A sketchbook drawing of my oc Henry wax pastel. I scanned the sketch before coloring because I was afraid I would ruin it with color. Henry is a dad-pan character, which I find tricky to draw.

Your art is crazy pretty and is super inspiring, if you dont mind me asking, what materials do you use for your traditional works?

I use a small variety of things, but my big loves at the mo are watercolours and fountain pen ink!

I have a couple fountain pens I can refill with a variety of inks depending on what colour I want, and they tend to be water soluable so you can use a waterbrush to wash them out and create really nice effects. Makes it so nice and easy to make a 'painting' on the go.

For my watercolours I have a small box with 12 colours (a mid yellow, a cool and warm red, a cool and warm blue, cool and warm green, two earth tones and 2 neutral tones, and admittedly 1 white gouache for lightening and opacity) and I find these cover all my mixing needs, I find it so fun and rewarding to mix colours! Not only are they super versatile and easy to use but since they're all dry in pans and rewettable for use, they're suuper portable and easy to clean up (essential for me bc I'm lazy; if I don't make things easy for myself, I'll never use it) it's so easy to throw in a bag, keep in a pocket, quickly bring out to do a fast painting wherever I am, and throw it back in a bag without any cleanup.

I also have a very limited palette of gouache (6 colours: white, mid yellow, cool red, warm and cool blue, black (though I wanna switch this to a brown)) which is a lil harder to mix with but again it's so rewarding to mix colours right, and I don't feel like I need much more gouache. Adding white gouache to watercolours makes them almost into a gouache themselves.

For non-painty stuff I have a few neocolor 2s (watersoluable wax pastels, quite popular with sketchbookers) colour pencils, and tombow markers (also watersoluable, and also popular with sketchbookers/stationery enthusiasts lmao) they're really nice to combine altogether for a nice variety of textures! Even tho I can't mix colours with these I try to keep my palettes really limited, not only to challenge myself but so I don't go crazy spending money lmao

Study: making pastel traces less visible. Using Caran D'Ache Neocolor II Aquarelle pastels.

Test 1 below, doing random nonsense: looks gross. I hate my diagonal strokes, and using a dry pastel on a barely wet paper makes the pigment embed into the paper in a way that's hard to smudge later. (At least with just a brush)

Test 2 below: only drawing dry pastels on dry paper, then smudging with a wide wet brush. Looks good. Wasn't trying to do anything special; it could be made better if I used a variety of brushes and stroke directions, but that wasn't the point today.

I like that the color intensity / pigment density could still vary from light to saturated, and both of them wouldn't leave visible pastel marks behind.

Test 3 below: Tried to use exclusively wet paper for the pastels. No brushes.

This turned out better than expected (for not using a brush). Some pastels seem to be softer than others - i.e. the purple ("lilac"), no matter how wet I tried to get the paper, it still left traces behind. Possibly could be fixed with some brush work.

An obvious lesson - wetting the paper is not enough, it needs time to soak in. Also, not sure if I love this particular paper (Clairefontaine Aquarelle Etival 300g/m cold pressed) - the grain looks like a videogame texture, not sure if I can explain it better. But again, not to blame my lack of skill on the paper.

100dayproject - day 3

Another face is here for the #100dayproject on day 3! ✨ This page started as a light sketch with a green colored pencil that you can barely see. Sometimes I like to draw light lines so that later I can come with more strong ones. To add color, I used Caran d’Ache neocolors 2 crayons and later I have activated them with water. I might add more later, but for now I’m gonna leave it like it is,…

Still figuring out neocolor 2 pastels but did this little wintery sketch. I like how it forces me to not do detail. Also learned to not use pencil to lay things out unless I want to do many many layers

As I continue on my water media adventure, I’m learning things…😁

I was so fearful at starting a watercolor, letting it dry, and then continuing on. I always felt I would screw it up.

Now I feel more confident moving forward.

I also have a pad of Yupo synthetic paper, so I’m experimenting in watercolor with that. It’s the last pic in an abstract style.

The 4 pack is all watercolor with Caran d’ Ache Neocolor 2 accents except for the one on the upper right, that’s just watercolor. 😁
