Geometry of a Triangle
I found a few hours of quiet time and what better way to spend them than to revisit that beautiful thing called, “Triangle” ...
It’s a standalone and I’ll be tagging @today-in-fic ...
:)
&&&&&&&&&&
“Oh, brother.”
With that statement, she pushed herself off the bed rail and turned, click-heeling back into the hallway, running into a clump of boss and unwashed boys, “how is he?”
“He’s delusional.” Moving past them, she hit the down button on the elevator when she reached it, “he needs time, rest, and probably another CT scan, which I will schedule for him once I get downstairs.”
The four of them, following like obedient dogs, got on the elevator with her and just as the doors were closing, “damn it. I forgot my keys in there.” Recklessly flinging her arm in between twin metal deathtraps, then stepping out once they’d reopened, “why don’t you guys go and I’ll call you if anything changes?”
Not one to question her, ever, they said their goodbyes and disappeared. Once the elevator had definitely left the floor, she took a deep breath, wondering if collapse against the wall would be appropriate given the amount of stress still choking her system. Why was he always trying to kill her, inadvertently mind you, but still, every time he left his apartment, he put her in panic mode.
She really fucking hated panic mode.
Taking a minute to collect herself while staring out the window at absolutely no view at all, hospital expansion building blocking the view of what was probably a very pretty neighborhood.
Whatever.
She took her time going back to his room, companions not fluttering around her, peppering with questions, irritating her with endless regurgitation, explanation and exaltation of the exploits of her thankfully not drowned partner.
And Skinner just needed to go away in general; she’d kissed him in the elevator and now couldn’t look him in the eye given mortal embarrassment.
She needed a vacation.
&&&&&&&&&
Finally, many deep breaths later, she was back at his door, numbered 342 in the grand scheme but from her last count, it was hospital room number 206, give or take; she also counted emergency room curtained off areas as rooms so her count might be a little skewed.
Walking back in without knocking, she thought maybe he’d be asleep and she could do her thing and go home to warm bed, fragrant bath, cup of hot chocolate, not necessarily in that order. He wasn’t asleep, however, instead looking up at her, tracking her as she carefully shut the door, turned, crossed her arms, “I was beginning to wonder if you’d be back.”
“I had to get rid of them before I could …” her voice cracked here, tears rushing to the surface, falling freely down her cheeks in under a second.
Mulder tried to get up but was forced back down by gravity and dizziness, so instead, he reached out his hand, “come here. I’m sorry. I hate seeing you cry.”
“If you wouldn’t do such stupid things, maybe I wouldn’t have to cry.” Swiping her face, the torrent already slowing to a trickle, she sniffed hard, “maybe you’re like a puppy. You need a good swat every now and then in order to learn not to put me through this crap.”
Beside his bed by now, he reached his hand out, hooking it in the pocket of her jacket, “I have never intentionally set out to make you cry. I swear.”
Growling at him, she dried her face one last time with her fingers, looking down at him, “did you really say earlier that you loved me? How many drugs are you on, if you don’t mind me asking?”
“You should know. You’re the doc, doc.”
Moving to see his chart again, she zoned in on the narcotics area, perusing then sifting through her memory, “looks like plenty. More than enough to say all kinds of incriminating things.”
Looking at her sheepishly, “did I really say ‘I love you’ though?”
And her heart jumped then sank, bobbed back to the surface and sank again, “you don’t remember?” He looked innocently guilty and she tilted her head at him, “I won’t hold it against you then.”
“Thanks.”
Moving back to his side, she pulled the chair over, slotting her feet in the undercarriage of the bed and settling back, head comfortable after a moment, Mulder’s fingers wiggling in her direction, his discreet invite to hold his hand while they fell asleep.
She both hated and loved their routines.
“I really am sorry I always make you cry.”
“I can’t imagine this life without you, Mulder, such as it is.” Thinking back to all the times she’d cried for him, both inside and out, “I have often wished that my stress levels weren’t congruent to the production of my tear ducts but they are and we have both learned to live with that.”
“I still hate that I make you cry.”
Squeezing his fingers, “go to sleep, Mulder. I’ll see you when you wake up.”
&&&&&&&&
Ten minutes later, she expected him to be deep in dreamland but looking in his direction once she realized she didn’t hear his whistle-snoring nose, she saw his eyes open, staring intently at her, studying form and function of his Scully, “why aren’t you asleep yet?”
“Trying to ignore my headache while I think about a few things.”
Dusk was dropping outside, their room growing dim and soft, her voice quiet across the vast region between them, “what kinds of things?”
“Nazis and Thor’s hammer and shiny red dresses.”
He must be wandering his delusions again and she figured, why not wade in with him, “were the Nazis wearing the red dresses?”
“No, thank God but you were.”
“I was wearing a shiny red dress? How did I look?”
“If I answer that question, you’ll hit me again.”
Maybe she shouldn’t play into his medication after all, “well, why don’t you go to sleep and dream about things and tomorrow, we will get another head scan.”
The side of his face ached from her 1939 clenched fist and deciding to go for broke, given he knew she’d chock up anything he said to drug-addled haze, “your hair was slicked back, pin-curled, perfect even as we ran up and down the halls, thwarting Nazis and trying to find a way to get me home.” Continuing when all she did was tilt her head, listening with both ear and he hoped, heart, “you saved the world in a knee-length dark red dress and heels and,” pinpoint focus on her darkening blue eyes, “you looked more beautiful than I’ve ever deserved to see you.”
Oh, she could so easily be dragged into his delirium … dream … reality …
This was headed to a bad place and she needed to stop the train before she got fully onboard, believing every last word falling from his lips, “I always thought I looked pretty good in my pajama pants and Yosemite Sam t-shirt.”
“That’s my t-shirt, by the way.”
Returning to lightness even as her heart pounded unexpectedly in her chest, “you say yours, I say mine. I keep it. We both win.”
“How do I win?”
Was she really going to say it?
“Because you get to see me in it.”
She said it.
“If I ever find that red dress, Scully, I’m buying it and you’re wearing it and we’re going out on the town to make sure everyone sees you in it. There’ll be so many guys falling at your feet, you won’t know what to do.”
“So, I’ll just stand there and let them swoon?”
“And then you’ll come home with me.”
She felt the blush blooming across her chest and crawling up her face, “you need to go to sleep, Mulder. As both your doctor and your …” she hesitated without understanding why, partner seeming cold, friend seeming inadequate, anything other distinction making her blush even more, “you need to get some sleep, Mulder and so do I.” Standing quickly, squeaking chair legs against tile, “I should probably go. I’ll pick up some clothes for you and bring them back tomorrow when they release you, okay?”
She still hadn’t let go of his hand.
Odd.
In fact, her fingers were firmly joined with his, zippered closed, thumb stroking thumb.
Very odd.
“Hey, Scully,” tugging her hand so she moved towards him, she leaned across the bar of the bed once again.
“Yes?”
“Be with me tonight. Spring me from this place and take me home and hover and feed me meds and check my stitches and just … be with me.”
Another ‘oh, brother’ should have risen up her throat, fallen to his ears but instead, she leaned in even more, “let me go find a doctor.”
&&&&&&&&&&&&
There was finagling and promising and coercion to the highest levels but in the end, she helped him off the elevator and down the hall to his apartment, setting him on the bed, taking in his weary eyes, his pale face, “you look terrible.”
Not able to argue such a valid point, “could you find me something to wear, please? I feel like I’m about to die or at the very least, begin having hallucinations of pink elephants playing poker in the corner.”
Not about to dispute the obvious, pink elephants fairly likely at this point in their day, “can you sit up for a second or do you want to lay down while I find things?”
Hands firmly gripping mattress edge, “I’ve got it. Just don’t leave.”
She’d return to that statement later on but for now, “I’ll be back.”
At the dresser, she pulled out stuff for both of them, missing the Yosemite Sam shirt but happy with her find of ‘Sit on it, Potsie’ black, frayed glory. Soon, she was back beside him, gently pulling his shirt over his head, wincing along with him when she passed the collar over his bruise-darkening eye. Pants weren’t too difficult, Scully holding his arm for balance while he dropped scrubs and pulled up ratty sweatpants, “remind me not to follow any ghosts ships in the near future.”
“No.”
He smiled as best he could but most of his energy and being was wrapped up in desperate need to lay down, go to sleep, rid his head of the terrible pounding that had wedged itself behind his eyes, “did you bring drugs home with you?”
“Several. What color do you want?”
“Rainbow me up, please? My head feels like it’s going to explode.”
Drugs swallowed, Scully changed – he would comment on her shirt at some point in the evening – and after tucking him in, she turned out the light but came back to his side, “I’m going to go sleep out on the couch, okay? Do you need anything?”
Even through pain and wavering reality, “be with me, remember? The couch is too far.” Indicating over his shoulder, eyes already closing for longer and longer intervals, “I have plenty of room behind me, softest mattress in the place, I promise.”
She could seriously just wait two minutes then go out to the couch, he’d never know but Scully being Scully, especially tonight, especially now, especially here, “okay but if you kick me in your sleep, I’m kicking back.”
Slurred, sleepy, “I’ll try not to kiss you in your sleep, promise.”
Nearly correcting him, she instead checked the front door locks one more time, then, incremental debate later, folded back the covers opposite him, sheets cool, pillow shockingly comfortable. She’ll admit it, she may have let out a slight, happy, back of the throat groan when her head sank down into it.
This pillow may have to go the way of Yosemite.
&&&&&&&&&&
Never expecting to fall asleep so quickly, she had no idea she had until she found herself blinking, eyes rolling and lids sticky. Concept of time had disappeared, clock telling her it was after 2 am but mind firmly believing she’d only been asleep for a few minutes. Wondering what had woken her, she turned to her other side, coming face to face with Mulder, still asleep but hand twitching, searching.
He must have touched her back while he moved and taking his wandering fingers, she was surprised when he bought them to his lips, kissing her knuckles, “I should have kissed you again after you hit me.”
Wondering if he was still dreaming, “Mulder?”
His eyes opened suddenly, wide awake like she’d never seen him, “You saved the world and I should have kissed you again.”
“You kissed me?”
Smiling, his eyes closed, drifting back to dreams, “and I want to do it again.”
Still back on the last statement, “you kissed me?” He answered with a deep sigh, sleep capturing the conversation in limbo and driving her forward, 2 am a thing of both beauty and shadow, she maneuvered to get her lips to his, a light brush, a tentative touch, a fleeting taste, “I love you, too, Mulder.”

20 First Lines
I was tagged by @nightwingshero Thank you this looks like so much fun!
I tag @starsandstormyseas @loopally @pen-in-hand @swiftly-heart @morganwriteblr @oathofoaks @ocfairygodmother @witchofinterest and anyone else who’d like to try :)
Rules: List the first lines of your last 20 stories (if you have less than 20, just list them all!). See if there are any patterns. Choose your favorite opening line. Then tag 5 of your favorite authors!
I started with any wips I haven’t published first and then went down the list of my most recent stories on my ff.net account. Some of these I kinda cringe at having written them, but it also shows how I’ve grown so I guess I’ll embarrass myself and share some of them haha.
1. Petals of Beskar - The Mandalorian (Din x Casali) Out the window, Mando could see Nevarro City getting closer and closer as the Razor Crest
2. Shards - Young Justice (Wally x Marnie) She glanced down at her phone with a huff. 8:15. The tapping of her foot was one of the few sounds that she could hear besides the sounds of birds chirping and the occasional
3. Birds of a Feather - My Hero Academia (Hawks x Yuriko) The cold was an unwelcome friend. It constantly came and went.
4. In the Drowning Deep - Disney Descendants (Harry x Aria) The sound of the camera's shutter going off filled the air for a brief moment as the red-headed girl brought the camera down from her face. She smiled up at the tree as the sun
5. The Stars Remained - Voltron (Shiro x Lyra) Her eyes scanned the page over and over again. Try as she might she couldn't even finish one page, let alone the entire chapter, not with Shiro talking up a storm as he went
6. A Thorn in My Side - Harry Potter (Fred x Thorn and George x Leila) "Mum! Dad! Hurry up! I found platforms 9 and 10!" an eleven year old Thorn Fernsby shouted as she pushed her trolley through Kings Cross Station, her brunette hair in a braid
7. What Happens Now? - MCU (Bucky x Tracey) The scenery blurred passed, a mix of colors. They were racing through the streets. Their hammering hearts matched the speed they were going as they veered in and out of
8. Two is Better Than One - Four Brothers (Jack x Alex) They drove through Detroit and through a few neighborhoods. The occasional gang looking group would stare at the car as it drove by. The six year old girl in the back seat would
9. Pulchritudinous - The Hobbit (Kili x Nella) "Erebor's riches came from the gold and gems, buried deep within the endless mines and caverns that lay within it." A fair-haired dwarf stared down at three dwarflings, each with
10. Life at the Tower - MCU (a bunch of oneshots with my OCs and canon characters) Tracey shook her head as she sat in the living room on the top floor. She was on the couch with her laptop in her lap as she watched the show on
11. Snow Flower - Fairy Tail (Gray x Piper) Rain poured down onto the stone paved streets of Magnolia as a group stood outside all dressed in black with their heads down. The sound of the rain hitting the roofs of buildings
12. A Barnes Family Christmas - MCU (Bucky x Tracey) "Can we get a tiny twee?" Annabeth asked, swinging hers and her dad's arm as they walked down the aisle of Christmas trees. The four year old looked side to side as she and her
13. Everything is Going to be Okay - MCU (Bucky x Tracey) It was new information. New information for her at least. Well, she knew some things about it. The others knew more about it than her. Especially after the battle of New York
14. Two AM Races - MCU (Pietro and Clint) Pietro was never one for boredom. He could never sit still. Even before his experimentation with Hydra – when he was a child – he couldn't sit still. He always had to be doing
15. Star Spangled Man with a Plan - MCU (Steve x Sharon) "Isabella, no!" came a hiss outside the bedroom door. "Let me carry it. You will drop it."

17. Reunited - MCU (Bucky) Staring at the computer screen, he chewed his lip. This was by far one of the more nerve wracking things he had ever done. Sure going off to war and fighting a bunch of Nazis,
18. Say Something - The Amazing Spiderman (Peter x Isabelle) She leaned against the cool metal of the lockers that lined the school halls. She watched as the throng of students rushed passed her to get to lunch. She chewed the inside of her

Things I loved in individual Marvel Movies (FYI...there’s a lot)
Iron Man
The epitome of showing character development within the time frame of a single film through Tony Stark.
Pepper Potts pretty much being Tony’s baby sitter.
Soundtrack
A man who has everything and nothing.
It’s literally just a well balanced action movie.
The fact that is was mostly just RDJ improvising and the other actors having to work with it.
Tony realizing he is part of the problem and finds his purpose in trying to fix those problems, and by doing so working to become a better person.
The fact that Tony is still not a fully realized “hero” at the end of this film-- he still has some quirks to work through and is a little too arrogant. But this really sets up for even more amazing character development in the next films.
It is a movie of its time-- terrorism and greedy businessmen as the villains.
The fact that Tony and Pepper are not a couple by the end, even when I ship them.
“I am Iron Man” The instant new trend of not hiding their identity.
Tony: Throw in a little hot rod red. Jarvis: Yes, that will help you keep a low profile.
Pepper buying herself a birthday present from Tony.
Tony seeing her in the dress.
Pepper “taking out the garbage”-- burn
Tony’s suite tests and Dummy trying to put out a fire.
Tony making the first suite in the cave-- i love that montage
Stane’s moment in realizing how the suite worked-- it’s such a silent but great moment
“Don’t waste your life.”
The acting that takes place in the moment Stane takes the reactor out of Tony’s chest is amazing-- RDJ doesn’t even say anything.
Pepper getting the thumb drive out of the office-- and having the forethought to have Coulson follow her-- Coulson just sitting there waiting (it was oddly funny to me).
The eventual use of the SHIELD acronym
Proof that Tony Stark has a heart.
I don’t have anyone but you.
Iron Man 2
Tony and Pepper kissing for the first time....admittedly the first two films came out at a time when the thing I mostly cared about was shipping.
Soundtrack
Stark clearly still developing as a person and superhero...I love me some character development.
Stark refusing to give the suite
“If your priority was to actually to...”-- Tony questioning governmental control
“I am Iron Man. The suite and I are one. To turn it over will be to turn over myself which would be tantamount to indentured servitude or prostitution...”
The Iron Man suit as a “shield”--- interesting.
I love watching Tony in his workshop.
Dummy.
Pepper taking charge several times throughout.
Natasha totally taking out Happy when he assumes she can’t.
Pepper actually coming to like Natasha as her assistant.
Tony dealing with his mortality
Tony: Were you aiming for him or me...I can’t tell!
Happy just ramming into Whiplash with the car over and over again.
I told you I don’t want to be part of your super secret boy band.
Fury and Tony talking about Howard Stark and how he was one of the founding members of shield.
Shout out to the tessaract.
Phil: I will taze you and watch super nanny as your drool into the carpet. Got it?
The ex wife.
Tony: Hammer tech? Rhodey: Yea.
Two seals fighting over a grape.
Phil leaving to go to New Mexico-- Thor shout out.
“Nice work kid.”
Pepper!!!
War machine and Iron Man working together to beat the iron suites-- I am partial to the shots of them in the Park area
Natasha beating the shit out of all the guys as she makes her way down the hallway...doing so very nonchalantly-- while happy takes on one guy.
Tony: You have a big gun but you’re not the big gun.
Hammer’s shock that Pepper is having him arrested while Pepper just glares at him totally unafraid of him.
Captain America shout out.
Pepper and Tony kiss.
I was here first, get a roof.
Tony: Text book narcissism?....agreed.
Getting the guy who hated Stark to present the award at the end.
“Funny, how annoying a little prick can be.”
Iron Man 3
Tony interacting with Harley
The question if Iron Man is the suite or the man-- Tony clearly needing to come to terms with the question if his heroism comes from the man or the suite-- and has to do so by accepting his weaknesses.
Tony proving he can still be a hero without the suite. He is a mechanic-- him infiltrating the mandarin mansion without the suite and just a bunch of every day items is amazing. This film just reminds us that his bad-assery comes from his mind. It is honestly just one of the best Stark moments all around.
Continuity in how Tony is affected by what happens to him.
Pepper coming to the rescue.
The fact that Tony went back for Dummy after his home was attacked.
In the end Tony is sure that even without the suite he is still Iron Man-- You can take away my tricks and toys, but the one thing you can’t take away...I am Iron Man.
The Dora Explorer watch
Honestly, I hate working here. They are so weird.
Captain America
Agent Carter totally beating the men into place and Steve clearly loving it.
Bucky: Weren’t you smaller?... What happened to you? Steve: I joined the army. Bucky: Did it hurt...is it permanent? Steve: A little...so far.
The introduction of the heart of the character-- good man vs perfect soldier
He’s artistic-- this really says something about his character.
The flag bit will not make me laugh.
Peggy Carter...enough said...literally...everything about her.
Steve using the garbage lid as a shield-- I just like the foreshadowing... someone get that man a shield.
I can do this all day-- even when he is tiny and doesn’t stand a chance he doesn’t back down against a bully knowing he won’t win (but he still called out the bully)
Knowing Peggy touching Steve’s chest was technically an honest reaction by the actress-- she was literally so shocked by seeing him without a shirt for the first time.
The fact that I can say, “aw look how cute and little they are,” about both Bucky and Steve.
Steve jumping on the grenade...is this a test?
He’s still skinny.
“You have no idea how to talk to a woman do you.”
“Waiting for the right partner.”
“How do you feel?” “Taller.”
“I could do this all day.”
Peggy making a kill shot on a man that is in a car and at quite a distance.
Peggy non nonchalantly shooting at Steve to test shield, but mostly out of jealousy...and Steve looking ready to pee himself.
Kid: go get him, I can swim.
The extreme differences in the reactions to the “performance” in the cities compared to the camps.
I really like the leather jacket.
“Where I am going if anyone yells at me I can shoot them” “Undoubtedly they will be shooting back.”
Fondue
Peggy: You can’t give me orders. Steve: The hell I can’t, I am a Captain.
Steve: You sure this thing works? Howard: It’s been tested more than you, pal.
Do you know what you’re doing? Steve: Yeah, I knocked out Adolf Hitler over 200 times.
Until the end of the line.
Bucky: You don’t have one of those do you?
Bucky refusing to leave Steve behind.
Cap and Bucky leading the rescued men back to camp.
I couldn’t call my ride.
Bucky: That little guy from Brooklyn that was too dumb to run away from a fight, I am following him.
Bucky: I am visible, I am turning into you. This is a horrible dream. Steve: Don’t take it so hard. Maybe she has a friend.
Bucky’s face of pure confusion after realizing Peggy wasn’t going to give him the time of day.
The subtle development of the friendship between Howard and Steve.
Bucky’s sniper skills.
Bucky: Remember when I made you ride the Cyclone at Coney Island? Steve: Yeah, and I threw up. Bucky: This isn’t payback is it?
Bucky: I had him on the ropes. Steve: I know you did.
Any time Bucky and Steve work together-- it just comes off very natural.
Bucky wielding, if only for a moment, the Captain America Shield.
Peggy and Steve’s kiss
I am not kissing ya.
Steve’s sacrifice.
Steve being able to think coherently enough to recognize that something is wrong when he wakes up by realizing the baseball game is too old.
The shot of Steve on a modern New York City.
“I had a date.”
Captain America Winter Soldier
The opening running scene (rather than something more actionesque-- and the banter that builds as Steve continuously passes Sam... this also really sets up the fact that this is a film that concentrates almost solely on characters (despite having great action sequences).
On your left....two passes later...Don’t say it.
Steve’s speech over the intercom, “...It’s a price I’m willing to pay. I may be the only one...but I am willing to bet I am not.”
Steve in glasses.
The Winter Solider-- his knife skills....the clear progression throughout the film as he becomes more and more conflicted.
“I am 95, I am not dead.”--- I need more information about this line.
“Does anyone want to get off?”
Natasha and Steve as a team-- Steve becoming more trusting of her
The fact that of any movie he could have watched after waking up Steve watched “Saw”
Steve/WS hand to hand battle
“This isn’t freedom; this is fear.” (Steve seeing Shield as a bully...he doesn’t like bullies)
Steve’s progressive realization that the power of the individual to make choices is more important than orders from an entity that may have ulterior motives.
Falcon/Sam treating Steve like a regular guy and just developing a loyal friendship that I appreciate.
WS catching Steve’s shield with one arm.
Until the end of the line.
Bucky/WS’s murder walk.
Nat: Where did Captain America learn to steal a car? Steve: Nazi Germany, and we’re borrowing, take your feet off the dash.
It’s really not your style Rogers. Steve: You’re right, it’s not, it’s hers (then commence Nat still trying to find Steve a date).
Captain America Civil War
Bucky noticeably uncomfortable when he first hears the sirens, then his relief when they pass him and the immediate return to being on edge when he notices the man looking at him from across the street.
So many reminders that Bucky’s nature is not toward violence.
Steve confronting Bucky in his apartment only for Bucky to run, trying so hard to avoid a fight...but the fight that happens I love, especially in the stairwell.
Bucky going after the reactor of the Iron Man suite-- noticeably not going for killing blows during the final fight and despite Tony full out trying to kill him.
How tired and sad Bucky sounds when he tells Cap, “It always ends in a fight
Wanda: You guys know I can move things with my mind right.
Wanda: You were pulling your punches.
Steve’s talk with Wanda about doing and saving who you can and that it doesn’t always mean everyone.
Tony managing to disarm the greatest assassin with nothing but a gauntlet while wearing a three piece suite.
Steve’s clear conflict regarding his friendship with Tony and willingness to forgive him at the end.
Wanda’s relationship with both Clint and Steve... I wanted more of this.
Steve understanding the dangers of the accords more than Tony (based on experience)-- and the importance of his message, “you can’t save everyone,” but you can save the majority.
I admit...this movie got me so worked up about how Tony wants so much to start pushing away the blame for even one lost life that he becomes so willing to place all the responsibility on a governmental power rather than the individual (as Steve believes) even at the cost of putting targets on the back of his friends/allies. I will never not be shocked at his shock when he talks of Wanda as a weapon or his shock when they put them all in prison. But I also love that I got so worked up about this-- it makes for a great watch.
“No you move.”
Bucky and the motorcycle-- wow, that was not only cool...but it was really, REALLY hot.
I can’t control their fear-- only my own.
I retire for like what five minutes and it all goes to shit.
You want to mope go to high school. You want to make amends, you get off your ass.
I can’t, but she can.
You locked me in my room.
Bucky being totally done with all the weird stuff going on around him.
“I can do this all day.”
Geez, Tony. How old is this guy.
Bucky moving in front of Sam to protect him from Spiderman.
You couldn’t have done that earlier? (I hate you.)
Can you move your seat up. (No).
“You don’t deserve it-- My father made that shield”-- he sounds like a child trying to defend himself and his actions. Steve dropping the shield and taking Bucky is pretty much him winning the fight-- taking the higher ground-- good man vs. good soldier being reiterated here. The shield doesn’t take away from Cap’s strength at all-- what made him a hero is his heart, the fact that he is a good man and he doesn’t need the shield. This is something that Tony is still learning and coming to terms with in his developmental arc.
This is the first time that we see Tony truly angry during his first with Steve-- he is being driven by his instincts to get revenge at that moment-- he is devastating but it takes away from one of his strengths-- thinking things out.
Tony is in the wrong regarding his trying to kill Bucky, he even practically admits it when Steve attempts to get him to see reason, “I don’t care, he killed my mom.” Tony is in the wrong and yet Steve still understands Tony’s feelings, yet he can’t let Bucky die even from someone he calls a friend-- this just makes for good emotionally intense conflict that is matched by the actual physical conflict.
Steve: He’s my friend. Tony: So was I-- this line literally emotionally devastates both characters.
Steve: I can do this all day. (Cap refusing to back down to protect his friend).
Tony losing because of one moment Bucky helps Steve simply by providing a seconds distraction.
Natasha being there for Steve at Peggy’s funeral
Tony trying to appeal to Steve’s past in order to get him to sign the accords using pens from Howard (one for each of them) and Steve’s response, “Some would say it bought us closer to war.” What a way to immediately set up where these two stand.
The idea that there are two sides to “right”-- Steve concentrating on moral and Tony being a realist... it really calls in to question which side you agree with most, and I love that.
Steve: If I see a situation going south I can’t ignore it. I wish I could. Tony: No you don’t. Steve: You’re right, I don’t.
Tony clearly trying to use the accords as an excuse to help him stop because he keeps finding excuses to not stop even when he wants to for Pepper
Did you know?-- the fact that it finally is made clear that Steve is not perfect and is willing to lie. He has reasons, but I think it is great to realize the contrast between the legend of perfect Captain America and Steve Rogers.
Steve realizing that the accords are similar to what Shield was doing in trying to deter war using fear/threats/control before it happened (which never works)-- Steve’s, “She’s a kid!” vs Tony’s, “She’s not a U.S. citizen and they don’t grant visas to weapons of mass destruction!” is really Steve’s break away from any possibility of him signing the accords.
Tony’s greatest fear of being alone coming to pass as he is left at Avengers headquarters alone.
Steve: Where you from kid? Peter: Queens. Steve: Brooklyn
Tony never really seems to truly agree with the accords (not only does he also break them) on a moral level and he seems haunted by it throughout the film, while Steve is made stronger by his decision because he is sure of his position
Tony: I am trying to keep you from tearing the Avengers apart. Steve: You did that when you signed-- how upset Tony is vs. how calm and matter of fact Steve is (who is surer of themselves?)
Thor
Frigga and Loki’s relationship
Darcy... she needs to be around more in the other movies.
Not that it’s a favorite thing, but I am honestly always confused how Thor is so hero worshiped when he’s kind of a dick at the beginning, and then when Loki starts doing similar things that Thor did he’s the bad guy (not saying he should have done them...but double standards and hypocrisy abound in this movie). The more you watch the more you realize that everyone treats Loki like crap... like wow, they were all lucky Loki loved Thor and his family or he would have done something much sooner.
Loki’s manipulations.
Sif: I did. Thor: True, but I supported you.
“ What happened, silver tongue turned to lead?”
Loki’s entire storyline.
Sif.
Loki using magic and daggers-- his fighting style is so interesting, wish we saw more of it.
“Go home little princess.” “Damn”
Loki being touched by the frost giant.
Loki more actively protecting the warriors three and Sif on Johtunheim than Thor.
Loki’s face while listening to the argument between Odin and Thor.
Darcy: Does he need CPR, because I totally know CPR.
Darcy: Yeah, we can tell you’re hammered, it's pretty obvious.
Jane: I grazed him, but she tasered him. Darcy: Yes, I did.
The number of times Jane hits Thor with a car.
Loki’s confrontation with Odin and the pure emotion that Hiddleston portrays in that moment.
Thor’s new found love of pop tarts and coffee
Next time you decide to taser someone make sure he’s already in the car.
Jane and Darcy’s reactions to Thor’s attractiveness.
“I used to know this scientist. I pioneer in gamma radiation. SHIELD showed up and I never saw them again.”
The first introduction to Hawkeye...being told to grab a gun but taking the bow and arrow instead.
Barton: You want me to slow him down sir or are you going to send in more guys for him to beat up.
Thor: You’re big- fought bigger.
Barton: I am starting to root for this guy.
Science Fiction as a precursor to science fact.
Science Fiction is just science we don’t understand yet.
My realization that even as early as the first Thor film Thor and Loki’s earth fashion sense was already very much established- high power businessman vs. “very comfortable/casual”-- symbolic, maybe.
The fact that Loki as a villain is perfection-- he is a match for Thor, he is personable, his motivations are similar but he has different methods, and you can see some reason in them.
Donald Blake shout outs.
Loki going from being rather meek at the beginning compared to his second return to Johtunheim to strike a deal with Laufey.
The fact that Loki clearly had no intention of letting Laufey kill Odin.
Heimdal’s learning that Loki is a better sorcerer then he was given credit for and can cloak himself even from the gatekeeper.
Thor and Jane bonding over science/magic.
We got xena, Jackie chan and Robin hood.
“Found you!”
“Is that one of Stark’s?”
Thor’s sacrifice- I love the drama of it.
Thor’s powers being returned- again, very dramatic.
So this is how you normally look-- it’s a good look.
Loki: I never wanted the throne! I only wanted to be your equal.
Thor pinning Loki just by putting the hammer on his chest.
Loki: I could have done it, father!Loki’s look of devastation when he is again rejected by his father.
Thor Dark World
Ta Da!
Loki totally ignoring the chaos of battle around him as he reads a book.
“I like her.”
You’ll what? Kill me? Evidently, there will be a line.
Loki: Now they’re firing at us. Thor: Thank you for the commentary Loki, it's not at all distracting.
Loki and Thor teaming up and using Loki’s magic in battle... I would have loved to have seen more of this team up happening in the films
To be honest, the only real saving grace of this movie was Loki... which I can get behind.
“I didn’t do it for him.”
Loki lecturing Thor about his escape plan and Thor pushing him out the open hatch in their ship.
Loki being revealed on the throne.
“Oh dear, is she dead?”
“I think you missed a column”
Loki’s reaction to Frigga’s death.
Loki’s look after having yelled at his mother.
Frigga attempting to make Loki’s imprisonment comfortable, she will never not see him as her son.
Who put me there! (There are so many levels to that statement and the acting is amazing).
Thor Ragnarok
Soundtrack
The whole play that Loki had written for himself and his pure enjoyment of it while pretending to be Odin.
“Beg your pardon?”
“You had one job. Just the one.”
“I am not a witch.” “How come you dress like one?” “Hey (offended).”
Thor’s powers
“I’ve been falling for 30 minutes!”
Hela-- love her-- a little anti-climatic ending.
Loki’s epic eye roll.
“Oh shit.”
Thor totally fangirling over Valkyrie.
Thor’s story about when he and Loki were 8 and Loki pretended to be a snake before stabbing him.
“It’s in my brain now”
Thor being full out God of Thunder and the soundtrack during the scene is amazing.
“I am not doing get help.”
“Do you have a better plan?” “No.” “We’re doing it.”
Loki cheering the Hulk smashing Thor.
Loki using his daggers again...I still wish we got to see more of that.
Your savior is here.
“I saw you coming.” “Of course you did”
“I’ve never met this man in my life.” “He’s my brother.” “Adopted.”
“I’m here.”
Avengers
There is something I greatly enjoy about the shot of Loki being taken in shackles down the hallway of the Shield based-- he definitely still feels in control even then.
Learning to become a team and not just automatically being a well-oiled machine.
Tony and Bruce’s science bromance
There will always be men like you.
Loki: I am listening.
Tony: Doth mother know you wearath her drapes.
Fury: 10 bucks says your wrong...Cap paying up on his bet with Fury.
Cap’s simple response: You should have left it in the ocean.
Avengers theme
I’ve got red in my ledger, I’d like to wipe it out.... the whole scene between Loki and Nat and the changing power dynamics during it is simply great writing and acting. And the end line of Nat’s being, “Thank you for your cooperation,” to show she came out on top in that battle is extra awesome.
She turns out not be another pretty face--- and then Natasha proceeds to annihilate them single-handed
Coulson calling Natasha through her targets phone then arguing with him on the phone that she’s too busy working, while also being tied up.
Natasha being convinced to leave her mission by being told Barton was compromised.
Bruce is on the run but still trying to do good.
Mark Ruffalo as Bruce
“No its won by soldiers”...fade into Captain America’s first intro in the film.
Tony: Like Christmas, but more me.
12% of a moment.
Tony: his first name is agent.
Pepper: Is this about the Avengers initiative...which I know nothing about. Tony:...I didn’t qualify for. Pepper: I didn’t know that either. Tony: Apparently I am volatile, self-obsessed, don’t play well with others. Pepper: That I did know.
Phil and Pepper being chummy with each other...I would have enjoyed more of this.
Coulson totally fan-boying over Cap.
Coulson: I watched you while you were sleeping.
Natasha: I thought Coulson was going to swoon. Has he asked you to sign his trading cards yet? They’re vintage, he’s very proud.
Bruce: They want me in a submerged pressurized metal container? (sees its actually going to take flight instead) Oh no, this is much worse (in complete sarcasm).
Cap immediately accepting Bruce.
How obviously uncomfortable Bruce is upon first going on the helicarrier surrounded by people. Such good acting.
Cap: Mr. Stark. Tony: Captain
Fury: Ant, meet boot.
Stark needing entrance music to confront Loki.
The near instant tension between Cap and Tony after capturing Loki.
Loki: I am not overly fond of what follows.
Cap: Stark, we need a plan of attack. Stark: I have a plan, attack.
Loki: I remember a shadow, living in the shade of your greatness.
Tasha: He’s killed 80 people in two days. Thor: He’s adopted.
Cap: I knew that reference!
Hill: When did you become an expert in thermonuclear astrophysics. Tony: Last night.
Tony: I am a huge fan of how you lose control and turn into an enormous green rage monster.
Tony: An intelligence organization that fears intelligence? Historically, not awesome.
Bruce being uncomfortable naming the Hulk and calling him ‘the other guy’
Bruce looking so uncomfortable during the first act of the film
Tony and Cap bringing up phase 2 at the same time in two different ways-- action and intelligence.
Tony: I am sorry Nick, you were lying.
Bruce: I am not leaving just because you get a little twitchy.
Tony: How is this now about me? Cap: I am sorry, isn’t everything.
Cap: You may not be a threat but you better stop acting like a hero. Tony: Like you? Everything special about you came out of a bottle. (pretty much this entire conversation)
Cap: put on the suite let’s find out. Tony: I am not afraid of you old man. (explosion) Cap: Put on the suite. Tony: Yep.
Cap: It seems to run on some form of electricity. Tony: Well, you’re not wrong.
Loki: Are you ever not going to fall for that?
Phil: So that’s what it does.
Man: You an alien...no...well, then son you’ve got a condition.
Tony: He wants a monument with his name plastered...son of a bitch.
Thinking he is going to die wants to call and talk to Pepper.
Tony: We have a hulk.
Tony: We may not be able to protect the earth but you can damn well be sure we’ll avenge it.
Cop: Why the hell should I take orders from you. ( Cap destroys some aliens...cop then immediately obeys orders.)
Bruce: That’s my secret... I am always angry.
That epic Avengers assemble round shot.
Barton not even looking while he makes a kill shot.
Fury: I recognize the council as made a decision, but given that it is a stupid ass decision I’ve elected to ignore it.
Hulk saving Tony
The “A” left on Stark tower.
Avengers Age of Ultron
The reaction of the Avengers when discovering Barton’s family life.
The fact that Barton has a normal family life.
Language.
Please be a secret door...yay!
Tony: Good talk. Random Hydra Extra: No it wasn’t
The teamwork in the opening scene
I somehow found myself shipping Nat and Bruce.
“A great deal of complaining and tales of torn deltoids.”- Thor
“He’s the boss”- Tony about Cap
“He’s fast and she’s weird” - Maria Hill
“What kind of monster would allow a German scientist to experiment on him in order to protect his country?”- Cap to Hill
“Unlike you, I don’t have a lot of time...will...Thor be there”
Sam: following cold leads on our missing person's case (Bucky).
“He’s also a huge dork...chicks dig that.”- Natasha flirting with Bruce by describing him...then Cap totally shipping them.
Cap: I’ve seen her flirt up close...As may be the world’s leading authority on waiting too long...don’t. Bruce: What do you mean up close?
The team trying to lift the hammer.
Cap: Together. Tony: We’ll lose. Cap: Then we’ll do that together too.
Black Panther references
Tony admitting that watching his friends die is not as bad as watching them die and he doesn’t.
Tony: I cracked into the Pentagon when I was in high school on a dare.
Cap: I really miss the days when the weirdest thing science created was me.
Barton: You’re no match for him, Captain. Cap:...Thanks, Barton.
Natasha: Cap, keep them occupied. Cap (out of breath): What do you think I’ve been doing?
Wanda....everything Wanda
Wanda: Ultron can’t tell the difference between saving the world and destroying it; where do you think he gets that?
Vision handing Thor’s hammer to him like its no big deal.
No one listening to Pietro so he comes back with a gun...”get off your asses.”
Cap: You get killed, walk it off....you didn’t finish....what were you napping.
I actually never realized just how snarky Steve is in this movie.
The teamwork between Thor and Cap is awesome.
Wandas entrance as an Avenger...YES!!!!!
Cap: We are not clear...we are really not clear.
Pietro: Keep up old man. Barton: No one would know...no one...last time I saw him Ultron was sitting on him...quick little bastard.
The fact that the above line was improvised by Renner.
Thor:...I am running out of things to say....you ready.
Pietro’s sacrifice. Wanda’s reaction after feeling it.
Barton names his son after both Natasha and Pietro.
Cap and Tony arguing that Vision picking up the hammer doesn’t count...and an elevator is also not worthy.
Wanda: I’ll protect it (looks at Hawkeye). It’s my job.
Vision: He’s right, he hates you the most.
Hulk having an obvious soft spot for Natasha
Natasha opening up to Bruce about her past.
Tony: Like the old man said, together.
Natasha: Still think you’re the only monster?
The whole idea of what makes a monster and how many people view someone else or themselves as a monster is so interesting and play a huge role in characterization.
Steve refusing to leave the flying city as long as there was even one civilian left there... Nat agreeing with him, “There are worse ways to go.”
Fury’s entrance and Steve’s, “Fury, you son of a bitch.”
Avengers Infinity War
Cap’s entrance by walking out of the shadows
Tom Holland’s improvising his death scene.
We don’t want to kill you, but we will.
Earth just lost her best defender.
Wanda being a complete badass-- she literally destroyed a stone with one hand and held off a nearly fully powered Thanos with the other
Caps glorious beard.
“I see you copied my beard.”
Strange seeing only ONE possible win in thousands...then giving up the stone... we’re in the endgame now...it was the only way.
Shuri making Bruce feel like an idiot.
Someone get this man a shield.
Steve and T’Challa running to the front of the battle line.
“I hope they remember you.”
Bucky alive and well
You speak groot...it was an elective.
Bring me Thanos!!! (In fact, the entire scene of Thor arriving to join the fight is cinematic gold)
Thanos on the farm-- yes, let them reiterate he won...like wow... you don’t get that much
What was she doing up there all this time?
“She’s not alone.”
Loki revealing the tessaract...trying to take Thanos on alone...and getting in one last jab with, “You will never be a god.”
Quill attempting to mimic Thor’s voice.
Rabbit
Any interaction between Thor and Rocket
Rocket engaging Thor in a meaningful conversation to comfort him-- such a huge growth is seen in his character.
Quill: What kind of weapon are we talking about here. Thor: The Thanos killing kind. Quill: Don’t you think we should all have a weapon like that.
“Stop messaging his muscles.”
Thor: Your bodies crumble as your minds collapse into madness. Rocket: Is it weird I want to do it even more now? Thor: A little bit.
Thor: He’s never fought me. Rocket: Yes he has. Thor: He’s never fought me twice.
It will kill you. Thor: Only if I die.
I’m way past asking for permission.
The 50% of me that’s stupid, that’s 100% you.
Rocket being picked up by Bucky and both continuing to shoot.
Oh, I’ll get that arm.
Thor being heartbreakingly optimistic and hiding his pain behind a smile until Rocket asks, “What if you’re wrong?” and Thor responds, “What more could I lose?” and Rocket’s, “I could lose a lot.”
The snap...”Oh god.”
You should have gone for the head.
You’re an Avenger now.
Peter: I should’ve gone home but it was such a long way down... If anything it’s kind of your fault that I am here. (Tony’s face is great)
Tony: The kid has seen more movies.
Tony and Thanos’ confrontation.
The adults are talking.
Steve giving his all to hold back Thanos with his bare hands and Thanos’ face of momentary confusion that a single man could hold him back even for a second.
My constant wondering what the result would have been if Tony and Cap were together in any of the scenes-- they work best together despite their contrasting personalities.
Doctor Strange
An arrogant man being forced to reconsider his world view and grow
Strange’s reaction to killing a man is perfect for the character but also just great acting from Ben.
Strange being called Master Strange and not wanting the title and being very adamant about not wanting the responsibility
Refusing to kill and being called a coward for it, but refusing to budge from his belief which results in a very interesting and wholly creative end battle... and fully earning and owning the title of Master.
Strange: You lack imagination. (No you lack a spine).
Dormmamu, I’ve come to bargain.
A hero actually using an infinity stone.
Say what you want about this film but I honestly think it has a great character arc for Strange.
The cloak.
Strange’s jokes.
Strange using astral projection to learn more.
The Incredible Hulk
It was better than the first one...remake it with Mark Ruffalo and we’ll talk.
Guardians of the Galaxy
Soundtrack
Introduction to Star-Lord
The mugshot line up and jailbreak
“You said it yourself bitch, we’re the guardians of the galaxy”
Dance off distraction... also perfect part of his characterization.
Quill trying to get Gamora to join in on the dance off.
The circle moment where Quill first becomes emotionally open and asks for help-- ending with Rocket’s “We’re all standing now.”
Peter coming to terms with his mother’s death as signified by his finally opening her final gift to him.
We are groot.
Rocket’s commentary while on the public while tracking down Quill
Rocket: What’s a Racoon? Quill: You are stupid. Rocket: Ain’t no thing like me except me.
Rocket’s bed fur.
Gamora: You must be joking. Rocket: No I really heard they find you attractive.
Let’s just say I really like Rocket.
Quill: A bomb? And you just leave it laying around? Rocket: I was going to put it in a box.
Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2
The Guardians team...this movie was pretty disappointing in most areas but I did enjoy the interactions among the characters.
Ego brainwashing Quill through so much of the film to convince him that he is above his team and be swayed to Ego’s side
The bodies of Ego’s children reveal
Yondu being revealed to be the hero and the real father figure
You look like Mary Poppins...Is he cool....Yeah... I am Mary Poppins y’all.
Peter’s discovery of the cause of his mother’s death-- that moment is amazing cinema
Ego: You are a god...if you kill me you’ll be just like everyone else. Quill: What’s so wrong with that? (aka being perfect doesn’t mean shit)
By the end, the Guardians become a family.
Rocket and Yando interaction... they’re both assholes that care.
Rocket’s shock that the colors shined for Yondu in his death... Quill accepting and sharing in Rocket’s pain in that moment.
Spiderman Homecoming
If you’re nothing without the suite then you shouldn’t have it.
The car intense car scene-- amazing cinema there
Peter: Come on Peter...come on, Spiderman.
Training wheels protocol
If you even cared you’d actually be here.
The adult is talking.
Peter is pretty bad at keeping his secret.
MJ reveal
Peter deciding to continue being the friendly neighborhood Spiderman for a while longer.
Happy having kept a ring on him for years.
Peter speaking revealing he can understand and speak Spanish when the shop keeper talks about Aunt May.
Ant-Man
The father-daughter relationship is adorable.
“I hope you don’t catch him.”
My days of breaking in and stealing shit are done. What do you want me to do? (I want you to break into a place and steal some shit.)
Scott as a father.
Ant-Man and Wasp
The montage of what Scott does in his spare time while under house arrest.
Again...father/daughter relationship.
The fact that Scott and Paxton go from viewing each other with low opinions in the first movie to seeing each other like family... it's so healthy.
Black Panther
Killmonger’s entrance into the throne room and very nonchalantly stating that he wants the throne before demanding to be asked who he is and letting it rip. The calm to intense anger is awesome.
This corset is really uncomfortable so can we wrap this up and go home?
What are THOOOSSEE?!
Everyone is shooting at me...wait let me put on my helmet.
Okay...let us just assume most of this list would consist of the wonder that is princess Shuri.
“Americans”
Great another broken white boy for us to fix.
T’Challa’s growth as a character by coming to understand the world differently through Killmonger’s actions.
The fact that T’Challa and Killmonger actually want similar things but come into conflict by their complete opposite ways of going about accomplishing their goal.
Stand up, you are a king.
The fact that T’Challa surrounds himself with females rather than men as his most loyal, fierce, and intelligent people.
Killmonger and T’Challa sharing a sunset and having a moment of understanding before Killmonger’s death.
The truth behind Killmonger’s reasoning and goals.
“Would you kill me, my love?” “For Wakanda? Without question.”
You can’t blame me, I almost died.
The moment I believe T’Challa became king: You were wrong! All of you were wrong! We let the fear of our discovery stop us from doing what is right!
.....I’ll add more, I’ve just been working at it for so long as I rewatched the films I am just posting it now and will add on later

Drabble idea, Bucky has been the winter soldier and he's fine now. But then they find out that Danny has been missing and when they find him he's winter soldier 2.0.
So I was writing this and I was almost done with it but then I went back and read the prompt again and realized I had written something that was sort of right but not really so here’s take two
--------------
Bucky had gotten along with Danny from the very first time the boy had awkwardly said hi to him. Sure, he had done most of the talking, but Bucky was an emotionally stunted ex-assassin, so that wasn’t really a surprise. And for Danny it hadn’t really been a problem. Bucky had trouble connecting to people sometimes, and was probably shit for comforting someone, but he was a damn good listener. And he may be bad with words, but he made up for it with his actions. When Danny said he wanted to try a new hair style, he had left a hair magazine on the coffee table. When he casually mentioned the stomach problems he’d been having, Bucky had gotten him food that was supposed to help with that. When Danny said he wanted to get better, Bucky was there to help him train.
None of that mattered now, though. Because Danny was gone.
Jazz had called Sam, because he apparently has real friends that don’t dress up for Halloween every night to punch douche bags in the face. She had sounded worried, asking about Danny, if he was still there of not. Sam had told her no, that he had left a couple days prior and had thought he was safely at home.
Now there was an unspoken, world wide search going on for the kid. Hell, they were even having Thor check the Ghost Zone just in case Danny took a detour and got stuck or something.
Bucky felt like he was running in circles, and he knew the others did too. But Bucky actually liked Danny as a person, considered him a friend and definitely one of the smartest people he knew.
But he was just a kid. A fucking teenager. Wherever he was, whatever he was doing, he wasn’t going to come out the same way. But that wasn’t going to stop them from looking, and Bucky doubted anything would.
They searched high and low, even in places he was mostly likely going to be. Like the fucking desert, or Arizona. He also hates Florida, for whatever reason, but says that it’s literal hell one earth (Save for NASA, of course). He wasn’t anywhere.
But when he was ready he sure let them know it.
Danny had been missing for almost a month when they finally found him again. Or, rather he found them. Bucky had been searching through the sewers for the third time that week looking for his new friend when he realized they had looked everywhere but one place.
He was regretting the sewers now.
He quickly climbed out, running past civilians and cars until he made it back to his bike. He hooked his Stark Phone to the jack and called all of the Avengers, because if Bucky was right then they were fucking screwed.
-----------------
Brest was, compared to some of France’s major cities, pretty deserted. The place had 50,000 or so people living there, and there were large castles and other similar looking structures. None of the public seemed to notice or care, but that was the thing about Hydra. They were good at blending in.
Bucky remembered being held in the basement lab of the smaller building attached to the main section of the Château de Brest. There was more lab equipment down there than the bank vault he had stayed in in D.C., and in some cases, smarter people. Some always seemed to forget that when Bucky had been captured, it had been by Hydra, and while they had aimed at America first, they were very much an international power. Meaning they had put Bucky wherever they needed him to be.
Sometimes that meant in the basement of some ancient castle.
Despite it’s popularity, the castle’s defenses were ridiculously easy to get through. The cameras seemed to be pointed away from windows and doors, and there was a severe lack of guards on the inside.
“Something is wrong,” he said quietly, looking around for any sign of life. This place was clean. Almost too clean. Usually, with castles, there was a sort of permanent layer of dirt within the rocks. It helped with authenticity, and was an absolute bitch to clean. Nobody was ever able to clean stone. Not all the way, anyway. There was always some speck of something left behind. Hopefully there would be a piece of Danny somewhere that could show them the way to their beloved child Avenger.
Steve was close to Bucky as he led them down to the labs. He knew more from muscle than actual recollection that this was the direction to go. Bucky knew Steve was worried about his mental state, what with coming back to one of the many places that held him against his will, but he wasn’t too close. Not enough to make Bucky uncomfortable, but if he needed support, his friend was there. Bucky really appreciated that, because he didn’t know how he would respond when he walked through those doors.
He sighed, looking at the walls as they descended the stairs, trailing his fingers against the wall until he felt it.
He stopped dead in his tracks and traced a crack in the stone, his finger coming back with a spec of green on it. He examined it further, noticing the dent in it. It wasn’t just some crack in the wall. There had been a struggle here.
“We’re on the right track,” Bucky told them.
“How did you know to even come to this one?” Clint asked him from behind Steve. Bucky shrugged.
“Low surveillance, best lab equipment, quiet town, and the fact that this place has been closed for a month for no reason at all. It’s a perfect hiding spot for a kidnapped superhero.”
Clint nodded, looking around with his bow at the ready as he followed the super soldiers all the way down, being stopped only by a large, metal door with a scanner next to it.
“The dust has been wiped away,” Clint said, looking at the floor and the scanner. “Someone’s been here recently.”
“Or are already inside,” Natasha added.
Bucky sighed, starring at his metal fingers as they whirred in harmony before looking back to the team that had accepted him as their own.
“It would be rude not to knock, right?” He asked. That was the only warning they got as Bucky swung his arm as hard as he could at the door, prying it open with the metal appendage. Once he got a little bit of it open, Steve forced his fingers through as well and started pulling. From there it didn’t take long for the door to come open, and the alarm on the other side to start blaring in their ears.
“We have to move-” Bucky started saying to them, but was cut off by the thundering footsteps behind him. He turned around, only to see dozens, maybe even hundreds of guards, all armed to the teeth and fully loaded. It was like a small army, all centered in this one room. This only proved that Danny, or something or someone equally as powerful was behind the mass of bodies.
Bucky was the first to strike, and once he started, he didn’t stop. Couldn't stop, really. He saw red, and let his mind go blank. His heart felt void of emotion as he pounded into breakable faces with his metal arm, dropping bodies left and right with the other Avengers right behind him, fighting their way through all of this.
Bucky knew the way. He just needed an opening. He looked around, trying to find anything he could use to get passed them. And then it hit him.
Or, almost did, at least.
Thor’s hammer, whose name Bucky still couldn’t pronounce, barreled through Hydra agents like they were bowling pins, and while Bucky had always been skeptical of the actual magic that the hammer held, it was probably his best option.
“Thor!” He called, just as he was catching his hammer again. The blonde’s head snapped his way. “Throw it over there!” He pointed to a corridor behind Bucky where the chair was.
Thor didn’t nod or hesitate in any way. No, he just chucked it straight to Bucky, who dodged in a split second, and grabbed onto the handle in the next. It all happened so fast that even as he was letting go of the hammer, he was still processing the fact that he had just been dragged through a hoard of evil fuckfaces by it. But a path had cleared and he was where he needed to be, and that was all that mattered. The others could handle the hoards, he was sure of it. But he needed to get down there.
The minute the corridor opened up, he didn’t waste any time killing the scientists. There was probably a better moral way to do that, but they’re Nazi’s and therefore not people. He was sure Steve and the others could live with that reasoning. Plus they took the kid, so that already made the braniacs on their shitlist.
He moved like as swift as water, knocking down the other door where the chair and his cryochamber were at.
His stomach dropped when he saw who was residing in his old chair that he had long since abandoned.
The screams that filled the room were unearthly, and thankfully stopped when Bucky snapped the one scientist’s neck and sent his metal fist through the control panels. The small of ozone was thick in the air and was almost enough to give him a panic attack. He grabbed his head, trying to block out all of the painful memories as they rose to the surface.
After doing that weird breathing routine Sam had showed him he stumbled over to Danny. His eyes were closed and he was held down with heavy straps that were built to hold him.
He peeled away the locks on the restraints and freed Danny, who, unfortunately for Bucky, was a light sleeper.
In a flash he was on his back, Danny’s hand at his throat and gleaming green eyes. Bucky gasped for air, prying at the fingers squeezing his windpipe.
“D...Danny,” he choked out. “I...It’s...us.”
The fingers loosened slightly, Danny looking at him, confused. After a few moments he stood up, leaving Bucky’s throat all together. Bucky shakily stood up after him, slowly and steadily.
“Come on, Danny, let’s take you home,” Bucky said. Danny turned to him, toxic eyes now desperate for answers.
“Who’s Danny?”

100 Days of Comics! 084/100: Batman #237 (1971)
Today’s pull from the box of ever decreasing mystery is a Batman! From 1971!
This particular physical copy of the book is missing its cover. But I can’t be too upset. Its older than I am. I’m holding paper that is older than me. Also its a big beefy book with not only 25 pages of comic but a reprint from Detective Comics #37 from 1940. Content!
Also, this specific issue is a special Rutland Halloween story. I’ve covered Rutland, Vermont’s Halloween celebrations a couple times from the Marvel end so its neat to see how the other half lives.
We start with a dead Batman, staked to a tree. Is this Red Rain?
But on the next page, Dick Grayson and his college chums are taking in the Rutlan Halloween Parade, with one becoming increasingly fascinated by the parade floats. Granted, he’s been up three days cramming for an art exam.
Also, you may remember that on Marvel’s side of things, they use thinly veiled expies the Squadron Supreme to stand in for the DC characters that people will be dressed as at the parade.
DC just up and puts Marvel characters in the parade. There’s an off-brand Captain America, a Quicksilver mostly hid behind a float, and just Havok.
Dick and pals are headed to Tom Fagan’s Halloween party when they see some thugs beating up a fellow dressed as Robin. Dick and co intervene and Dick almost managed to beat up the thugs without coming off too Robinish but the float obsessed art major gets in his way to demand if he saw those outasight floats.
Still, the thugs are chased off. Costume party Robin says the thugs seemed convinced that he was the real Robin. But something seems fishy so on the pretext of hunting down the float maniac, Dick splits off from his friends to go investigate as TEEN/YOUNG ADULT WONDER, ROBIN.
And that’s when he finds dead Batman. Or rather, dead someone in a Batman Halloween costume.
And then the Grim Reaper bursts out of the darkness and menaces Robin with a scythe. This is less whimsical than Marvel’s Rutland stories tend to be.
While dodging, Robin trips over a rock and falls off a cliff, knocks himself unconscious, and starts drowning in a very shallow stream.
And the float maniac wanders by blissfully unaware, trying to find someone who will talk floats with him.
Luckily the real Batman is really in the area for reals and happens to spot the hapless college-aged boy wonder. He takes Robin to the mansion of Tom Fagan to be ministered by Doctor Gruener.
Gruener is in fact the reason Batman is in town. He was once an inmate of a concentration camp run by Nazi Colonel Kurt Schloss, aka the Butcher. Obviously a real bad dude who did a lot of torture and killing.
Gruener happened to spot Schloss while shopping for a gift for his daughter. The store clerk told Gruener that Schloss had retned a pirate costume to be delivered to Rutland, Vermont. Schloss apparently really loves masquerade parties.
Obviously, Gruner alerted the authorities. Hence why Batman is here.
As for the thugs beating up Robins and murdering Batmen. Well, some of Schloss’ ex-underlings are hunting him for the Nazi gold he stole. They must be trying to take care of Batman and Robin before they can interfere.
But since Robin is too injured, now it is Batman time.
He heads downstairs and runs into Tom Fagan who praises his Batman costume and the muscles that go with it. A nonplussed Batman just stammers that he exercises a lot.
And at the party we see Havok again, claw-hammer collander-helmet variant Thor and someone just dressed as Spider-Man but calling himself Webslinger Lad.
Someone once told me that the Squadron Supreme seemed a really disrespectful way to spoof DC but at least Marvel tried to put some layers between spoof and thing being spoofed.
Outside, float obsessed art student tries asking the Grim Reaper if he digs floats and then realizes its the Grim Reaper and runs screaming for help.
Float Guy runs into Batman who examines the body the Grim Reaper left and tells Float Boy to hide somewhere but not to breath word of the murders. If a panic gets out, they’ll lose their chance of nabbing Schloss. And if you can’t bring in Nazis to face justice for their crimes then civilization is a farce. And that’s from Batman.
Batman notices that the light in the tower of Fagan’s mansion is blinking in morse code and realizes it must be the thugs. He runs upstairs, missing a man in a pirate suit hidden in a cupboard and beats up some thugs.
The thug spills the beans with Batman implicitly threatens to drop him off the roof. They observed Schloss arrive in a yellow car so they rigged it up to explode.
And before Batman can warn Schloss the car explodes.
So three people have died, including an innocent man whose only mistake was dressing up as Batman. But the case still isn’t closed. The Reaper is still out there and responsible for killing the man in the woods.
And Batman knows who it is and goes to the site where the fake Batman was killed.
Oh, hi Thor, Spider-Man, and Havok again.
Batman confronts the Reaper. The men chasing Schloss had no reason to know Batman was around, not unless someone told them. And Doctor Gruener told them after having a change of heart and deciding to take personal vengeance on Schloss.
Gruener lost his parents and sisters in the concentration camp and watched Schloss laugh as they died. He still awakes from sleep screaming even after all these years.
Batman says he has no right to judge but neither does Gruener. And there’s not enough water in that stream to wash the blood from the hands of anyone who takes a life! Better way! Etc!
Gruener swings his scythe around, smacks Batman in the chin and then runs off. A part of Batman wants to let Gruener go, seeing some of himself in him. BUT NO HIS WAY IS WRONG!
Meanwhile, Float Guy is on top of the dam telling his college chums about meeting Batman and the Reaper and he’s at least stopped talking about Floats. Also his name is apparently Alan. Which I’d probably know if I read issues before this about Robin’s college adventures.
Then Gruenereaper comes charging along and demands that Alan get out of his way. In frustration over Alan not moving fast enough, he goes to swing the scythe at him but notices a star of david necklace that Alan was wearing.
And ashamed of what he has become, Gruener involuntarily takes a step back. Right off the damn. Where he falls and dies. He’s dead. That’s how this issue ends. Gruener dead lying on the dry side of the dam, star of david necklace conspicuously wrapped around one of the handles of his scythe so its framed obviously in the panel.
Apparently this issue was inspired by two things. A real life spooky occurrence at Tom Fagan’s real life spooky Halloween party when Berni Wrightson tried to scare the other DC staffers when they were exploring the forest by positing that someone in an orange wig from the party was hunting them through the forest because he hated comics artists and writers. And then they heard rustlings in the underbrush...
The other half of it was Denny O’Neil’s friend Harlan Ellison suggesting he do a story about Nazi war criminals. Put ‘em together and what have you got? Bippity boppity boo.
I don’t want to go longer by covering the reprint. I’ll just say that Batman investigates a conspiracy to create an international incident that he coincidentally overhears when he gets lost and stops for directions at a spooky house. World’s Greatest Detective.
He also kills a man, indirectly. The guy threw his sword, Batman blocked it with a door, and later punches the dude so he stumbles into the sticking out blade part and dies. And Batman basically says ‘good, I’m glad he’s dead.’
But this reprint was from Detective Comics #37. And in Detective Comics #38, Robin was introduced. Batman probably stops murdering so much when he has an impressionable child around.

Avengers: Endgame
Captain America
This article consists of nothing but massive Avengers: Endgame spoilers. You’ve been warned. We have a completely spoiler free review right here.
Ever since Thanos showed up in the mid-credits of the first Avengers movie, there was one scenario that most comic book fans knew was going to one day happen: Captain America was going to at one point lift Thor’s hammer Mjolnir and bash Thanos’ stupid face with it. Until Hela broke Mjolnir in Thor: Ragnarok. Then we all went, “Oh, never mind, I guess,” and thought about what could have been.
Well, time travel is funny like that. It gives you a mulligan. Avengers: Endgame gives us one of the most triumphant moments in superhero movie history, when Captain America is able to lift Thor's hammer, Mjolnir, and use it to beat the ever-lovin' crap out of Thanos for a few minutes. Not only can Captain America lift Thor's hammer, he's able to call down the lightning just as Thor would. It's a huge, cathartic, and historic moment in the history of the MCU, but it's something long familiar to Marvel Comics fans.
How Can Captain America Lift Thor's Hammer?
Simple: Steve Rogers is worthy. The inscription on Mjolnir reads "Whosoever holds this hammer, if they be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor." It doesn't matter how strong you are, if you aren't worthy, you can't lift Thor's hammer, no matter how hard you try. It's why Thor, at a low point in his life, is so relieved to find that he can still call and hold Mjolnir when he travels back to the events of Thor: The Dark World.
In Avengers: Age of Ultron, we got the slightest hint of what was to come when Cap was able to slightly budge the hammer when trying to pick it up. Thor's reaction shot there was priceless, and teases the moment in Endgame when Steve finally gets to call down the lightning. Of course, the big payoff in Age of Ultron was that Vision (not Cap) was able to wield it near the end of the movie as a way of proving his fidelity, but many of us knew that there was more to it, including Thor, who exclaims "I knew it!" when Cap gets his big moment with the hammer.
There is comic book precedent to Cap picking up Mjolnir. While not the first non-Thor character to pull that off in Marvel canon (that would be the delightful Beta Ray Bill), he’s had a couple moments where he’s been able to prove his worthy worth and cracked some heads with the uru metal.
Here’s some American history with a mix of Asgardian shop class.
THE ORIGINAL
The Mighty Thor #390 (1988)
Tom Defalco and Ron Frenz
Around this time, Steve Rogers had lost the right to be Captain America and just fought crime as "The Captain." This meant dressing exactly as Captain America, but in a black costume with red and white stripes on the front. Thor stopped by Avengers HQ, saw this guy with head wings and a shield and went, “I never saw you before in my life! Who are you?!” Then he threw Mjolnir at him in mid-sentence before realizing that it had to be Steve Rogers because of how fast he could dodge the attack.
I swear, Thor must scream, “STRANGER DANGER!” whenever Jane Foster gets a haircut.
Cap later explained his whole status quo, as well as his current feud with Iron Man (that happens a lot). So the government considered him an enemy and he was at odds with Iron Man for ideological reasons. Same as it ever was. While Thor mused over all this, one of his villains, the god Seth, sent an army after him. Cap, of course, helped out his stupid, stupid friend.

Thor dropped his hammer after being tackled by generic grunt Grog. Grog tried to lift Mjolnir, but couldn’t budge it. Instead, he started torturing Thor with a laser. Cap didn’t quite understand the whole “worthy” gimmick at the time and figured it was just really heavy. Even though Grog, a brick shithouse of a miniboss, couldn’t do it, Cap decided it was worth trying.
Wouldn’t you know it, The Captain picked it up and wiped the floor with the dogpiling goon squad. He tossed it back to Thor, who proceeded to finish off the bad guys.
Afterwards, Thor admitted that while he had no idea what was really going on with Steve and Tony’s current argument, he sided with Steve due to his ability to pick up the hammer. Cap nodded, rushed into a Quinjet, and flew off to go break Tony Stark's nose several times over.
THE HELLSCAPE OF APOCALYPSE
What If? Featuring X-Men: Age of Apocalypse (2007)
Rick Remender and Dave Wilkins
Age of Apocalypse was a pretty big deal in the '90s and the world it depicted was a nasty one. At least it had Magneto’s X-Men to make some kind of difference to offset Apocalypse’s evil. Naturally, Marvel’s What If series had a couple of takes on the big event. One had its continuity move forward and show how that Earth would have handled the coming of Galactus. One had Legion succeed in killing Magneto in the past, showing a world where Charles Xavier could better fight for a world where mutants were accepted.
Then there was this ridiculous one-shot where Rick Remender came up with the idea of Legion accidentally killing both Magneto and Xavier. The event had terrible repercussions, leading to governments to discover the existence of mutants earlier and going straight for the persecution. Apocalypse made his big appearance and the world got weirder than in normal Age of Apocalypse continuity. For one, Apocalypse’s army included a nest of Peter Parker clones connected by a big Venom symbiote blob.

The resistance team included the likes of Nate Grey, Molecule Man, Wolverine, Colossus, Thing (with robot arm), Doctor Voodoo (introduced a year or so before Brother Voodoo was the Sorcerer Supreme in canon), Captain Britain in Mach I Iron Man armor, and the leader Captain America. With no real context given, he wielded Mjolnir throughout the story and constantly fought maskless.
The whole issue was mainly these Defenders jumping from one spot to another, facing different threats and gradually losing members. Towards the end, Nate Grey killed Apocalypse, stole his armor, killed Molecule Man, and opened up a portal to the past so they could prevent the deaths of Xavier and Magneto. Fearing that Grey would become a tyrant as bad as Apocalypse himself, Cap killed him via Mjolnir and allowed the portal to close.
He and Wolverine were the only survivors of the adventure.
WAR OF THE WORTHY
Fear Itself (2011)
Matt Fraction and Stuart Immonen
Fear Itself was a Captain America/Thor crossover idea that Marvel decided to turn into a full-on event. It was...there. The tie-ins were better than the main plot, honestly.
The Red Skull’s daughter Sin came across a mystical hammer that transformed her into the deity Skadi. She helped unleash forgotten Asgardian god The Serpent, who in turn created seven hammers that would possess and empower those worthy of unleashing fear. They were Hulk, Juggernaut, Thing, Titania, Absorbing Man, Grey Gargoyle, and Attuma. Then Nazis in mechs started swarming Washington DC and the whole thing was a big mess.

Around this time, Bucky Barnes was Captain America and the story partly existed to have Bucky fake his death and move the Cap identity back to Steve Rogers (and you thought Endgame treated the Bucky/Steve relationship poorly?). A lot of good it did for him, as The Serpent was able to shatter the shield with his bare hands.
To turn the tide, Tony Stark and Odin made some special weapons for the superheroes to wield. As for Cap, he simply found Mjolnir lying around on the battlefield and used it to go to town on Skadi. They hyped all this magic weapon stuff up like crazy in the adverts, but the whole thing was really background noise. The fight just kind of ended after Odin pulled away all the hammers and Skadi went back to being Sin.
THE MIRROR MATCH
Secret Empire (2017)
Nick Spencer and Steve McNiven
And then there’s this load. Nick Spencer did a lengthy story about Steve Rogers revealing he was really an agent of Hydra all along. Marvel was really adamant that it was really Steve Rogers and that he wasn’t being mind-controlled. Also, the company insisted that Captain America wasn’t a Nazi because Hydra weren’t Nazis. TOTALLY DIFFERENT THING. Because, you see...look over there!
Hydra Cap then turned out to be a version of Steve Rogers created by a little girl with reality-warping powers (sure), who was manipulated by Red Skull. Cap ended up taking over the US and shockingly beat up opposing superheroes via wielding Mjolnir. That too seemed to be a product of the reality-warping as the inscription/rules of the hammer were different and you had to be a bulky Hydra asshole to pick it up.

By the end of the event, the little girl conjured the original version of Captain America to beat up his please-don’t-call-the-Nazi-a-Nazi doppelganger. When Hydra Cap went for the hammer out of desperation, it had already reverted back to normal and he wasn’t worthy enough to pick it up. Regular Cap picked it up and walloped his douchebag counterpart.
"Your ass will never be America's ass." (not actual dialogue)
Yeah, everyone knew that the status quo would return in the end, but the whole Hydra Cap business was as well-timed and tactful as showing off your chainsaw and hockey mask to your son, in the middle of the night, when Sideshow Bob is trying to kill him. It also killed the end of Gerry Duggan’s otherwise legendary Deadpool run, which I can never forgive.
HONORABLE MENTION
There’s only been four comic scenarios where we’ve seen Captain America wielding Mjolnir, so let’s just move those goalposts a little and talk about times when superheroes have kicked ass with the shield AND the hammer at the same time.
First up is Crusader from an issue of What If based on the original Secret Wars that showed what would have happened had all the heroes and villains been stranded on Battleworld for 25 years. While some died in that time, others got busy and we got a new generation of heroes and villains. One of which was Sarah Rogers, daughter of Cap and Rogue.
read more: Marvel Movies Watch Order - An MCU Timeline Guide
No, the comic doesn’t answer the question of how that conception worked.
Even though her boyfriend Bravado was the son of Thor and Enchantress, it was Crusader who ended up being able to pick up the hammer and turn the tide against Vincent Von Doom. She also had stolen her dad’s shield from his closet when he wasn't looking, but that’s less impressive.
Then there’s Superman. The miniseries JLA/Avengers was the final crossover between Marvel and DC and it finished with a bang. Leading both hero teams into battle, Superman was entrusted with Captain America’s shield. During a pivotal moment, in order to break into the villain Krona’s stronghold, Thor threw Mjolnir to Superman. Superman caught it and smashed his way in.
read more: Does Steve Rogers Still Have a Place in the MCU?
Later on, after the dust had cleared, Superman found himself no longer able to lift it. As Thor put it, Odin may be strict, but he knows when to cut you slack when times are desperate.
I have to imagine we’ll be seeing more Cap/Mjolnir moments going forward. Marvel really seems to enjoy having comics imitate movies that imitate comics. God, remember when Spider-Man 3 came out and comic Spider-Man just happened to start wearing black again?
