Me, rambling to my wife about this crackpot theory I came up with in the shower about how Les Miserables may have been an answer to The Count of Monte Cristo, or at least could be read as such: ... But then Valjean didn't personally screw Javert over like Dantes' enemies did-
My wife: Are you sure Valjean didn't screw Javert? I thought I read that on AO3 once.
#the train of thought leading up to my statement was whether it was Valjean one could read as a foil to Dantes or Javert#'cause of Javert's whole obsession with bringing Valjean to justice#bookblr#les miserables#the count of monte cristo#anyway nothing's gonna come of this crackpot theory of mine 'cause I am no longer in school and have no more essays to write#but by golly this would be a delicious topic to write a big ol' thesis style paper on#still an English major nearly 10 years out of cool leg apparently#well both these books are French but still#OKAY BUT LISTEN the two authors were contemporaries#and maybe arguably friends? according to the bio sketch of dumas in the intro of my CoMC copy?#I would have to do more research on their relationship and also whenabouts each was writing their respective thing#cause iirc aren't both books set around the same time period as well (mid-19th century) with a lot of the action being in Paris?#anyway right#ignore me and my nerdy nerdy book thoughts#these have been rambling tags with usagi

autism be damned my boy can do calligraphy and knows a lot about capital punishment
#prince myshkin#lev nikolayevitch myshkin#the idiot#myshkin#no but i really think there are legitimate reasons to argue that myshkin could be seen as an autistic character#other than the fact that he literally checks of every criteria#there's also the fact that there is a frequent comorbidity of epilepsy and autism#which makes me think (tho i have not nearly done enough research on this to make any actual claims)#that there is a possibility that traits which we would today associate with autism could back in the day#before the term autism even existed#could be seen as something common among epicleptic people#and given that myshkin is already canonically neurodivergent and epileptic#it really isn't a stretch to say that if we were to apply modern day terminology on a 19th century character#he could be seen as an early example of an autistic character#which makes it very interesting to note how people in the book view and interact with him#(and even without the possible autism he's still a canon neurodivergent character cast as the protagonist in a 19th century book#which on its own is really interesting#especially considering the fact that dostoyevsky drew from experiences with his own epilepsy)#for example canon infantilization (which this post is definitely a joke on) the whole 'idiot' thing etc.#also the way he views himself! he has so much internalised ableism#i also think it's interesting that another character that exhibits a lot of autistic traits is kirillov#who's also canonically epileptic#my post#vince talks

Happy belated birthday Norway!
I tried to draw Nor and nyo Nor in an almost decent bunad
Because I hate myself.
Last year's drawing for comparison purposes.

On one level the book is about the life of a woman who is hardly more than a token in a great epic poem, on another it’s about how history and context shape how we are seen, and the brief moment there is to act between the inescapable past and the unknowable future. Perhaps to write Lavinia Le Guin had to live long enough to see her own early books read in a different context from the one where they were written, and to think about what that means.
-Jo Walton
#thinking of how her last four novels between 2004 and 2008 show a progressive blossoming of interest in classical literary traditions#following nearly half a century's worth of a career where she seems to actively avoid the influence of classical or medieval europe#idk. but i think this explains annals of the western shore as much as lavinia.#she gets so interested in what it means to share the same stories across space and time (and class and gender and nationality)#to be united in a community by having the same poetry#and in such an obvious way thinking about classics as a discipline is an incredible way to work through that#and i do think its an interest that must come out of having witnessed her own work unite people in community across time#if you're talking about the way stories and poems bring people together across time...#i read the texts passed on to me by renaissance humanists and 19th century philologists and byzantine monks and late antique scribes...#and they're the same across time and space but they're also not#and to have seen her own work reach people across space and time and be the same but also not... that must have been incredible#so: did living long enough to see her own early books read in a different context and to think about what that means#drive her to think about classical literature as she clearly was for the better part of a decade?#mine#reception#anyway i gotta think about this and email [redacted] tomorrow

One of the things that’s incredibly funny to me about Murderbot and ART’s meeting is that Murderbot is being so ridiculous about it.
ART: *bumps up the life support to make its construct passenger more comfortable, watches shows with its new friend, offers free surgery and advice to pass as a human, watches over Murderbot as it goes to do dangerous things, watches out for Murderbot’s new humans*
Murderbot: This asshole boat is trying to kill me and I hate it so, so much. Yes I’m being a brat about it, no I don’t intend to stop-
#19th#November#2022#November 19th 2022#secunit#murderbot#asshole research transport#the murderbot diaries#tmd#elk text#its unreliable narration is so fucking funny if you take two seconds to look at it from an outside perspective#murderbot even knows it's being petulant at times it just can't stop#truly the most relatable of all murder-based constructs tbh#like to be clear it has totally justifiable reasons for not wanting to do certain things#but it also can't communicate these reasons bc it's not in touch with its emotions#and can't verbalize what it's feeling#so it's stuck throwing a tantrum basically#which is so relatable that it is physically painful to me a little bit#this is the same character that took nearly 4 books to admit that its friend is its friend#....and also about 4 books to admit that ART was its friend#that tracks

Sir Hudson Lowe’s partisans have tried to represent his time at St. Helena as an enlightened proconsulship; they speak of the emancipation of to on of slaves, plantation of forests, improvement of the water supply…[But] …in dealing with the intransigent governor, the board of directors [of the East India Company] found it as difficult to get their authority respected as the Emperor did to preserve his dignity…
Gilbert Martineau, Napoleon’s Saint Helena
I’m sorry, “Hudson Lowe did a lot of good but the fact is that Napoleon Bonaparte and the Fucking East India Company both hated him so jot that down” is not the own against Hudson Lowe’s partisans that Martineau thinks it is
I’m like, if the East India company hates you…
…good?
#hudson lowe#napoleon#to clarify: Lowe was not NEARLY as enthusiastic about ending slavery as he is often made out to be#he’s a 19th century white man and he is as shitty in that regard as you could expect#but Martineau seems to think that Lowe was an enthusiastic abolitionist (rather than an eh and hypocritical one)#and he still thinks ‘ending slavery’ isn’t enough to make up for *checks notes*#wait lemme check notes here#it’s not enough to make up for making napoleon feel bad once or twice by#…addressing him as genera rather than majesty#okay. okay. okay. yeah seems reasonable#I—I tell ya. I tell ya!!

something, someday — ty dellandrea/wyatt johnston; rated e; 57.9k; written for @notacowfest tags: background robotter; loss of virginity; ty's wyatt johnston exclusive virginity kink; they’re just tenderly working their way around the bases. like bros.
Johnny didn’t say anything in response. Ty glanced over at the next light, took in the way it illuminated the flush to Johnny’s cheeks, the way he was worrying his bottom lip. He looked, like, embarrassed, which set Ty on some kind of edge. He hadn’t wanted to make Johnny embarrassed; he’d wanted to tease Johnny into making fun of Otter with him. And really, mostly, he’d wanted to see what had made Johnny go so quiet at the bar. Now was probably as good a time as any to pick away at that.
#hockey rpf#hrpf#rpf talk#z:fic#guys. guys. i did not intend to write nearly 58 thousand words for this prompt but Here We Are.#like 40% of it was written after july 19th.#i hope you all enjoy my accidental dellywyatt novel <3

While the Blink 182 album was disappointing, the Green Day one is gonna be baller!
#very excited for the 19th for the green day album#so far it sounds great!!#very much their typical sound but obvs they have figured out how to keep it relevant over the years#blink 182's sound is starting to dwindle#they don't sound like their old sound despite having all original members again#and i get keeping up with the times but there is obvs a way to do that for nearly 30 years like green day#anyway just more of my shitty rant about blink 182#they are my favorite band and i'm so irked!!#kfi txt#blink 182#green day
