I love this one. 

Number Five: Ayaka Mariko

Yes, she’s all about jokes, but she’s also all about fun. She also knows what it’s like to be sad and depressed, so I feel like she can cover the full spectrum of hugs here, for the excited hug and for the “it’s okay I’m right here” kind of hug.

Shizuku claims she doesn’t like hugs, but she’ll get a little jealous when Ayaka gives them to Seika. 

Number Four: Maria Yuki

She wants to be a mom so I feel like her hugs would be superb. The kids she looks after/babysits/whatever love her. I bet that she’s also good at taking in feedback-- you don’t want a hug? Maybe you get a high five instead.

Number Three: Natsuki Utsuho

Natsuki gives great, good quality hugs, especially when she is overwhelmed with excitement. But I see her being a lot like Maria, where she’ll understand that not everyone wants a hug out there. She probably has an internal catalogue of those who like hugs and those who want fistbumps, those who want polite acknowledgements, ect. She’s enthusiastic about every method, so you never feel like you’re missing out or that she’s singling you out. She’s just pumped to be excited with you.

Akira secretly loves Natsuki’s hugs the most.

Number Two: Ikumi Makino

I see her a lot like Ayaka, but even more extreme. She probably has a lot of experience giving out hugs due to the maid cafe thing, and I think she doesn’t judge those who’d need one. Yes, her bubbly personality is a bit fake, but that doesn’t stop her from knowing the value of a good hug.

Ikumi has probably hugged Mifuyu a couple of times.

Number One: Iroha Tamaki

I mean, c’mon, look at her. She’s the archetype of a big sister. Of course she gives good hugs. If Iroha doesn’t give three hugs per day to each member of the Mikazuki Villa individually then something has gone very wrong.

I’m going to drop Atsuhiro and Adrianna’s family tree and the relevant explanations of who’s who under the cut.

We’ll be going off of how everyone is related to Atsuhiro, as I placed him in the center.

Maternal side

1st generation: Oji Harima, the Peerless Thief, married Koharu.

2nd generation: They had two sons together, Takuto and Shōhei.

3rd generation:

Takuto married Atsuko and they had one daughter, Akiko.

Shōhei married Eiko and they had three daughters together: Kaori, Mariko, and Natsuki.

4th generation:

Akiko married Florián and they had one son, Atsuhiro.

Kaori married Shigeo and they had one son, Riku. And one daughter, Aimi.

Mariko married Yoshirō and they had one daughter, Airi. And two sons, Tadashi and Kei.

Natsuki married Haruka and they had two daughters, Izumi and Michi. And two sons, Takuya and Jun.

Overview

On his mother's side of the family, Atsuhiro has: His mother, grandparents, 9 second cousins, 6 first cousins once removed, and a great-uncle and great-aunt.

On his father's side of the family, Atsuhiro has: His father, 2 aunts, 2 uncles via those aunts, 5 first cousins, and 2 second cousins. Adrianna is the youngest out of these 5 first cousins.

There are certainly more due to marriages, births, and at times less due to deaths in the family or divorce. But I have to stop somewhere! The only people I can say right off the bat are no longer living are Atsuhiro’s great-great grandparents Oji and Koharu. As well as his father and Adrianna’s uncle, Florián.

My Transformation Rankings (PART 1)

Hello, it is time. I will now be ranking all magical girl transformations. Firstly, I will not be rating the ones featuring characters specifically made for the main story, or are a part of the original anime, or are an anime property like Monogatari. Of course they have the best transformations lol. A transformation here is defined as “going from one outfit/state-of-dress to another”. In addition, I will sort transformation videos into categories:

Category 1: There is no actual outfit transformation. They’re in their outfit at the beginning of the video, or don’t appear in two different states of dress. 

Category 2: There is no actual outfit transformation, BUT they summon their weapon. 

Category 3: There’s an actual outfit transformation! However they don’t summon their weapon (they already have it on them in most situations, Melissa does not have it at all)

My favourites for each category: I will be grading these based on how they use what they are given. If they have weapons, how do their weapons add to the scene? What does it tell us about the magical girl? For instance, category 1, instead of transforming, what makes it interesting to watch, how do the girls appear? 

For Category 1: Riz Hawkwood – music is cool and reminds me of a witch burning at the stake, relevant to Tart’s story. I like how she emerges from the shadows and her animation is pretty stylized in terms of shading and shine. Suzune Amano – the fire is cool and has a similar style to Riz’s, she’s swinging her sword and moving. Ashley Taylor and Ayaka Mariko – both of them emerge from smoke. Ayaka’s is relevant to her theme of performance, and I like how she transitions into the last frame by turning the thing into her hammer. Fun and upbeat energy. Ashley and her bear both mimic each other and it’s ADORABLE. 

For Category 2:  Megumi Moka – It tells us a lot about her: she likes sweets, is clumsy but a good sport about it (considering her axe almost cut her foot off), and is honestly a sweet-heart *ba-dum-chiss*. The videos are supposed to be an introduction to their character and I’m already in love with this cutie pie. Kirika Kure - the animators embraced the crazy and I will forever love them for it. Kokoro Awane - fluid animation, moves with her weapon in a dynamic way. 

For Category 3: Melissa de Vignolles - This introduces us to her backstory as a maid, and how she was raised to act well-mannered. Everything is perfected by her little curtsey at the end, she’s just adorable! Rika Ayano - First we see her reflection, then it cuts to her. I enjoy how her compact mirror is used to transform her, similar to one of Sailor Moon’s or Pretty Cure’s transformation items. Kurumi Manaka - I appreciate that the fire from her frying pan acts as a transition into her outfit, a few frames dedicated to highlighting her chef’s hat. Toki Sunao - This is one of the more detailed transformations in this category, and I enjoy how the glass ball remains as a constant, slowly moving her arms up at the end. The music fits well, and it’s one of the better animations overall, personal top 3. 

For Category 4: Karin Misono - music gives you a sense of that halloween feel they’re definitely going for, and the transformation sequence is timed to it. It’s satisfying to watch the hat fall on her head and how she cheekily sticks out her tongue as the music dings. I love how they add on her outfit items as the camera zooms out farther. Emiri Kisaki - Very well timed to the music. Mizuki Rui - She starts off confused “What’s happening?, transitions to “Okay! I guess we’re doing this”, to “Yeah! We’re doing this!”. The emotion tells us a story, and I love it! As well as being timed to the music, the items appear as she twirls her weapon, wrapping the whole thing up in a neat bow and gives us a satisfactory conclusion. Sayuki Fumino - Her transformation reminds me of a mix between something I’d see in Mermaid Melodies and Sailor Moon with the whole singing and catching the twirling microphone in her hand as she glides through the air, magic wrapping around her whole body. It’s very well done, even if her end pose is a little suspect, she still looks adorable. Izumi Kanagi - the PRESENCE this one has. She is a fighting commander and you WILL follow her orders. Less emphasis is put on her face, as we see the cape flapping behind her as she braves the harsh wind. As she struggles to summon her eye glass, we get a sense that she cares less about herself and more so the cause she fights for and the burdens she carries. If this technically bends the rules, I DON’T CARE.

My Least Favourite Magical Girl Designs: Magia Record

Now this one was a little easier for me. No set number because there are way less designs I dislike than I like. Here, I’ve listed which designs I’m not fond of, and what I’d do to improve them! Please note, this has no bearing at all on how I feel about the characters themselves! Like the previous list, this doesn’t include girls from either the original show (Let’s be honest, all those designs are god-tier anyway), or other spinoffs.

Leila Ibuki:

For the most part, I have no problem with this design. Until you get to the very big problem; WHERE ARE HER PANTS? Seriously, I love the top, love the poofy chaps things, the shield/sword combo are unique and cute, but dear gosh, child please. Whoever designed her, she is baby. Treat her as such. To fix her design, I’d extend the bottoms downward to make pants under the chaps things and upward so that the pants aren’t RIDING THE LINE OF HER CROTCH, also, I’d make her soul gem a little bit more evident. I legit had no clue where it was until the wiki pointed it out to me.

Himika Mao:

This is a mess. Big, huge mess. It’s bright, it’s different, and I’d normally excuse the messiness, as she looks like a video game heroine or maybe something out of a circus, but just like Leila. *inhale* PANTS. For this design, I’d do a couple things. First and foremost, turn the chaps into pants. Second, I’d change the parts of the bikini bottom sticking out from under the belt into suspenders attached to the bottom of her shirt. And lastly, I’d move her soul gem from her belt to her navel. Maybe, MAYBE I’d turn her long plait into a plaited loop, but I do like the long plait.

Natsuki Utsuho:

Oh boy. Oh gosh. Just... look at everything going on here. It’s so much. Which... isn’t to say I don’t like it though. But if I were allowed to go in and change her design up, I would say... get rid of the green choker/bow on the choker. It’s honestly distracting and looks out of place. I’d also make her chest smaller because being a cheerleader, the poor thing has got to be suffering with all that moving and jumping around- and if I weren’t allowed to do that, I would make sure her chest actually had proper support. Oh, and I’d also change the cut look of her hair outside of her ponytail, you know, make it more obvious that it’s tied back and she doesn’t just have one awkward long set of locks.

Kako Natsume:

I adore my baby Kako. I love her gameplay, I love her character, I love how her soul gem looks like an open book. Very, very nice. But in my opinion, her dress and cloak have too many scattered details. I would make it simpler, keep just a couple of the gold and white accents. But outside of that, she’s good.

Kokoro Awane:

I... mm. I just- I’m not sure where to start here. Or even what to do to improve this one without an entire redesign. On almost every magical girl, I can see what the designer was going for. A motif, or a style, or SOMETHING. But Kokoro, bless her... I can’t pick up anything like that. My VERY first impression of her was that she might be a nurse. Probably because of the little hat and the Nurse Joy esque hair (yes, I love Pokemon). But then I found out that that wasn’t even remotely close to anything about her, aside from maybe her kindness...?? Yeah, I’d personally just re-do her entire magical girl outfit.

Ayaka Mariko:

Ayaka’s top incenses me. It covers NOTHING when push comes to shove. Suppose a witch blasts a strong gust of wind at her from the wrong angle?! I won’t stand for that. First order of business, the top shouldn’t split until JUST BARELY above her bellybutton. Second order of business, shrink the massive bowtie ever so slightly. I know she wants to be a comedian, but that doesn’t mean she can’t be classy while being showy. Aside from that, no real qualms, moving on.

Shizuku Hozumi:

My only REAL beef with Shizuku’s design is the corset top. I’d bring it up higher to cover the way-too-obvious cleavage and the bottom edge down a little lower to reduce midriff, maybe make the shorts a tad longer. Also change her 4 star card art to be more tasteful and non fanservicy, but we’re not talking about card art here.

Asuka Tatsuki:

I only have one, minor gripe here. My poor big chested child has no support. She’s got to be in pain or at least serious discomfort. Either reduce her chest size, or give her something to keep them from giving her as much grief as they no doubt do.
