Miguel Jontel Pimentel (October 23, 1985) is a singer and songwriter who specializes in contemporary and alternative R&B. Raised in San Pedro, California, he began pursuing a music career at age thirteen. After signing to Jive Records in 2007, he released his debut studio album, All I Want Is You, in November 2010. Although it was underpromoted upon its release, the album became a sleeper hit and helped him garner commercial standing. The album’s second single, “Sure Thing” reached further success in 2023, peaking at #11 on the Billboard Hot 100 and becoming his most commercially successful song to date.

After Jive’s dissolution in 2011, he moved to RCA Records and released his second studio album, Kaleidoscope Dream (2012) to continued success, spawning the hit single “Adorn.” His third and fourth albums, Wildheart (2015) and War & Leisure (2017) further experimented with psychedelic and alternative influences, the former peaked at #2 on the Billboard 200 while the latter contained the single “Sky Walker, which received triple platinum certification by the Recording Industry Association of America. He incorporates R&B, funk, hip-hop, pop, rock, and electronic styles into his music.

He was born and raised in San Pedro, California. He is one of two sons of an African American mother and a Mexican father. His parents divorced when he was eight years old. He was introduced to the older R&B his mother listened to and his father’s musical tastes, including funk, hip-hop, jazz, and classic rock.

In eleventh grade, he was introduced by a friend to a member of the production company Drop Squad, and he spent the rest of high school learning his way around a recording studio before seeking a record deal.

R&B star Miguel is back from a three-year break with a new EP and a BBC streetwear show. He shares how he’s making art with purpose.

When Grammy award-winning artist Miguel took a hiatus from music in 2018, he was at a crossroads. In the three years since, he got married to model and actress Nazanin Mandi Pimentel, but also faced his first real battle with grief after losing a close family member. Met with both the beauty of marriage and the fragility of time, he began to reassess his priorities. “One of the most valuable things would probably be not taking the real love in your life for granted,” he begins. “I have no regrets about the time I got to spend with the loved ones that I’ve lost.” A dim red light illuminates Miguel’s warm and inviting smile as he shares the highs, lows and lessons he’s learned during one of the most transitional periods of his life so far.

Miguel is on a quest for authentic connection in an age where the opposite has become the norm. His discography has always explored the thrills and fantasy of sex, love and lust. Now he’s ready to get more intimate. “Honesty is what I miss in the music. I’ve put up a front,” he admits. “I’ve smiled when there was a lot going on in the back of my mind, and I’m kind of getting to the point where I don’t want to do that anymore.”

Growing up, Miguel says he didn’t see enough people discuss mental health. He hopes his vulnerability will be a catalyst for more open conversation. “When you come from underserved communities and [a] minority background, you’re born into a survivalist mentality,” he shares. “Even my father. He has a psychology degree. He’s been a teacher for 15 years now. He knows about psychology [but] will not go see a psychologist. That’s where we come from, and that’s OK, but I think there’s a tremendous amount of value there and I want to be an advocate for it.”

Miguel speaks with calm introspection as he describes the importance of seeking clarity. “If you don’t have clarity on where you want to go, the likeliness of getting anywhere aside from where you are is low,” he states. “You might get caught in a current that will take you somewhere else. You might end up stranded.” He explores the concept of choice in the fourth addition to his 2012 Art Dealer Chic EP series, Art Dealer Chic 4. “Art Dealer Chic is my way of explaining that everyone has the option to choose the destination, to choose the way that they steer the ship.”

Alongside a re-release of the previous three EPs, his fourth project features silky vocals, existential lyricism and escapist production. If Art Dealer Chic 4 was a gallery, Miguel says that the jewel of the collection would be the EP’s intention: “You have the choice to continue to believe the things that have been instilled in you, the ones that serve you and the ones that don’t serve you,” he explains. “The music is a vehicle to say this is how I’m exploring my thoughts and my patterns. I’m going to show them to you so that you can do this for yourself.”

Today, Miguel is a household name in R&B, but his relationship with music has shifted away from industry expectations. Authenticity and integrity are far more valuable to him. “For a long time, business, especially for music, has been about grabbing as many people as you can all at once. How do you cast the largest net to grab the most fish? There are so many people doing fishing in this way that we’re losing the quality,” he laments. “I don’t come into my studio going, ‘How can I write a hit?’ It’s probably more about, ‘How can I connect with someone?’”

Miguel is now expanding into television, too. He’ll be one of the judges on the BBC’s upcoming streetwear show, The Drop. He’s excited to use the platform to spotlight sustainable designers. “We’ve got human businesses being built at the expense of ecosystems. Unfortunately, the sector that contributes a lot to this is fashion,” he says. “I want to help inform new brands to think about sustainability from the beginning because we’ve seen how challenging it is for larger, established companies to change direction.”

In the last decade, Miguel has transitioned from creating music for survival to building his ideal future in real time, simply by making his art and lifestyle more intentional.

Podcast Hosts Apologize For T.I.’s Ghastly Gynecology Gossip

The fall out from T.I.’s disturbing reveal about taking his daughter to the gynecologist continues. The two podcast hosts that gave the Atlanta rapper his megaphone on this occasion have apologized for not pushing back on his ghastly rhetoric.

Nazanin Mandi and Nadia Moham, hosts of the Ladies Like Us podcast, admit they should have said more than just awkwardly laugh while Tip detailed taking his daughter on yearly visit to the OBI-GYN to ensure her virginity.

The duo issued a statement on their socials basically saying, “Our bad.”

“To everyone confused, angry and hurt by the recent episode of Ladies Like Us, we want to start off by saying that we sincerely apologize for our knee jerk reaction to the uncomfortable topic,” reads the start of the mea culpa.

Mind you, the laughter didn’t seem all that awkward, and the topic was discussed for a couple of minutes. But, we’ll give them the benefit of a doubt.

They added, “We were completely caught off guard/shocked and looking back, we should have reacted much differently in the moment.”

Ya think? But to their credit, at least they have apologized. It’s still been radio silence on Tip’s end. That’s how you know the gregarious Atlanta rapper is aware he done f*cked up, and is trying to figure out how to make amends.
