started watching natsume yuujinchou. currently: ep 6

The episodic writing of Natusme Yuujinchou improves so much across the seasons (esp the 6th) and i think the two Shibata episodes are a really good demonstration of this.

Honestly I don’t even have much to say about the first one, I don’t remember it very well. But suffice to say “Shibata is deeply unpleasant to Natsume but Natsume helps him anyways because he’s pathologically nice.” Not the worst episode but definitely not one of my favorites.

But S6 Shibata!!! Still an asshole, but like, an asshole who cares! Hilariously so! take the opening phone call --

What Shibata means: I want to thank you for helping me even though I was cruel to you, and check up on you to see you’re doing alright.

What Shibata actually says: Hey Natsume! You don’t have any friends so you’re free right? Want to hang out tomorrow?

Natsume: I’m busy, actually. Meeting *a friend* in fact.

Shibata: Okay great bring him too!

So then Natsume brings Tanuma along to another town, because, pathologically nice, see above.

And then Shibata’s like: Oh great you actually showed up! And hey you DO have a friend! I thought you were just making up excuses to blow me off.

Tanuma, just vibing: hey

Circles and fixated on Natsume... But that "I won't lose," line... Another exorcist? Maybe someone with a connection to Reiko? Or maybe jealous of the attention Natsume gets from... could be Sasada or Natori.

But the circles have eyes in them... Jealous of Natsume's ability to see, maybe? But then again, there was that reaction to having said his name... Hmm... So many possibilities! I'm so excited!

anyway the movie was good, I enjoyed it. the animation was nice, and I esp loved the way they animated tanuma submerged in the water when he’s possessed, it’s a super cool visual metaphor

If I may make a suggestion in turn, you might like Natsume Yuujinchou! It’s a slice-of-life supernatural anime about a boy who can see yokai, but it has a heavy focus on found family and friends, and it’s heavily implied that the MC is an abuse/neglect survivor. He slowly learns to trust people and love them and is very, very kind. =)

I'm rewatching Natsume Yuujinchou season 1 in anticipation of season 7 coming out, and I'd forgotten what early series Natsume was like!! I'd forgotten how he initially disliked and distrusted the youkai (while still doing his best to help them!). Kind of like how he distrusted the humans around him, after years and years of experiences showing him that neither worlds (human or youkai) would accept him :((

After real life forced me to pause the episode in the middle of it I am now able to continue.

I promise I'm not gonna liveblog the rest but I feel the need to do it for S2E6 because I have been dying to meet Tooru since the beginning of the season.

And also lol my theories were way wrong. I somehow never even thought her behaviour could have been a youkai's fault. For some reason my brain went full stop on the human characters despite the show being literally about youkai shenanigans.

I loved drawing weird magic circle looking sigils everywhere when I was younger too but you can bet I would stop if doing so would strip the veil between my perceived normal and the supernatural.

Also damn, that youkai is really terrifying. The last time an openly antagonistic youkai scared me like this was S1E12. Good on Tooru for still staying active despite it. I would be too terrified to do anything and die without even trying.
