Tatsuki Fujimoto: Fire Punch

10/ Sometimes reading this felt like someone was chewing on my kidneys. @mr-double-downer recommended it, and I also knew Tatsuki Fujimoto from Chainsaw Man, but I was not prepared AT ALL. The first few chapters Fire Punch presents a cruel, unforgiving and cold world where anything bad can, and will happen to you and your loved ones. The world is twisted out of itself and is showing the worst side of humanity, while clinging on to the empty salvation of a hollow god who doesn't listen to his children's cries. "The man on fire in a frozen world" narrative could've been so different in so many ways, and I like how Fire Punch surprised me with this stomach-churning story, a tale about enduring life itself, how to live for the sake of living, for the sake of a wish, for the sake of love. What makes us human? What makes a person who they are? When is the point of no return? When do you lose yourself completely? How far can you stray from what you believe is right? How long can you keep being someone you're not? Fujimoto absolutely does not spare the reader in this, the story stomps on the neck of hope, only to reveal a bigger picture where none of this matters. I cannot recommend this to everyone, however if you like reading stuff that feels like touching hot metal, I encourage you to read it with every trigger warning imaginable. I couldn't put it down! Also among the charred, bloody suffering and rivers of tears there are moments that made me laugh, and we get the absurdity and sudden bursts of idiocy that comes with reading Fujimoto.
