Today is the birthday of the late Ed Asner. Many are familiar with him as the voices of Carl Fredricksen from Up, Santa from Elf, and Hudson from Gargoyles, as well as Lou Grant from the Mary Tyler Moore Show and the aptly named, Lou Grant (series).

Back in the mid 2000's, my family and I were staying at a very large expensive house that belonged to friends of my parents as guests. They had a larger cable package than we did back at home, and they had ToonDisney. I remember seeing Gargoyles while staying there, on the "Hangin' with the Heroes" block in the evening. I remember seeing this show very vaguely as a younger kid, but I must not have been older than 6 or 7 or so given the original air dates.

I was totally enamored with these characters almost instantly. I hopped on their upscale internet, and immediately perused various Disney media sites at the time and started going down the rabbit hole with what little material the internet had back in like 2004 about the show. I learned about the cast, Greg Weisman's blog Station 8, and somehow convinced my parents to upgrade our cable so I could watch it. I even made a Neopets Fanpage about the show, and I have no idea if it's still around.

I don't have a lot of specific memories about Hudson being my favorite, or even having a particularly verbose knowledge of the show back them, but I DO remember becoming familiar and fond of Ed Asner, seeing a teaser for Up, learning he was in it, and that detail making it NECESSARY for me to watch it on release day.

I remember the evening before watching Up, and enjoying it, but I rewatched it with my mom a few days later. I am not sure what was different here, but I became OBSESSED. I joined a Pixar fan site, became a highly active member, and began absolutely marathoning this film. I also spent 5 hours one evening with a mechanical pencil, very little drawing skill, and drew this. (apologies, the picture is 14 years old and washed out)

To be clear, this was EXTREMELY out of nowhere. I had never drawn anything remotely this detailed before. So I (quite ignorantly, but still strongly) decided to change college majors and pursue art. Still workin' on that one...

Down the line, I ultimately watched Up in theaters 50 times, held movie nights for the fansite over Skype, made multiple forum signatures for myself and other members, and even got invited to Pixar, and met a lot of Pixar leadership (albeit briefly for most).

At the center of this though, Ed Asner was responsible for me gravitating to these characters. I've been pretty consistently enamored with his brand of wholesome curmudgeonry.

(I just made up that word, and I like it, so it's real now)

In any case, I've always felt a bit odd for having an attachment to an actor that hit his acting stride while being middle-aged in the 70s, 20 years before I was even alive - like I'm the only person my age that even knows this guy existed.

I had never gotten to meet Ed, but I did make an attempt shortly before he passed. It didn't work out, but his son Matt runs a charity organization called The Ed Asner Family Center that focuses on supporting individuals and families with autism and neurodivergence. I was fortunate enough to join an early screening of Dug Days before it released on Disney + thanks to a fundraiser by the center, including a Zoom Q&A with Ed. The thing I noticed during the call is that Ed was so immensely quick-witted, absolutely hilarious, and would not leave his piece unsaid. He had an astoundingly magnetic personality. It wasn't open mic, but I managed to get a question through - "What was it that got you into acting?"

Jonas Rivera, the Producer of Up was moderating the call and Ed about verbally trampled the guy by the time he was getting the last few words out, and he knew exactly what he wanted to say.

I don't have the exact words, but it boiled down to "escapism" - which was a bit shocking to me. You've got a former president of SAG, who'd been acting for longer than I have been a living person, and he was immediately compelled to tell everyone that the reason he got into showbusiness is to run from the world and its problems. It was remarkably humble.

Ed passed away exactly a week later. I couldn't eat for 2 days, I was so distraught.

I highly recommend that folks check out a lot of the acting Ed has done. He's absolutely brilliant, and one of the most fun people to watch. He was intimidatingly witty, and yet seemed like the guy who would talk to just about anyone. And then make them laugh their sides off.

I haven't shared my deep admiration for Ed too often other than with folks closest to me, but Ed Asner was a precious gem of a human being, and embodies a lot of things I think the world - particularly folks of the male persuasion - should have a bit more of.

Here's to you, Ed. Have a happy birthday up there for us, big guy. We love ya. <3

(side note, the portrait at the top, I drew to commemorate his first birthday after he passed in 2021. The picture at the bottom was drawn, but not adequately finished imo, about 2 weeks before he left us. I need to give it a proper redo someday)

No fic listed but all titles are either from songs titles or lyrics bc I’m like let’s set a mood I’m terrible at making up my own titles

I identify with Felix a lot. He’s young and idealistic and unsure of himself. And I think my little ocs Mara and Elena. But that’s because I like making OCs that are just some guy and I think well would an average person react this way or that way to this?

Captain Saryla Marcohn the robot Eyrie

Captain Marcohn and her crew joined the Neopian Federation of Worlds' deep space exploratory and defense service, Starfleet, pretty much by accident. Young and headstrong, working and living aboard the Happenstance isn't everything she'd hoped for, but it's certainly not boring.

Once the first licensed medical practitioner in Neopian space, Dr. Pricari originally died over a hundred years pre-warp era in a tragic shuttle accident. For some reason he returned as a spirit, but got right back to work doing what he did best in life. He doesn't like to talk about it.

Able to morph and change their shape at will, the NSS Happenstance's chef and resource proprietor Ringo is often roped into using their abilities in dangerous situations. Genuinely didn't know the neoboards existed. For some reason thought the neoboards link led to the employee side of neopets. Pretty sure my parents lied. This will be a common theme.

Neopets was the most popular game in the whole world. So was Bella Sara. Both of these time you for the duration you were on their website and gave you bad things if you were on too long.

You have to have an 18+ drivers license and scan it in and wait three to five business days to access any website with the warning or else the police will come into your house and cut your phone cord. (Dial up) Once cord is cut, it can never be repaired.

Safe websites were any websites that were linked somewhere on a website that you had previously been allowed to visit. Of note, this is the 2002 onwards internet, so I was allowed to visit any website that was linked on the bottom of the geocities or WordPress sites in their affiliated websites list. Anywhere else had viruses.

If you catch an internet virus the police have to come and cut your phoneline so you can't go on the internet and accidentally infect other people. 🥲

Pictures could be saved on the computer but needed a special code to be printed. Word documents did not. Our family's code was lost in 2006. This turns out to be a lie my father told us because he got tired of us using our two sheets a day, backwards and front on cat pictures.

You cannot save any dress up game pictures ever despite what they say because that is a lie. Instead stare at outfits. Be proud. Try to remember what you did. But don't stare too long.

You could go blind from looking at a computer screen for over an hour straight. (I had a sister. Turns.)

If you use staples near a computer they will magnetize to the keyboard. Turns out, no. We were just kids with no fine motor skills and would bring our spoils back to the desk and clumsily staple over the keys until my dad got tired.

It was completely normal for computers to have no sound or speakers and there was no way to hook them up. 2001-2006. Dad didn't want us to blow a speaker playing Sims music. Ironically I think we had a cd with it on for our radio and I think that my parents fancier computer might have had speakers, because we knew it was music from the Sims.

You should never ever ever download music online because you will get a virus and the police will come to cut the phone cord and end your internet forever. You can, however, go to the library and pick out CDs to rip from to burn on your yearly ream of CDs, but you have to check out a book too because libraries will not let you check out anything else if you do not have a book.

Very normal for every child to have a USB they're encouraged to put their favorite digital things on that their parents engrave with their names or write on in sharpie.

We cannot eat by the computer because otherwise we have to vacuum it more than twice a year, and then they will suck up all the cords. They did this. They literally vacuumed our PC. My dad said it was because we had long hair and it just got in the tower. He worked for IBM and built computers for a living so idk.

If you put your feet on the computer desk you will get a permanent hunch and your back bones will fuse together. GENUINELY A COMMON PROBLEM. Dad didn't want feet juice on the keyboard when he had to fix it

Going on the computer in a wet swimsuit could lead to electrocution

The only computer games on CD ROM in the world were the ones we owned and nancy drew. Nancy drew was an adult only game and you cannot buy it without a driver's license. There is only one. No one owns it. Very scary. Play Scooby Doo instead. (Parents had invested heavily in Scooby doo. Were afraid Nancy was too scary because of the ghost on the box.)

Anytime the Internet is bad it is because of hornets. This turned out to be true, as we had a nest on the receiver of our house towards the end. Charter man was stung 27 times.

Creature Feature Friday

 I bet you all thought I forgot - I Didn’t. I was just busy with work, BUT HERE WE GO. In honor of today being Bori Day you get my Fav Bori - who is also deliciously Halloween flavored (Literally).

Everyone, meet Kurbis! Or, on Neopets, “Dooms”.

Kurbis is a small, mythical creature, called a Jackaferret. When he was born he was blessed by the stars and the sky - and given a strange gift. The ability to make pumpkins (specifically) grow or shrink with the power of starlight. He can transfer the power through any part of his body - but he generally likes to use his nose. He moved into a deserted lot by a town bothered with a lot of.....paranormal creatures called “Estwix”. The land he settled into was a small estate just outside the town. The previous owners were fairly well off - but had met with some....extremely unfortunate demises. It was thought the family had been possessed by spirits that drove them to not only destroy each other - but also the farm they lived on. The land had been salted and razed, the building was half burnt and the bodies were never recovered. The land was left to ruin for many years - becoming an urban legend and a place many of the people of Estwix avoided (of course, some of the younger members would head up to explore....and most of them would come back).

It all changed one day, when Kurbis arrived. Suddenly amid the ruined land and fallen apart house...A pumpkin patch appeared. This alarmed many of the villagers. Nothing had grown there for years, and now suddenly a patch of pumpkins just appeared? They didn’t even grow - they were just there one day. Kurbis settled in quite happily, and was content to let the villagers to their thing. He was happy in his quiet space with all his pumpkins. But then the little girl appeared.

She was sweet, and had started coming out at night to adore the pumpkins. She marveled at their sizes and wondered how some could be so small! Kurbis had started noticing she would come around at least once a week and left a small pumpkin for her by the fence that the villagers had built to ‘encourage’ everyone to stay away. When she reached to take it, she saw him, staring at her with wide sparkling eyes. Humans, truthfully, fascinate Kurby. He had hoped the pumpkin would be a gift of many - perhaps she would be his friend. And to his pleasant surprise she smiled and then darted away to her home.

Her story of the ‘cute small creature in the pumpkin patch’ turned into a huge monstrous demon living in the pumpkin patch to lure children away by the end of the day...So the little girl countered with a legend she made up, hoping to get the villagers to calm down. Estwix had plenty of real monsters to deal with as it was.

            “If you leave candy by the fence the night before Halloween - the Dooms’ monster of the Pumpkin Patch will leave a jack o’lanturn on your doorstep - Marking you safe for the year.”

Which in turn pleased Kurbis. He grew all manner of pumpkins for the children, and in the dead of the night he placed them all on their doorsteps as a thank you for the candy they left him (even the ones who brought him vegetables or odds and ends from their farms or homes).

Kurbis has become a happy Local Legend, and once a year he’s the Pumpkin Clause of Estwix in return for your sweets!

One time when I was in like 7th or 8th grade I was having one of my first (in memory) big insomnia cycles and I remember being awake at like 4 am and the only light on in my room was a dim little table lamp (because my mom would've been pissed if she knew I was awake in the middle of the night) and for whatever reason I was staring into this little magnetic neopets mirror in my room that used to be in my locker in like 5th grade.... And I stared and stared into that little mirror for probably almost half an hour, barely blinking, and I remember watching my appearance shift and morph into different forms of myself...... The pretty me, the tired and haggard me, the grown up me, the male version of myself....... And I stopped when I started watching my image shift into that of an old lady, because it freaked me out. I could see where I might develop wrinkles as I get much older and I remember clearly watching the bags under my eyes and sag in my jawline develop and it terrified me lol

I remember my grandma telling me not to look into mirrors after dark throughout my childhood (nana is big into superstitions) and I remember tossing the little mirror into a pile of dirty clothes and refusing to touch it for a couple days, because shit man, grandma might be onto something and I really should not have been fucking with divination like that

A congregation of deities in a familiar yet unusual place. I was there among them, watching and observing as myself. Most definitely strange to be in the living room of my relative. Though we all agreed (many times in the waking world), that place has some unique power to it. There was a flat-screen tv playing a crusty looking live opera. I didn't know what it was.

I spoke with this sea god who looked too much like a friend. He had golden eyes and long dirty-blonde hair. I sat next to him, his call like a siren in the ocean. It was a slight yank in my soul but nothing more. He tried to flirt and I held my ground saying I am happily taken. Still, he persisted, asking (more like compelling) he get to place a kiss upon my cheek. I told him that I'd tell Lio and he scoffed. I felt sleepy here, resisting his efforts until the static sounds of sleep came. I awoke and he complained that, "all goddesses were the same never want a kiss nor anything else". I furrowed my brows and left the area.

I was saddened. Always get sad and uncomfortable after encounters like that. I remember swimming in water to get to my golden boy's home. Out of a lake or ocean, I do not know. I had picked up this necklace with a magnetic charm holder. The piece was missing but I soon found the ocean wave picture it was. I collected it to share with my golden boy, he'd know what to do.

I entered our home and he was in the kitchen. I sniffled and he looked at me. He spoke softly, as much as he could given the gravel of his voice. He asked if I needed him to make the protection seal again. I hugged him and cried into his chest. His left arm held me while he doodled with his right hand. I gave him the necklace so we could have it investigated and I told him about the people in our backyard just partying. This made him irate but he only lightly scolded the woman he knew would invite more people.

At some point, he brought us to the authorities to file the report. He had somehow gathered more information and was relaying it to the people. At some point he vanished within the dream, a common theme when he is in mine, and I had to speak on his behalf. Either he reappeared after that was done or whatever, but a scream ripped through the air. It was close but not immediate.

My dream changed around here. It was a bunch of arcade nonsense and neopets plushies.
