Meet Nellie O’Malley!

Nellie Deirdre O’Malley was born on October 15th. Her year is 1906 and she is incidentally modern. She lives in Mount Bedford, New York, with her adoptive father Gardner, her adoptive mother Cornelia, her sisters Jenny and Bridget, and her adopted sister Samantha. She likes fixing things, playing with her doll, and studying handwriting. When she grows up, Nellie wants to be a teacher for newly arrived immigrants.

My keepers. I still have a lot, but the collection is certainly less overwhelming. Annika (center front, in the light blue shirt) is the doll I’ve had the longest, and Indi (second row, white shirt, dark complexion) is my newest. Many others have come and gone, but these are the ones that spark the most joy when I see them.

Most of them are historicals, but for this photo I decided to dress everyone in relatively contemporary clothing (1990s-2020s), just to see how they all would look.

Miss Crampton announced that the Mount Bedford Ladies Club would be sponsoring their annual Young People’s Speaking Contest in October. Students from each school in the town would be selected to speak, including two from Miss Crampton’s. The theme this year was “Progress in America,” so speeches could be about any modern device or industry that the students could think of.

The contest became the topic of conversation at lunchtime. The girls all thought that Samantha had a decent chance, and she certainly thought it would be nice to win. But, as Ruth pointed out, Edith Eddleton would be fierce competition. She knew a lot of big words and she wasn’t afraid of anything. Ruth was a good friend, though an honest one. Helen told her to be quiet and eat her sandwich.

When Samantha met the O’Malleys outside of the Public School, she was pleased that Nellie looked happier. The students hadn’t teased her as much and the teacher had mostly left her alone. Just then, Edith pedaled by on her bicycle. She went on about Samantha spending time with servants, and how her mother would never allow such a thing.
