#OTD in Irish History | 15 October:
1582 – Pope Gregory reforms the calendar introduced by Julius Caesar in 45BCE: 4 October is followed by 15 October. However, the reform will not be implemented in Britain and Ireland till 1752. 1690 – After taking Cork on 28 September, Marlbourough takes Kinsale for the Williamites, who now control Munster. 1763 – Birth of United Irish leader, Lord Edward Fitzgerald, at Carton House, Co…

AMAZING. So, if you'll indulge me in a little local politics for a moment, the context to this is that Lough Neagh, the largest freshwater lake in the UK - and the source of a large proportion of Northern Ireland's drinking water - is horribly polluted with blue-green algae, agricultural run-off, you name it, it's in the drink. This, and I'll not mince words, because vampires need a good verbal staking, is because some parasite of an Earl who's barely even been to Northern Ireland owns the bed of the Lough, and has profited (e.g. via dredging operations) from letting it get into this state.
It's worth noting that, as well as currently being hopping mad about the state of Lough Neagh, the Northern Ireland public have always been very good at celebrating Hallowe'en, so adding a peripatetic cursed doll to our unique cultural traditions at this time of year is very apt move...

[I.D: A colourless drawing of a mermaid and an otter. Both are lying on their stomachs and turned towards each other. The mermaid is pictured from the front, turned just slightly while the otter is turned to face her directly. The mermaid is resting on her elbows. Her tail rises up from behind her. She is smiling. End I.D]
I read a book about myths from Lough Neagh and it's Mermay so

I will refer to all bodies of water as a lough.
freshwater and big? Lough.
saltwater and small? Lough.
just a really wide river? Lough.
The ocean is just one really big lough and we are just islands in it.
wtf is a lake? I don’t care if it’s a bay, it’s just a tidal lough. glacier? That’s right it’s a frozen lough.

St Meriasek’s Day / St Colman’s Day
Tumblr media
Miners Enjoying “Croust Time”, East Pool Mine, 1893. Source: Mac Waters/ cornwallforever.co.uk
Today is the feast day of both St Meriasek and St Colman. Meriasek is the patron saint of tin miners and therefore historically a very significant figure in Cornwall. As late as the 1890s, clay images of the saint were put up at the mine’s entrance by the men for good luck. At the beginning of each shift the miners would intone Meriasek we pray thee to invoke his protection. Also, if the miners came across a snail during their work, they would drop some lantern wax on the creature “for luck”. What the snails thought of these encounters is not clear.
St Colman had a well dedicated to him at Cranfield Church, on the shore of Lough Neagh near Castletown in County Antrim. The well offered the usual curative remedies in return for coins. The well was cleaned in the 1970s and a fine collection of deposited coins was discovered. Allegedly, despite it being bad luck to steal the well’s offerings, one of the workmen helped himself to some. He was killed by a car on his way home.

Took a picture of Lough Neagh, it is a bit off for me but I still think it's a good one. Ireland is very beautiful, I'm hoping to go to Scotland in the summer holidays! 🎉

Clough Mór and Fionn mac Cumhaill
Fionn mac Cumhaill threw most of the big stones that are littered across the north of Ireland. He was also responsible for creating the Giants Causeway, the Isle of Man and Lough Neagh and gives his name to the Cooley mountains across the Lough. Fionn mac Cumhaill pursued a wild boar across Slieve Foy mountain in Carlingford and slew it. He cooked it on top of the smouldering Volcano that had…

This is the inevitable consequences of unchecked agricultural pollution. A pattern that has occurred time and time again and will continue to do so as long as profits are put before nature. This isn't a case of 'lessons to learned' - we've seen this happen over and over and over. We know the process, we know the warning signs, we can see it coming like a gathering storm while ministers and officials turn a blind eye, too focussed on the cash their mega-rich donors line their pockets with. I was lucky enough to visit Lough Neagh while volunteering for the RSPB at nearby Portmore Lough. The scale of Lough Neagh really took my breath away, it felt so unfamiliar and striking to have the far shore of a lake an entire horizon away. It's the largest freshwater body in the British Isles and a truly awe-inspiring place. To have somewhere that should be the jewel in Northern Ireland's crown polluted and poisoned to this extent is a tragedy beyond words. If the DUP had even a trace of a conscience, they should hang their heads in fucking shame at what they've killed.
Please reblog the shit out of these articles.
I’d say you can thank the mutton-brained inbreds in the DUP for this. Allowing farmers to spew shite into rivers and lakes.
Reblog the shit out of this.
