poses, Kaiba literally taking over the whole city, the gigantic blows to his ego forcing him to rethink everything he holds as true.
Favorite line: I know it’s dub-only, but I’ve gotta give it to “Mokuba, what do I always tell you? If at first you don’t succeed, blast them with your Blue Eyes again!”
Favorite outfit: It’s the Battle City trenchcoat for me, luv. KC Grand Prix suit is a close second.
OTP: Seto x me I confess, I’m actually not a huge shipper! I like him with Ishizu, is that one Trustshipping?
Brotp: Seto x being forced to spend time with the nerd herd and not hating it as much as he expected to despite himself
Head Canon: I think he smells really nice. Clean, with a hint of a spicy cologne.
Unpopular opinion: Hm...I guess I can’t ever see him and Joey working in a relationship. I don’t mind if others ship it, of course.
A wish: For him to find someone other than Mokuba he can trust. Romantically, platonically, anything, just please give that man some positive relationships.
An oh-god-please-dont-ever-happen: I don’t want him to be dead forever post-DSOD. I hate the thought that he’d leave Mokuba behind like that.
5 words to best describe them: Guarded, condescending, proud, surprisingly selfless
My nickname for them: Nerd jock

What I Learned After 'Outgrowing' Card Game Anime
My first favorite anime was based off a massively popular trading card game. Or rather, it might be better to say the massively popular trading card game turned it into what I love. Long-running franchises like Yu-Gi-Oh! haven’t always been about card games, but the parts people remember best always seem to center the game’s consequences: the glory of winning, the heartbreak of defeat, the fiery passion of competition. Recent shows like Cardfight!! Vanguard and the current Shadowverse both follow a similar formula. And also like my other earliest anime loves — red hot shōnen fighting and sports series, the kind full of epic tournament arcs and match-ups — these card shows also chase those high highs and low lows. For as uncool and dorky as a competitive trading card game might sound on paper, I keep finding myself being pulled back in. Not because I’m a technical nerd or obsessive with the mechanics of epic children’s card games but, just like the most epic of spectator sports, I’m always down for organized smackdowns.
Is Rock Lee dropping his weights no better than slamming an Exodia and subjecting your opponent to permanent ego death? With card games on my mind, it was time for me walk down memory lane and find out for myself.
Winners and Losers
“That means you haven't known the triumphs and defeats, the epic highs and lows of high school basketball"
Everyone knows what sports anime are all about: underdogs joining a team, befriending rivals, winners and losers. Most importantly, the whole world revolves around an organized sport with clearly defined rules. In other words, you thrive under competitive pressure or don't — you make the team or don’t. Series like Captain Tsubasa tremendously popularized the sports genre during the '80s, and with that, spearheaded the classic tropes of that genre. An emphasis on the young male demographic beget the rise of popular sports manga like Prince of Tennis and Slam Dunk in magazines like Weekly Shōnen Jump. With Slam Dunk ending its serialization in Jump in June of 1996, Kazuki Takahashi’s Yu-Gi-Oh! would begin that subsequent September in the same year, right at the tail-end of that sports manga’s fever-pitch popularity. Closely following in 1999 was the Wizards of the Coast-sponsored Duel Masters franchise aimed at a younger audience, further cementing the card game genre’s place in the male demographic. Stories hyper fixated on a singular competitive game were still hot — even if they didn't assume the standard sports-themed shape.
Yami Yugi puts everything on the line dueling Maximillion Pegasus for the first time
Simultaneously publishing alongside Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind and a continuation of Captain Tsubasa, Yu-Gi-Oh! focused on a very broad definition of “games,” making it initially an odd bird among Jump’s typical battle and sports line-up. But that doesn’t mean it wasn’t compelling. After the appearance of the in-series trading card game “Duel Monsters,” demand for a real-life counterpart became so overwhelming that publisher Konami eventually released the game’s first set in 1999. Since then, the card game itself has become the primary force in the series plot. Characters resolve conflicts through card games in flashy duels where, despite just standing around, they revel in quote-worthy monologues about attack phases, trap cards, and their tragic backstories. With that plot integration came a whole new way of exploring larger than life stories, something better than plain advertising. In lieu of special moves or kicking soccer balls, the card game scenario created its own organized ecosystem of winners and losers. There are rules — and if you break them, well, the consequences can be far worse than a bad day at the hobby shop.
Mind Games
Oh to be an anxiety-ridden teen astral projecting in front of a cool dragon
Unlike a typical sports anime, a card game’s rules aren’t always obvious. Everyone knows what basketball is. But what does it mean when your life points drop to zero and you’re exiled from a plucky gang of card game-playing teens, forever destined to angst and booster packs? At first glance, it’s hard to find the real stakes in losing a card game. For example, series like 2011’s Cardfight!! Vanguard don’t necessarily start off on such a dramatic note compared to the heavy hitters like Yu-Gi-Oh. Based on the trading card game published by Bushiroad, Cardfight introduces us to Sendou Aichi, a seemingly hopeless and insecure kid in a world full of deck-wielding jocks. He’s a far cry from the typical hyperactive Jump protagonist. But after years of indulging in bigger-than-life characters dueling for their lives on top of blimps and virtual reality, I found Sendou to be a breath of fresh air. He’s a total newbie and, to be frank, probably more patient than I could ever be when it comes to learning the ins and outs of a competitive tabletop game.
Kai is dead serious about two things: card games and dignity
The more I dove into Cardfight, however, I realized it wasn’t really about mastering the rules or whatever obscure stratagems this week’s bully had up their sleeve. Sure, it’s not meant to be overly complicated, but I couldn’t help deciphering the same story patterns that made me love competitive arcs of shōnen anime in the first place. Like Naruto’s famous Chūnin Exam arc or Yu Yu Hakusho’s Dark Tournament storyline, the context of an organized event changes everything. And best of all, these games characters play are a slow burn, meticulously planned — everything is a mind game.
The earliest parts of Cardfight are spent laying out the rules of the game, but after that, it’s all about Sendou gaining confidence and finding camaraderie. In his first match, he uses a monster called Blaster Blade as his “vanguard,” a kind of astral persona he takes on. Dressed up in Blaster Blade’s armor in Cardfight’s visualization of the playing field (sorry, no Kaiba Corp hologram technology here), Sendou’s adoption of the game as a vehicle for working out anxiety couldn’t be more obvious. Instead of a scared kid, he's now a confident knight, thriving on the astral battlefield. With all the rules on the table, what's left to learn other than the existential aches of teens dueling out adolescent troubles?
Screwing the Rules
Yugi summoned as Dark Magician during Bakura's duel
Admittedly, this moment in Cardfight reminded me of Yu-Gi-Oh’s earliest episodes. During the Duelist Kingdom arc — a competition hosted on an island — protagonist Yugi duels against classmate Bakura. With the use of Bakura's “Change of Heart” card, Yugi and company’s spirits are forced to inhabit iconic duel monsters on the field while Yami, the Egyptian pharaoh possessing Yugi, commands the match. Trapped Yugi and friends are depicted as roleplaying in cosplay — acting out attacks and mock dying. After Yami wins, everyone returns to their bodies as though nothing happened. However, the symbolic implications of this episode are obvious. Not only are our protagonist's psyches tied up in their cards, but so are their sense of worth and how they see themselves. These games give us the very special privilege of seeing their inner-lives uncoil with every attack phase, card draw, and strategic retreat.
Seto Kaiba loudly announces his new dueling tournament from a blimp, because of course why not
I’ve tried watching real, high-stakes world title trading card game matches. They’re boring. No one is astral projecting into the body of a cool sword guy. Tournament-style arcs like Yu-Gi-Oh's Duelist Kingdom and Battle City will always have a special place in my heart for their outrageous seriousness. The card game anime is inevitably tiered: you learn player backstories, their shortcomings, their hubris. Everyone, no matter their eccentric gimmick, has a story hook. Learning niche mechanics and why a kid is emotionally imprinted on a mass-produced trading card is its own shibboleth. Not “getting it” otherwise leads to everything looking just plain silly. The closest real-life comparisons I can think of are the melodramatic reels that play right before wrestling matches or the Super Bowl. What’s to lose? Not the game. But the legendary, mythic athletic persona behind the player.
Regardless of arcane gameplay, gibberish, or flashy cards, the unchallenged fiery hype and love that goes into fleshing out this particular genre and its characters is what keeps dragging me back in. I might not get a lick of what activates a card trigger or the hot new meta. I can always learn that later. Underneath the exaggeration and dramatic card tricks, however, was a sincerity I didn’t expect to find even though I’m older. Despite my time away, maybe the heart of the cards never truly left me after all.

Seto Kaiba – Confession of the Exaggerated Dramatic Flashy Jock-Nerd Head Cannon
Now most of us picture Kaiba, once he is older, to be tamer. What if, like GX hints at, Kaiba is still as much as a time bomb, makes no sense why he is doing this or thinking this way, nut that is much to loud and enjoys shooting things to outter space, Mr. I-will-make-duel-monsters-into-a-real-career-around-the-world and Mr. Ha-look-at-my-card-game-school type guy. You know, the guy that nearly screamed his intentions to the world and declared what was his while showing off that he can use a Jetback. The impulsive, fuck work I have duel monsters to play, dude.
What if that whole package became even bigger?
The day Kaiba realizes he likes you, the day he even feels the warm and fuzzies appear. He will test out just how much he gets those warm and fuzzies.
Somehow, Kaiba ends up being at all public events you attend. Went to a Comic Con? Kaiba is there promoting something but will abandon his station to walk around with you. Enjoying a parade? He has a float but puts supervision in someone else’s hand so he can hang around you. Just walking around town? Well somehow you just ended up eating with the CEO.
If you point out why he seems to be everywhere, he will be rather and shockingly honestly. “You have captured my interest. I have yet to determine if I like you.” He is so blunt it feels like a punch in the face.
If you haven’t asked and he does figure out he likes you… its not a simple confession.
Kaiba does not care where you were, what you were doing, or what time of day it is. Once he has come to the final conclusion, he likes someone well, he will show up. Be it at your work or at some ungodly hour of the night.
Kaiba has spent time with you to figure out his feelings, so when he confesses it’s a whole dog and pony show. Those little nick-nacks you were looking at?? Expect the whole collection being offered to you. Enjoy food? He will arrive with basket of whatever your favorite is, wine, and dessert. There will be some kind of gift in hand.
But the gift wouldn’t be enough. Oh no. The CEO does have a way with words…and dramatics. Expect him to be loud, firm, and flashy about this confession. He will yell it from the rooftops if he must (which he kind of does anyway).
He finds out you have a thing for romantic movies or romantic dramas, Kaiba will play into it. Wither it be he spins you into a fiery, passionate kiss that makes your head spin or is on his knees embracing your torso declaring that you accept his heart, he will be nothing which you expect.
Should you be in public… the whole ball game will change.
At work? Expect the security of Kaiba corp. to bust in through the doors and demand you come with them. This might leave you terrified, thinking you somehow made the CEO mad, but in reality, he just doesn’t want to deal with your boss or coworkers.
You dare to be out in public and refuse the limo ride… embarrassment might flare due to his dramatic nature.
Kaiba will rollup in his limo. His security clearing a path right to where you are standing. He won’t care if he has to stop traffic or disturb a whole restaurant. Oh lord if it is a restaurant. The CEO will sit himself down at your table and rule this encounter a date.
Just out in public? Ask him what is with the all the security, Kaiba will be smooth as butter. “They came to make sure the person I will be dating is safe. Afterall, who else is worthy of my heart?” With a gentle stroke of your cheek with the back of his hand and that killer smolder/smirk.
Kaiba played to your fancies like a professional violinist.
Not one for public or dramatic confessions? Don’t worry, he just won’t be as flashy.
Kaiba will invite you to a fancy business party, then explain to all his guest how perfect you are next to him. You better get the hint because if you don’t, expect one of the above to happen.
The whole thing could seem very Yandere-ish, but don’t fear. Should you reject him, while he over exaggerate how much you hurt him, he won’t push you. Nor will he awkwardly be around your favorite places.
Kaiba will be a dramatic bitch whenever you enter the room. Making it really clear while being loud how much he dislikes you being near him. Announce when he is leaving or where he is going like he’s an actor explaining the plot to a drama.
Don’t worry, he is just doing this in case you change your mind and want to follow after him.
But oh man…when you start dating him.
For that, you’ll have to wait till the fanfic one-shot! Hahaha! I really enjoyed the idea of a loud, dramatic Kaiba. Honestly this is mostly born from the English dub Kaiba because… the man is a Drama Queen. I will post when the chapter is up!
Also look towards a guided tour update come tonight!

Let’s Talk Music and Kaiba
Alright, so it would seem, not only is our Dragon Nerd a well, geek and nerd but also a Nerd-Jock. Something I am very excited to do headcannon on later, but first, we can all agree, or at least most of us agree Kaiba in cannon, does play the Guitar due the official art which is this.
(We’ll talk about Atem and his singing at a later point cause... oh god wow that massup)
So correct me if I am wrong, but that is official art. But if memory is right, this is.
Thus, I ask, why is it we only see Kaiba or better, read of Kaiba only enjoying Classical in near all fanfiction? I think there are so many missed opportunities with this! Like, sure, there are AU’s I am sure of him being a rockstar, but guys. Do you know what this means? The most adorable image has never been drawn or if it has, it’s no where to find.
Seto Kaiba plays the guitar to help Mokuba sleep at night.
Kaiba more likely at some point, Sang Mokuba to sleep.
I quote from Yugioh Japanese Sub “I am your father now” Noah Arc
My dudes, ladies, they and more. How is there not more fanfic as Kaiba as a dad?!
But I am losing the point of this post.
Kaiba does not only listen to classic music. Do I think everyone thinks that is the case, of course. Seto Kaiba is stressed out, has meetings, needs to do presentations, travels. I am sure Classic music is used to keep him at baseline. He plays a guitar, he knows he could lose himself in a good solo.
So picture this:
Seto Kaiba comes home from a long day at work, he has done all he needs to do for the day. However he still feels the pent-up energy in him needing some kind of release, but his body is already exhausted from the day’s travel. Mind, just wants to lose itself in something sublet and mundane. First he tries a nice long shower, he feels more relaxed, but the stress of the day is still there and the lurking enemy cries for release.
He knows exercise would just make getting up tomorrow on time worse. If he pulls out a good book to read, his mind will want to pick it all apart. Dueling is out of the question as the computer program he made still can’t beat him and Yugi would chew him out for waking him at the ungodly hour of the day.
Sighing, he runs a hand through still wet hair. He needs to get this feeling gone or he’ll never sleep tonight. Going into his closet, he pulls out the hard leather case. In the sanctuary of his bedroom, knows he won’t be disturbed. On the balcony, he knows the sounds will travel and have a less likelihood of waking his younger brother. Sitting on the rail to the balcony, he leans his back against one of the pillars. Kaiba knows how relaxed he can get from the activity, and he doesn’t wish to fall off and cause more problems.
The night is still young as the moon hasn’t set, and it’s in it’s waning crescent phrase. There are a few clouds here and there, but nothing too much to cover the stars. Mansion dark, quiet, he pulls out his old guitar, one he got in high-school. Many of his tutors when he was a child, wanted him to pick up the violin or piano due to his finger dexterity, but they never pleased him.
With a deep inhale his fingers align themselves. Kaiba doesn’t feel like singing tonight and he wants a steady build towards the melody’s climax. Fingers begin playing at the cords. Within the first minute Kaiba’s head sways to the rhythm. By the time he reaches the rift he enjoys most, there is a smile on his face, one he doesn’t notice he is doing. Before long his body begins moving in such little ways, it is clear he has lost himself the moment the rift happens.
There a complete contentment. The energy he had stored, all being released without causing him any pains, won’t affect his work, and allows for his body and mind to work absented mindlessly. One of the very few times his body isn’t tense nor is he scrawling.
As he comes to the end, he let’s the note linger. He won’t put the guitar away, he is much to tired now for that. He leaves it near the balcony door. Going to bed, sleep comes so much easier. However, as he sleeps, the music still wants to be played. Every so often his fingers will twitch to match the cords.
Stairway to Heaven never ended.
**
I MEAN COME ON!!! We need more of this!!!! So much more of a guitar playing Seto who then plays soccer and buys Dragon plushies! Like seriously, classical is fine, but our boy does like other music!
Ugh!
Well, I hope you all enjoyed that! Hahaha! Thats my headcannon!
