Corpse Bride x TBOSAS AU
Thanks @headcavedin for helping and letting me bounce ideas off of them
Note: We’re playing fast and loose with age. Yes, the mentors should be the same age, but here we’re ignoring that. So Coriolanus, Clemensia and Felix are around the same age. (think mid 30-40s provided that they are alive, early 20s if dead.) Sejanus and Lysistrata are younger. (early twenties).
Roles:
Most of the mentors and those from the Capitol take on the role of those in the world of the living. Everything is pretty drab and rule-following up here. Meanwhile, most of the dead are tributes and some of the Districts with the vibrancy.
THE LIVING:
Plinths - Van Dorts
New money, merchants in the town who’re looking to establish themselves with the old money families
Sejanus gets the role of Victor - the groom. No piano skills for him though. He and Lyssie can bond over medicine, maybe?
Swapping the role of the parents because I think Strabo fits better with Nell, the mother, since he wants to integrate a lot more into society, while Ma Plinth and William seem to have more similar personalities. Not as obsessed with getting into high society as their spouse.
Vickers - Everglots
Why are they broke? Well…Felix is dead in this AU and because the Vickers couldn’t save him, Max dismisses them from his employ. Of course, it’s phrased a lot more politely, but the sentiment remains.
Lysistrata as Victoria Everglot - the human bride
Nobody else knows of the family’s dire fortunes but the family.
Coriolanus - Lord Barkis Bittern
Currently broke, although this isn’t public knowledge. But has a title and is well-respected in town.
Almost married quite some years ago, but some sort of tragedy befell her before they could marry.
Looking to marry Lysistrata for her family’s fortune. Now if only he could get rid of the fiance…
Volumnia Gaul - Pastor Galswell. You thought her being the obstetrician was freaky in TBOSAS? Well, in this one, she’s officiating all the marriages in this town. Hope you don’t mind~
Androcles Anderson - Town Crier. Dedicated man who reports news across town.
THE DEAD:
Clemensia - Emily or the Corpse Bride
Fell in love with a young aristocrat and decided to elope, only to be left in the woods to die.
Not very nice to call someone the Corpse Bride (even if it’s true) - Reaper, probably at one point.
Pianist!
Rumour has it that the Dovecotes left town when their silly daughter ran off to elope, taking with her, her mother’s wedding gown and jewels. They were determined to find her, alas… they would never come to know of her fate.
Marcus as Mayhew - the carriage driver for the Plinths. Dies from his cough, and finds Sejanus.
Cyrus - Elder Gutknecht. Considered the wisest amongst the dead and has magical knowledge. Able to grant Clemmie and Sejanus temporary access to the land of the living. He’s got Boa Bell #1 in this AU. Boa Bell #2 is alive but with Pluribus on the surface of the living.
Lucy Gray & the Covey - Bonejangles and his skeleton band crew! Got the best tunes, even if they're singing about how Clemmie ended up down here. (highly recommend listening to remains of the day!)
Felix and Lamina - the spider and the maggot - except in this AU they’re both skeletons. Supportive of Clemmie’s marriage!! Felix and Clemmie moved in the same circles while living. Piece of advice, don't mention the blond aristocrat in his hearing. It's a touchy subject for both him and Clemmie.
Reaper - no specific character he’s based on, but he’s amongst the dead and is sort of in between how Felix & Lamina act vs Bobbin & Tanner act around Clemmie. Willing to speak the truth even if it’s harsh, but a lot kinder in how he words things.
~~~~
Plot:
When practicing his wedding vows after his disaster of a wedding rehearsal, Sejanus unknowingly proposes to Clemensia, who rises from her grave to joyfully accept.
Once he’s brought down in the land of the dead, he’s freaked out. Clemmie, unfortunately, is highly oblivious and is enamoured with her husband. Or more so, the idea of finally being married.
Some of the dead are supportive, yes. Others… not so much. (No names or anything, Bobbin and Tanner)
Follows most of the movie’s plot. Sejanus attempts to go back to the land of the living, tricking Clemensia into finding a way so that they can meet his parents. This plan fails spectacularly when she catches on and realizes she's been duped.
A little bit of a - "Who are you?" / "I’m his wife. Who are you?" Between Clemmie and Lyssie while Sejanus is just standing there nervously.
The jig is up, and Clemmie brings them back to the land of the dead
Sejanus, technically married to Clemensia: Don’t you see, you’re the other woman! Clemensia: No, she’s the other woman. You’re married to me!
They do eventually reconcile.
Around this time, he learns from Marcus (recently dead) that Lysistrata is now going to be married to Coriolanus as the rest of the town thinks he ran off to marry Clemensia.
Meanwhile we get Cyrus, Clemensia, Felix and Reaper learning that Clemmie’s marriage isn’t valid since wedding vows are ‘death till us part’ and well, she’s dead.
Felix is a ride-or-die friend. Reaper is a little concerned.
Felix: Do you want me to fix that? (talking about killing Sejanus) Clemensia: Reaper: Clem, you’re not seriously considering that, are you? He’s–
Clemensia refuses Felix’s request at the same time Sejanus says that he’s willing to properly marry her. (ie. die)
Back on the surface:
Coriolanus & Lysistrata’s wedding dinner interrupted by the dead who’ve come to the surface to hold a proper wedding for Clemmie and Sejanus
Chaos.
Cyrus finds Pluribus and despite being a skeleton, Pluribus recognizes him and they share a smooch. The Boa Bells also meet each other.
While freaked out, the living do recognize some of the dead and for some, it’s a happy reunion. Others…not so much. (Mizzen + Wovey are doing it for fun. Coral is here with a vengeance. Bobbin too.)
And although Sejanus is willing to marry her, upon seeing Lysistrata in the shadows, Clemensia frees him from said promise.
This quote from the movie: “I was a bride once. My dreams were taken from. But now – now I’ve stolen them from someone else. I love you, Victor, but you are not mine.” Clemmie to Sejanus.
Some more chaos when Coriolanus interrupts the wedding, wanting his wife back.
Confronation between Clemmie and Coriolanus. "You." / "You?" Very dramatic for most people when they realize he's the one who left her for dead.
Slight fight between Coriolanus and Sejanus with Clemensia stepping in to take the injury for Sejanus.
This scene!! Where Clemmie pulls the sword out to point at Coriolanus (I've seen theories saying that this is where Emily was originally stabbed by Barkis, and I'm here for it!)
Tumblr media
Following the same ending as the movie:
At an impasse, Coriolanus plans to leave when he foolishly drinks the wine meant for the ceremony, not knowing it’s poison, killing him and freeing Lyssie from her marriage vows.
Some of the dead may have thought Clemmie naive/foolish with her dream of waiting all those years to be married, but they all have a soft spot for their corpse bride. Now that they know she was killed off by Coriolanus… well “New Arrival~” and he gets dragged off to the land of the dead.
And having found her peace Clemmie gets to move on.
The Corpse Groom (Corpse Bride recast)
Tumblr media
original meme belongs to Blaze-On-Fire. I've learned some disappointing things about Tim Burtan. But my sister tells me it's still okay to like his movie since he's not really the creative mind behind them. So with that in mind, I give you my polyamorous retelling of The Corpse Bride with characters from the Dreamworks Trolls franchise (inspired by the Tangled/Corpse Bride crossover "Live For You" on AO3) starring... Hickory in the role of Victor Van Dort. Princess Poppy in the role of Victoria Everglot. Delta Dawn in the role of Nell (she's Hickorys' sister-in-law) Cybil in the role of Maudeline (until the third movie comes out, I'm casting her as Poppy's mother) King Peppy in the role of Finis. Dickory in the role of William (Hickorys' brother, Delta's husband) Branch in the of Emily (why is the title character so far down? this is not a well-designed meme) Creek in the role of Lord Barkus. DJ Suki in the role of Hildagard (she's Poppys' lady in waiting) King Gristle Senior in the role of Pastor Galswells. Biggie in the role of Mayhew (Don't worry, he's not going to die) Grandma Rosie Puff in the role of Grandfather Everglot (she's Poppys' ancestor in this story)   King Thrash in the role of Elder Gutknecht. He and the other Rock Trolls are psychopomps (death angels) who watch over Troll souls in Purgatory. Riff in the role of the Black Widow. Chaz in the role of the flirtatious Miss Plum. Barb in the role of the Maggot (I thought about casting her as Bonejangles, but she's more like the sassy Maggot)   Conductor Trollzart in the role of the General (I wanted to us the Country Troll who SPOILER: dies onscreen, but I couldn't find any picture of him) King Trollex in the role of Bonejangles (specializing in Horrorcore Techno) And Fuzzbert in the role of Emil.
The story is this... Princess Poppy is betrothed to Lord Creek. But she's in love with the handsome trans man Hickory Dock. They decide to elope, and while passing through the woods, they practice their wedding vows, accidently summoning Brance, a corpse who's still holding his last breath. He approaches his "beloveds" who explain that they're already an item. He tells them that he's "willing to share". He then sprits them away to Purgatory, where the dead spend their time before they're ready to move on. They're greeted by the Barb the psychopomp who shows them around, and Trollex who sings about the tragic Corpse Groom that was betrayed and murdered by his lover. The trio has a good time together, until Hickory remembers his family is still waiting for him. They go to Thrash, who gives them a haunting spell that sends them to the world of the living. They go (with Branch in disguise) to the home of Hickory's brother and in-laws. The next day, they sneak into the castle, where they overhear Creek blackmailing King Peppy for Poppys' hand. Poppy chooses to stay and help her father, while Branch and Hickory escape back to Purgatory. Poppy and Suki do some investigating and discover that Creek stole a royal family relic ~ a harp said to restore life to the freshly dead. (wink wink) Meanwhile, Branch is distraught, but Hickory comforts him with a romantic ballad. Right when they're ready to start again, Thrash reveals that the dead and the living are forbidden to marry. If they want to be a couple Hickory will have to go back to the world of the living and take his own life. Hickory agrees, and the whole dead community goes up to perform the wedding. Poppy sees the procession and joins them, thinking that her death will make her wedding to Creek null and void. But during the ceremony, Branch sees Poppy and Hickorys' families watching and can't go through with it. Poppy tries to tell him about the harp, but Creek interrupts. Branch recognizes his murderer, and a fight breaks out. Creek escapes but trips and impales himself on a thorn. And before he can use the harp on himself, he's dragged off to face judgement. Poppy and Hickory use the harp to restore Branch to life, and then destroy it. A new life is waiting for all three of them.
Corpse Bride Headcannons, Theories, and Ideas
This is just a list of the theories, headcannons, and ideas I came up with for Tim Burton's Corpse Bride. I might add more later on, so watch out
-Victor and Victoria were born and raised in a small English village close to the Atlantic Ocean called Burtonsville
-Victor’s full name is Victor Ichabod Van Dort
-When he was about four years old, Victor found Scraps as a mixed-breed puppy in an alleyway. Nell and William refused at first, but William saw how his son quickly became attached to the dog, so he let him stay. Sadly, when Victor turned eight, Scraps was brutally mauled and tragically killed while trying to defend his beloved owner from a bigger, nastier dog
-Victor’s favorite toy as a child was a stuffed horse he called Usher. He begged his mother to let him keep Usher until he was fourteen
-Victor learned to play the piano when he was about five years old. He was a fast learner and he picked up on it very quickly, and his tutor was greatly impressed by his skill. His favorite musicians are Mozart and Beethoven
-Victor works as an artist to draw many types of butterflies for the Lepidoptera Community, as well as a professional pianist. Originally, his father wanted him to work as a fish merchant and take over the family business, but Victor politely told him “no thanks” because he wanted to follow his own dreams. William was disappointed, but deep down he wanted his son to be happy. So he usually encouraged him, especially when Nell wasn’t around
-Outside from his butterfly works, Victor does paintings during his free time at home. The color theory that he studied was written by Eugene De La Croix·         Victor has been drawing since he was a child. His favorite things to draw are animals, butterflies, and other insects. He also does landscapes and people sometimes. He also likes to write sometimes, mostly a few poems and a couple musical compositions. Nothing he took too seriously, though. He also likes to sing when he thinks he’s alone
-In his childhood, Victor used to have a somewhat regular playmate named Humphrey. They were almost friends, but when William’s business became very successful and Victor’s family became rich when Victor was about eleven, Humphrey stopped coming over and the two boys haven’t seen each other since
-When he was a boy, he learned how to speak French because his mother thought it was high-class” to be bilingual. Victor was diligent in his studies and thus has a good knowledge of spoken and written French. He may not be perfectly fluent, but he can carry on a decent conversation
-Victor is severely allergic to walnuts and poison oak
-Victor had a cousin named Mary whom he was very fond of, but she passed away when she was seventeen and he was six. She got lost in the woods and was attacked and devoured by a pack of wolves
-Victor doesn’t drink anything more than the occasional glass of champagne or wine. The reason? Mayhew once got him drunk and it turns out Victor is a CHATTY drunk. As in, he’ll tell you his life story at the slightest provocation. Victor was so embarrassed when he sobered up that he nearly swore off all alcohol forever. It’s very unlikely he’ll ever knowingly get wasted again·         After he and Victoria were finally married, Victor gained confidence and he stood up against Victoria's parents earning him some respect
-Victor HATES smoking. He was secretly offered a cigarette from Mayhew when he was fourteen and after the first inhale, he was coughing and gagging so much that he nearly threw up
-Victor is the tallest member of the Van Dort family, making him stand out quite a bit during family reunions
-He may not be a sporty person, but Victor enjoys cycling. He also loves a good game of chess
-Victor adores reading. His favorite writers are William Blake, Charles Baudelaire, Lewis Carroll, Edgar Allan Poe, and William Shakespeare
His favorite books are “Les Miserables”, “Dracula”, “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland”, “The Fall of the House of Usher” and other works by E.A. Poe. The play/book that he hates the most is “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” because he strongly dislikes this style of a love triangle in the plot line. He also has a fascination with penny dreadful. Yes, he knows the serial stories are really nothing but lowest common denominator trash, but he loves them anyway. He got hooked on them as a teenager thanks to Mayhew’s nephew, and he used to keep a secret stash under his mattress
-When she still rather young, Victor noticed that his daughter, Emily, became very interested in music, so he taught her how to play the piano as well as the violin
-Victoria was the one who taught her son, Edward, how to read and they bond over books and stories they both enjoy
-The worst day of Victor’s life happened about three weeks after Scraps died. Victor’s parents had some business friends over for tea, and forced a still-grieving Victor to come down and be social. Poor Victor made a bad impression, being quieter and clumsier than normal, culminating in knocking over one man, tripping his wife, and insulting said wife’s coat in apologizing. Nell, humiliated and enraged, turned on her son once the guests were off, screaming at him about what an embarrassment he was while they were still standing on the front steps. Victor was so horrified, embarrassed, and depressed that he came too close to taking his own life. He got his hands on his father’s straight-razor, snuck into the bathroom, and actually had it to his neck when a noise from outside the bathroom spooked him and he dropped the razor and ran back to his room as fast as he could. Fortunately, the distraction gave him time to realize suicide wouldn’t fix anything, and he made a promise to himself never to stoop that low again. His parents also apologized the next day, which helped a lot. Victor avoids telling anyone about it unless he feels he has to, certain they’ll think less of him for it
-Victor was born June 9th, 1867
-Victoria’s full name is Victoria Elizabeth Everglot
-When she was very little, Victoria had always wanted a pet (like a cat or a small dog) but her mother said that having a pet in the house was uncivilized and improper and that all animals were filthy and uncouth creatures
-Victoria’s favorite hobby is sewing and knitting. She often designs most of her husband’s clothes and others in her spare time
-As a child, Victoria tried to be closer to her parents, but often found the family maid Hildegarde as more of a mother figure
-Victoria loves to read in her spare time… even though most people call it scandalous for a woman to do such a thing. Her mother even said reading was too passionate for a young lady. At a young age, Hildegarde, taught Victoria how to read (something her parents never found out about)
-Her favorite books are “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland”, “A Christmas Carol”, and any classic fairy tale. And her favorite writers are Charles Dickens, Lewis Carroll, Charles Perrault, Hans Christian Andersen, and the Brothers Grimm
-Victoria’s favorite toy as a child was a china doll she called Miss Liddie. By the time she was about eleven, she had grown out of it. Even though she knows she’s too old for toys now, she still misses Miss Liddie
-Victoria isn’t allergic to anything, but she does tend to sneeze if dust is in the air
-When she was a little girl, Victoria was nearly trampled by a horse-drawn carriage, which made her develop a slight fear of horses
-Victoria likes to sing whenever she thinks she’s alone. She doesn’t believe it, but she has a surprisingly lovely singing voice
-When she was a little girl, Victoria was entranced by the piano in her house and she immediately wanted to learn how to play but her mother had told her daughter many times that music was improper and too passionate for a young lady. But Victor always tells his wife that music is a wonderful way to express oneself and that he would be more than happy to teach her how to play
-Victoria used to have a regular playmate named Gwyneth in her girlhood. They were good friends, but when Victoria reached her pre-teen years, Gwyneth stopped coming over to play for some reason and she never heard from her since
-Victoria is the most beautiful member of the Everglot family
-When she was in her early teens, Victoria secretly dreamed of becoming a writer someday
-Victoria was born February 3rd, 1868
-Victor and Victoria had two children. Their names are Emily Alice Van Dort (age 15) and Edward Daniel Van Dort (age 10)
-When Victor and Victoria were married, they moved out of their parents houses and bought a beautiful two story house that sat at the edge of a large meadow that was right next to the forest… plus, the house was a good mile or so away from Burtonsville
-The Corpse Bride’s full name is Emily Charlotte Cartwell
-Emily was born into a wealthy family. Her parents, Lord and Lady Cartwell, couldn’t say ‘no’ to their daughter and they practically gave her everything she asked for, so she became incredibly spoiled, selfish, and incredibly naïve·         Emily was a hopeless romantic, often spending time reading romance novels and daydreaming about her wedding when she was alive
-When she was alive, Emily was blonde
-When she made it to Heaven, Emily was finally reunited with her mother and father
-When their daughter disappeared, Lord and Lady Cartwell were so sad and depressed that they wasted away and passed away in their sleep
-Before ascending, Emily considered Bonejangles to be one of her best friends. They used to sing and dance together all the time. He even taught her how to play the piano
-When she was alive, Emily knew how to ride horses. She even had a pet white mare she called Aphrodite
-Emily Cartwell died at age eighteen
-Lord Barkis’s full name is Barkis Finbar Campbell Bittern
-Emily met Lord Barkis while she was on an outing with her parents. Her parents had their backs turned while Emily was talking with Barkis. After only a few minutes of talking, she was instantly smitten with him and she accepted his immediate proposal of marriage… and her mother and father were not happy about it at all. Emily and her father had a huge fight and she decided to elope with Barkis… but for her, it didn’t go as planned
-Barkis told her that if they were going to be together, they would need money. Emily wasn’t sure, but in the end, she agreed
-On the night she was running away, Emily stole not only her mother’s wedding dress, veil, gloves, and best shoes, but she also stole the jewels from her mother’s jewelry box and a large bag of gold from her father’s office
-As Emily was waiting for her fiancé that night, Barkis snuck up behind her, stabbed her, knocked her out cold, took all of her money and jewels, and buried her alive. She woke up in a shallow grave and tried to claw her way out before suffocating to death. That's why her hand was sticking out of the ground
-Barkis was married six times in his life. He and his first wife were married out of love until he found her cheating on him and killed her. The second was an elderly widow for her money. The third one got away before he could even hurt her, but she drowned herself in a deep, rushing river. The fourth was a drunken lonely woman who “accidentally” fell out of a two story window. The fifth being Emily and the sixth being Victoria
-In the Land of The Dead, Barkis was brutally beaten and ripped apart before he was imprisoned in an iron coffin chained seven feet underground with other criminals like him for all eternity
-After he ran away, Barkis studied linguistics in French, Latin, German, and Russian in order to impress others… or use different fake accents to fool them with
-Barkis’s original first name was Bradford and he had a rough upbringing. His father was a violent alcoholic and his mother was a reckless prostitute and they both abused Bradford as a child until he ran away from home at age sixteen and changed his name to Lord Barkis
-Barkis has a twin sister who had a son named Hector. Hector greatly looked up to his uncle and when he heard about what happened to Barkis, he was taken aback, but he also felt he could use that to his advantage. When he turned 30, Hector came to Burtonsville to exact revenge on the Van Dort family… but he also developed a vile infatuation with Emily. Whenever he tries to woo the young girl (which always fails since Emily finds him repulsive and cruel), Victor gladly steps in the way every time and he always sternly tells Hector to stay away from his daughter
-Mrs. Van Dort’s full name is Eleanor Minerva Fitzackley Van Dort
-Nell came from a lower class family. She lived with her father, mother, and three sisters. However, Nell wasn’t happy with her place in society and she wanted to became something more
-Nell and William first met when she was caught in the rain one stormy day and he offered her a ride home in his fish merchant carriage. She declined at first, but quickly gave in when it started to bucket down. As they rode together, they started chatting and soon became very interested in one another
-Nell and William made their way back to the village just in time to witness Emily's soul disappear into the night as a swarm of blue butterflies
-When she learned about Mayhew’s death, Nell quietly wept in her room about it. She might be overbearing, but deep down, she truly does care for the ones closest to her. She also adores her husband and son, even if she does find them a bit irritating. She just has a hard time showing her emotions
-Mr. Van Dort’s full name is William Oscar Van Dort
-William loves talk about fish and his business, he always tries to weasel in the topic whenever possible to his wife and son's annoyance
-William used to take Victor on fishing trips when he was younger, which practically bored Victor to death
-While he tends to be the more passive one in their relationship, William does put his foot down when the situation calls for it
-It may not seem like it, but William adores Victor and he tries to do whatever he can to be there for his son
-When Victor turned sixteen, William gave him a silver pocket watch with a design of a fish on the front and his initials
-Lady Everglot’s full name is Maudeline Hortense Glottberg Everglot
-Maudeline and Finis didn’t plan on having a child in the first place and Victoria came as more of a surprise
-Maudeline had a sister named Marie who loved playing the piano. They didn’t get along in their youth and they drifted apart as they grew up. Maudeline wasn’t even invited to Marie’s wedding to Lord Frederick Cartwell
-When Marie died, she left her piano to her sister, but Maudeline never touched it. She felt it brought back too many memories and forbade Victoria from going near it was well
-Lord Eveglot’s full name is Finis Augustus Everglot
-While he was disappointed in not having a son, Finis deeply cares for his daughter. He just doesn’t know how to show it
-Even though they’re not good at sharing their feelings, Maudeline and Finis do care for each other to some extent
-Hildegarde has lots of grandchildren and she visited their home in the countryside as often as she could before she passed away
-When he was alive, Bonejangles was a freelance jazz musician from America and his original name was Dexter. He was finishing a gig in England when he died in a horrible carriage accident (he was run over), which also caused him to lose his eyeball
-General Bonesapart and General Wellington were actually General Napoleon Bonaparte and English General Wellington, two real historical figures. However, even though they hated each other at first, they became real pals eventually
-Although they don't say it out loud, people in Burtonsville make fun of Maudeline's hair cut, calling her names like "Rump Head" or "Hairmungus"
-Elder Gutknecht is one of the many Afterlife Lords, responsible for managing the dead after they pass. Among them include God, the Devil, King Vince, Hades, Hel, Osiris, Odin, Freya, and, the Hindu God Yama
-The Underworld is actually thousands of miles underground and due to the magic surrounding it. Mortals can't access it unless they die themselves
-After his death, Mayhew kicked the habit of smoking altogether and is very glad he did
-Elder Gutknecht has a fearsome Hellhound by the name of Infernius, his fierce and ever loyal pet. He guards the entrance to the Land of the Dead and can breathe fire that heats up to 900 degrees
-The fellow who was cut cleanly in half was an English gentleman by the name of Herman, who lived in Burtonsville years before. He ended up meeting his death due to an accident involving a rather large guillotine
-Generals Bonesapart and Wellington are the leaders of army of the Land of the Dead, but are only called into combat in times of great peril
-The people of Burtonsville sometimes call Lord Everglot “Everglut” behind his back
-Victoria has a cousin by the name of Dolores. Dolores is something of a freeloading con artist who moved to America when she left home. She considers herself a very attractive woman, but she just wears too much makeup and rather revealing clothes and is actually rather sleazy in reality. She also smokes, which Victoria and the rest of the Everglots are strongly against
-When he was alive, Elder Gutknecht used to be a wise sage that helped people in their time of need. He passed away when he reached the age of 102
-The Everglots were a family of nobles with a significant amount of money, but due to a bit of excessive gambling (by Dolores), they lost almost everything
-Almost every member of the Everglot family is rather ugly due to bad genetics. Victoria considers herself very, VERY lucky to have not inherited such genes (she unknowingly received her natural beauty from her late Aunt Marie)
-Pastor Galswells was raised in a strict environment. He was taught that kindness was weakness and to be stern and firm with everyone. He passed away shortly after the official wedding of Victor and Victoria and a new pastor took his place. His name is Pastor Ivan Blackthorp and he’s much kinder and friendlier than Galswells ever was
-The reason Victor named his dog Scraps was because he only ate table scraps
-The people of Burtonsville have a secret inside joke about the squatty walk Finis Everglot does where they assume that he would jump like a toad and snatch up a fly at any moment
-Burtonsville is well known for its raven population and there's an old legend saying they're messengers to the Land of the Dead
-For some weird reason, William Van Dort is known to mutter the words "Fishy, fishy, fish" in his sleep and it honestly creeps Nell out
-Paul, the decapitated head waiter, was actually a French man who served Marie Antoinette during her reign. Unfortunately, he was unjustly executed by association with the queen when the French Revolution broke out and he was never able to find his body after he died
-Several people have assumed Maudeline's hair is an actual wig and she's bald under it… only to be mistaken, resulting in a whooping
-Lord Barkis was a master of disguise in life and was never caught by the police as a result
-The Underworld has a prison known as the Iron Tomb and it holds some pretty infamous inmates who include Bluebeard, Caligula, Henry VIII, Mary I of England, and many more
-The Town of Burtonsville was actually built on an ancient burial ground, which is possibly why the Land of the Dead is connected to it
-After her death, Emily was made the official guardian angel of the Van Dort family
This is all I've got so far, but feel free to tell me what you think and tell me which one is your favorite
AU Thursday: Fallout Of Darkness -- A Half-Decent Sum-Up Of The Pre-War Timeline
If you follow my RP tumblr, @thevalicemultiverse, you may have seen this before (barring a few edits I made just now) -- I wrote this up as background for putting Fallout of Darkness into play over there as an RP verse. It’s as good a write-up as I currently have for Alice and particularly Victor’s lives before the bombs fell, so might as well bring it over here for more general consumption! Enjoy!
---
Alice Liddell shares most of her backstory with her Londerland Bloodlines counterpart: she’s born in 1984, loses her family to Bumby’s obsession with her sister, hallucinates her way through the horrors of Rutledge and Houndsditch with Wonderland serving as a horrific psychological dreamscape for her to get her sanity back under her, realizes Bumby’s behind all her pain and is a child trafficker, kills him, moves to Los Angeles for a fresh start, and gets illegally Embraced by Malkavian Fish and ends up errand girl to Prince Sebastian LaCroix. In this reality, though, she lives through something much closer to the standard Bloodlines plot (albeit filtered through the “all tech is at least kinda 50s sci-fi” lens of Fallout) – including saving Heather Poe instead of Victor, and finding nothing in the Giovanni basement except regular old zombies. She pushes through all the bullshit of Camarilla vs Anarchs vs Kuei-Jin vs Sabbat, convinces Heather to leave when it transpires she’s being really badly affected by Alice’s Malkavian blood (to the point of luring a guy to the haven and then locking him in the bathroom for Alice to eat), and eventually chooses the independent life, killing Ming-Xiao, letting LaCroix blow up with his tower, and flipping off the Anarchs when they try to recruit her. She flees Los Angeles completely shortly thereafter, and spends most of the rest of the next seventy-odd years on the move around America, avoiding possible reprisals from the Camarilla and watching the world go to hell in a handbasket with resources running out and the war for the last great oil pipeline. She finds shelter in Boston in October 2077, and is sleeping away the day in a presumed-safe building when the bombs drop. While she’s luckily buried in a sunlight-blocking pile of rubble, she’s also staked by a falling beam. . .and remains so for the next two centuries. . .
Victor Van Dort, on the other hand, is born in 2050, to Nell and William Van Dort of Burtonsville. William is in the fish business, and moves his family to the USA when Victor is still just a baby to seek new opportunities. What he and his wife and son get is the New Plague, forcing them to stay in Massachusetts due to quarantine measures. Despite this, William still manages to become a fish cannery mogul, making millions off his automated factories. Victor himself grows up almost entirely confined to the house and gardens, cared for and taught by a variety of robots until he was fourteen and it was deemed safe enough for him to attend a normal high school. The gardens taught him to love nature, but his caretakers taught him to love science and technology – while still a hobbyist lepidopterist, Victor is much more a tinkerer and technician in this world. Having to help fix the family’s Protectron driver, Mayhew, when he falls apart almost right in front of you will do that to a boy! He’s just more comfortable with machines than people – a fact that doesn’t make him popular in school.
In his senior year of high school, Victor is pushed to date Victoria Everglot by his parents, seeing her family’s noble history (some relative way-back-when in England was a Grand Duke) as a good way to improve their own social standings. Victor goes along with it after realizing he likes Victoria herself a fair bit, and the two soon become boyfriend and girlfriend. A few months into the relationship, though, Victor comes across a gravely-injured Emily Merrimack-Cartwell in the park, the victim of an elopement that turned out to be an excuse to rob and murder her. Victor is able to rush her to the hospital in time, and the two become friends in the aftermath. Victoria, noticing that they seem to have a growing attraction, decides she doesn’t want Victor to feel obligated to continue dating her if he’d prefer to be with Emily and actually encourages them to go to prom together. They agree after confirming she’s okay with that, and that she won’t be missing out herself. They start out having a good time together, but midway through Victoria goes to the ladies’ room and doesn’t return. Victor and Emily, concerned, go looking for her and find her being menaced by none other than Emily’s ex Barkis – apparently not satisfied with what he got off Emily, he’s now trying to rob and possibly kidnap Victoria. Victor and Emily take him down and get him carted off to jail, to Victoria’s eternal gratitude. The experience bind them all together as a trio, and – coupled with the discovery that Victoria and Emily feel much the same about each other as they do about Victor – they decide to just all date each other and see where the chips fall.
And then the draft comes and Victor is yanked into military service. He ends up a combat engineer in the Engineer Corps, and is assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 108th Infantry Regiment, aka “Fox Company.” While he makes some friends in fellow soldiers Nate Howard and Sam “Bonejangles” Thatcher, Victor loathes his experiences as a soldier, especially as his unit is protecting the Alaskan Pipeline on the Alaska border and watching as the US annexes Canada. Things come to a head when his commanding officer tries to get him to shoot two Canadian kids who were throwing rocks at their camp – an enraged Victor shoots the officer instead, then gets wrapped up in a sudden enemy attack on said camp (a small company of Chinese infiltrators in stealth suits -- one accidentally decloaked in his surprise over Victor killing his target), spiriting the kids to safety before managing to save the rest of his company via fast fixing of their defenses and rigging up some explosive power armor. The chaos makes it impossible for the upper brass to know for sure Victor killed the officer (though they’re deeply suspicious), and the fact that everyone else is calling him a hero (plus his father being willing to pay good money for his son’s safe return) leads to him going home for good. Having married Victoria while on leave earlier, they take in Emily as a “live-in friend and help around the house” (wink wink), and the three move to the little community of Sanctuary Hills. They have a good couple of years there, culminating in the birth of Victor and Victoria’s son Shaun. Victor, despite his worries about the resource shortages, the war with China, and his own government possibly looking for a way to silence him whenever he makes his opinions about same known, starts thinking that maybe things can be all right for him and his family at least. . .
And then, on October 23rd, 2077, the bombs hit. Victor and his family get to Vault 111 just in time, and are processed and cyronically frozen as per the experiment. However, things go bad with a security staff revolt, and the frozen family is left easy pickings for some mysterious scientists to come in, shoot Victoria, and kidnap Shaun right before Victor’s horrified eyes. When he is revived again, he finds that the life support failed for the rest of the residents (including Emily, whose pod partially thawed her and left her half-rotted), leaving him the sole survivor – apart from his missing son. He escapes the vault and returns to what’s left of Sanctuary Hills, vowing to find Shaun.
Finding Shaun turns out to be more difficult than imagined – the world above is a dangerous place, and Victor is ill-prepared to deal with it. Fortunately, he makes some friends right off the bat – his old Mr. Handy Codsworth; a German Shepherd waiting for him at the local Red Rocket, who is later revealed to be named Dogmeat; and Preston Garvey, last of the Commonwealth Minutemen, whom Victor saves from raiders at the Museum of Freedom in Concord while looking for other signs of life. Victor welcomes Preston and his settlers to live in Sanctuary, and joins up with Preston’s efforts to revive the Minutemen and make it a force for good in the wasteland (being named General by Preston in the process, a move that baffles him and his 2 Charisma). Helping settlers leads him down to Diamond City, where he was told by slightly-psychic Mama Murphy he could find some help. He befriends reporter Piper Wright there, and ends up getting her help to find her missing friend detective Nick Valentine when it transpires he – and with him, Victor’s best hope for finding Shaun – has vanished.
And during their adventures to track down Nick’s precise location, they come across a raider base, are attacked by a raider who yanks a bloody stick out of a pile of rubble – and are introduced to Alice when she bursts from the rubble and sucks the guy dry. Alice hastily informs them that she’s not a threat to them (she was just thirsty after, you know, two centuries of being staked), and they end up trusting her enough to take down the rest of the raiders with her. Victor does his best to explain what’s happened to her, and she does her best to explain her vampiric nature to him. Feeling bad for her, and like he’s finally found a kindred spirit in all this (uh, no pun intended), he invites her to travel with him, switching to a night time schedule to accommodate her. . .at least, until they go to a certain quarry mined by Dunwich Borers to clear out the raiders there. . .
Victor Bros. Parody: Snow White
Well, folks - along with the Pinocchio idea, I was just thinking about doing a parody story of Snow White (Walt Disney verse and other) with CB/FW casts. ;)
BUT this would be a gender-bend of Snow White, like Cinderella parody by nebby chan’s.
Here is a draft for the casts:
Victor VD as Snow Victor
A handsome young man who is timid, but very kind-hearted and gentle with purity. However, when the jealous King was trying to kill him for being “Fairest One of All,”  Snow Victor runs into the forest until he found the House Full of Dwarves.
Victoria Everglot as the Princess of South
A beautiful, good-hearted princess who only wanted to seek for the right man with pure hearts - despite her parents’ law of engagement. She wasn’t satisfied to be engage with King Barkis because of his vain personality with greed. However, when she met Snow Victor, she began to have feelings with him.
The 9 Dwarves :
General Bonesparte as Doc Kochen - the leader of all dwarves who are children
Victor F as Shy Sieger - the shyest and “lonely” of all
Elsa Van Helsing as Little Miss Elsa - quiet and mature of all
Bob as Bommel Bob - the most rounded, plumpest of all
Weird Girl as Seltsam - the oddest dwarf of all
The Skeleton Girl (from Corpse Bride) as Skelly Madchen - the cheerful of all, and the sister of the skeleton boy.
The Skeleton Boy (from Corpse Bride) as Boney Matrose - the cheerful of all, and the brother of the skeleton girl
Edgar “E” Gore as Hunchy Edgar - the dopest and oddball of all, and chatty
The Boy from the Town (who finds “grandpa” in Corpse Bride) as Simple Stadtgunge - the very quietest little dwarf of all.
Lord Barkis Bittern as The Wicked King
A vain, cruel king who always ask the mirror for “Who is the Fairest One of all?” many times. However, he was jealous of Snow Victor’s “male beauty,” while enraged that he is “Fairest of All.” So he plots to kill his step son, to make sure that he will be the Fairest of the World.
Emily would be the Magic Mirror
The talking mirror who answers the King, but assured that Snow Victor will be Fairest of All.
Nassor would be the “sorcerer” of the castle’s lab (he would help the King to change his form)
Mayor Burgemiester as the Hunter
William Van Dort will be the old King, who wished to “have a son” (Father of Snow Victor)
Nell Van Dort will be the old widowed Queen (who married a new king until her “death” do her part)
The kitchen staff, Mayhew, and others from CB will be the kitchen staff.
AND yes... the Victors’ dogs and their gals (Missy and Persephone), Black Widow, Maggot, and the ravens will be the “forest” animals. XDDDD
This would be a cute idea. ;)
OC Tag Game!
Thanks @owen-with-dashes for tagging me!
Rules: Share inspiration for your characters’ names and tag some other writers!
FOSTERED
Reeve Aldaine
Actual meaning: steward, bailiff
Does the meaning connect with her character? No, hahhaha
Reeve went through a couple of names, actually (Nell was her original name, changed to Glynne I think? until I settled with Reeve). Don’t really know why I chose it, I think I was just waiting for a name that clicked! Pretty sure I didn’t actually like her name though, just grew on me over time (I like it now!). As for her last name, I chose it based on how it fit with her first name!
Harrison Frost
Actual meaning: son of harry
Does the meaning connect with his character? lol also no loool
Harrison’s name has an interesting history actually (sort of). I came up with his nickname first (Ris) after finding the name Rhys (obviously not pronounced RHIS but), and gathered inspo from there. I wanted to name a character Ris, but never made the connection between the two. I found the name Harrison, thought it was a win, and realized Ris could be a nickname. Hence, Harrison’s uncommon nickname, lol. (This in theory, should’ve been simple but alas.)Though I do prefer his full name now, pretty sure my intention was just to call him Ris throughout the series, but that’s definitely not the case now! And for his last name it’s a tragedy and I wish I could change it lol (nothing wrong with the name just think there could’ve been a better fit).
Foster Creed
Actual meaning: Of the woods, forest
Does the meaning connect with his character? It’s his actual aesthetic tho smol forest nymph boi (not purposeful but it works)
Ha, Foster’s name has an interesting backstory too! I initially named him Foster because I just liked the name, but his name literally created the main plot. I realized Foster isn’t a *super* common name, and wanted to explain it, and 13-year-old me thought it was a great idea to say his name rep’d his experience in foster homes (and was a nickname). That basically helped me create the base plot of the foster homes, so while his name didn’t come from anything special, it did drive the plot (but no the books aren’t named after him tbh harrison is more important than him oops). Also his real name is August as in August Rush and I have no regrets. (again with the last name thing, nothing wrong with it, I just ehh.)
here’s the explanation of his name in book one ft. some very old horrible writing but he info dumps his whole life story:
“Foster, huh?” I ask, curious.
“Yeah.” He replies, shaking his head with a laugh.
“What’s the story behind it?” He sighs, as if he’s told this story one too many times.
“Ever since I was a kid, I had no clue what my name was. You see, I was put into those foster homes, well I don’t know for what reason, but anyway my parents never said anything about me, not my name, or my age, not anything. I wasn’t the greatest kid around, always making trouble, so they kept switching the foster homes I was in. Once when I was in a home with three other boys, Ris befriended me and started calling me Foster when I told him I’d switched homes seventeen times.” I blink back at him, shock overcoming me.
*shock overcoming me*
(also the lies in what Foster says yo he’s a cinnamon roll boi u ain’t no suave boi)
Lonan Clark
Actual meaning: blackbird
Does the meaning connect with his character? yuppers cuz he flies away from all his problems
(this also leads to beautiful fanart such as:)
Tumblr media
All by the amaaaaaazing @sarahkelsiwrites :) (so good!)
Lonan’s first name doesn't have much of a story, just found the name through Magic Baby Names I think, and rolled with it (magic baby names is blessed). His last name on the other hand was created because I was driving to New York, had no internet, needed a last name ASAP, saw a street sign, and the rest is history. Though I am thrilled that his name means blackbird, lol the beatles boi in me was like queeeeen yeesssss.
Darren Peterson
Actual meaning: great
Does the meaning connect with his character? So much yes very many yes
Pretty sure his name was going to be Dennis, lol. I think I was making his brother a character profile, and was using @sarahkelsiwrites’ profile of her character Delilah for formatting inspo, saw the name Darren somewhere in there, stole it, and here we areeee. Also stole the last name Peterson from her, ooooops.
Lincoln Mayhew
Actual meaning: From the settlement by the pool.
Does the meaning connect with his character? Sounds just about as pretentious as him.
I’m pretty sure I took his name from a list, not that interesting, but tis my space to say yuppers Lincoln and Lonan are basically the same name oops I know. (I get really attached to things easily hence why I didn’t change it lol ooooops.)
Christiane “Double” Aldaine
Actual meaning: Follower of Christ
Does the meaning connect with her character? Not really heh
I decided to explain this one because it’s kind of weird, lol. Christiane “Double” Aldaine is Reeve’s younger sister, and the name backstory is *so* ?? I just ? Basically, Reeve has an older sister named Christiane too who died, so her mom named her youngest daughter after her, so Reeve (who isn’t a fan) and also to differentiate between the two, nicknames her sister Double (because she’s a double of the original name). Double is also known as ‘Chris’ in the spinoff, because she obviously doesn't know her sister calls her this. So many naaames. oof.
I’M DISAPPOINTED
Clifford Wright
Actual meaning: ford by a cliff
Does the meaning connect with his character? No, but Sarah calls him ford by a cliff a lot lol
It took me a bit to find Clifford’s name, but when I found it, typed out CLIFFORD in all caps in my document, lol. His last name didn’t stem from anything but has led to many jokes like this:
“My name’s Clifford Wright.” I start hesitantly, reading off the words Julian wrote about me with pure caution. “Which is stupid, because I know everyone thinks I’m Clifford Wrong. You know why? Because I never do anything that makes sense.”
im deceased.
“pure caution”
Ben “Benjamin” Wright and Gracelyn “Grace” Wright
Actual meaning (Ben): Son of my right hand
Does the meaning connect with his character? Ben is always your right hand man stillllll
Actual meaning (Grace): Goodness and generosity.
Does the meaning connect with her character? Grace is more like the opposite of goodness and generosity
Grouping Ben and Grace together because they share the same backstory. In 2015, I was driving back down from New York and really needed names. I found Gracelyn in my name list doc, and came up with Ben on the spot (the creativityyy)
So this was fun! Thanks again @owen-with-dashes for tagging me! I’m going to tag @sssoto, @sarahkelsiwrites, @shaelinwrites, and @alliewritesbooks to do this!
Another one. Remember Mayhew's death? After Nell Van Dort treated him like dirt under her fancy booties and didn't even notice him die? When he arrives at the Ball & Socket, Victor greets him like family. And is genuinely horrified when he realizes what just happened. Victor never forgot his working-class roots, and probably felt affinity with the old man over them both being beaten down by Nell.
(i just feel really bad for Mayhew overall tbh)
Ok but can we talk about the little bits of Victor’s personality we see scattered throughout the movie?
Victor is a great example of what I like to call “the movie hints that this character has a complex personality but we don’t get to see it because of the movies circumstances” We know him as an anxiety riddled disaster, which makes sense because that’s how he is for most of the film (due to the whole “Emily” thing. You gotta admit, going through all that shit in roughly one day is a LOT) but we get little glimpses other than that.
This gif is a great example:
Tumblr media
I love the little detail of him rolling his eyes. Gives the impression that he’s kinda Tired Of Everyone’s Tomfuckery™️ I honestly see him as the kind of guy who wouldn’t be too afraid to make a REALLY passive aggressive remark towards someone. He would never be direct in confrontation (unless the situation absolutely calls for it), but he would be totally fine with making subtle jabs under his breath.
Another example is the fact that he’s willing to lie to Emily to get back to Victoria. Not because he has to be married to her, but because he wants to see her, and doesn’t want her to worry. This shows a strong sense of loyalty, and that he is willing to play a tad dirty if it means getting back to a loved one. (This same sense of caring and loyalty is also shown after he argues with Emily; he’s actually remorseful for hurting someone who’s been kind to him, and tries to apologize in a way that’s meaningful to her; he sees her playing the piano, and joins in to try and reconcile.)
Also, him reuniting with Scraps is really cute; he’s so happy about it,,, poor boy has a big heart, he just doesn’t get the chance to show it.
ALSO the fact that he is actually willing to fight a guy wielding a sword, while basically completely unarmed, if it means saving Victoria, says a lot. It’s the only time we see him get pissed (and I will NEVER tire of how he says “Takes. Your hands. Off her.”) and it’s fantastic. Not to mention that defiant glare he gives Barkis when he realized he’s lost the fight and is about to die. He’s about to get stabbed and killed, and he looks the man about to kill him right in the eye.
UGH I love this man so much, I could go on.
