The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) announced today an investment of $70 million in seven creative and visionary agricultural projects to transform the U.S. food and agricultural system and sustainably increase agricultural production in ways that also reduce its environmental footprint.
This Fiscal Year 2023 investment is part of the Sustainable Agricultural Systems program area of NIFA’s Agriculture and Food Research Initiative, the nation’s leading and largest competitive grants program for agricultural sciences.
The innovative program focuses on a broad range of needed research, education and Extension solutions – from addressing agricultural workforce challenges and promoting land stewardship to addressing climate change impacts in agriculture and filling critical needs in food and nutrition.
“Agriculture is facing a multitude of complex challenges,” said Dr. Chavonda Jacobs-Young, USDA Chief Scientist and Under Secretary for Research, Education and Economics. “We need all hands on deck developing creative, sustainable and strategic ways to feed, clothe and fuel future generations.”
The $10 million awards are for coordinated agricultural projects (CAPs), which are larger-scale and longer-term investments that integrate research, education and Extension efforts. These projects promote collaboration, open communication, information exchange and reduce duplication efforts by coordinating activities among individuals, institutions, states and regions.
“These research investments support exciting projects that integrate innovative systems-based thinking, methods and technologies to establish robust, resilient, and climate-smart food and agricultural systems,” said NIFA Director Dr. Manjit Misra. “These visionary projects will improve the local and regional supply of affordable, safe, nutritious and accessible food and agricultural products, while fostering economic development and rural prosperity in America.”
Explore the seven projects, which include the following:
At the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Dr. Erin Silva is leading a collaboration with the Great Lakes Intertribal Food Coalition, the Wisconsin Tribal Conservation Advisory Council, and the Menominee Nation on a transdisciplinary project that aims to scale up traditional Indigenous food production practices — practices that for generations have already been climate-smart and sustainable — by expanding production, processing, storage, and distribution systems, as well as education and Extension programs, that are needed to support integrated crop-livestock systems, cover crops, and rotationally-grazed cattle and pastured chickens.
At the University of Maine, Dr. Hemant Pendse is leading an integrated research, education and Extension effort to advance the bioeconomy by developing biorefinery technologies that will make the millions of tons of available low-grade woody biomass – which currently has a very limited market – more commercially viable in both the sustainable aviation fuel and fish feed sectors.
At Texas A&M AgriLife Research, Dr. Muthu Bagavathiannan is leading a project that seeks to transform cotton production in the southern United States into a more sustainable, climate-smart enterprise by applying improved precision management practices to increase carbon sequestration and reduce greenhouse gas emissions; enhance pest control, and nutrient and water management; and address labor challenges while creating new market opportunities.
AFRI, which also makes grants in the Foundational and Applied Sciences and Education and Workforce Development program areas, is designed to improve plant and animal production and sustainability, and human and environmental health. Grants are available to eligible colleges, universities, and other research organizations.

Quiver trees and Shooting Star
The Milky Way shines over quiver trees at Bet-El Farm in the Northern Cape of South Africa. The photographer used diffused LED lights to illuminate the trees rivalling the glow from the star above.

with current food prices surging, shortly after a global pandemic - where food was hard to access consistently, I'm seeing a huge boom of interest in folks orienting to growing their own food. As someone who has farmed for the last 10 years and is very close to starting my own farm, I just wanna re-widen the view a bit with some reminders. I know these last few years pertaining to food can lead one to a reactionary clinging, or rather a deep mental attachment, to dreams of farming that includes narratives of (food/self/community) sovereignty ... but there is a bigger truth that comes with working the land. A truth not so rooted in our human needs. MASANOBU FUKUOKA was speaking big truths in "The Natural Way of Farming" when he said, " We often speak of "producing food," but farmers do not produce the food of life. Only nature has the power to produce something from nothing. Farmers merely assist nature. ....The objective of natural farming is non-action and a return to nature ....
Modern agriculture has created nothing from nature. Rather, by making quantitative and qualitative changes in certain aspects of nature, it has managed only to fabricate synthetic food products that are crude, expensive, and further alienate man from nature. " Remember this as we continue, do not let the media lead to only think of food with scarcity in mind. do not attach to thoughts of sovereignty, especially food sovereignty, with scarcity in your body. lastly, do not think of farming only in terms of your needs, or only in terms of food production - there so much more that can live in relationship with working in the earth that still leads to your needs being met. In conclusion, start with the earth. if you're going to be an earth worker, start with your relationship with the earth - not your needs. if you are dreaming of farming as a way to meet your human needs/humanity's needs, you will absolutely move through mountains of depressions which feel endless and drain you. start with the nature. Understand that we got into the chaos that is agriculture today, through prioritizing our human needs mostly. We have the power to became farmers, earthworks, growers that don't do this but it requires us to think outside of our needs only - which is hard for us humans to do. especially with the inflation hitting our food prices and our most recent hardships with food access due to Covid.
#a musing on agriculture#a reminder that natural farming is a real study#one that is overlooked cause it includes narratives of spirituality#a note to aspiring farmers/food growers#our needs are loud right now#but we've got to find ways to grow out capacity out to still take care of the earth#and the non human beings the earth is holding#truth#personal

rattus rattus au Dagger is a Dagger whose parents were never brutally murdered and mutilated in front of him but that means he spent much longer living with an abusive father so he's really not anymore well adjusted but I guess he kills people less
#he still dealt with nomads and raffen a lot given the nature of their farm#and eventually he leaves with one of the cland on their way through#but doesnt fit in well/causes a lot of problems for them#so he abandons them when they get near NC#which is about when he starts the band#i jsut love playing with the idea of an adult dagger going back home for whatever reason and having to deal with his parents#maybe this will be the au where he actually gets to kill his father :-)#rattus rattus au

its been 7 hours in the poll so far and i saw the who ppl want to win coming but i wasnt expecting the who they think will win ngl, like i was expecting it to be a little more even but nope lol
#mine.txt#lifesteal spoilers#< jic#wanted to keep my opinion to myself until the poll ended to prevent influence or whatever but realized that was stupid so here it is#personally i want zam to win but i think theyll come to a stalemate#i want zam to win causeas cute as it would be to give zam a redemption arc and esp by minute of all ppl i just dont like that idea very muc#i want his redemption arc if he ever decides to have one to be long and gruelling and full of setbacks and last for seasons#i want him to keep failing and building himself back up and all over again through the influence of multiple ppl and experiences#i dont want it to start and end all cause of one guy#and with ppl as stubborn as those two it would not surprise me if they reached a stalemate#esp since they seem to have completely incongruent mindsets regarding the nature of lifesteal#identical yet opposites those two#zam may think hes more determined than minute but i dont think thats true i think theyre a lil more even#like not to bring up kings but they both went looking for nether fortresses for hours in the first session#they both kept farming and grinding even when the odds are stacked against them#even when they lose hope they keep going anyway for that tiny sliver of a chance that Something happens#like theres a reason minute looked up to him in s3 and i think its cause he saw a lil bit of himself in zam#or at least what he could be if he set his mind to it#but honestly i dont really care who wins or loses that much#all i ask is that the season ends in an interesting way regardless of if its in peace or chaos#characterwise; plotwise; possibly even metawise#just give me something to chew on and ill be happy

following up an earlier post with some more thoughts on religion and mythology in my pokemon fanfiction.
in hoenn, legend has it humans and pokemon were made out of an uneven mix of earth and water, the same makeup as the planet. when they die they're buried or buried at sea to return that material to its source. cemetaries are often also gardens, and some folks living out in the country may forego a community cemetery to bury their loved one in their garden. it's taboo to disturb a burial place or dig up a garden.
may thinks this is strange because she's johtoni, originally from blackthorn, and according to their traditions bodies are burned to release the soul to ho-oh for safekeeping so they can be reincarnated. burying a body traps the soul outside of ho-oh's domain.
#listen i just think the local legendaries should be regarded as gods because it's fun#may maple#there's no place like hoenn#autumn.fic#fic: eye of the storm#make those corpses do work for you farming ain't easy#tw death#tw implied death#i love thinking about this stuff for fanfic i get way too into it#naturally mt pyre freaks may right the fuck out#''there are HOW MANY bodies here???''

dragon io is, as I've mentioned, just... stupidly, ridiculously territorial and their valley certainly falls under that in its entirety. there have been many, many settlements over the centuries, and each have succumbed to various fates (usually dragon-related). currently, there's two villages that io currently allows to inhabit their valley, but they are always, always watching them with a critical eye. the moment they get too into the idea of growth is when io will rid the valley of both and call it a day. they do the work to make sure both villages properly understand the relationship: so long as they are quiet, make no moves against the dragon living above them, and don't start tearing up the valley for crops or homes, then their local watchful super-predator will (mostly) leave them alone. every movement into and out of the valley is tracked, and the presence of groups of armed people is something that they will not stand - said groups get chased out or straight-up attacked depending on the mood for the day. the presence of other dragons always results in the latter of those two options. the villages are... sometimes liable to get caught in the crossfire, though. an attack on io is nothing short of encouragement to make themself known as dangerous and pissed, and they will burn great swathes of their valley and the villages, too, just to make that point. mostly, though, io really isn't inclined to mess with them much and the two (three) live in relatively tense peace. there's also the fact of the matter that io is lonely, and can pass through both villages in their most human of forms as disguise and fulfill social requirements (be an asshole, buy some fruit, etc.)
#⌜❝ 𝙸𝙸. i’m the world ender & i’m back from the grave. ⟩⟩#𝚂𝙴𝚁𝙿𝙴𝙽𝚂 𝙰𝙱𝙾𝚄𝚃. this little beast was nature’s own error. grew like a tree; born to spread terror. ❞ ⌟#why do people keep coming back u ask#bc io is very old and people are very good at forgetting#or writing it all off as local myth. especially if it's quiet for (x) amount of years#and a valley is always a very good spot to build. farm. etc.#mmm yeah giant white wyrm in the hills. venomous too. uh huh uh huh whatever look how fertile this floodplain is#and why do the villages stay u ask#well. no one is going to come attack u cause the dragon took care of that#and the giant dragon really does mostly leave you alone#and when they aren't happy about something they at least give a warning#hey farmer jim tried to till up new land for a field and it got absolutely destroyed overnight so#i guess we won't do that#i feel that#at this point#both villages have other less destructive/intrusive ways to grow and harvest food#and they're not that big. anyway#trembling and shaking with the effort to not put my 110% into this and think about every little detail

Ive been waiting for ages in oni for my future industrial block to be vacuumed out so I decided to doodle some furry women while I waited (it’s still not done)
#keese draws#oxygen not included#olivia broussard#jackie stern#trying to hold strong and main tag doodles even if I don’t like some of them#anyways I definitely made my industrial brick Way too big for the things I currently plan on using it for#the main reason I made it so big is that I have two minor volcanoes in it that I may or may not unplug at some point to experiment#I’ve never used magma before so I think it’d be a good thing to try to get comfortable doing#even if I doubt it’ll work out in my case since I imagine having the volcano in the sauna itself could cause problems#mainly that I can only fit so many steam turbines so overheating could still be a problem#I’m hoping that it’ll be balanced out by me not currently having too much stuff in there but idk#in the future once I start digging through my second planet I might use that sauna for natural gas generators#I’d have to adjust some stuff but I think that could be a decent use of my time#especially given that currently I’m relying on a hydrogen vent and coal generators for power#which tbf I am on like cycle 200 smth so that should suffice for a while but eventually I’m going to run out of coal#I’ve been ranchinh sage hatches and pips but I just don’t have the space or resources to farm enough of both to keep up with the coal demand#the main problem with the pips is that almost everywhere is just too cold for arbor trees#and I’m currently using my warmer spaces for bristle berries#now I do have a cool steam vent which I could in theory try to use to warm up a large area for pip farms#but that would be tricky to balance well and I think I’d be better off just trying to work towards space travel and getting access to oil#maybe I can go for slicksters in the meantime? I do have a lot of carbon dioxide sitting around#anyways uhhh doomed toxic yuri on the mind happy pride month or smth idk#the real take I need from everyone is if gravitas goes rainbow for pride month of not

i think a very telling point about modern western society is
we have an industry that people pay to spread poison and torture devices around to kill mice and cockroaches and rats and snakes and things and we also have an industry that people pay to breed and sell mice and cockroaches and rats and snakes and things
and you will find both of these businesses in the same town
#i find something about this truth so disturbing#because its lives#and we are squeezing large amounts of lives out of the ether via some pretty creepy practices on one end and shoving lives of the same kind#into the meat grinder on the other end and it just somehow seems like an enormous and too-casual affront to nature#and fuck actually we are low key doing the same thing to cats#just breeding and killing and breeding and killing#its crazy#we don't even eat them or anything#i don't know if feels unholy#yes even the cockroaches#like they are just little forrest janitors#and like sure i hate them in my house too#but its not their fault#and to get into a poisoning war with them while at the same time farming them to be fed alive to other bred and captive animals#the whole thing seems weird to me#but like weird in the way that makes the universe mad at you
