Photos I took at Lionel Hampton Trail, located in Atlanta. The trail has a number of creeks and rennovated/gentrified neighborhoods with old objects left from previous homes left behind. I have many more images I've taken, but these are my favorite from the bunch.

Day 8: Tre Cime and Cadini Di Misurina
Even though we slept really late last night because of the long drive and the very late dinner, we were still able to wake up around the time we had planned on getting up. We got up early today because not only did we need to drive about an hour to get to Tre Cime Nature Park from our AirBnB, we also had to make sure we got to the park at a reasonable time so that we could get into the park and find a good parking space and avoid any situation where we’d have to park far away and hike in to start hiking. After a quick breakfast, we sped along to the park and arrived around 8:30am. Once we paid our entrance fee, we drove up and found a good parking spot at Rifugio Auronzo without any issues.
After we put on some layers and packed what we needed, we headed out for the first hike of the morning to Cadini di Misurina, a short 1-1.5 hour out-and-back hike to a group of sharp mountain peaks just south of the Rifugio Auronzo parking lot. Unlike the weather we had encountered during our first attempt to visit Tre Cime Nature Park, today’s skies were clear and the sun was out in full force. Besides the low-hanging fog and clouds that swept through the area and the slight nippyness of the morning cold, it was a perfect day for hiking.
Because the trail out to the picturesque spot in front of Cadini di Misurina wasn’t super clear cut (with multiple paths you could take), it took some time for us to get out to the sharp peaks. And the fact that Cynthia was trying out hiking poles for the first time, adding a little bit of time to the hike. But we eventually made it. Cynthia stopped prior to getting to the very end of the trail so I solo-ed it all the way there, hoping to get some cool photos of the peaks. While the heavy, low-lying clouds passed through, I took some photos of the cool mountains and had some photos taken of me (by another photographer) standing in front of the mountains. The Insta Spot. Then I headed back to catch up with Cynthia who had already started hiking back to the parking lot.
Once we arrived back at Rifugio Auronzo, we took a short break and reassessed the next steps. After what happened last night and how physically and emotionally drained Cynthia was from it, Cynthia ultimately decided to bail on the Tre Cime hike and stick around Rifugio Auronzo for a chill day instead of exhausting herself on another hike. So instead of both of us starting the hike around Tre Cime, I went by myself. Just like good ol’ solo-traveling times…
Overall, the hike was really nice with spectacular views throughout the entire trail, especially at the Forcella Lavaredo viewpoint. For the first part of the hike to Forcella Lavaredo, it was pretty straight forward until you started hiking up an icy and snowy path to get to the viewpoint. It took some extra effort from my tired legs (from the hikes and lack of sleep the last few days) to push myself up there with my camera gear in tow. Once at the Forcella, the view of Tre Cime was awesome! And not only that, but there was also a cool WWI tunnel that led through the mountainside out to another narrow area. Pretty cool to see the remnants of history still intact here at Tre Cime, the site of major action in WWI and the location of the front lines of Italy and Austria-Hungary.
After some time spent at the Forcella, I continued on the icy, slippery, and snowy trail toward Rifugio Antonio Locatelli. This first half of the trail around Tre Cime wasn’t too bad except for the climb to Forcella Lavaredo and the icy section of the shady trail. Once I closed in on Rifugio Antonio Locatelli, I realized that in order to see the rifugio, I’d have to make an unnecessary climb up to see it. And I thought to myself, no way was I going to waste my energy and legs just to climb up and then climb down again. So I skipped seeing the rifugio and kept going.
The next part of the hike was just a gradual decline and hike across a small flat area to the foot of the Tre Cime peaks. The easiest part, of course. Then started the most exhausting section of the hike: the hike back up to Malga Langalm. That section was mean to my tired legs because it was a steady climb up to the next hut. But, like I do on all ascents, I just took one step at a time until I really needed a break. Then I’d take my short break and continue on afterward. Eventually I made it to Malga Langalm, where I took a slightly longer break to appreciate my beautiful surroundings.
The last part of the hike was not nearly as bad an ascent. Before long, after making a ton of stops to take photos and take breaks, I arrived back at Rifugio Auronzo with a clockwise hiking time of 3 hours and 47 minutes. Whew! I did it and made it back in good time! Though the hike did take much longer than I expected.
After I reunited with a happy and rested Cynthia, it was time to hit the road again for a long, long drive back to Florence. The drive back was pretty smooth and surprisingly enough, I was able to drive all the way back without significant fatigue weighing down on me. When we eventually made it back to Florence, we were welcomed with the confusing roads you always expect in European cities. It took a while to get to our hotel, Residenza Castiglioni, since the hotel was located in the middle of downtown, a great place to be without a car but a nightmarish place to be with a car. Long story short, we somehow found our hotel after some very difficult driving in very tight and crowded places and dropped off our stuff before returning the car back at the airport and taking the tram back into the city center.
To end our long day (and tiring week of road tripping), I dropped by and grabbed some McDonald’s on the way home from the tram stop to feed my hungry stomach. Once we were settled in our hotel room, I chowed everything down before calling it a night. Whew, what a whirlwind week rushing around Northern Italy with a car! Now that we’ve returned our car and are car-less for the rest of the trip, it’ll be nice to slow down a little and check out some cool cities.
5 Things I Learned/Observed Today:
1. In the Dolomites, you’ll notice one white stripe sandwiched between two red stripes painted on rocks or on tree trunks. This symbol marks the trail and the direction that you should be following. Don’t miss it!
2. Parking at Rifugio Auronzo can be a problem when you arrive too late in the morning, especially during the high season. But in the offseason, it’s a little bit of a different story. We got there around 9:00am and we parked in one of the first parking rows at Rifugio Auronzo. With tons of other rows still left to be filled. And it was a beautiful Sunday too. So rest assured if you’re traveling in the low season. As long as there isn’t terrible weather and you arrive at a reasonable time, you should be able to make it safely to the Rifugio Auronzo parking lot and park your car without significant issues.
3. The Tre Cime di Lavaredo hike was one of the busiest hikes I’ve seen in quite some time, especially during the pandemic. It was CROWDED! The easy access to the park as well as the beautiful scenery and easy first section of the hiking trail are probably all reasons why this spot is the most popular place to visit and see in the Dolomites. And the people here today? Mostly Americans and Europeans, local and from around the EU.
4. Driving in Florence is quite an adventure due to its crazy and strange road structure of turns, U-turns, and streets that cross at weird angles. Not to mention the nightmarish driving situation that is downtown/old town Florence. DON’T DRIVE In DOWNTOWN FLORENCE. Consider yourself warned.
5. The easiest and cheapest way to get from the Florence airport to downtown Florence is via the city tram for a cheap 1.50 Euros. So convenient and so easy! Kind of like the Denver RTD!
