14 Essential-Listening Taylor Hawkins Tunes

… that aren’t “Cold Day in the Sun”!

1. Pitiful (Taylor Hawkins & the Coattail Riders)

One of his most emotionally raw tracks. I love the strange chords he used on the acoustic guitar to convey the somber depiction of guilt and shame associated with drug addiction described in the lyrics. This is a really painful song to listen to, but it’s beautiful.

2. The Path We’re On (Nighttime Boogie Association)

Matt Cameron and Taylor share vocal duties on this tune (Taylor sings the verses, Matt sings the choruses). Their voices together are pure heaven! Also features Melvins’ Buzz Osbourne snd Steven McDonald on guitar & bass. This group unfortunately only put out 2 songs during the pandemic, but they’re a magical 2.

3. I Could Be Somebody Else (NHC)

Psychedelic in every aspect of that word, this one is best experienced cranked with headphones. Trippy as hell. Dave Navarro was right when he said Taylor is a mind-blowing lyricist and singer. Another emotionally raw tune, when he said one of NHC’s songs makes him feel naked, I think he was referring to this one.

4. Running In Place (Taylor Hawkins & the Coattail Riders)

This song takes you on a journey. It eases you in, then crescendos into classic prog-influenced chaos before it turns to a stream of pretty guitar work and layered vocals as it drops you back off. Taylor said this one was something he wrote talking to himself, trying to bring himself back down to earth and not go crazy. “The Teacher” by Foo Fighters almost certainly took inspiration from this song - the breakdown is nearly identical, and the “…say goodbye” outro is very similar.

5. Too Much for My Own Good (Phil X & the Drills)

This song by Phil X features Taylor on the drums. This is such a fun rock & roll tune that will definitely be stuck in your head for days but you won’t be mad about it. Every person I’ve ever played this to has loved it!! PS- you’ve definitely heard Phil X before, his discography as a studio musician is wild.

6. You Drive Me Insane (Taylor Hawkins & the Coattails Riders)

I love the trippy riff and the vocals in this song, it’s a California rock & roll vibe and it’s one of my top favorites of his. One of his sexier tunes he said was written about Mrs. Alison Hawkins.

7. Southern Belles

No group credited as he played every instrument and sang this one! (I think the bass is either Chris Chaney or Nate Mendel, but I couldn’t find out for sure). This is a heavy-hitting, super catchy one about his southern family roots. Really under-appreciated track from the same EP that gave us “Range Rover Bitch”.

8. Never Enough (Taylor Hawkins and the Coattail Riders)

Taylor’s vocal range doesn’t get talked about enough… The cathartic way he belts his heart out at the end of this song gets me every single time. His voice was so beautiful. Another of that emotionally raw side of his music.

9. It’s Ok Now (Taylor Hawkins and the Coattail Riders)

Another earworm, this one’s rhythm is bound to make you move. His voice is pure rock and roll. I think you can really hear how much his songwriting impacted the Foo Fighters’ music on this album, even though many people think Dave told everyone what to play…when you really listen, that doesn’t seem to be the case. This song feels like summer sunshine to me.

10. Guess I’ll Go Away (Edgar Winter)

Taylor on vocals for “Brother Johnny”, a tribute to Johnny Winter album, this was one of the last things he did musically. He SLAYED that shit. He sounds so good. Rock and fucking roll.

11. Louise (Taylor Hawkins and the Coattail Riders)

I have no idea how he played that drumbeat and sang this song at the same time. Mind boggling. This song is so unique and so catchy, I don’t get why it wasn’t a hit. The rhythm section is my favorite part of the whole thing, Taylor and Chris Chaney locked in together SO well. It’s no wonder they played together from the Alanis days all the way up to him putting the ‘C’ in NHC.

12. Fearless (NHC)

This is a Pink Floyd cover…But it’s an amazing one! It’s groovy and trippy and they’re so locked in together, they were made to play music with each other. NHC unfortunately has a very small discography, otherwise I probably wouldn’t have selected a cover…but maybe I would’ve anyway, this one is just so good!

13. You’re No Good at Life No More (Taylor Hawkins and the Coattail Riders)

Taylor and Dave Grohl split the vocals on this one and it’s such a wild ride. You can really hear his Queen influence throughout this album… so much so that he manifested Roger Taylor’s appearance on the last track! D&T’s voices together are magic as you hear on “Rope” by Foo Fighters and their cover of “Come Together”, I always wish they sang together more often.

14. Perfect Day

Only a minute long, this beautiful song is just Taylor and his guitar. A sweet reminder he wrote for Mrs. Hawkins that his love is always with her no matter where he goes. I’m sure she treasures this one. There’s so much love in it.

Bjorn drops the metal pipe with a clatter, staring down at the bashed in face of the District 3 male tribute. He staggers to his feet, spitting out a glob of blood as he distantly hears Lucky Flickerman making his announcements, his cheerful voice fading to nothing but a mere buzzing in his ears as he stares down at the mess of flesh, what used to be a 15 year old's face.

He chokes back his vomit, wiping his bloody hands against his grimy t-shirt.

It's not his first kill.

That boy used to be someone. He had a family, friends, a life.

Bjorn had taken all of that from him.

He hadn't wanted to, had fully intended on waiting the kid out, on keeping to himself.

Both he and 3 had been forced to the Cornocopia by these... spider like creatures. They were strange in appearance, and Bjorn knew he'd be seeing them in his sleep for the foreseeable. If he even got any sleep ever again.

3's face turning to mulch beneath his hands. 7's face going a horrible shade of purple as he sobbed and kept the pipe pressed over her throat. The life leaving 2's eyes as Bjorn shoved the broken pipe end through his throat.

Navarro's lifeless eyes staring at him, accusatory, it was his fault she'd been speared through the heart, why hadn't he been paying more attention? Why had he let her die? Why hadn't he paid more attention to the District 2 tribute? Maybe then it would be Navarro standing here and not HIM?

He doesn't know which is worse, truth be told. You watching him kill, watching him at his lowest, watching him starve and sob and lose himself. Or you not watching at all and finding things out second hand, him having to explain everything he's done to you.

It's not long before he's picked up by the Capital, before they tut and shake their heads over every bruise, every cut, his hollow cheeks, his longer hair, the stubble growing on his face.

He longed for you. Your sincerity, your warmth. He longed for the biting cold air of 12. Longed for those parties the Covey threw, now that their music had been banned, it had become more of an underground thing lest any Peacekeepers attention be caught. Longed for shitty beer and warm bread fresh from the bakery. Longed for the thick, dense woods that surrounded his district, for the secret gap in the fence that didn't get electricity to it that meant freedom, however brief.

His summers had been spent laughing by the lake with his family, with you curled into his side, ever since you'd both turned fourteen and acknowledged the feelings creeping up on you both, taking root like a stubborn plant that refused to be plucked.

His chest ached, for it was absent its heart. It resided firmly in 12, with you, right where it belonged.

"Eventually, handsome," the woman waves him off, picking up a pair of scissors and getting to work on his hair. "You've gotta give your last interview, first! And get the honour of President Snow crowning you the winner, oh, imagine!"

Bile rises, which he struggles to force back down. He focuses on the sound of the scissors snipping at his hair, closes his eyes and breathes.

if you’re hearing CROSSFIRE by STEPHEN playing, you have to know STEFAN NAVARRO (HE/HIM; CIS MALE) is near by! the 34 year old SELF-DEFENSE INSTRUCTOR has been in denver for, like, 3 YEARS. they’re known to be quite OVER-PROTECTIVE, but being LEVEL-HEADED seems to balance that out. or maybe it’s the fact that they resemble MICHAEL TREVINO. personally, i’d love to know more about them seeing as how they’ve got those running shoes and exercise at the break of dawn, every possible minute spent in the midst of ocean waves, him alone is huge empty mansions vibes. and maybe i’ll get my chance if i hang out around the CHERRY CREEK DISTRICT long enough!

As the first born and only son of Alexander and Layla Navarro, Stefan had everything any child could ever want except the presence of his parents. They were far too busy with work and growing their own empire to spare any time for their son. When Stefan was six, his father brought him to his hometown Denver (which he had moved out of right after high school) and left him with his grandparents to raise. He was given all the wealth and luxury. But Stefan was allowed to visit his parents only during holidays, and that was about it.

Stefan realized at a tender age that his parents had no love for him, they only had expectations from him and responsibilities for him – it had weighed him down. He was expected to be perfect and nothing less, with his grades, the way he behaved and even with the friends he made. To his parents’ delight, as he grew up, Stefan turned out to be exactly as they had expected – the perfect son they could brag about to anyone and everyone. He had is own social circle and friends of course, but all through school he worked hard to maintain the straight As because he knew far too well his parents would not accept anything lesser from him.

While he loved his grandparents, he was his father’s son and the small town life wasn’t enough for him either. He soon left Denver and went to Business School like his parents wanted, and that was when he began to experience life the way he wanted. He loved the freedom which came with leaving the small town, dropping out of school, and beginning to travel far and wide whenever he could and experience life to the fullest. Every weekend was a new trip with new people, and with time passing, he wished to return back home lesser and lesser but he did nevertheless, quite often, for unlike his father, Stefan appreciated the love his grandparents showered him with.

He refused his parents insisting him to join the family business and instead when he was ready for a steady career, he trained to be a paramedic, which was quite the opposite of what his parents wanted from him but it was something he chose for himself. His parents were disappointed in him but he was happy, and he began to build a more permanent life for himself soon enough – a career and soon even love.

He married the woman he loved and had a kid with her, and everything seemed perfect. It was a fairy tale life, except happily ever afters didn’t really exist. His wife died in a car accident two years ago and Stefan spiraled. He loved his family more than anything, keeping them safe and happy had been his biggest priority – and something snapped inside him when Mara died. And had it not been for his daughters he would have completely lost his path.

Having been unable to live in a place with all of Mara’s memories, he moved back to Denver three years ago in the hopes of getting better and while it seemed like his kids were settling down, for Stefan it wasn’t really that easy. Only recently has he come to accept the loss of his wife and has begun to move on.

Staff member Christian Jay says the store uses Facebook to boost sales, while the team works hard to serve customers, even when things get busy. AdTech Computers, owned by Rex with admin support from Anne Dizon, has been serving tech enthusiasts and professionals since 2010 in Iligan and 2018 in CDO. Technician Phyll Joseph "PJ" Oanes notes that AdTech offers a variety of products, from basic to high-end, while providing support services like repairs and customization. Instead of growing quickly, AdTech focuses on building a skilled team and providing quality service, believing customer loyalty matters more than fast expansion.

Mr. Quencher

Joana Tan-Señor’s Mr. Quencher, founded in 2018, specializes in fresh juices and smoothies, with a signature pineapple drink sourced from Bukidnon. Despite issues like fake orders from delivery apps, their 20-strong team stays focused on customer service, even educating customers on avoiding scams. Team leader Sir Peng says patience is key, as success takes time.

I couldn't believe that I was living in England. I had been wanting to live here since I was a little girl. The weather. The people. The all around different vibe there was compared to the states. I had been a states girl for so long but yet my mind would always drift to the other parts of the world but no matter what I did, where my mind would wonder it would always trace back to the UK. I had so many friends out this way that they felt more like my family than my own real family. I rarely saw my sister except maybe on the holidays if she wasn't too busy for us, I always thought it was the perfect excuse so she didn't have to talk to Dad or see Emily. I did see Dad a lot but that was because of work and to be honest I needed to put distance between us. I felt like a boyfriend whose girlfriend was too clingy.

As I sat there unboxing near to the last box I had big plans of heading into town today and grabbing the essentials that one would need for a cozy stay. I had to send a few sketches for work then I was going to be free from any other obligations for the day even if Shane said there was going to be a surprise awaiting me yet I had no idea when or where this "surprise' was getting here. I had this little excitement in hearing that I had a surprise coming for me, it was like telling a kid on Christmas that something big was coming.

"One more box." I told myself as I plucked one more. I took the box knife and cut the tape to fix a note on top of a picture frame it read:

"New place. Thought you might like to put this up.

Love Dad."

It was very rare for my Dad to show emotions but on even more rare occasions we would get little letters like now. It was never a letter to tell you how proud he was, or that you were doing a good job. It was little notes in things he would think you might like. I took the floral wrapped tissue, it was so thin I could make out that it was a picture frame one that I had never seen around the house hanging up or even just out on one of the tables. This was a picture he kept very hidden and I had a feeling I knew what it was.

There in the picture was a little baby girl dressed in a little baby romper that looked like it was homemade or knitted and now that I think about it, hearing the stories from her past I believe it was made by her. It was my mother and me when I was only a few months old. Her smile, her eyes, even her stature looked so much like me Dad would say, maybe he didn't mind the distance from me because I reminded him so much of her.

My Mom Josie Navarro came from Catalina Mexico when she was only two years old. My Grandpa was hell bent on giving his little family a better life in the states, what he didn't know was that his only daughter was going to marry a very wealthy man, he would give her the life he never imagined, and treated her even better. Grandpa Chavez past away long before Mom ever got sick and long before my sister or I were ever born. Mom was so close to her family Dad would say so when Grandpa passed away Grandma had gotten sick and Dad had her come live with them till she passed away that same year. The Chavez family fled Mexico for a better life but it wasn't long before life caught up to all of them. Half my family was gone before I turned the age of five. Mom had gotten riddled with cancer shortly after I was born. It was two long years of her battle, two long years my Dad stood by her side, taking her to all the best hospitals with the best doctors but it was everything was set in stone for my family. I believed in signs, my Dad said "She' believed in signs and that's what she told my Father just days before she passed:

"Edgar, this was all meant to happen my love. You will grieve. My daughters won't remember me but give them the best Mom you can find. Teach them to be good girls and don't think for one day I am not watching over them. This was meant to be my love but I will forever love you no matter how far I am." Her letter to my Father was the most loving letter she could leave along with two other letters for her daughters yet I hadn't read mine yet even though I was given mine on my eighteenth birthday. I didn't have the courage to read her final words to me, her final words to her last daughter she barely got to hold and cherish before she fell ill. I walked around most of my life wondering what was missing and now that I am nearing the age of thirty, I know now I am looking for her in every woman I see her age. I wonder if she would be happy, would she be proud, would she be loving? I missed out what it was like to have that motherly figure even if Emily was a great stepmother (sort of) to us girls but she was always hesitant in what her role was for us.

The Navarros' are the Gallaghers from Shameless. The kids basically raised themselves.

They all were born and grew up in South Hills.

These kids learned survivors instincts from the get, and they raised hell for just as long. The oldest daughter was the head of the family, she is the one who took over most of the care. Ryat is the second oldest, and he also took a big part in raising these kids.

A lot of the background of the siblings is UTP. What they're doing. Rather or not they made it out of South Hills, or if theyve been to prison. If their lives are together, or if they still figuring shit out.

THE TWO THINGS THAT ARE SET IN STONE, HOWEVER: The second oldest daughter, Abigail, did get pregnant with she was a teenager. She currently had a teenage son who's around 14, and named Noah at this moment. How she does as a parent, etc etc is UTP. The other thing is that there are 7 NAVARRO SIBLINGS. There is also a 17 year old named Maddison, who at the very least, still lives at the Navarro family home.

Their parents are Richard and Kelly Navarro. Kelly would spend some time in prison and when she came out, she'd link back up with her no good husband, and the birth of the last Navarro child came nine months later.

Kelly would overdose when Maddi was 1, while Ryat held her.

Their father, Richard, nicknamed Dick, by most of the kids, is still in the picture. He like a cockroach that won't die, and he is often found bumming around the Navarro house.

This family is BIG dysfunctional. They didn't grow up with good parents, and usually had to fight their way through life. But the one thing they are is close. Ryat loves all his siblings, and growing up, they really only even had each other. This, of course, doesn't mean they don't go rounds with each other...

When is Normal Again.

I'd been thinking to myself a lot about this.

March 17th 2020. That's when the schools shut down after spring break. My oldest started spring break excited to go back to class. Then she couldn't.

March 20th 2020. We were in full lock down mode, have to work from home.

Jan 17th, 2023: we're still working from home

I can't even properly describe to my young kids how weirdly.. unassuming life was only 3 years ago today.

I look back on videos and photos, and I see essentially a completely different world than what's out there today.

Things that have come back to normal… are different now.

(For context, my oldest was in Grade 1 on Spring Break when her world got flipped upside down. My youngest was only 2 years old. Her entire conscious life has been under this pandemic, and her whole world is dominated by the environment and society it's created in the aftermath.)

My oldest got to enjoy making some early memories out and about with people she loved, doing adventures on the sky train, going to malls, indoor playgrounds, fairs, and school events. Some loved ones, by the way, who are no longer with us by the time my province started relaxing measures, and who never got to see the other side of covid measures.

We try to do a bunch of the things we used to do, but the vibe is completely different now. Pre-sign up to an indoor playground because now they limit slots to like 20? Pre-Schedule going to the swimming pool? The malls are.. effectively gutted and sad now, not much in them survived.

What's worse, my oldest used to enjoy going to extracurricular classes like cooking, art, dance, etc Nowadays she's lucky to get into swimming lessons. Everything else gets canceled on her due to "lack of interest" because no one is sending their kids to these things anymore.

My youngest by the grace of whatever deity has been able to enjoy some ballet classes.

My oldest however misses all these activities she used to be able to do. Her excitement to show us the new thing she baked. Her genuine enthusiasm over bringing home a new painting or paper craft. It's been almost 3 years since she's last been able to enjoy these.

My own world with my own interests has changed rapidly too. I dont want or need a lot. A computer, primarily. Some basic stuff like DnD rule books and such. I even got into firearms ownership as a Canadian, but even there I didn't seek much, just some basics.

But of course, thanks to the supply chain and production issues, it's made everything i'm apart of a scalpers paradise. I've been finding a lot less joy in these things. Mostly because I just want to forget anything better than what I have might be out there, because it's become to damn unattainable at this point, it might as well be.

And then the inflation hit. Now my family and I no longer live comfortably. In just a couple short years, i've gone from a life of, honestly comfortable plenty, to a life where im back living paycheck to paycheck. I didn't leave my employer, in fact i've been there 9 years this March. Im not making less, in fact i've never made more in my life. The rapid inflation, new installation of poorly timed taxes, and strained production rising prices across the board for just about everything..

I don't know, man.

It's been downright depressing watching my world, my country, and my province deteriorate into shittiness around me, and stay that way or get worse. Yeah I know there's people out there who have it far worse than me, but im allowed to feel this way too.

I wonder.

I really do wonder.

If I'll ever see a day again where I can wake up, take a nice breath, and go "Yeah, ok, this is close enough to the way things felt in October of 2019."

Ryat managed to catch Fey at her front door. He wasn't sure if she was coming or going, but at this moment, it didn't matter. "Hey," He greeted, placing a foot on the first step that led to her porch, "You busy tonight?" He asked, aware that the answer didn't matter either way, because he already had a request for her. "If you are, reschedule." He arched a brow, "Before you throw the first punch, your moral support is needed tonight, and since you're like an unfortunate part of the family..." He trailed off, not needing to explain more.

Gazali Walker

The King of Paradise, arriving in 1726. A group of foreigners trick Gazali and his village into traveling with them to profit off of his powers, and when the villagers retaliate, it’s total bloodshed. Gazali is the only one to survive, because the celestials make contact and pull him through to their world. They tell him of his true power; complete control over their dimension, where he can live forever without growing old. He uses this to create a kingdom for the other people that the celestials bring through, people who have suffered like him. Gazali is a kind king, though he has the energy of a golden retriever.

Pedra Castillo and Josephine Navarro

Pirate wives from 1730. Josie met Pedra in a garden during a ball, where they confided in each other over Josie’s desire to be with a woman and Pedra’s desire to be seen as a woman. They decide to take a boat and sail across the world to a place where they can be themselves, but are attacked by other pirates. The cannon fire destroys the boat and sends them into the water, which brings them to Paradise. Gazali tends to them, offers them the sanctuary of Paradise, and gets the celestials to grant Pedra the physical form that she wants. Now, the two ladies get to perform music for everyone.

Javi Álvarez and Alex Whittaker

Arrive in 1819. Javi is the third-eldest of four heirs to the Álvarez kingdom, and Alex is their new gardener from Ireland. Their relationship is a secret, as is the fact that they’re both trans, but Alex met an anomalia (a Freak) who changed his appearance, while Javi is stuck in his current form. After Javi’s brother dies in battle, Javi tries to come out so he and his sisters aren’t married off to preserve their status, but his family thinks he’s gone mad. They find out about his relationship with Alex and blame him for corrupting Javi’s mind, making plans to execute him the next morning. Javi breaks Alex out and runs away with him, leading them both to Paradise. Gazali helps Javi the same way he helped Pedra, and he and Alex become the life of the party in Paradise.

Harry Cooper and Cecilia Finley

Arrive in 1865. Cecilia loses her daughter to illness just before the war starts. Her husband left a long time ago, so her only solace is her best friend Harry, who is looked down on in town because he doesn’t want to marry. They plan to escape north to freedom while everyone is distracted by the war. Many people try to stop them, almost killing Harry along the way, but he and Cecilia escape through the river and make it to Paradise. Cecilia becomes a gifted dancer, while Harry gets to write poetry and novels.

Deliah Hodge and Molly Flynn

Arrive in 1978. Deliah is the rebel of her family, riding motorcycles and cutting her hair much shorter than any other lady would. Molly dreams of being a fashion designer, but her visions are deemed too outlandish, and many people in town are hesitant to buy from a lady of color. Deliah falls in love with her and her dreams, and offers to take her across the country to New York. They actually get to Paradise by just going for a swim during their trip, but they love the vibes of Paradise and stay to open up a joint-tailor-shop-and-salon. Molly gets to make clothes for people who actually love her ideas, and Deliah gets to cut hair for other women like her that don’t present traditionally feminine.

Ruhi Mandal

Arrives in 1980. She wants to be a boxer, despite her mother’s embarrassment, and her only true supporters are her childhood friends, Viraj and Avir. Her family arranges her marriage to Viraj because he’s a respectable doctor, even though Ruhi loves Avir, who her mother hates for being an artist. Luckily, Viraj is also in love with someone else, and they plan to confess during their wedding to prove their families wrong, but they both end up confessing to Avir. While the families cry out in outrage, Avir confesses that he only has feelings for Viraj. Heartbroken, Ruhi lets them both leave before the families can hurt them. They run away, and while the guests settle down, Ruhi overhears that her mother is already arranging her marriage to another man to save the family from ridicule over their undesirable daughter. With no one left to turn to, Ruhi decides to jump from the cliffs by her house to spare her family. She ends up in Paradise, and everyone is incredibly comforting. Ruhi gets to become a boxer, and though she still has many depressive thoughts, her new girlfriend Cecilia is there to take care of her.

Frank Gonzalez

Arrives in 2008. Works for Ves Corp as one of their new doctors, and starts enjoying a casual relationship with his soldier friend, Rio. Their boss, Vesely, asks Frank to make him some standard vaccines, and he does. As Vesely starts asking for higher dosages, and many coworkers start disappearing, Frank becomes suspicious. Rio begs him not to look into it under the pretense that he might be fired for breaching privacy. Frank pries anyway, and discovers that his vaccines were genetically combined with Vesely’s powers to act as a Freak-serum, which horrifically mutated his coworkers with the help of a viral parasite. Feeling responsible and deducing that Rio knew about it the whole time, Frank destroys his next batch of vaccines and runs away, stumbling into Paradise. He shuts himself away in his new doctor’s office, Gazali and his friends are slowly coaxing him back out.

Joseph Kingsley

Arrives in 2015. Joe was sent to Ves Corp because his parents had enough kids in the house and couldn’t deal with looking after a Freak. His extra arms make him a welcome addition, and he’s just trying to get by in his new home. Of course, things start taking a turn with the relentless testing and harsh scientists. Joe finds comfort in one of the new caretakers, Jason Rhodes, who has been mentally destroyed by the loss of his godson. As Joe helps him find the will to live again, Jason looks after him as best as he can, promising that Joe will have a long and happy life. But Jason is moved to a new division, and Joe’s teammates start dying from the testing over many years. Joe is scared for his life, but he finally finds freedom after someone frees all the patients. With no home to go back to, Joe ends up in Paradise. He becomes a great chef who everyone loves and confides in, to the point where he’s the only person who can actually talk to Dante until the others arrive later.

SPOILERS AHEAD 

Breaking Dawn–Part 1 begins a few months after the events of the previous film, showing us many of Bella’s loved ones receiving invitations to her and Edward’s marriage. We see Jacob receive an invitation, and as a result, he turns into a wolf and skips town. 

The night before the wedding, Bella has a dream of the event with all her friends and family there, and like her, wearing white. The dream ends with both her and Edward covered in blood, with them standing on a the ever-growing pile of Bella’s dead loved ones from bites of a vampire. 

After this dream, Bella, with the help of Alice and Rosalie, gets ready for her wedding. She enters wearing a simple-yet beautiful white fitted gown to a a crowd full of her family and friends, with Edward waiting for her at the end of the isle. They marry, and all is to celebrate.  

During the reception, Jacob returns after he had skipped town after receiving an invitation for the wedding. Bella and Edward happily exchange their vows and are married. Bella is thrilled to see Jacob, and the two share a dance in the woods. Bella admits that she and Edward plan to consummate their marriage on their honeymoon while she is still human, and Jacob becomes furious, knowing that this could possibly kill her. Sam and the other pack members restrain Jacob before he phases, and they leave. 

After the wedding, the now married Bella and Edward spend their honeymoon on Isle Esme, and they have sex for the first time. The morning after, Edward realizes that Bella has numerous bruises and is upset at himself for hurting her, and vowed to not have sex again until she is a vampire. 

Two weeks after their wedding, Bella vomits after waking up and notices that her period is late. Alice called Bella to ask if she was alright, as she saw a vision of something happening to Bella. She then talks to Carlisle, and Bella tells him that she believes that she’s pregnant. Edward is distraught because he knows that it’s highly unlikely that a human will survive giving birth to a vampire baby. Edward tells Bella that Carlisle needs to remove the baby, and Bella refuses, wanting to keep the child. She confides in Rosalie, and she acts as her bodyguard. They fly back home to Forks, Washington, and the baby rapidly grows. 

Jacob rushed over to Cullen's house to see Bella. Bella is now heavily pregnant and is pale and underweight. Jacob is upset by Bella’s daily health and says that Carlisle should terminate the pregnancy to save Bella. Bella ignores both Carlisle's medical advice and Alice’s visions of her pregnancy, allowing the pregnancy to therefore progress. Bella soon realizes that the baby is craving human blood and she begins drinking human blood supplied by Carlisle from the local hospital. Bella’s health improves and the baby grows at an alarming rate, and as half-vampire, the fetus’s growth is accelerated more than a human one. Edward’s dislike for the baby lessens when he begins reading the baby’s thoughts, and Bella and him share a tender moment with their unborn child. 

Then, Bella’s backbone breaks, and she collapses. Edward and Jacob realize that Bella cannot cope with the pregnancy, so Edward, Jacob, and Rosalie begin a C-section on Bella. Rosalie begins the procedure as Carlisle is out getting blood, but due to her hunger for human blood, Bella’s blood tempts her greatly. Jacob stops her and Edward picks up the blade and finishes the procedure. The morphine that Bella was given has not spread yet, so the pain she is experiencing is excruciating, and she falls unconscious. 

After Bella wakes up and sees her healthy daughter, she chooses the name Renesmee, a combination of both her and Edward’s mother’s names. Before anyone knows it, her heart stops beating. Jacob desperately tries to resuscitate her with CPR while Rosalie takes the baby away. Edward then injects Bella’s heart with vampire venom in order to transform her, but it appears to be futile as Bella remains completely lifeless. 

Panicked, Edward begins chest compressions. Jacob tells him that he won’t kill him, as it will be greater punishment for Edward to spend eternity knowing he was the reason for Bella’s death. Seth and Leah tell the pack that Bella didn’t survive the birth, and Jacob goes back inside in an attempt to kill Renesmee, as he believes that she is the reason for Bella’s death. After locking eyes with Renesmee, Jacob sees all the future versions of her and decides not to kill her, but imprints on her instead. 

When the werewolves learn of Bella’s “death,” they travel to the Cullen’s in an attempt to kill Renesmee, fearing that she is too great of a threat. Edward, Alice, and Jasper defend their home with the help of Leah and Seth, later assisted by the rest of the Cullen family. Edward reads Jacob’s mind, and announces that Jacob has imprinted on Renesmee. The wolves’ absolute law is that they cannot harm anyone who has been imprinted on, so they leave. 

Edward’s venom heals Bella, and she is cleansed and dressed. Over the course of a couple days, her bite marks heal, and her broken back and chest repair. Finally, the transformation is complete, and when her eyes open, they are blood red. 

In the mid-credits, Aro, Marcus, and Caius receive a letter from Carlisle announcing that they have a new member of the Cullen family. Aro informs the two that their feud is not over yet, as they still have something that he wants. 

Breaking Dawn–Part 1 translates key events from its source material onto its screen. The film is followed with romance, passion, and of course, none other than Bella and Edward’s wedding, honeymoon, and long-awaited consummation. 

When compared to Eclipse or even the first installment of the series, Breaking Dawn–Part 1 gets pretty underwhelming after Bella and Edward’s honeymoon. I feel like this big moment between these two characters was built up to a point where me, along with the millions of other teenage girls watching the series, were disappointed. I knew what was going to happen, Edward would somehow hurt Bella (destroying what seems to be every piece of furniture in the process) and still give off this “I’m dangerous, stay away from me” vibe. 

That being said, Breaking Dawn–Part 1 and Part 2 come from the same source material, so it's understandable that one feels a little more underwhelming than the other. The most excited I got when watching this film (after the honeymoon scene, of course) was when Bella woke up from her seemingly dead but not dead vampire transformation, and her eyes were blood red. There’s something about watching a character completely transform into something else. Bella, for three movies prior, was written to be sweet and demure, and give off this “damsel in distress” sort of feeling. But when she wakes up with blood red eyes, it's saying, “Everything now, as you know it, is about to change.” 

I could only imagine seeing this film in theaters on opening night. Sadly, I was eight and a quite bit too young to see any of the installments in the series. However, I remember that the series was everywhere. You could not escape the Twilight craze, or the teen romance vampire craze, for that matter. Breaking Dawn–Part 1 changed the course of the whole series. We get the excitement, but dangerous, and sometimes bothersome Cullen clan dealing with a new matter–Bella Swan becoming a vampire.

Maitane López: «We are more tactical and therefore we play a very different football»

Our first 'C' in this tremendous trident is Maitane López Millán or also known as “the smile of the Liga Iberdrola” or “Mai”.

She says that it is something natural but unconsciously gives off that 'good vibes' energy that makes the interviewer (in my case) feel like being with a friend drinking something.

And before you start it is important that you understand that ...

For this and subsequent occasions, I have decided that my interviews can be taken as a souvenir home. For Maitane I drew half a soccer field on an A4 sheet and put 11 representative photographs of the player in question, symbolizing the number of components of a team. Her name also appeared in large print, a drawing of a book (later you will understand why), an orange and a star. Once the rules of the game have been explained, I give it to her and when she sees it, she smiles and immediately says, "Very original, really." And with an Aquarius in each hand, Mai begins uncovering the first photograph and ...

Photograph 1 (Maitane as a child) M: Oh! (She laughs). My beginnings, right? I started with 4 or 5 years, all my paternal family was related to football my father, José Ignacio López Rekarte, my uncles, Luis María and Aitor López Rekarte and my grandfather, Luis López. Until one day I came home and told my mother to sign me up. And of course, my mother didn't know anything about women's football in Mallorca because we had just moved from Murcia, and she decided on the Son Cotoner club, which was later renamed Sporting Ciutat de Palma. (Laughs) This anecdote is very funny because with 4-5 years I went to train, and my poor mother told me "don't be sad if they don't pick you", and on the first day, I went up two categories!

ESF: Did you play with boys? M: Yes, until there was a moment that another girl came who became my best friend. At age 12 I was beginning to notice inequalities between men and women because we are biologically different. But I never had problems with any teammates, they were more screams from the stands than anything else. In fact, I keep in touch with some of them.

Photograph 2 (Maitane with her uncle, Luis María López Rekarte) M: My uncle ... has always been my role model (snorts). I still remember this picture, I can see the smile on my face ... It was radiant. Imagine, thanks to him I could have access to my idols, that is, I was next to Kovacevic, Nihat, Xabi Alonso etc.

Really, I had devotion to him, when he came to play against Mallorca, I brought all my friends and they freaked out, for me he was my idol and he was the one who pushed me to continue.

ESF: Is your uncle going to see you at the matches? M: Yes, and my whole family when we play in Zubieta.

Photograph 3 (In his second football team: UD Collerense) M: Colle ... I was in Sporting Ciutat de Palma until the second division and then I went to Collerense for three years and I was a little scared of the reception because they are rivals to death, but nothing, everything was great (smiles). This club has been my trampoline, a super humble team with very few resources that gave me the opportunity to play in the first division and over at home. I think it is worth considering that the club has been 5 years in the first division (seasons 2011-2016). I take great friendships, in fact the day after tomorrow I will stay with them. But for me Sporting is special because I entered with 4 and left at 15-16 years of age there.

I've searched for it near Bunyol to get everything on time. The truth is that I've been trying to get my degree for 7 years (she laughs). No, I have not suspended any exams, the thing is that because of football I could not do the practices. And now yes, I have TFG, practices and memory, and that's it.

ESF: And that's it? M: Yes!!! (Smile from ear to ear). I've been doing this for 7 years, but it seems normal, but it's good to combine studies and be a professional football player. Although I have always been clear that I wanted to do both for what could happen, I also believe that when I leave this sport, I would like to dedicate myself to what I have studied, since it has nothing to do with football.

Photograph 5 (First day in the east) M: Incredible... Levante UD has given me everything, Colle was the springboard, but in this club I have evolved both personally and professionally. In addition, I had never lived alone outside home but this team welcomes you and takes care of you so much that I adapted very quickly. And it’s that (laughs) I'm still hallucinating that they iron our clothes and leave us folded in the locker room, really, I’m grateful for everything and I feel immensely happy in Levante UD.

Photograph 6 (Selection) M: I did freak out there, in fact I was with my partner on a off weekend in Salamanca and I was in a bad mood, Jorge called me and asked me how I was and I told him that great, and he told me that I was going with the National Team to Prague. It was a dream for me, to train with them, some of them were already friends ... Now they are in the United States and I wish them the best of luck.

(laughs again) Obviously I don't realize it and although it sounds like a cliche I think you have a better life smiling than crying. Also in the team along with Rocío we are the ones who pull pranks... and Lucia and ... Eva (laughs). And nothing, you just have to enjoy everything you do.

Although Ona is not so much now because she has already grown but Eva is... And I love having them on my team and having met them, it is one of the most beautiful things that football gives you and I am very grateful for it. I love them a lot.

I am very much the kind of person who goes with a book to read sitting alone in the street (stares at me and smiles) don’t think it’s weird if you see me one day out there or on the beach giving a walk… In addition, whenever I am a little sad, I feel immense desire to play the guitar and I think… (raises her index finger) “What's wrong with you? You have been playing for half an hour, two hours… ” (Laughs) It is true that my 'gorritis' suffer a lot, although many times it is them who ask me for songs, and we start singing and dancing all three. We have a lot of videos being dumb together (laughs).

ESF: Favorite singer? M: Ainoa Buitrago! (she doesn't doubt a minute)

Photograph 10 (Stadium) M: From the final of the U19 European we lost, I think that defeat has helped me a lot to mature as a footballer. A few years later, you value being a starter in a final. In addition, we faced the Netherlands with some very good players, moreover, the one that scored a goal was the now Arsenal striker and an undisputed starter of the Dutch national team, Vivienne Mediema. And I think about it and I still hallucinate having played that final.

ESF: Do not worry, it is a very old photograph and almost nothing differs. They are the British Ladies Football Club, the components of the first women's soccer team on March 23, 1895 in England. What do you think? M: In the end I think they were the first to open the doors. It is true that now we are being given more visibility and I think we are collecting the reward of all the work not only ours, but since that March 23, 1895. And in the end, we are so grateful to them that they were the first as to all those who have fought for equality both inside and outside the football field. For example, to me past generations like Sandra Vilanova, Melisa Nicolau etc. All of them have opened the door for us here in Spain in many things.

ESF: What do you think of the collective agreement? M: Every step is important. Everything is improving, now there is a sub-20, sub-15 and before it did not exist, I think it is progressing a lot and faster and faster, although there is still much to improve.

ESF: And about future generations? M: I think we have to keep working so that in the future, girls can get to live football as boys do.

ESF: What do you think of the phrase 'girls don't entertain? M: Well (snorts) it's football and it's another kind of show, you don't have to compare men’s football with women’s football because I've said it before, we're biologically different and therefore, we play differently. We don't have as much speed, aggressiveness as they do… We are more tactical and that is why we play a very different football. That’s it.

Female football star M: The best player in the Liga Iberdrola is ...? (sound of drums) Jennifer Hermoso. And the one that is very good but is not given media hype… Mariona. (She laughs)

Favorite book M: I love reading and this question is always a problem for me but ... ' Contra el viento del norte’ by Daniel Glattauer oe ‘La mecánica del corazón' by Mathias Malzieu.

Food ESF: Star dish, favorite ... M: Well, let's see ... (laughs) If you like to eat well, you have to know how to cook. And I know! I love to eat, really, but for football I have to reduce certain foods. For example, my star dish, which is to suck your fingers is: crusty bread, with a layer of provolone cheese and another of hot foie. (close your eyes) Mmmmmm. Really, great. But this I can only allow once every two months (she smiles) that then you have to go out play.

ESF: Thank you very much Maitane, really, ESF thanks you for your time and your sympathy. M: Thanks to you and ESF that I get along great with many of that media. Goodbye, see you soon (smiles and leaves).

there was some bridge of uneasiness when the seeds rolled into town but your parents had other priorities. the opening of their shop; navarro’s. a gun emporium in the hills of the whitetails mountains. ideal for all of your hunting needs, but oh, you were always the black sheep of the family. the only one not a true navarro. you nearly died at eleven years old due to your parents’ and their negligence while you toiled away at the workshop, became the laughing stock of your family ‘til you were happily handed over to your aunt and cousin; adelia and necalli, who were already prone to being the subjects of unruly whispers and shared glances.

your siblings dropped off like flies as the project at eden’s gate began to swell, because they wanted something more than guns, grease and the family’s gifts to protect. ultimately, you don’t blame them, joseph seed’s sermons are too good to pass up most days but you’ve never been the religious type, and god ain’t exactly on your side. you end up helping your parents take care of the shop until the worst thing happens. your parents sell it, and everything in it to the seeds. they join, because if you can’t beat ‘em. join ‘em.

they knew you’d be pissed, hell, they didn’t even give you a chance to grab the schematics you had in the shop.

it’s cruel, but not unlike them, anything to drive that knife just a little deeper. 

their music is catchy, if it wasn’t for the fact you found them fucking insane you might even think they’re decent people. however their mac and cheese is watery and simply does not pass the vibe check. you wish you were that petty, but the truth is something gnaws at your bones when you see them. like prey, every sinew and bone tells you to run; to flee, to do what prey does but you don’t you stay because part of you thinks you should’ve died as a child. that you can’t cheat death, you can only avoid it for so long.

you want to fight, but you’re no good at it. you want to scream, but your voice is shaky at best. you’re prey, you’re prey that makes very very good weapons. so you better start praying for real because your family, the one were born into… they’re coming for you, and navarros don’t generally settle for anything less. if the seeds want you with them, the navarros will make sure it’s done. whether you want it or not.

Goapele Mohlabane(1)(2) (/ˈɡwɑːpəleɪ/; born July 11, 1977), is an American soul and R&B singer-songwriter. Her name means to move forward in Setswana, a Southern African language.(3)

Early life(edit)

Goapele's South African father Douglas Mohlabane was an exiled political activist who struggled against the Apartheid System.(4) Goapele's New York-born Israeli Jewish mother Noa(5) had been attending protests since the age of 12. Noa attended Friends World College and was studying in Nairobi, Kenya, where she met and married Douglas.(6) Goapele and her older brother DJ Namane Mohlabane(7) were raised in a California South African exile community.(8)

Both of her parents inspired Goapele to become very involved in community affairs at a young age. She attended the Berkeley Arts Magnet School, where she led a pre-teen peer-support group. She also became involved in various groups and organizations that combated racism and sexism.(9)

Goapele and Theo Rodrigues(10) have a daughter together, Bahia Osun (born May 2007).(11)(12)(13)(14)(15)

Goapele returned to Oakland after her time at Berklee College of Music, where she concentrated on writing and recording songs. In 2001, she self-released her debut album, Closer, which sold 5,000 copies.(16) At the same time, she was building a devoted audience through her popular live performances in the San Francisco Bay Area. 'Closer' peaked at No. 63 on Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.(17)

In 2002 she reworked Closer, adding five new songs. With the help of her family, she formed her own independent label, Skyblaze Recordings, to oversee her musical career. She released her first nationally distributed album, Even Closer, featuring the single 'Closer,' through Hieroglyphics Imperium Recordings. 'Closer' was also featured on the soundtrack of the 2003 movie Honey. In 2004, Columbia/SME Records picked up Skyblaze Recordings for worldwide distribution and rereleased the album with additional tracks. She co-wrote and co-produced the entire album, which is a mixture of neo-soul, trip hop, lieder, and jazz. She also toured North America with the band Spearhead. In 2004, Even Closer peaked at No. 24 on the Billboard Charts for Top Independent Albums.(18)

Her second album, Change It All, featuring the single 'First Love' and the song 'Love Me Right,' was released December 2005. The album featured production work from Jeff Bhasker, Mike Tiger, Amp Live, Sa-Ra Creative Partners, and Linda Perry.(19) In 2006 the album peaked at No. 32 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip Hop Album Charts and No. 2 on the Top Heatseekers while the single 'First Love' reached No. 18 on the Hot Adult R&B Airplay.(18) Goapele appeared on Soul Train to promote the album in May 2006, in what turned out to be the show's final new episode. She also appeared on The Orlando Jones Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Late Night with Conan O'Brien, ABC View from The Bay and FOX Good Day Atlanta. Her first three releases have garnered praise from the likes of magazines such as Rolling Stone, Nylon, Interview, Marie Claire, Billboard, Essence, and Vibe. She has appeared on the covers of local Bay Area publications San Francisco Magazine, Diablo Magazine, East Bay Express, SF Bay Guardian, Mugshot Magazine, and City Flight,(20) She was named the number-5 artist to watch in the July 2003 issue of Rolling Stone magazine, made the countdown on MTV’s Top 10 Artists to Watch, and collaborated with ALDO Shoes’ advertisement campaign in its fight against HIV/AIDS, which featured artists such as Avril Lavigne, Ludacris, Dave Navarro, Charlize Theron, Pink, Eve, Rosario Dawson, Eva Mendes, Bow Wow, Ziggy Marley, and Kelly Rowland.

Break of Dawn(edit)

On July 10, 2009, Skyblaze Recordings leaked the single 'Milk & Honey' (produced by Bedrock), the first single from her third studio album of the same title.(21) However, in August 2011, she announced that the album would be titled Break of Dawn. The album is being recorded at the Zoo, home of Goapele's Oakland-based Skylight Studios and will feature production from Drumma Boy,(22) Bedrock, Kanye West, Dan Electric, Mike Tiger, Bobby Ozuna (Raphael Saadiq, John Mayer, Erykah Badu), Malay (John Legend, Mary J. Blige), Jeff Bhasker (The Game, Kanye West, Ludacris, T.I), and other guest musicians. After many delays, the album was finally released on October 25, 2011.(23)

Victory(edit)

In celebration of the FIFA World Cup 2010 in South Africa Goapele released the single 'Victory' featuring South African emcee Hip Hop Pantsula, a prelude to her upcoming musical project Victory, which was released in Winter 2010(citation needed) and feature an array of artists from the African continent as well as throughout the Diaspora.(24) The leading track was recorded in English, Setswana, and Xhosa and tries to draw attention to the need for education and resources to combat Africa's most crucial dilemmas. The album will also encompass philanthropy, political and social activism. Proceeds from the project will go to ANSA (Artists for a New South Africa) a non-profit organization working to combat HIV/AIDS, assist children orphaned by the disease, advance human and civil right, educate and empower youth and build bonds between the U.S. and South Africa through Arts & Culture.(25)

In 2014, Goapele signed with singer Eric Benét's record label Jordan House and is in the process of recording new material for her new label.(26)

Strong as Glass(edit)

In 2014, Goapele released Strong as Glass, her fifth studio album. The lead single was 'Hey, Boy' featuring Snoop Dogg and the video was released September 10, 2014, on YouTube.

Human rights work(edit)

Goapele performed at rallies, demonstrations, and various political events around the world from Cuba to South Africa. On September 14, 2006, the California-based Ella Baker Center for Human Rights honored her with its first ever Human Rights Cultural Hero Award(27) during the center's 10th-anniversary celebration, which was titled 'Tribute to a Dream.' The following statement was issued by the Center regarding the award:

We are proud to name internationally acclaimed, Oakland-based (singer-songwriter) Goapele the first recipient of this award. But as successful as she is, Goapele remains deeply rooted in her home community and in the struggle for human rights. We first saw her sing at rallies and demonstrations when both she and Ella Baker Center were just starting out. Today, she is still here with us, side by side, looking forward to a better day for all of our people.

The Ella Baker Center for Human Rights is a non-profit strategy and action center. The stated aim of the center is to work for justice, opportunity, and peace in urban America.
