Dare I say it?

From Kishore Kumar to Asha Bhosle to a little bit of Mumtaz and Kajol - this is a Sunday Rangoli show in my head. I am teeing off a three-minute conversation with Raju and Aftab. We did a collective sigh of the micro nuances Kishore Kumar brought to his songs. We marveled at the lines

'Thoda hai, thodae ki zaroorath hai'

He has sung for one brother (in the movie Khatta Meeta), romanticizing his future with his girlfriend. The same lines are sung by KK for another brother thinking about his white whale, a van he is trying to fix. With Raju singing those lines and mentioning KK's 'gayaki' genius, it got embedded in my immediate consciousness waiting to resurface. Here is a little insight into how my mind maps songs to situs. Suppose Chandra asks me what uppuma should we have. I typically go 'saboodhaana doondtha hai, saboodhaana doondtha hai' in a poor offkey imitation of Bhupinder Singh's

'Ek akela is sheher mein... aabodhana doondtha hai'.

I know. She suffers a lot. When she quizzed me about certain 'surprise' birthday parties that may or may not occur this week, I did the blasphemy of singing a KK song.  

'Keh dhoon thumhein? Ya chup rahoon? Dil mein mere aaj kya hai... jo bolo tho janoon, Guru thumko maanoon, Chalo ye bhi waadha hai'

This song quickly became the earworm for the week. I am tying it back to the gayaki discussion and KK's clear as sunlight genius. The possible brief for the song from Yash Chopra to RDB, poet Ludhianvi, singers KK, and Asha Bhosle - 'this is a Salim-Javed show that I have to direct. One brother is intensity personified, and his story arc is one of escalating personal tragedy. We need this song for the other brother as a pressure valve. This brother is a happy person with a future to look forward to with a girl who guarantees normalcy. What have you got?' RDB comes up with a beautiful tune set in a conversational style with dips and pauses and a banter space. Through the poet, Neetu Singh's character throws situations at the Shashi Kapoor character with some pre-conceived innocent outcomes. He squashes them with more thrill-seeking alternatives that she probably wants to come from him. The opening line itself is challenging to reproduce, even if it is for an audience of one. KK starts with a ballast - Keh dhoon thumhein - the slightest of pauses - ya chup rahoon - more questions in three short words, but the rahoon also has his freakish yodeling. Any hopes of doing anything other than just listening goes out of the window. The quintessential Asha surfaces in her 'are na na' and then 'nahin re, nahin re, nahin re'. You can capture an era with those lines and how Asha renders them. The second set of 'nahin re' has the slightest of changes compared to the first as Shashi Kapoor gets that more demanding and Neetu Singh has to be a bit more decisive with her 'no's. This Asha note was the point when I made the jump to Mumtaz and

'Jai Jai shiva shankar'

from aap ki kasam. Lata sang that number where Mumtaz excels with the 'gir jaaoongi, mar jaaongi' down the steps taken to an art form for drunken trance. I let my mind wander to a what-if - why not Asha instead of Lata in this number. The Asha notes and gayaki would have made an already intoxicating song giddier. While it would just be impossible to dance like you don't know how to dance while being drunk, the way Mumtaz does, Kajol comes mighty close. The closest we have is Kajol's

'Zara sa jhoom loon mein'

And it is now the male singer forced to say no with 'na re baba na.' It felt like a complete circle in my head, forcing me to stop branching any further. It's raining outside. It is a Sunday. Holidays are looming. Time again to hit this playlist a few more times and see where the mind wanders.

Riddhima Kapoor has been revisiting memories of her time with late father Rishi Kapoor. She has now shared a childhood picture with Rishi and one from mother Neetu Kapoor’s birthday celebrations on her Instagram stories.

Rishi breathed his last on April 30. He had been battling leukemia for the past two years. He had returned from New York after a year-long treatment and was even declared cancer free last year.

The childhood picture shows Riddhima as a young girl, twinning with Rishi in white. The other picture shows Neetu sitting in front of a cake on her birthday. Riddhima is seen sitting close to her while Rishi, Riddhima’s husband Bharat Sahni and daughter Samara are standing behind them.

Last week, Riddhima shared a selfie with her brother, actor Ranbir Kapoor, and their mom. Sharing the picture on her Instagram stories, Riddhima wrote: “Got your back ma. Your pillars.” She had also shared a couple of monochrome pictures recently. One of the images has Rishi holding his mother, the late Krishna Raj Kapoor’s hand while dancing. Captioning the image, Riddhima wrote: “Reunited with his most favourite person.” The other image was from Rishi and Neetu Singh’s wedding celebrations.

She arrived in Mumbai from New Delhi on May 2 by road to be with her mother and Ranbir Kapoor. Riddhima did not get permission to fly down due to the nationwide COVID-19 lockdown, and could not be in Mumbai on time to attend her father’s last rites.

Owing to the lockdown, Riddhima, who lives in Delhi, had to travel over 1400 km by road all the way to Mumbai, in order to be with her mother, in the time of bereavement. She couldn’t attend Rishi’s last rites. She later accompanied Neetu, Ranbir and his girlfriend Alia BHatt for the immersion of Rishi’s ashes at Banganga.

The massive Lord Shiva in chalk white plaster, atop R.K. Studios, has heavy busts. Down below in the dressing rooms of the studio, designers are busy stuffing leading ladies' bras with cotton wool, rubber and foam. For Raj Kapoor's leading ladies, two things are a must: They must have heavy busts and they must be in love with Raj Kapoor. Vyjanthimala had small busts so they were covered with foam, Zeenat Aman is not in love with Raj Kapoor, so she pretends to be.

Kapoor was already married when he made his first film Aag with three leading ladies - Kamini Kaushal, Nigar Sultana, Nargis. Out of the passion and flames of Aag, Kapoor gathered Nargis in his arms and hoisted her high on the R.K. banner. With violin in one hand and Nargis in the other he became the symbol of true love.

After Barsaat, Awara, Shri 420 and Jagte Raho, the pair became the Indian screen's most immortal love legend. The Indians were passionately discussing the Raj-Nargis ishk kahani. The Russians, on the other hand, sincerely believed that Kapoor and Nargis were husband and wife, until he received a happy wedding anniversary telegram from his wife, Krishna, during one of his visits to Moscow.

In fact, it was in the land of vodka and the Volga that the Raj-Nargis myth was blown out. It was in Moscow that Nargis felt that Raj had taken her for granted and that he was watching Padmini with unusual curiosity. Nargis married Sunil Dutt, left films and never again spoke to Kapoor. Today, she prefers to call him "that horrible man".

Nargis, daughter of a singing woman, had honest, almond eyes. She was tall and slim. She attended Queen Mary School in Bombay, and spoke fluent English. The English bit has always impressed Kapoor. The other day while watching an old RK film, he told Zeenat: "Don't think you are the only convent-educated girl. Thirty years ago, I had a leading lady who wore jeans, spoke English and used French perfume." In fact, all his leading ladies - Nargis, Padmini, Vyjanthi, Simi, Dimple and Zeenat - speak English and have impeccable manners.

The tongues wagged much after Nargis left Kapoor. People predicted his doom. The emotional let-down suited him so well that Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai was a bigger hit. Padmini, compared to Nargis, was short, top-heavy and coarse with a froggy voice. But she was the new sex-symbol of R.K. Once more there were rumours of another romance. One day Padmini declared her marriage to a doctor and left. She quit films to settle in the US.

Then came the last flame of R.K. banner, Vyjanthimala. She had made jubilee hits with both Dilip Kumar and Rajendra Kumar. The orthodox, puritan, vegetarian and over-confident Vyjanthi was swept off her feet by Raj. The affair that spanned Europe with stopovers in the Alps, almost seemed a remake of the original Raj-Nargis love story.

Raj who liked his women with shampooed hair and Worth perfume, tolerated Vyjanthi's Ramtirth Bramhi-oiled braid, and her peculiar herbal body smell. Vyjanthi, the Iyengar Brahmin, in turn accepted his lips reeking of whisky and masala murgi. The remake looked so real that Krishna, who had passed off Padmini as a harmless cow, took refuge in hotels and hospitals.

Kapoor is an exhibitionist and cannot keep anything to himself. He likes to be seen with his women, in a darbar full of people. Little did he realize that his dearest friend, Dr Bali, watched the women at the darbar with interest. While he was in London to process Sangam, he entrusted Vyjanthi to Dr Bali. The doctor, apart from being charming and well-dressed, was a trainee in the R.K. Studios.

He grew fond of Vyjanthi and she responded. It turned out to be sangam in reality with Kapoor singing Dost Dost Na Raha. However I think that it is Dr Bali whom Kapoor misses more than Vyjanthi. To this day Vyjanthi has not spoken to Kapoor. She refers to him as "that old fool". Both Nargis and Vyjanthi survive in his memory through their portraits in his cottage.

Simi, who followed Vyjanthi, in Mera Naam Joker, never made it to the wall. She was the clinging type and too smooth. One day like his other leading ladies, she too got married. But her fatal mistake was to hang around. Today, the R.K. camp, forgets even to include her on Kapoor's birthday party list despite her telephone inquiries about the party.

By the time Dimple became R.K.'s leading lady, Kapoor had surrendered his image as a romantic hero to his son Chintu.

There is another characteristic about all his leading ladies. They may curse and condemn him, but they all jump into a barren valley of frustration after him. For them he is the ultimate. After him there is no other love or profession. Just mundane things like respectability, marriage, security. Therein lies the secret of Kapoor's charm.

He is, for them, an experience and fantasy. The stars want to be part of that fantasy. So when a Zeenat Aman, dressed in ragged clothes, broke into Kapoor's cottage and touched his feet to ask for a role in Satyam Shivam Sundaram, it inspired her rivals like Vidya Sinha to say: "Who cares for Raj Kapoor."

Even little known starlets like Nivedita, on the R.K. payroll for seven years waiting for a suitable role that she never got, or Neetu Singh, again on the payroll waiting for a role in Bobby, which Dimple bagged, do not regret the long wait on the brink of fantasy. And Kapoor knows this. That is one reason why he never makes an exclusive contract with any of his leading ladies. He feels that he may change his mind before the women.

He enjoys every bit of his love life simply merely because a woman is part of his only passion-the films. He enjoys the union. He enjoys the separation and the walkouts. His image as the jilted lover is eternal.

The 67-year-old actor, who returned to India last month, posted a throwback picture of himself from the sets of the 1991 film Henna. In the photo, Rishi Kapoor could be seen shaving his beard. Sharing the photo on Twitter, Rishi Kapoor mentioned that it was sent by one of his friends. “Well that beard was gotten rid of. This picture, sent by a friend, is during the filming of Henna,” he captioned the post. Henna also featured Zeba Bakhtiyar, Ashvini Bhave, Farida Jalal, late actor Saeed Jaffrey and Raza Murad.

Rishi Kapoor returned to India with his wife Neetu Kapoor on September 10 after spending nearly a year in New York, where he was undergoing cancer treatment. He was diagnosed with cancer in September last year.

On the work front, Rishi Kapoor was last seen in Jhootha Kahin Ka, co-starring Jimmy Sheirgill, Lillette Dubey, Sunny Singh and Omkar Kapoor.

Bollywood actor Ranbir Kapoor turns 37 today. Last night Ranbir hosted a bash for his industry friends and colleagues. The party was attended by the likes of Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan and Deepika Padukone to name a few.
