the crows ugly fucking necklace is the single best thing in all of Tamora's works, it appears in such a dramatic scene Aly's on the verge of losing her alliance with her god she's having a breakdown and kyprioth goes "oh yeah that wager I'm doing with the crows its so the crows get the single ugliest fucking necklace ever." and then the crows win and Nawat just has an ugly as shit necklace forever now. perfect writing thank you Tamora.

Trickster's Queen spoilers!!
Just realised that Aly is both spy master (autocorrect keeps changing that to 'spam aster' which is also a career goal) of a country immediately post-revolution AND pregnant by 17 or 18 years of age. The epilogue of Tricket's Queen also implies that she has taken off her anti-pregnany charm and planned for children before their wedding.
There was no rush for her!!! So young and so busy running spy networks etc. Why doesn't she just enjoy some time being young and in love first?!
But I love it all.

Since we DID just read some Tamora Pierce and I DO love your yelling, if you wanna have Some Takes: Aly/Nawat? Alanna/Jon?
Happy to get out here and do a little Tortall yelling!
Aly/Nawat
I remember liking this pairing when I first read these books, but then again, I remember liking these books themselves a lot more when I was a teenager too! There's just a lot here that doesn't work for me these days, unfortunately. Nawat is interesting when he's a crow, and then neither his Born Sexy Yesterday thing or in the second book his "I'm a MAN now" thing do much for me, to start. And then Aly doesn't actually seem interested in him as a person! Attracted to him, sure, but nothing really beyond that, and I don't buy the way their relationship progressed in the second book when she had to do without him. Just not a lot of chemistry there for me! I like Nawat, but he and Aly aren't a good match.
Alanna/Jon
As an endgame ship, I'm VERY glad that Tamora Pierce changed her mind when she expanded her original book into four. But I really love that Tamora Pierce has her characters have crushes and relationships with people who aren't their endgame love interests! So for that reason, I've got some fondness for this ship. That being said, I remember thinking at some point that wow, Pierce had to jump through some hoops to get Jon to start being an asshole in Woman Who Rides Like a Man, but nah, on my most recent reread, Jon's an extremely consistent person, bless him.

Nawat Crow
@unfavorableinstigation
"Hello, Aly," the newcomer said in a pleasant baritone as she approached. His skin was dark, but not raka brown - more like her da's coloring than a raka's. His eyes were brown, long-lashed, and deeply set on either side of a long, thin razor of a nose. His cheekbones were sharp, his chin square with a hint of a point. His mouth was long and slender, the lower lip fuller than the upper. He wore his short black hair tousled, as if he'd combed it back with his fingers. He was nearly six feet tall, with a wiry build. The way he moved, Aly half expected him to leap straight up into the air at any moment and not come down.
Nawat Crow is not boyfriend material.

“Many babies,” piped one of the darkings on the cradles.
“Only three.” Aly said it wearily. Nawat had the feeling that she’d said it several times already. “The bigger one belongs to Terai. As for triplets, it does happen, from time to time.”
“Darkings never see before,” another of the creatures remarked. “Only ducks have so many.”
“Chickens,” said another darking.
“Geese,” added a third.
“Before we name all of the animals you know who have more than one child,” Taybur said, his voice quiet but firm, “it is time to leave. These babies need to sleep.”

Aly, upon marrying a bird-man and getting pregnant: Fraternal twins run on my side of the family and my husband is a literal bird. There is no way I'm pregnant with more than one child.

"I do not approve of one of our kind changing his shape just for a mortal," the Dawn Crow remarked stiffly.
"You must ask Nawat if he cares," replied Sky.

"What if I don't want to cut up aloe leaves?" Tris demanded softly.
Rosethorn's voice came back through the arch. "Ask me if I care what you want."
