Really though, eroticism is SO central to Evangelion, and any discussion or analysis of the show that dismisses or fails to acknowledge that is....deeply flawed at best. And not just between Shinji and Asuka, but also between Shinji and Misato&Rei&Kaworu, and between Misato&Asuka and Kaji, etc.... it's a ubiquitous thematic throughline and frequently recurring character motivation in the show. Viewers sometimes discount the promenence of sexuality in Evangelion as some combination of fanservice, comedy, or "cheap" pathos, but I'd contend that sex and (sexual) desire is something that the show addresses very seriously, and not at all cynically. Misato and Kaji's scene near the end of Episode 20 is a prime example of this, in my view, but it's not the only one.

i feel like NGE glosses over this aspect of their dynamic & ultimately ofc it turns out this isn't really what happened but like. can u imagine if your mother died right in front of you and your father responded by immediately abandoning you and you're devastated
and as you grow up i imagine you'd be like ok i'm still devastated but looking back i can see that he wasn't in a place to be primary caregiver to a child and i guess i can respect that
but then when you finally reunite with him you realise that he had in fact adopted another child your age in the interim so it's not even that he didn't want to be a father he just didn't want to be your father
Shinji shows frankly impressive restraint i think he could & should have eaten Gendo's face like an angry chimpanzee
