Flowers of Mythology - Lotus
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There are six different plant taxa that are known as lotus, of which only two have mythological connections. The largest genus is Nymphaea, which contains 65 species. They are commonly known as water lilies as they grow in water with their leaves mostly floating on the surface and their flowers mostly blooming above the water, rarely below it. They grow in fresh or brackish water and are pollinated by scarab beetles. They can become invasive when introduced places outside their normal habitat, but there are also several species that are endangered, as well. Their leaves have a notch in them where the leaf joins the stem. They are poisonous, but are sometimes used as a famine food after being cooked thoroughly to destroy the poison.

Among the Ancient Egyptians, the lotus' growth from the mud at the bottom of the Nile to bloom at the top of the water symbolized the the sun's rising from the primeval slime. This metaphor of creation also linked the lotus to fertility deities and to the upper Nile, the source of life for the Egyptians. The lotus was also frequently used in their architecture, especially temple columns.

Nelumbo is a distantly related genus of lotus Today, there are only two species in this group, though there are dozens of species going back to the Early Cretaceous. Of the two, the Nelumbo nucifera, also known as the sacred lotus, is native to East, South, and Southeast Asia and likely Australia. The other is Nelumbo lutea, also known as the American Lotus, is native to North America and the Caribbean. Both species have leaves that have a dense layer of waxy papilla, a hairlike structure, that make them ultrahydrophobic, which means water beads up on the surface of the leaf and rolls easily off it. They also are able to generate heat in themselves, likely to regulate their life cycle or to attract pollinators to have them mate on the flower, which improves the likelihood of successful pollination. Their leaves are circular, with the stem joined to the center of it. These lotus can be eaten raw or cooked and used to make 'lotus silk'.

The sacred lotus is widely used as an offering in Hindu temples, especially to Lakshmi, goddess of wealth, beauty, fertility, royal power, and more, Vishnu, god of preservation, time, karma, and more, and Shiva, god of destruction, time, and more. They are also used as offerings in Buddhist temples. The seeds are used as prayer beads. Because the sacred lotus seeds are viable for a long time, the record being 1300 years, they are viewed as representing longevity by the Chinese.

Hii may I request two separate name checks with the names 'Vita' and 'Nelumbo', both with it/he pronouns? Thank you!
<2
Sure thing!
Vita
Wait a second, is that Vita? I think I see Vita over there! Do you see it? It’s the one sitting by itself with its headphones on. I wonder what it’s listening to? Anyway, you’ve met Vita before, right? No? Well, you’ll have to meet it sometime; I think you’d get along nicely with it. I’ve only spoken with it once or twice, but it seems pretty neat. He didn’t say much about himself, though. You don’t see him? He’s the one sitting by himself in the red chair. Yup, that’s Vita! Oh, hey! He’s looking this way now! I think he’s waving at us? Yeah, he’s definitely waving at us. Do you want to go meet Vita? Sure, let’s go say hi to him! Hey! Vita!

Nelumbo nucifera.
The Sacred Lotus is wonderful in a pond where the summer is warm enough. One can judge the appropriate temperature from the gardeners clothing. This one is quite hot enough.

One of my lotus seeds is growing a little faster than the others, it's 12h between the pictures. I need to find a container and plant it in some clay. I didn't think I needed to do this so early. I mean, it's months before I can take it outside.

Did you know North America has a native lotus? Nelumbo lutea or yellow lotus is one of only two wild lotus species left on the planet. This prehistoric giant produces the largest flower in North America - the size of your head! The leaves average two feet across. It grows from the Great Lakes down to Central America and the Caribbean. It is edible, medicinal, mildly poisonous, and mildly psychoactive. Many Native American tribes believed it had mystical powers.
