honestly it is sort of charming to me that the ATLA fandom has been hung up on the same imaginary teenage love triangle for fifteen years...personally I feel like it is NOT my business if Katara and Aang want to get married too young and have like a million children. godspeed to them, or whatever. but Sokka and Suki should definitely absorb Zuko into whatever they've got going on, mostly because I think it would be hysterical for two non-benders who can pass for straight if they do not open their mouths to have a regular third who is the hereditary monarch of the fire magicians. can you imagine. there's just a king in your house sometimes, rummaging half-naked through your fridge for snacks and complaining about how people keep trying to have him assassinated, and you can't tell anyone about it. hilarious dynamic.

I have no particular stance on whether estrogen would have saved Shinji, but I'm looking at it from the family dynamic angle, and... well, Jesus Christ. On a good day, Shinji already looks like a teenage soft butch version of Yui Ikari – can you imagine how Gendo would react to his "son" slowly morphing into his dead wife?

the way they kinda learn from one another... I like to think that asuka's words on the elevator made rei think.

asuka's self affirming humanity gave rei the right words to declare herself as her own persona, far from gendo's desires, as well as accept her non-human soul and decide what to do with it. instead of losing herself in other, via sacrificing selflessness (which can be noble, but it's no good for a person without self preservation) that ends in death or disassociation, she puts her own self first at the end and her own will.

rei's acceptance of her bounds with others (as they are inevitable and fighting against them it's even more painful) helped asuka to open her heart to the eva and accept the help of others (in this case, her mother's soul). she stops rejecting and pushing away the other (the first other every baby knows, the mother) and is capable of being honest and allow the unit-02 to aid her in combat. they fight together, in a partnership that's only possible with trust.

rei learned to embrace her self and asuka learned to accept the other.

on twitter, i wrote a thread about asuka+rei as constitutive parts of a greater whole—a whole that, i think, fears+resents+rejects itself. rei is the first; asuka is the second. they are visual opposites: rei is blue; asuka is red. and their temperaments, at least at first, are similarly opposite: cold/hot, quiet/loud. they represent the collective vs the individual, the self sufficient vs self sacrificing.

but their visual/thematic opposition is insufficient analysis. @qmisato​ makes this same point​. she (rightfully) observes that treating these two as irreconcilable or mutually exclusive characters comes at the expense of understanding the structural work they do for nge’s narrative+themes. i agree, and would further argue that asuka+rei are externalizations of an estranged interiority that they hide from themselves+others. when asuka “meets” rei and rei “meets” asuka, they confront their negated Self (alterity?), acting out the very tension that instrumentality allegedly resolves.
