Clough Mór and Fionn mac Cumhaill
Fionn mac Cumhaill threw most of the big stones that are littered across the north of Ireland. He was also responsible for creating the Giants Causeway, the Isle of Man and Lough Neagh and gives his name to the Cooley mountains across the Lough. Fionn mac Cumhaill pursued a wild boar across Slieve Foy mountain in Carlingford and slew it. He cooked it on top of the smouldering Volcano that had…

Here are some companies that strongly support Israel (but are not Boycott targets). There is no ethical consumption under capitalism and boycotting is a political strategy - not a moral one. If you did try to boycott every supporter of Israel you would struggle to survive because every major company supports Israel (as a result of attempting to keep the US economy afloat), that being said, the ones that are being boycotted by masses and not already on the organic boycott list are coloured red.

A castle fit for a President?
On the day when the President of the United States of America is due to visit the historic town of Carlingford we have, serendipitously, a fine Imperial plate image of King John's Castle in that town! The Cooley peninsula and Carlingford Lough are some of the hidden gems of the island with views of the Mourne mountains and south Ulster across the water and ready access to the hinterland on both sides.

Drive-By Truckers Solo Preview
Tumblr media
Patterson Hood
BY JORDAN MAINZER
I'm not sure whether it was planned this way or a mere coincidence, but the two principal songwriters of rock legends Drive-By Truckers are playing separate solo shows in the Chicago area over the next couple nights. Tonight and tomorrow, Patterson Hood graces the stage at Fitzgerald's, while tomorrow, Mike Cooley gives a set at the Hideout. Presumably, each will largely perform stripped down versions of their own Truckers tunes.
Tumblr media
Mike Cooley
It's been a big year for Drive-By Truckers even though they haven't released a new record. Instead, they gave us The Complete Dirty South (New West), a sort-of director's cut of their 2004 opus detailing what they'd previously called "the duality of the Southern thing:" the simultaneous pride and shame of being from the South, the grey areas of what it means to truly be a rebel in a society that actively hates anybody who isn't a rich white man. The Complete Dirty South contains newly sequenced audio, three additional tracks, four remixes, and updated vocals from Hood on two songs. The complete package serves to emphasize even more the desperation of ordinary folks, as well as the moral ambiguity of both the lawmakers and lawbreakers that make up the region's history. On "Goode's Field Road", which would eventually be rerecorded for Brighter Than Creation's Dark, a man kills himself knowing that his family would be able to afford to eat with the insurance money, the character a more hopeless counterpart to the suicidal ideation-filled narrator of the ass-ripping "Lookout Mountain". Jason Isbell's stunning acoustic slow burn "TVA" is a reflection on the Tennessee Valley Authority's dams, how they've simultaneously damaged local ecosystems but given his ancestors jobs and himself some precious teenage memories. As always, with the Truckers, both things are true at once.
Ultimately, though, The Complete Dirty South is us an opportunity to listen with 2023 ears to a 2004 album that's truer than ever. The rich still get away with doing illegal things ("Where the Devil Don't Stay"), increasingly intense weather patterns still devastate the poorest of communities ("Tornadoes"), and government austerity policies still force people to work longer hours, for lower pay (the incendiary "Putting People on the Moon".) When Hood sings, "Motherfucker in the White House said a change was comin' round / But I'm workin' at the Walmart, Mary Alice in the ground," it's the much more realistic, downtrodden version of "Meet the new boss, same as the old boss," a sharpshooting lyricist's analysis of the devastating consequences of incrementalism, let alone inaction.
Tumblr media
Drive-By Truckers
Perhaps the songs on the album most subtly revolutionary are Hood's one-two punch of tales around Buford Pusser, a McNairy County sheriff who launched a one-man war on vices all across the Mississippi-Tennessee state line, and Cooley's "Cottonseed". "The Boys From Alabama" and "The Buford Stick" tell "the other side of that story," the non-heroizing version told in Walking Tall, the criminals' view of the policeman as someone not demonstrating moral high ground but simply disallowing people the opportunity to make money by moonshining and distract themselves from the pain of life by gambling and drinking. Cooley has said "Cottonseed" is inspired by a local career criminal hired to give a speech at a church, them intending to scare congregants into law-abiding lives, who in a twist of fate displays no remorse for his actions. "I've put more law men in the ground than Alabama put cottonseed," he sings, the titular image a brilliant encapsulation of the realization that, in U.S. history, state-sanctioned work has often been crueler than what many criminals have done. "Say what you have to say to shut their Bibles and their mouths," he continues, "If they was to tie a noose they'd have to lay their Bibles down." Drive-By Truckers don't just make you empathize with society's cast-offs but posit that authority itself doesn't listen to the moral doctrines they're supposed to exemplify. For Southern rockers to do that to a largely white audience in 2023 would make headlines; Hood, Cooley and company were ahead of their time.

Raven Lunatic replied to my Celtic Music Magazine request: "I have been going back and listening to episodes of your podcast I missed! Walked in Baltimore St Padraig’s Parade on Sunday. Will be starting the feast day with a Mass then full Irish breakfast!!"
Adam Young replied: "Hi Marc -  -
I'm usually working while listening, doing graphic design work or something similar...or just sitting and concentrating on the music itself.
I've got two gigs on St. Patrick's Day, so I'll be out in the pubs (2 - 5 pm and 8 - 10 pm) in Sydney, NS, and joining a fellow artist (who you've featured recently), Mary Beth Carty, at her session in the morning.
That's also how I'm celebrating the culture through music this St. Patrick's Day!  Our focus is more Scottish music, but we'll be throwing as much Irish into the mix as we possibly can...and staying away from green beer and pots of gold and leprechauns...
Best of luck on the show(s)! Thanks"
Roger replied: "Greetings Marc from Kendal UK  its snowing. been making a Shepherds Pie for tea while listening to the last episode with the odd stop to practise my bodhran against a song... i need lots of practice...
keep up your good work. your podcast is essential listening especially if you have a ceiling to wall paper. best regards"

Drew Holcomb & The Neighbors Release New Single “Find Your People”
Tumblr media
Drew Holcomb & The Neighbors release “Find Your People” – stream via your preferred DSP HERE. A joyful rallying cry, the single is the latest from the band’s forthcoming new studio album Strangers No More due out June 7th via Magnolia Music. “Find Your People” comes with the official music video – watch HERE, follows last month’s finger-picked folk song “Fly” (watch video HERE), and is the fourth to be released ahead of the Strangers No More LP. “Life is hard. It’s a lot harder when you go it alone. “Find Your People” is a folk anthem about how we need each other. Part of the river of this record is about how to navigate the chaos of economic uncertainty, family drama, political division, and the general untethering that so many of us feel. It’s about finding who you trust, who know you, who are there for you in times of trouble, who can call your bluff and tell you the truth, who will stand with you no matter what. I have been lucky enough to have a lot of those people in my life and I know I couldn’t live without them.” – Drew Holcomb on “Find Your People”
Tumblr media
Strangers No More is Drew Holcomb & The Neighbors ninth album and follows the band’s critically acclaimed 2019 LP Dragons. On the new album, Holcomb celebrates the sense of togetherness as he and his longtime bandmates – Nathan Dugger (guitar), Rich Brinsfield (bass), Will Sayles (drums), and Ian Miller (keys) – rejoice in one another’s presence after a long hiatus due to the pandemic. Strangers No More was recorded over eight inspired days in Asheville, NC at Echo Mountain Studios with Cason Cooley (Ben Rector, Ingrid Michaelson) producing. They focused on live-in-the-studio performances that showcased the band’s chemistry and camaraderie, capturing the bulk of each song — including vocals, instrumental textures, and solos — in real time. “We’d do eight to ten performances of a single song, looking for the revelatory moment,” Holcomb remembers. “The goal was to prove an expanded vision of who we are and what we do.” In addition to releasing a new full-length studio album this year and making their return to Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival, the band is celebrating the 10-Year Anniversary of one of their most beloved albums, 2013’s Good Light. The decade that followed saw Drew Holcomb & The Neighbors release five consecutive albums that peaked in the upper reaches of the Billboard charts. Also in that time period, Holcomb launched the incredibly popular Moon River Music Festival, an annual event that is heading into its eighth year (and fifth in Chattanooga, TN’s Coolidge Park) this coming September 9th and 10th. 2023’s lineup featuring Hozier, Caamp, Nickel Creek, First Aid Kit, Marcus King and more (see full lineup HERE) was announced last week and sold out in mere days! Case of William Alchesay
No. 20440
On this 4 day of June, 1926, at Whiteriver county of Navajo, State of Arizona before me, G. M. Milburn, an inspector of the Bureau of Pensions, personally appeared William Alchesay, who, being by me first duly sworn to answer truly all interrogatories propounded to him during this special examination of aforesaid claim for pension, deposes and says:
I am a claimant for pension.  I have heretofore testified, My Indian name is Chuzzin.  I was known by that name when I was a boy, was so called by that name by all Indians when I was a scout and I am this day called Chuzzin by the Indians.  I was given the name "Alchesay" (or similar spelling), by old man Cooley (dead), a white man.  I was known under the name "Alchesay" (or similar spelling) throughout all of my service as scout.  I am now known, to the white man, as Alchesay, and most, if not all, of the Indians on this reservation know me as Alchesay.  Yet, however, when an Indian makes any reference to me, he will always refer to me as Chuzzin, in speaking with another Indian.  In talking with a white man, they will understand the name "Alchesay" as referring to me.  Many of the more intelligent Indians will refer to me as Alchesay when speaking with a white man.
I have never, in all my life, known another Indian by the name of Alchesay, nor have I ever known an Indian by the name of "Alchisea" (as variously pronounced by Inspector and Interpreter).  I am a very old man, and as a leader of my people I have known practically every Indian who has ever lived in this vicinity.  I have never known an Indian, scout or other, having the name Alchesay or Alchisea (or similar pronunciation).  All during my service I was either 1st Sgt. or Sgt.  If I ever held the rank of Private or Corpl. I have no recollection of it.  When I enlisted the first time, General Crook was the white officer.  I do not know the name of another white officer.  I do not speak nor understand the English language, and cannot carry on conversation with the white man, other than through an interpreter, except for a very few

simple words (but no complete sentence), and I did not learn the names of my white officers, other than General Crook with whom I was associated for so many years.
The first time I enlisted, I was made 1st Sgt.  That was at a time when the Indians below San Carlos had killed a number of white men and stole many horses.  Another bunch of Indians over by Ft. Grant committed similar acts.
I was serving as a scout at the time "Chies" was a chief.  He was called "Cochise" by the white man.  (Note: Cochise died in 1874).  This Chief had 2 sons, Taza and Nachies.  Taza took Chies' place after he died, and later Nachies was made Chief.
During the forepart of my service, I recall that we had a gight [fight] "down in the valley".  I do not know name of place.  Many Indians were killed at that time, and we captured a number of the enemy.
There are very few of the old scouts living who served with me when I enlisted the first time.  So far as I now recall, the following are the only ones alive, living on this reservation;
Che ne to en (20994, Cheney),  It e gay ah, now called General Crook (20465, Crook Danford),  Yaz nan cha (Jack),  Yuen (John or Johnny).  It is my recollection that all 4 of these were with me in same Co, on my second enlistement, and after that, I recall that Yas nan cha (Jack) was the only one who remained.  Then, later on I recall that Yuen (John) was with me again.  I am unable to be more accurate, only to my many terms of service.  My brother, Esh kay clenny (dead), who was called "Mike" also served with me, and my recollection is that he was with me on my second enlistment, and he continued to serve with me until he was finally discharged.  I am quite certain that all of these scouts were with me before the death of "Cochise".  I remember another, Ilth to eh (or El to ay) who was with me during my early service, but just when he first enlisted, I am unacertain.  I think it was after Cochise died, but do not know how long after, whether 1,2,3,4 years.  I am unable to figure the time in that way.
No, I never deserted at any time.  No, I never ran away and then return and surrender.  I remember one time that General Crook told me to stay at Forrest Dale and watch the Indians over there, as they
