Midhope Castle, also known as Lallybroch, home of Jamie Fraser (Outlander).

The property was owned by the Martin family in 1478, and they had a castle here, but passed to the Livingstones soon afterwards. James Lindsay, Lord Lindsay, had a ratification of 1592 for the lands of Midhope, with the tower and fortalice thereof. Midhope belonged to the Drummonds of Midhope, who were in possession during part of the 16th and 17th centuries, and Alexander Drummond of Midhope remodelled the tower in 1587 and his initials with those of his wife Marjorie Bruce are on a former lintel now above a gateway. Alexander Drummond of Midhope is on record in the 1640s, then Sir Robert Drummond of Midhope in 1647 and 1661.

The property passed to the Livingstones in 1664, and the intials of George Livingstone, 3rd Earl of Linlithgow are on a lintel, then went to the Hopes in 1678 and they remodelled the building. In 1710 the place was described as ‘a fine towerhouse with excellent gardens, one of the seats of the Earls of Hopetoun’. Midhope Castle was used to house farm workers after the building of nearby Hopetoun House, and in 1851 53 people lived here, but it was later abandoned and is now semi-derelict, although the outside was consolidated in 1988. The castle lies on the extensive Hopetoun estate.

Castle Fraser, Aberdeenshire. Castle Fraser was started in the mid-fourteenth century as a three storey rectangular Tower House. The surrounding lands, known as Muchall, were originally the property of Alexander Stewart, Earl of Mar. However, when he died in 1435 without a legitimate heir, the estates passed to the Crown. It was James II (1437-60) who granted both Muchall and Stoneywood to Thomas Fraser in the mid-fifteenth century. It was most probably Thomas who built the Tower House on the site which became known as Muchall-in-Mar Castle. The castle was substantially upgraded in the sixteenth century by Michael Fraser, Sixth Laird of Fraser. He built two new towers on diagonally opposite corners of the existing Tower House to form a Z-plan castle. Work started on the project in 1575 but progress was slow and it was still incomplete when he died in 1588 leaving his son, Andrew Fraser, to complete the build in 1636. Andrew was elevated to Lord Fraser in 1633. In 1897 Frederick Mackenzie Fraser died childless and his widow, faced with the extensive costs of maintaining the property, sold it in 1921 to Weetman Pearson, Viscount Cowdray. In the 1950s some work was undertaken to remove sections of the nineteenth century modifications. The castle was gifted to the National Trust for Scotland in 1976. Amazing photo from @sergejk87 . . . Have you heard the legend of the Bled Castle 🇸🇮? Around 1500 AD the administrator of the Bled Castle was Hartman Kreigh, who was not a kind master. Farmers complained about the encroachment on their rights and brutal oppression to the bishop and the king. One day Kreigh disappeared without a trace. There were rumours that he had been killed by robbers. For all we know, farmers may have taken the justice into their own hands, but nothing was ever proven. In short, Kreigh was never to be seen again. His wife Poliksena, who also ruled with a firm hand, squeezing the last dime from her subordinates, grieved for him deeply. In her grief, she collected all the gold and silver she had stored in her chests. From the gold, he had a bell cast for the chapel on the Bled Island. When the boatmen were taking the bell to the island, a storm broke out, sinking the boat, the boatmen and the bell. But occasionally, the bell sunk in the mud can be heard ringing from the depths of the lake. Devastated, Poliksena left the castle and went to a convent in Rome. When the Pope heard her sad story, he had a new bell made and sent it to the Island. Orchardton Tower, Dumfries and Galloway.

Orchardton Tower is thought to have been built by John Cairns around 1455. The Cairns family had previously served the Stewart royal dynasty and the Earls of Douglas in various administrative, military, domestic, and diplomatic capacities.

They are an interesting example of a family with good social connections who acted as gentleman-servants for higher-ranking dynasties, perhaps because they had only relatively modest revenues of their own.

Their fortunes changed when they took the side of King James II against the Earl of Douglas in the 1450s and gained the lands of Orchardton at much reduced rent as a result.

By 1558, the lairdship was divided between three heiresses and the estate fragmented. A local nobleman, Sir Robert Maxwell, gradually bought up all the pieces to reunite the lairdship for himself.

We don’t know why John Cairns chose to build his tower on a circular plan. It is likely that it was as much a talking point among his contemporaries as it is today. It is a unique survival as a near free-standing late medieval circular tower.

Craigievar Castle or the „Pink Castle“ near Alford, Aberdeenshire.

Craigievar Castle was built in the Scottish Baronial style in the 16th century. This iconic tower house is one of the best preserved and the most loved castles in Scotland. Its exterior remains virtually unchanged since William Forbes completed it in 1626.

Craigievar was the Forbes family home until the 1960s. National Trust for Scotland is now responsible for the castle.

Castle Tioram, Loch Moidart.

The ruins of Castle Tioram stand on the tidal island of Eilean Tioram near the point at which the River Shiel flows into Loch Moidart. Castle Tioram is pronounced „Cheerum“ as far as I know.

The castle was the traditional home of the MacDonalds of Clanranald. Castle Tioram was built in the early 13th century on a rock on the tidal island. It is very possible that there was a much older fortress before but the castle was mentioned for the first time in 1372.

Castle Tioram was recorded as being in a poor condition when occupied by a garrison of government troops during the 1715 Jacobite uprising. It was recaptured by Allan of Moidart, who then, it is said, set fire to it to prevent its future use, before departing to meet his death at the Battle of Sheriffmuir.

Stalker del castello, Loch Laich. Si crede che Castle Stalker – in gaelico Stalcaire, che significa cacciatore o falconiere – fosse originariamente il sito di un Fortalice (un piccolo edificio fortificato) appartenente ai MacDougall quando erano signori di Lorn, e costruito intorno al 1320. I MacDougalls persero il loro titolo dopo la loro sconfitta da parte di re Bruce a Brander Pass nel 1308, ma lo riconquistò per un periodo dopo il 1328. Intorno al 1388 la Signoria di Lorn passò agli Stewart, le terre tra cui Castle Stalker. Intorno al 1620 il castello passò nelle mani dei Campbell di Airds a seguito di una scommessa da ubriaco del settimo capo Stewart, Duncan, in cambio di un wherry a otto remi. Gli Stewart di Appin, sotto Stewart di Ardsheal, riconquistarono il castello nel 1689 quando uscirono con re Giacomo VII (altrimenti Giacomo II) contro re Guglielmo, ma dopo la sconfitta nella battaglia di Dunkeld il castello fu nuovamente incamerato dai Campbell. Gli Stewart sotto Ardsheal si rifiutarono di consegnarlo quando fu poi assediato dai Campbell per diversi mesi fino a quando Ardsheal non ottenne una resa onorevole nel 1690. Al tempo del 1745 Rising Castle Stalker era tenuto dai Campbell con una guarnigione di circa 59 truppe governative. Dopo la battaglia di Culloden nel 1746 il castello fu utilizzato dalle forze governative come centro locale dove i membri del clan dovevano cedere le armi.
