Happy Monday y’all! The Scotland winter broke me. Scotland: 1, Crystal: 0 I’ve given up on finishing the NE250 loop. It got too cold in the mountains, specifically the Cairngorm Mountains and it was absolutely unbearable. I woke up late from the daily exhaustion, the sun sets at 3:30pm so I barely had daylight to explore, and temperatures dropped at sunset. It’s just an endless cycle. I questioned why I was riding the loop anymore. I no longer enjoyed it and was only forcing myself to do it only for the “accomplishment factor”. Forcing myself to finish the NE250 loop would have made me hate riding this leg, and I didn’t want to feel this way about my expedition. I went back and forth on it so many times and tried to reason with myself. “It’s only 12 more hours in 28-32F/ -2-0C temperatures.” No. Just no. I couldn’t justify the pain. I’ve been doing it for weeks now. So I moved on. And I’m so much happier! 😺 That’s actually something I’m working on. That it’s okay if I don’t finish something I say I’m going to, but that I tried my best. I definitely tried my best. I have the crazy eyes to prove it 👀 Just because we fail at things doesn’t mean we’re failures. The important lesson is we tried our best and are more resilient because of it. I’m just back from a very busy weekend in and around the town of Fraserburgh on Scotland’s north east coast! A short drive from the town you’ll find this bizarre place, Pitullie Castle. Marooned in the middle of a very large mud field, it feels like its own inland island, an experience that only shots from above can do justice to.

Imagine you’re exhausted, cold, tired and hungry and you see this giant bridge in the distance. My eyes got so big seeing this mega structure that it reenergized me to finish the day 🏍 The Cullen Viaduct was built from 1884-1886 and was a railway that connected Portsoy and Elgin. Some parts of it are still in use today! Well, Freyja and I took Nathan camping in the Scotland winter. Nathan’s probably like, “What are you thinking woman?! We’re supposed to go to nice warm places!” And Freyja’s like “I BEEN told her!” They’re plotting against me now. Hahaha 😹 Would we ever do that again? No. Would I recommend it? No, but I might if your gear is waterproof, 4 season, you don’t mind packing away wet gear and you like seeing your cold breath in your tent 🙀 But at least I can say I tried it, gave it a chance and didn’t enjoy it versus never tried it at all. Happy Monday and hello from Ballater, Scotland where I will start the NE250! The NE250 is a scenic tourist route that follows much of the Eastern coastline of Scotland giving gorgeous views of the North Sea, while also cutting through the majestic Cairngorm Mountains. I honestly didn’t know this route existed until another rider told me about this. Now I HAVE to do it! This is why I love not planning on my moto expedition. It gives me the freedom to ride wherever I want, leaving things open ended if I want to spend more time in a place or with new friends I meet, or if I need to hide from the weather or recover for longer. It’s hard to fully comprehend this lifestyle until you experience this for yourself. We can change if we want to. I was a planner once and now I’m existing without any plans.
