ultimately house of leaves is a blind mans analysis of a documentary about a house, with footnotes added by someone spiralling
but thats wild enough that people’s theories are all over the place. Zampanò is Johnny’s grandfather but also made him up and everyone is just Jesus in purgatory

The most defining feature of the minotaur in House of Leaves is the fact that he isnt there. Of the three main characters, navidson is in the maze but doesnt know he exists. It is implied Zampano is killed by the minotaur. Johnny gets coded as the minotaur while also living in fear of it. The etymology of the word echo…

ugh okay i will probably add this later when i look up the proper vocab but
i just got to page 461 which has a small block of the letter X repeating, and a section in the center which are in bold.
the thing that gets me is that reading the book is what gives the context needed to “read” the image produced. cause its not just a random block of letters. its in the middle of an intense scene and suddenly: you can see what he sees. you learn that translation without knowing you would need it.
#he already did it with the rzz thing#i cant think of this stuff to much or it drives me up the walls#probablyrambles#navidsonblogging#reading pictograms

well i went n translated the braille (pg. 423) because the footnote is formatted:
"xyz" — [Illegible] — Ed.
and the braille literally spells out the word illegible. it even has the em dash and brackets. ⠙⠁⠍⠝⠊⠞⠀⠠⠍⠜⠅⠠⠵⠲

i peeked at the forum and didnt see anything but (pg. 376) footnote 349 has a comment from the editors that says, “Inexplicably, the remainder of this footnote along with seventeen more pages of text vanished from the manuscript supplied by Mr. Truant.”
my main thing is that first word, “Inexplicably,” bc JT then goes on to describe how 40 pages were ruined by ink. obvs the number discrepancy is weird, but there is an explanation given. so im not sure why the editors would specify that

Johnny’s note on page 380:
“I remember [my mother] had amazing hair, like sunlight, extremely fine and whisked with silver, beautiful even when it was uncombed…
…I guess I do remember that part. Someone saying "my own safety." My father I imagine. I suppose I also remember him leading her away. At least the shape of him in the doorway. with her. All blurred and in silhouette.”
This still-frame (pg 662) from "Exploration #4" that happens to fit that description:
