The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) on Wednesday filed a criminal case against Rhea Chakraborty and others to probe their alleged dealings in banned drugs, an instance emerging from an investigation being conducted into the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput, officials said. They said sections 20, 22, 27, and 29 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS) have been pressed in the complaint filed by the federal anti-drugs agency on an official reference received from the Enforcement Directorate (ED). Rhea Chakraborty and Sushant Singh Rajput These sections under the NDPS pertain to punishment for contravention in relation to cannabis plant and cannabis (20), punishment for contravention in relation to psychotropic substances (22), punishment for consumption of any narcotic drug or psychotropic substance (27) and punishment for abetment and criminal conspiracy (29). The alleged narcotics dealing links are connected to the criminal probe being conducted in the death of Rajput, 34, who was found hanging at his duplex flat in Mumbai's Bandra area on 14 June. Officials said NCB Director General (NCB) Rakesh Asthana held two rounds of meetings and after going through the evidence available and obtaining legal opinion, he directed his officials to file a case. They said a special team under the supervision of NCB Deputy Director (operations) KPS Malhotra has been constituted and officials of the agency from its unit in Delhi and Mumbai will carry out the investigation. The agency is soon expected to summon Rhea, flatmate, and creative manager of Rajput, Siddharth Pithani, his house and business managers, accountant, his domestic helps, and some more people for questioning. The NCB is now the third federal investigative agency probing this case apart from the ED and the CBI. The ED, which is probing a money-laundering angle into the death of Rajput, has questioned Rhea twice earlier and has obtained "deleted WhatsApp messages" after a forensic examination of her phone. The deleted messages, they said, allegedly indicate dealings in banned drugs and chats about the procurement and consumption of these drugs that include cannabis. Rhea has been questioned by the ED about these suspect drug deal messages deleted from her phone and her statement on these allegations has been recorded by it under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), officials said. It is understood that the "deleted WhatsApp messages" pertain to Rhea purportedly talking to her friends and some of Rajput's domestic helpers about certain banned narcotics. The NCB, they said, will probe the possible "source, trade, consumption and handling" of these banned drugs and their possible links to Rajput as well as his death, they said. Rhea's lawyer Satish Manehsinde had vehemently denied the drug link allegations made against the 28-year-old actor on Tuesday. "Rhea has never consumed drugs in her life ever. She is ready for a blood test," Maneshinde had said. Check out the post Rhea has never consumed drugs in her life ever, said her lawyer https://t.co/V8rkCYiZ9d — THE WEEK (@TheWeekLive) August 25, 2020 The actor is the prime accused in this case and has stated in her petition before the Supreme Court that she was in a live-in relationship with Rajput. The ED had shared these alleged narcotics-related chats with the CBI too that is probing Rajput's death. * A collection of Suicide prevention helpline numbers are available here. Please reach out if you or anyone you know is in need of support. Bollywood star Deepika Padukone questioned in India drugs probe
Top Bollywood star Deepika Padukone has been questioned by India's narcotics agency in an escalating drugs probe following the death of young actor Sushant Singh Rajput earlier this year.
Padukone, 34, arrived at the Narcotics Control Board's (NCB) office in Mumbai on Saturday after receiving a summons earlier this week while on a shooting stint in the western beach resort of Goa. Media reports say no drugs have been seized from her.
The NCB started the Bollywood drug probe after the death of Rajput, 34, whose body was found at his Mumbai residence in June.

- Filmfare (@filmfare) September 26, 2020
According to the local media, Padukone was being questioned on whether she procured banned drugs for consumption following an interception of phone messages regarding making queries with local contacts.
She is among more than a dozen Bollywood professionals who have been questioned by the NCB in the past two weeks over the movie industry's alleged links with drug peddlers and cartels.
Padukone's manager Karishma Prakash was questioned on Friday.
Earlier this week, TV channel TimesNow broadcast sections of a WhatsApp conversation about procuring hash, alleging that the two people chatting were Padukone and her manager.
At least three other Bollywood actresses - Sara Ali Khan, Shraddha Kapoor and Rakul Preet Singh - have also been summoned by the NCB.
Kapoor and Khan, both daughters of famous Bollywood actors, appeared before the agency on Saturday, while Singh's statement was recorded on Friday.
Filmmaker Karan Johar, who has also been a target of TV channels and social media users since Rajput's death, on Friday said in a statement that allegations of narcotics being consumed at a party hosted by him in July last year at his residence were “false and baseless ”.
Johar's response came after an old video from a star-studded party at his residence surfaced on social media.
While an investigation into Rajput's death is continuing, the saga has morphed into a probe by authorities into drug-taking within Bollywood, a multibillion-dollar film industry.
Rajput's death also sparked a media frenzy with India's news channels speculating that his former girlfriend, actress Rhea Chakraborty, drove him to kill himself with narcotics and even black magic.
Rajput's family disputed reports that he suffered from depression and openly accused Chakraborty, 28, of stealing his money and harassing him.
The actress, who denies any wrongdoing, was arrested earlier this month for allegedly buying cannabis for Rajput. Her arrest came after she and her family were hounded for months by the media.

No bail for Showik, HC says he’s in contact with dealers | Hindi Movie News
New Post has been published on https://jordarnews.in/no-bail-for-showik-hc-says-hes-in-contact-with-dealers-hindi-movie-news/
No bail for Showik, HC says he’s in contact with dealers | Hindi Movie News
MUMBAI: It remains jail, not bail, for Showik Chakraborty as the high court, denying him liberty, cited as one reason his alleged “direct contact with drug dealers” and actual transactions with them. “At this stage the NCB has sufficient material to show he is a part (of) drug dealers engaged in illicit traffic,” said the HC. “He appears to be an important link in the chain of drug dealers,” said Justice Sarang Kotwal, rejecting his bail plea. For Rhea there were no such allegations, the HC said.
The HC found monetary transactions reflected in Showik’s account for buying weed. He was “facilitating procurement of drugs from one party for supplying them to Sushant Singh Rajput. He was involved in illicit trafficking of illegal trade of drugs,” said the HC. Showik is connected allegedly to co-accused Anuj Keshwani through Abdel Parihar- whose bail was also rejected- from whom commercial quantity was recovered, and hence the strict bail provision of a twin-test to see if he is ‘not guilty’ and ‘won’t commit any offence on release’ kicks in, HC said.
“Considering the fact that he is part of a large network, it is not possible to observe that he is not likely to commit such offences in future,” said the HC of Showik. Though also booked, like Rhea, under the grave offence of financing illicit traffic under Section 27A of NDPS Act, the HC said it was “not necessary to decide this issue at this stage.” But at the same time, the HC said, “Section 27A will not be attracted even against the present applicant (Showik) so far as procurement of drugs for Sushant’s consumption and their payment is concerned, nor can he be said to have harboured Sushant.”
The HC said probe is still on. It, however, added Showik has a right to seek bail from the NDPS court once investigation is over, and its observations are only restricted to the order at this stage. When he files for bail, the NDPS court has to decide uninfluenced by the HC order.
Holding all NDPS offences to be ‘non-bailable’ on the basis of a 1999 SC ruling, HC said “if an accused claims bail as of right in case of possession of small quantity, no investigation can be carried out to find the source and trade of contraband. This defeats the object of the Act.” The judge said, “One cannot overlook the prevailing situation in today’s society. Offenders having small quantities expose themselves to immediate arrest. They cannot claim bail as a right.” Neither could Showik, said HC. But it added, “The arresting officer” has to be mindful of Act’s “benevolent provisions” and its “reformative approach as well” .
