Ever seen a softer side to a 6 to 10-meter-long Jurassic pliosaur that is almost always portrayed as some sort of literal sea-monster?

After having devoured some icthyosaurs to sustain her growing fetus several months earlier, a mother Liopleurodon ferox bonds with her cow-sized calf in the warm, shallow Callovian seas that cover what will one day be Saint Laon, France. Very recently this year a postcranial skeleton belonging to a 3-meter-long juvenile Liopleurodon has just been described from the same location. It is the most complete fossil of the plesiosaur found on French soil, provides much valuable information about its skeletal anatomy, and can also serve as a possible neotype for a pliosaur genus that was once described from a single tooth by Frenchman Henri Émile Sauvage in 1873.

Niolamia is a fascinating turtle. Living during the Eocene (probably), it is one of the earliest known meiolaniids. What makes meiolaniids special is not just that they were sizable land turtles, but two other things 1) The massive horn-like scales, primarily those marked A-C. Niolamia has some of the most impressive ones at that, with the A scale forming an almost ceratopsian-like frill at the back of the head and two large, flattened, side-ways directed horns before said frill. 2) The long tail was armored, covered in bony rings with spikes and in some species even a straight up tail club

The two images above are things I put together for the Wikipedia page of Niolamia. The first shows the growth of the species. The small skull is a juvenile Niolamia, originally described as Crossochelys but synonymized by later researchers. The bigger skull (to scale) is the neotype (or holotype?) of Niolamia. Check out an older post for some history on that. The other is a simple sideview of the skull and lower jaw, nothing too fancy.

The bottom two photos aren't mine but those of Victoria Arbour, but show the weirdness and size nicely. The first image shows Niolamia (right) next to Ninjemys (left). While the second picture shows Ninjemys with as I said Victoria Arbour. Which still gives a good idea of how big these animals heads were.

A partial dinosaur tooth, possibly an indeterminate carcharodontosaurid from the Elrhaz Formation in Gadoufaoua, Niger. Originally this specimen was assumed to have come from the Middle Jurassic Irhazer Group based on the odd morphology. However, with the description of Tameryraptor markgrafi based on the destroyed Egyptian specimen previously referred to Carcharodontosaurus saharicus, these shark-like teeth may belong to an undescribed carcharodontosaurid from the Elrhaz Formation related to Tameryraptor. Most carcharodontosaurids, including the Algerian holotype (Megalosaurus saharicus) tooth taxon and Moroccan neotype of Carcharodontosaurus have typical knife-like teeth common to the clade and that the shark-like tooth morphology was assumed to be an inaccurate illustration done by the German paleontologist Ernst Stromer. But it has turned out that this is indeed what the teeth looked like in Tameryraptor. If this tooth is from the Elrhaz Formation, this unknown species would have lived alongside another carcharodontosaurian, Eocarcharia dinops. It is still possible this tooth is not carcharodontosaurid, but an odd Middle Jurassic theropod from the Irhazer Group.

okay cool so the Coastal Green Hairstreak (C. viridis) might be a subspecies of the Sheridan's Hairstreak (C. sheridanii) but it sounds like nobody really agrees about this and for a while they thought it was a subspecies of the Lotus Hairstreak (C. dumetorum) and Wikipedia still lists it as a synonym for C. dumetorum and lists "Coastal Green Hairstreak" as a common name for that???

i was reading the beltorchika's children manga and first of all amuro staying with beltorchika that long is bonkers. and they try to make her likable too but that didnt work on me cause i watched zeta. when the 2 months old fetus inside of her uses their neotype powers to shield amuro's gundam from char's beams i stopped reading

Like, sharing life experiences, how we move around us and our hyperfocuses, it's difficult to share my way of thinking and even interests with a neotypical person, It's not impossible, obviously, but the person doesn't understand what you're going through, your quirks, habits, your interests, everything sounds more complicated to the person.

In addition to the prejudice you face about being neurodivergent, all this along with the fact that you generally don't find anyone who has gone through or at least understands what you go through, from the environmental to the emotional sense.

Since I almost didn't find anyone outside of social media who knows what it's like to have a spect, disorder, syndrome like me, Many people are now talking about their difficulties, their lives, their interests, everything, accepting themselves as autistic, bipolar, ADHD and much more, without fear of what they are going through, accepting how the person is, and that should not be judged

Old Photographs of a New Dinosaur

Old archives often hold surprises, bringing to light information leading to new discoveries. This is the case of some dinosaur remains unearthed in 1914 at Ain Gedid in the Bahariya Formation (Egypt). Those fossils (fragments of skull, vertebrae, pubis, ischium, femurs, and fibula) were described in 1931 by the German paleontologist Ernst Stromer von Reichenbach, who assigned them to a new genus, Carcharodontosaurus. Unfortunately, the original material was transferred to Munich and was destroyed during World War II. However, in 1996, a carcharodontosaurid skull was discovered in Morocco: thanks to its dental features, it was thought to replace the lost Egyptian remains as the neotype— the single specimen designated as the type of a species or subspecies—of Carcharodontosaurus saharicus. Yet, the comparisons had been superficial, partly because Stromer’s dinosaur seemed irretrievably missing.

The breakthrough came from archival documents. In addition to Stromer’s descriptive drawings and an endoscopic cast of the cranial box kept in Berlin, two photographs of the Egyptian specimen emerged: one, never previously described, held at the Huene Archive of the University of Tübingen, and a second one showing the jaw in medial view, recently rediscovered, taken while the specimen was on display at the “Alte Akademie” in Munich, the paleontological museum before its destruction in 1944.

New data reveal that the Egyptian fossil differs significantly from the Moroccan one. In other words, it is not Carcharodontosaurus saharicus, but a new genus and a distinct species. Major differences include a medially inclined nasal articulation, the development of the antorbital fossa emargination on the nasals, a small nasal horn, more pronounced rugosities on the nasal and maxillary bones, more symmetrical teeth, and peculiarities in the cerebral endocast— the internal imprint of the skull. Current estimates suggest that this new dinosaur was almost 10 meters long.

These features led researchers to name the new species Tameryraptor markgrafi. “Tameryraptor” combines Ta-mery (an ancient Egyptian appellation meaning “beloved land”) with the Latin word raptor (“thief, predator”), while “markgrafi” honors Richard Markgraf, the Austrian collector who discovered many fossils later studied by Stromer. With this discovery, the history of Egyptian fossils gains a new chapter, sparked by black-and-white snapshots.
