Mr. Keating is so Brat coded

Todd is sassier? Angrier? Idk he definitely isn't that awkward as he's shown in the movie just really sad or frustrated most of the time (relatable boi-)

The boys swear. Like, a lot. Especially Neil. Sad most of the swearings were cut off in the movie :(

There are more poetry mentioned, really nice.

Keating is Todd's personal bully. As an introverted person myself I would have hated Keating irl not gonna lie, but he's a nice person and he has his reasons so I forgive him.

Neil is so dramatic. Also very Impulsive. And also very Hotheaded.

Knox is so fucking creepy I can't even-

McAllister definitely has homoerotic desires for Keating and I stand by my word

Meeks is definitely gay- or Aro. He's cute.

The metaphors for sex and orgasms are crazy

Well this are the things I noticed that are a little different from the movie and the script, I did read them partly before but I finally finished them today and I'll just.. Cry on the floor... Like Todd..

Though I loved most of it, I liked how the movie explained some parts a little more detailed, just wished some scenes made it in the movies too.. And the boys feel a little more alive- Like real guys around their age, puberty and creepy has a thin line between them

But seriously, I thought movie Knox was a creepy lil boy, but the original Knox gives me a little hard time to love him.

Headcanons: Charlie Dalton, Neil Perry and Todd Anderson Taking Care of Their Sick S/O

Warnings: The reader has a cold so... yeah. Also, since I'm sick myself, my brain isn't really working at it's normal level so apologies for any mistakes! (Let me know if I need to add any)

(A/N: Unfortunately I'm still sick (it's only been a few days). Fortunately, I'm still motivated to write headcanons to get me through this relatively mild illness (and I'm starting to feel better)! I've got a Todd one-shot draft that I started a year ago and never got around to finishing, so here's my first offering to the Dead Poets Society fandom. I'd love to write more for it, both reader-insert and not. I'm not sure if I'll end up writing any more sick fics (I've already written hcs for Yellowjackets and Abed Nadir and Annie Edison from Community) since I should be better soon, but if you're still interested check out my fandom list and requesting info and feel free to send an ask!)

CHARLIE

Charlie will jokingly tell you that you’re disgusting.

If you’re not amused by that, he’ll awkwardly but sincerely apologise, his mortification thinly veiled.

He isn’t entirely sure what the hell to do to make you less sick.

(He'll have to consult his more medically knowledgeable friends for advice)

He will ask you if you want him to kiss it all better.

(And he will not hesitate to kiss you when you give him the go ahead)

Suffice it to say, he does not care all that much about getting sick himself.

(A small part of him hopes that he does get sick so you'll have to take care of him)

He will spend so much time with you, you’d think you were dying.

He will also get you anything you ask for (even if it has no clear use in making you physically better- he just wants to make you happy).

If his earlier attempt at joking doesn't work, he'll still persist in cracking jokes and making you laugh to make you feel better.

(If your laughter causes you to break out into a coughing fit, though, he will feel awful).

NEIL

Neil knows exactly what to do.

He may not like his dad's dream of him becoming a doctor, but damn he has such a knack for looking after you.

He makes sure you’re drinking enough fluids and taking any medicine you need to take.

No matter how disgusting you might get, Neil is completely unfazed the whole time.

If anything, he'll find it funny and try to keep you in as high spirits as possible.

If he does mind getting sick, he certainly doesn't show it.

For example, he doesn't hesitate when kissing you on the cheek or forehead.

He loves you so much that it really won’t matter to him if you can- or do- get him sick.

He’ll regularly ask you if there’s anything that you want or need, and if you’re comfortable, and if you’re too hot or cold.

It’s evident that he cares about you getting better.

He’ll sit at your bedside and try to take your mind off of how you’re feeling.

But, he will insist that you need to rest up, so when you’re asleep or trying to fall asleep he’ll be as quiet as humanly possible to make sure he doesn’t wake you up.

If he does end up waking you, he’ll feel terrible about it.

He’s so loving and caring anyway, but especially when you’re sick.

TODD

This guy is fucking terrified.

He assumes that anything he does will only make you sicker.

A small part of him is convinced you will die under his care.

So, he begs Neil for advice, and Neil humours him so that Todd doesn’t drive himself nuts.

Todd will regularly ask you if you need something, and he’ll repeatedly offer you whatever Neil advised him about.

He’s also completely torn between his innate desire not to get himself sick, and his deep love and affection for you.

So, please don’t get upset with him if he recoils almost every time you cough and sneeze, because he does spend as much time as he possibly can at your bedside.

Speaking of which, Todd sits at your bedside like a loyal golden retriever.

He’ll hold your hand (internally panicking about your high temperature, of course) and place the occasional kiss on the back of it.

He’ll also read some of his poems, works in progress and completed, out to you, and he’ll make sure to pick plenty that are about you specifically.

Sure, he’s nervous, but you love his poetry and all he wants to do is reduce how terrible you feel.

More hc!! (They are all mini essay's again:})

Todd has a strined relationship with his parents but is closer to his mother, sense she was always more warm to him and he has less bad memories. (There's a few and there really bad, like they thing when he thinks about him) he's still second to Jeff, like his mam will fawn over Jeff than todd, unlike his dad who just goes on about Jeff and only Jeff.

Meeks is a complete and utterly mamas boy, he is a carbon copy of his mother and she loves it so much. She fawns over him and happy she is that they look the same. (They also have similar interests, she's a big nerd to and his dad's more sporty but loves him non the less) also super close with all his aunts

Pitts adores his both his parents, he lives baking with his mom and gossiping and talking about who he likes and blah blah. (She's really cool and chill, like super excepting of everything) but also his dad, they go photographying together and was the one who got him into it.

Knox loves both his parents, not super close to either but very close to his grandparents on his mom's side (his favourite is his grandad) also adores his nana on his dad side, helps take Carr if her alot (she has dementia and also his grandad is dead)

Charile likes his parents, doesn't love them and isn't close with either and pretends he doesn't care. (He does and desperately wants their love, part if the reason he acts out sm) he's closest with his older sister and would die for her. (She loves him just as much if not more)

Neil is complicated, he loves both his parents even if it's hard. He's nit very close with either, his father is to strict and controlling (Neil's understands why he's like that but still hates it) and his mother is very closed off (she has some from of depression, I don't think she wanted to marry Mr Perry but was forced and it effected her badly over the years. Plus his lack if effective make it worse)

Cameron loves his parents and they love him, but in more of a "i love you cause we're family and I have to" way. I don't think Cameron was panned for and it made their lives very messy (also partly why the moved to England) they were never bad to Cameron, they act very much like aunt/uncle and nephew. So their all close but not in a typical way basically. Unlike with his little sister, she was planned and they are great parents. (Cameron knows this and doesn't care, it does sadden him somtimes but he loves his sister to much ti really care)

He's probably closer with his grandparents (Mostly his granny) his granddad is a bit old fashion and also very old so he can't do alot. But his granny is very relaxed and fit so she does alot. (He helps her and takes care of them both when he can)

It's my first time seeing DPS shifter!! That movie is such a comfort for me (I know haha). I even got matching tattoos with my sibling based off of it with "Make your lives extraordinary". It was mostly based on the source material but a special someone does not die. Also I couldn't fit a girl in an all boys school, nor did I wanted to, so I went in as male.

It also took place in 1989, I wasn't going back that far.

I love Neil Perry, I wasn't going to leave him alone so we ended up as roommates, and adjusted Todd with Knox.

I actually have a lot to talk about, but I'm just going to break down how each character was like, kind of like a storytime which could fit in one post (if you're unsatisfied, you can always ring my inbox again, even disguise yourself by changing your tone of writing a bit)

Neil Perry

I'd like to say, this guy has no object permeance. If he get's excited then he becomes a literal hazard. One time, he pulled me so harshly by my wrist, to the point of dislocating my shoulder. disclaimer, he will vent out to you all night long if he's upset, not realizing it's 3am and you both have classes tomorrow, and you can barely keep your eyes open. Otherwise he's really sweet, and nice class participation as well. (idk why i mentioned that)

Todd Anderson

Todd, even though he claims "he can take care of himself", he can't. He's always lost, and childishly likes to ignore social cues. He's actually very gullible, at least with me. Other than that, for no reason at all, i'd sneak into his room to read his personal diary; like it was simply an interesting novel and not an invasion of someone's privacy, he wrote about every single social interaction he had that day.

Charlie Dalton

CHARLIE, CHARLIE, CHARLIE. other than his usual obnoxiousness (as seen in the media) he will get serious when required, personally for me, he had been the person I could tell ANYTHING to. He's responsible for writing inappropriate words in the bathroom stalls (this is the dr where i removed urinals, because excuse you, i am not man-ing like this; instead there were stalls) Sleeps with his mouth open, hits on every breathing things, but doesn't have interest in anyone.

Mr. Keating

I ASPIRE to be this man. Honestly throughout the lectures, when they took a weird turn, i was very much the "I'd like to be excluded from this narrative" type of guy.

He would never get mad if any of the student were to visit him, no matter the time, whether it was late at night, he never got mad at all!

I ended up having an entire convo on the multiverse with him, and he agreed and patted me on the back, saying "you're onto something, pal."

This was getting long, but tbh I enjoyed writing this (this had been in my drafts for weeks) im pretty sure their are only a handful of dps shifters, a handful of people shifting for THE BEST MEDIA EVER.

i get that your ask, requested a storytime, and this isn't that, i'm sure i'll make one, that'll actually be in the form of a story.

This is a character roleplay blog for Neil Perry (portrayed by Robert Sean Leonard) from the 1989 film Dead Poets Society.

The film takes place in the year 1959, but that won’t be acknowledged for the sake of this blog being well past that point in time.

Neil is a seventeen year old student in his junior year of high school at Welton Academy, an Episcopalian all-male preparatory boarding school in Vermont. His parents want him to go to Harvard and be a doctor, but his dream is to act.

His friends are Todd Anderson (@sweaty-toothedpoet), Knox Overstreet (@yawp-knoxious), Richard Cameron (@r-cameron-tradition), Steven Meeks (@mr-ill-try-anything-once), Gerard Pitts, Charlie Dalton (@dxltons), and Sterling Spick aka Stick (@pinnesasong).

I was thinking recently about how different the whole landscape of music discovery is now compared to when I was teenager and how so many of the bands was really into at the time ended up being much smaller than I initially thought they were. The 2000s was kind of a unique time in that it felt like all music was pretty much accessible if you knew where to look and all of these different platforms maybe weren't linked together the way they are now. Having any kind of context for what I was hearing felt much less common, so all of the albums/artists I was checking out were treated exactly the same. I kind of miss that.

The Pax Cecelia, Raein, Tower of Rome, Me and Him Call It Us, The Sawtooth Grin, Meet Me in St. Louis, Skycamefalling, An Albatross, Majority Rule, The Jonbenét, Sweep the Leg Johnny, Reversal of Man, A Textbook Tragedy, Neil Perry, Hewhocorrupts, Some Girls, This Day Forward, Devil Sold His Soul, and Hayworth - in my mind, all of these bands were as significant and recognizable as artists that still maintain some level of relevancy like City of Caterpillar, Jeromes Dream, Orchid, pageninetynine, The Fall of Troy, mewithoutYou, Dillinger, Glassjaw, The Sound of Animals Fighting, Every Time I Die, or The Blood Brothers. I remember when was 14/15 i found this massive torrent on ruTracker filled with Mathcore, Powerviolence, Grindcore, and Post Hardcore releases, it must have been 150 full albums. I downloaded that and it changed everything.

For better or worse, back then the only way I knew of to really gauge the popularity of an artist was the label they were on, whether their CD was in my local store, or if maybe they had a music video that would play on fuse. I'd listen to an artist for the first time with no expectations aside from maybe the artist/album name and the cover art. I know rateyourmusic was around but I definitely wasn't using it at that time, which also meant I had no idea what people even thought about any of this music outside of my group of friends. At that time so much of what I was hearing would come from a random blogspot upload or zippyfile/mediafire link from a sharethread. I could assume whether or not i'd like it based on the other albums that surrounded it on a list, but that's about it.

Now, I can't help but notice the number of monthly streams an artist has on spotify, since it's right there at the top of the page, or the average rating an album has on RYM and how many people rated it. Even if this doesn't directly change the listening experience, i'm still made aware of it and it must alter my perception in some way. I suppose I don't really have a strong point or conclusion to make here, I just found it interesting and figured maybe someone here would be able to relate.

Have you ever felt like drowning but when you're on land? Like oxygen is all around you but taking every single breath feels like going through a war. When you're holding back those tears, keeping a straight face and your throat is aching so much that you just want to give up? It's like drowning in everything. And nothing. You feel everything but want to feel nothing. Every bad memory, every bad feeling, floods your mind. And for a while you try to break through the waters. You try to remain afloat. Throwing your hands and legs in a desperate attempt to reach the surface, to swim towards the shore. Quite desperate, yet futile. After a while you stop. And you let yourself drown. You let yourself go deep, deep, and deeper still. Hoping that you'll reach the bottom. Hoping that you'll finally escape this. But It's an endless pit. It keeps going on and on and on. But you can't really die from this drowning. Because you can still breathe. Your lungs are still fully functional, taking in air and pushing it out. Air in, air out. In and out. But you can't do the same with those echoing voices in your head a and the things you are being told. Words that push through you and go in but you cannot push them out. It grows there, inside you spreading its root deep. Deep, deep, so deep. You hope it to grows around your heart and stops it from beating. Stops this mess once and for all. But it doesn't because of course, a parasite will never kill its host. And that leaves you drowning and yet still breathing. Not alive, not in the truest sense of the term. But just breathing.

Music headcanon

Ever wondered what type of music does the Slytherin Quidditch Team like? No? Well I did

Terence Higgs

He loves music. He has a Muggle gramophone (one with that funky tube) and lots of vinyls and one whole wall of his room is covered in posters.

Terry loves Elvis Presley and bands from British Wave. Gramophone always plays in his room no matter what he's doing.

He can also play the bass and learnt how to play piano when he was little but could use some refreshment of that skill.

Marcus Flint

Marcus doesn't really listen to music by himself. He doesn't like wizard-music like The Weird Sisters or Heartthrob and well, in Flint Manor or Hogwarts he can't really own a muggle device.

He mostly listens to music at Higgs so he listens to the same type of music Terence does. Marcus likes The Who the most. And often they would jump around and bop their heads passionately and scream the lyrics from memory.

Marcus used to scream "I hope I die before I get old" part from My Generation louder than the rest. Now he skips it.

Cassius Warrington

He lifes for the music. Cassie listens to punk rock and more noisy type of rock and metal.

But what he likes most are random just-starting small bands. He hates mainstream and did actually stop listening to some bands after they got popular. He says they lost their charm but really he just likes unpopular niche bands.

During the holidays Cassius often goes out to clubs with live music to find new bands.

And of course he can play the drums.

Peregrine Derrick

Perry's favourite band is Green Day. Fav songs are Who Wrote Holden Caulfield? And Panic Song.

And here's the issue, I can clearly see what he would listen to other than Green Day but is all after 90s...

Let's ignore that for a moment

He would also really like Franz Ferdinand. And he knows lyrics to Dear Maria Count Me In and Check yes Juliet by heart.

Also, he vows he hates spanish music but then he gets drunk and not only sings songs like Livin la Vida loca but also knows the whole lyrics.

Lucian Bole

Luke likes more chill music. He likes Frank Sinatra and other jazz artists. He also really enjoys instrumentals. He, compared to the rest of the boys, likes music that calms you down, not gives you energy (or a way to spend your energy).

He hates John Lennon.

And one again, time issue, but he would love The Postal Service.

If he could learn how to play any instrument he would choose a saxophone.

Adrian Pucey

He loves ABBA. Also, because of ABBA he got engaged in Eurovision song contest and watches it every year. His favourite song is Lay all your love on me but he knows and loves them all. He also really likes Michael Jackson.

Ade's music taste is two opposites and nothing in between because other than ABBA and Michael Jackson he likes black gangsta rap from 90s

He sings/raps while taking a shower. Yes, in shared showers in Hogwarts.

Graham Montague

Montague likes his music aggressive and noisy. He listens mostly to metal and screamo. He liked Neil Perry (I mean the screamo band) but then Miles told him the name origin, you know, Death Poets Society's Neil Perry and it hit too close to the home and since then Graham is kinda uncomfortable because he thinks about it while listening to their music.

What he looks out for in music is the ability to use up his energy and rage. If he you know, was a teen now and used spotify, his playlist name would be just like "Rage room music".

Miles Bletchley

He actually likes wizard bands and may (or may not) have hots for Lorcan d'Eath from Heartthrob. It's kind of embarrassing really.

Miles also loves Madonna and Dolly Parton (who doesn't).

Also, he loves musicals and songs from them. He tried so hard to convince the theatre club to perform something but sadly no one else wanted to sing.

Miles adores The Rocky Horror Picture Show, rewatches it every year and knows all the lines.

Getting a call at exactly midnight, only to hear that you'll be dying within the next twenty-four hours was something that Neil Perry fears, that's why he didn't join in the Deathcast because he felt that not knowing when he'll die seems more natural, and would ease his nerves. After all, he had plans for himself, he wanted to act! He wanted to be on the center stage performing to live audiences like he used to when he was young.

To a certain Todd Anderson, it might be a call from god, all his life he's been tossed aside, friends he can count with just his fingers, parents who never looked at him like they look at his older brother, he thought that maybe he can finally rest without any pain. Sure he doesn't know how he'll die, but the prospect of all his pain ending was more important to him than that. Though his parents forbid him from signing in the Deathcast, after all, they still had these gargantuan expectations towards him, yet have no plans in helping or supporting him. Which is why he sneakily signed himself up.

Charlie Dalton was a carefree individual, a ray of sunshine that brightens up the room, he was known to be a guy whole lived by the phrase 'Carpe Diem' and well with that and at the time good friends decided to playfully sign themselves on the Deathcast, he didn't at his friend's disappointment. Carefree as he might be, he still has plans on his own, and hopefully, he could live long enough to make that plans to fruition.

Knox Overstreet was a man whose life was well ahead of him, he worked hard for this yes and it makes him prouder of how hard he's come, though the expectations of his parents still weigh on his decisions, or how he wished he could've become a cook rather than a lawyer still resides in his brain he tries to think best at how's life been treating him. And maybe since his life is now stable, he could start pursuing his dream of cooking.

Steven Meeks and Gerard Pitts, are both good friends of Charlie Dalton and the reason why he's a third wheel most of the time. Both found each other through their shared love of robotics, while Gerard was tall, awkward yet passionate, Meeks was more of the inquisitive one, a fact given how much research he made once they learned of the DeathCast, and upon further research, he decided to agree when Pitts said they should sign up, at the pretense of both of them telling if they get a call so they'll spend that day to the fullest. Hopefully, it won't come till a long time has passed.

Richard Cameron, Neil's friend who studies the same course as him. Pragmatic, logical, and thinks this whole Deathcast thing is simply uninteresting. Why would you spend your energy on your death when you can just live and continue on while being clueless about your own demise, it was how it was always been before Deathcast started. People have started to become dependent, fearful of that fated call. Which is why he didn't sign himself on the Deathcast.

"Who knew the day that I'll meet you, the day that I'll fall for you, is the day I'll lose you."

On December 15 just as the clock strikes twelve Neil Perry and Todd Anderson receive the fated call that tells them they'll both die today. And fate weaves to make them meet in the cafe where Charlie Dalton was playing, and with the addition of four other newfound friends, the group decides to cancel all their plans just to help the two enjoy their final day to the fullest, one final grand adventure to live what could've been a lifetime in just a day.

Okay so I had to take a shower and let my body stew while I let my brain stew on this topic specifically (the shower DID take like an hour oopsies) but this means I have a lot of ideas about it.

So to preface I'm also a dead poets society girlie so my brain tries to say oh I know exactly the thing for this! and goes to take the box labeled Neil Perry thoughts, headcanons, and scenario runthroughs off the shelf to use but I tried to avoid that and instead think about how the school would act objectively and then go deeper into Charles character. But also like, be aware of that effect.

I'm also an education major and come from a long line of education people so I'm quite familiar with how schools act especially when things crash and burn. They always choose a scapegoat to take the fall. There's a few ways they do that

1. They choose one person who was so involved with the issue that they're already going down no matter what so the school lets them be the one responsible for ALL of it, usually a faculty member or multiple faculty members.

2. They don't have a clear person to take the fall so they make people that they already wanted to get rid of the scapegoats. Basically the kill two birds with one stone scapegoat method

3. They make it the students' faults entirely, blaming it usually on them breaking some rule and suspending/expelling them to avoid addressing all the cracks in the system that LED to students being able to do whatever they did or didn't do

4. And if it's REALLY bad and too obviously a fundamental issue in the school they let 1 or more of the higher ups take the fall for what happened so the school can stay afloat

Now in Charles death, the boys were clearly not supposed to be out there at the lake so they were definitely Breaking A Rule there. Since there were no staff there when Charles intervened, and also not out at the lake, it's more a through the grapevine, he said she said, "up to interpretation" situation at least in the boarding schools mind. And if these boys who hurt Charles were considered to be his friends, then that gives the school a perfect chance to twist it into not a complete ignorance of his death but instead a twisted version that makes them look better and less guilty as the school itself. Schools will make decisions internally for a reason, and then publicly say they made that decision for a completely different reason in order to spin a tale where they aren't the bad guy or at least as much of the bad guy.

So because of this here's my idea of how the result of his death went: St Hilarion still chose to say that Charles did die, that he died of hyperthermia. But they would twist it to be instead of Charles being beaten by other boys and THEN dying of hyperthermia, because that would raise questions about how they ALLOWED that to happen and call into question their care and safety as a school, that Charles and his "friends" as they choose to view them deciding to sneak out and daring each other to go for a winter swim. And claiming that he died of hypothermia as a result of this careless misbehavior. Because claiming that the death occurred as a result of breaking the rules clears them of fault because they have the rules there and the boys broke them and that's how it led to such a tragedy because of silly boys not following what they had in place because they would never let that occur on their watch.

They then either suspend and/or expel the boys for breaking the school rules and make it clear to the public that they will be cracking down on these rules. They write the boys off and get rid of them and then pretend the problem doesn't exist and never happened. Even if everyone aware actually knows that that's untrue and know through the grapevine bits and pieces that poke holes in the schools story it doesn't matter because PUBLICLY its the truth so it therefore is written in stone as the truth.

Making the students the entire scapegoat under the idea that it's more digestible to parents it was an accident occuring from misbehaving so they won't be scared to have their sons go there, and it absolves them from being involved in not supervising them well enough that a student was able to be beaten badly enough to have internal bleeding and hyperthermia so extreme that he dies without any awareness of the school.

So I think they told both Charles parents and the public that his death was essentially his fault from misbehaving and breaking rules to cover their own asses and let them believe their son died from being a stupid reckless boy. Which from what we've seen of his father he would be quick to believe. In his eyes Charles dying because of misbehaving makes sense to him and so that's final: his death was a stupid mistake and he once again failed to teach him (through physically beating him) to behave. And now we haven't actually seen much of what Charles' relationship with his mother was like but even if she notices somethings fishy in their story whether that's from knowing those boys weren't actually Charles' friends or even knowing in her heart of hearts that Charles would not do something like that, we already saw her not say anything as her husband beats their son, so there's no way she'd speak back to him about flaws in the facts and what he's already decided on about Charles death.

So that's what I think the "covering up" of Charles death actually was. Because I can't imagine Charles parents talk about his death much. And if they do I can't imagine it's to rehash the causes of it. So I don't Charles and Edwin would have learned this from them I bet it was learning about it in the newspapers. Which is so devastatingly awful. But yeah sorry this was so sad it is just what my brain came up with

That moment when the camera focuses on Charles after Crystal tells Edwin that she thought about how her parents might be scared and looking for her after looking into Becky Aspen's mom's mind breaks my heart.

Charles would know how his parents reacted to him going missing.

He's been looking in on them for 30 years.

The boarding school covered up what happened to him.

Did they tell his parents that he died?

Did they tell his parents he ran away?

Do they know whether he's dead or alive?

Did his dad even care?
