dream log 5/4/24
i had a dream that… there was some sort of apocalypse… there was some sort of end. god, i can't remember now. but it was so good. the main team that saved the world had a huge mansion and there were two-- betrayer teammates? the villains?-- and after the end, they locked them in a (large room/wing of the mansion) forever, like fancier solitary confinement, as punishment. but it was a man and a woman, so as the years went by they had a bunch of kids in there, and those kids grew up too.
once a year or something they would let them out for what seemed like a perfectly friendly campfire to catch up. there was one hero guy… who had lost a lot, i don't remember. he kept bouncing his leg and saying "not yet" but we didn't know what he meant by that. he was tenser, angrier, but pleasant on the surface.
i remember the tone of this "show" was that things were resolved, thematically, this was very much the epilogue. after-- literally more than a decade-- the very final shot or scene in this show was the one hero guy revealed to have broken in there and killed literally all of them in revenge. i think the implication was that he waited for them to have kids just to take more from them
(said interesting take on zombie apocalypse from the tags: Very slow deterioration via literally shrinking, someone had a notebook and was drawing over their hand sizes to note as the skin slowly-- necroticized by getting tighter? it wasn't urgent, the zombies just changed behavior and feeding, not like… aggression. there were some zombie lambs feeding on something yellow and dead but also being handled by humans at the same time)
(the second part of the dream involved going through the mansion prison room but it was like a huge puzzle dungeon, only thing worth saving from that: there was a mirror, gold-edged, shining, that you passed through like a portal to get to the next area, with a warning that it would make you confront/see the truth. when you went through you were prone afterwards processing the feeling of oneness/universal connection/mysterium this gave you, but it also hurt?? like the hurt of cold shock to a tooth root, or leaning into a painful dead limb. what?)

How Jeff Got His Balls Back
I was supposed to be finished with blogs/podcasts for the year after the most recent shit I released just two nights ago. But seeing the news post on Metal Injection’s Instagram account this morning excited me so much that before I even read the fucking story on their proper website, I went ahead and posted it on my Instagram story and wrote: “Way to go, Jeff! Congratulations, your balls and…

Top 5 melodeath albums?
(I'd also love to hear about what you find is the difference in good death metal and good melodic death metal 👉👈😳)
So, to answer the second part of your ask first: generally I think that the term"melodic death metal", due to pure happenstance, ended up referring to two completely different genres that just happened to covergently evolve around the same time:
Traditional death metal but with a bit more emphasis on lead guitar melodic hooks, e.g. At The Gates, Bloodshot Dawn, Carcass starting with their Necroticism/Heartwork era
Basically just power (or sometimes prog) metal but with blast beats and death metal growls, e.g. Children of Bodom, Arch Enemy, Amon Amarth
And the later style is by far much more common than the former, at least in my experience. So a lot of melodic death metal inherits most of its musical elements less from traditional death metal and more from power metal.
This is not a BAD thing, but it does mean that the vast majority of melodic death metal is written less like a subgenre of death metal and more like a completely different genre that has very little in common with traditional death metal aside from the vocal style. Which means that a lot of things that work in trad death metal (abrupt stops and rythm changes, chromatic solos, loose song structures with no defined verse/chorus structure) don't work that well with the style that most melodeath bands play.
That being said, a couple of the albums I'm gonna include here DO play that first style that is closer to trad death metal, i just don't think it's really representative of what most of the melodeath scene sounds like.
So anyway here's my list of fave melodeath albums.
Do have in mind that compared to other genres, I haven't listened to melodeath that frequently since my late teens, so my taste might be a little underdeveloped compared to my taste in other genres
Carcass - Heartwork
youtube
Eyes in the Void - Self-titled EP
youtube
(Kind of an unknown band, and kinda rough around the edges especially when it comes to the vocals, but this was the album that got me into the genre)
At the Gates - With Fear I Kiss The Burning Darkness
youtube
Brymir - Slayer of Gods
youtube
Aether - Tale of Fire
youtube
(Hopefully the contrast between Carcass, At The Gates and everything else on this list illustrates what I said about "melodeath" referring to two almost completely different genres. Carcass and At The Gates are melodic but they're still very distinctly rooted in traditional death metal, while everything else on this list could perfectly pass for power metal if you replaced the growls with clean vocals)
