XC KLR Trip
Day 14, time to move on. Leasurly break camp. Pancakes, leftover chicken, banana, for brkfst. Stopped by library in Mayfield, CO, to figure out Tumblr postings. Posted up to date.
Day 15, 4th of July. Spent the day riding around Mesa Verde. Observed the Cliff Dwellings of the Pueblos. Lot's of startin and stoppin to see all here. Beautiful, but water would be a challenge. All around 8000' elevation. Ate at a park concession, Taco Salad & Lemonade. KLR keeps on keepin on. Investigating what tire choices I have. Considering a street oriented tread. Current tires will be shot when I get to Nevada City, CA. About 4500 miles and shot. Currently at 2865 miles since leaving home. Dinner is leftover Mexican Burritos, chocolate pudding. Oh, and I was very bad today. Rode all day with short pants and shirt, sandals, and my helmet. My Independence Day celebration. Other than the helmet, very Vietnamese. Reminded me how I rode minibikes when I was 10. My parents didn't provide any Safety protection. Minibke had Scrub brakes, just a flat piece of metal that rubbed against the rear tire, and a dragged foot or 2. My parents would have found it cheaper to buy me something with good brakes, versus all the worn out "But we just bought those!" shoes. Anyhow, I survived today just fine. Weather is still perfect, if a little warm. Sorry no pics. Look up Mesa Verde if you want yo see it, or come visit. Worthwhile.
Day 13, pancakes and coffee for brkfst. Worked the leather on my Left boot, too narrow toe, creating a hammer toe on my fat foot. Used some butter and tenderized the leather by beating with theze nice smooth river rocks. REALLY made a difference. Stealthed out my camp, and left for Gunnison, about 150 miles north. Went for a sip from my hydration bag and pulled the bite valve off in my mouth... got a dousing of water in my helmet. Another perfect weather day. 70's on top of the mountains. Up 11,800' over a pass today. Rt 147 up and back. Visited a legal weed shop, interesting. On way back my clutch cable broke as I was coming into Meede. I happen to have spare cables with me, so was back running less than 30 minutes. Finally using the Scott Oiler on my chain...and it's working! Had issues previously with too much, too quick, oil dispensing making a costly mess. Progress. Smoke from the fire burning about 80 miles away is making it's way into the valleys, just a bit hazy this afternoon.Gas ststion was out of all but Premium, $3.59 gallon, needed. Trying new bug spray Natrapel 20% Picaridin spray. Works real well. Smells like a French Whore probably would, really perfurmy....Didn't feel like cooking, had leftover chicken, peanut butter and honey on a hot dog bun and a few cherries. Off to bed.

Cairn Review - May 2017
Hello Everyone!
I’m onto my next subscription box review! I was looking for some outdoor gear the other day, and thanks to Facebook’s advertisement algorithm, a subscription box called Cairn popped up in my news feed in the form of an ad. I thought it looked awesome so I decided to give it a shot!
Their website was SUPER simple to use. I was also very impressed because they let me pick what outdoor activities I like to do along with whether or not I wanted a possible snack (which of course I said YES to!). With my order in, I anxiously awaited my package. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the box itself fit into my mailbox so my nice mail lady didn’t have to drive down my super long gravel road. Setting aside my other mail, I tore into this box.
Now, as a little bit of a disclaimer here, I didn’t do much research about this box before I ordered it. I literally saw it was a box for outdoorsy people and I jumped all over it. My current repertoire of hiking items include only the absolute essentials which is why I was excited about Cairn - I wanted to adventure into other items beyond the essentials that I consider luxuries in the hiking world. The first thing on the top of my box was a nice little newspaper from Cairn, which I set aside to dig through my other goodies first; then I realized I should probably actually look through it so I understood just what was in my box. It has some testimonials, information about their other subscription package, coupons, and information on each product in the box.
Next, I went straight for the food (who wouldn’t?). As some of you know, I’m an unbelievably picky eater, and I will let you know that I’m not a big fan of Clif bars (it’s the whey protein - it has a really strong taste in my opinion). So, I was more than happy to donate this bar to a friend of mine that I knew would like it, and she said it was DELICIOUS. Props to Cairn for helping me keep my friends happy (and healthy) 🤣🤣!
I was pretty excited about the next item in the box - Natrapel wipes. These are mosquito repellent wipes, and they are individually packaged - which I can’t say enough about because it makes them SO EASY to carry around. I personally use them while hiking; I tend to cross waist deep rivers on foot, which means when I get to the other side that my bug spray has gotten washed away. I carry a small towel with me for these excursions and wipe off my legs to dry them. Then, I can use these handy, light weight wipes instead of carrying around an annoying can of bug spray which can add more weight to my pack than I really want (believe me, if you’ve got enough stuff in your pack, a seemingly small can of spray can add A LOT). I will definitely burn through these pretty quickly because mosquitoes see me as an all you can eat buffet. Great job Cairn, this item is AMAZING.
Next, this adorable little sticker popped out of the box. This will definitely adorn the outside of my laptop, and maybe I can help spread the word about Cairn at all my upcoming meetings!
Finally, let’s get to the good stuff. Like I said earlier, I’ve got only the bare essentials for hiking, so when I pulled out these next two items, I was a little confused. That’s my own fault, though. I was SO excited about getting this package that I didn’t stop to read the strategically placed Cairn newspaper first. Silly me. And by strategically placed, I mean that this newspaper was literally ON TOP of everything in the package.
Anyways, I pulled out some straps, and was like well, cool. I’m sure I can use these for something. Then I got out the next item, and finally read that little newspaper - and I was FLOORED. Because this little item went from this...
To THIS (yep, that’s me in there)!
I’ve ALWAYS wanted one of these portable hammocks to take with me on the trail. I could not believe that for just $29.95 (what I paid for this box) I got ALL this stuff PLUS a hammock! AAHHH! I’m still giddy over it!
Okay, I promise I’m moving on from the hammock (not really, but that’s okay). The last thing in my box that I want to mention - that may not seem like a big deal - is the paper wrapped around my items. This stuff is used as packing material along with photo material for great box photos. On this paper was a small quote, which I loved and have cut out to add to my inspirational quotes board (again, I fully acknowledge and accept that I’m a nerd).
Overall? I LOVED THIS BOX. (Side note: look towards the bottom right corner of this last photo, and you will notice my cat’s paw. He jumped in there, grabbed my tree hugger straps for the hammock and started running around the room dragging the bag. I definitely got in my exercise for the day chasing him around. On the bright side: this box is cat tested and approved to be cat durable, in case you ever needed to know that).
It was awesome! I loved the paper packing material, and the hammock alone in this box was worth it. I also love the sticker and the mosquito repellent wipes. My advice for Cairn is maybe to change the layout of the newspaper they include in the box for impatient people such as myself. If I had seen photos of items in the box listed on that top half of the paper shown in my photos (this is how the paper was lying in the box folded), I would’ve stopped to read it first.
Other than that, keep on keepin’ on Cairn! I look forward to your next box. In the meantime, you can find me chilling in my hammock over Memorial Weekend.

Everything we now know about the Zika virus and preventing it
The news comes as even more cases of the mosquito-borne infection have been confirmed in the United States, with every one of those instances being validated in people who have lately traveled to the influenced areas - or had sex with somebody contaminated with the virus.
An episode of the infection in Brazil has actually been condemned for birth defects in countless children birthed within the past year - 404 of those validated situations of microcephaly (the abnormality connected to Zika) in newborns have been because November 2015. Fifteen babies have actually died from microcephaly considering that then, with five linked to Zika as well as an additional 56 under examination. Brazilian authorities are investigating a minimum of 3,670 situations. There were only 147 situations of Zika reported in all of 2014.
Zika has actually additionally prompted officials in Brazil and also Central America to encourage women versus obtaining pregnant.
The first instance of Zika in the USA was verified in January on the Hawaiian island of Oahu.
' The mommy likely had Zika infection when she was residing in Brazil in Could 2015 and also her newborn got the infection in the womb,' a rep for Hawaii's health and wellness department stated, according to CNN. 'Neither the child neither the mommy are infectious, as well as there was never a threat of transmission in Hawaii.'
However, there is some worry that there's the potential for infected individuals to spread the virus through mosquitoes in the USA. Since June 30, 2016, there have mored than 900 validated instances of Zika in the United States, 324 of those in New york city alone, according to the state's health and wellness division. Of those 324, 233 remained in New york city City, numerous of those in individuals who lately took a trip from the Dominican Republic.
The Centers for Illness Control and Avoidance additionally confirmed that since June 23, seven babies have actually been born with abnormality as an outcome of the mosquito-borne condition, alone with 5 shed maternities.
So exactly what is the Zika virus?
The Zika virus is spread out by mosquitoes and is understood to create birth flaws in newborns, consisting of microcephaly, a congenital brain condition that triggers underdevelopment of the mind or head, or both. It can likewise trigger infants to be birthed with smaller-than-normal heads or Down syndrome. Some have difficulty receiving adequate oxygen in the mind and, as shown in Brazil, it could be fatal.
Zika spread via the bites of the Aedes aegypti insect, an usual insect found in subtropical environments recognized for spreading out all type of spitefulness, including the dengue and yellow fevers and also the Chikungunya infection. Zika is a somewhat common infection that commonly brings on small symptoms.
' We understand that four out of five individuals with Zika will certainly have no signs,' Frieden told CNN. 'So our brand-new support says pregnant females without signs and symptoms could be provided screening in between two to 12 weeks after traveling.'
Will there be a huge Zika episode in the United States?
The CDC is still cautious to prevent claiming that Zika will certainly be a substantial trouble in the USA. The wellness body is suggesting that expecting females postpone all travel to the adhering to regions: Bolivia, Brazil, Cape Verde, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Martinique, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Saint Martin, Suriname, Samoa, Venezuela and Puerto Rico. If you have actually been to these areas as well as were expecting at the time, you need to seek screening for the virus.
If traveling is inevitable, the CDC advises taking lots of preventative measures to keep insects away.
The Brazilian federal government just recently verified they identified active Zika infection in saliva as well as pee, leading numerous to believe it could conveniently be transmitted through those mediums. Nonetheless, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the supervisor of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told NPR in a meeting that traces of the infection in saliva and also urine does not necessarily mean it can be transferred that way. 'There's undoubtedly a theoretical possibility, yet there's no evidence that it's taken place or that it will happen,' he said.
So, your main worry ought to still be with mosquitos and sexual transmission.
As for the USA, the Aedes aegypti mosquitoes are already discovered in lots of components of the mainland, yet as of now you're most likely to obtain various other health problems from the attacks. Still, there is no vaccination - and one isn't really coming up anytime soon - so the CDC is suggesting that men stay clear of sex with expectant ladies that have been anywhere around the affected areas.
The British Fertility Society likewise advises that individuals who have traveled to Zika-affected areas ought to not try to develop, give away eggs or sperm, or have fertility treatments for 28 days post-exposure.
And everyone ought to be using effective repellents - particularly those in states with validated situations. Consumer Reports discovered that the most reliable repellents are ones which contain high percentages of picardin or Deet. The most effective scoring repellent was Repel Lemon Eucalyptus, but others by Repel, Sawyer, Off! Deep Woods and also Natrapel racked up high as well.

Natrapel comes in an environmental friendly bottle and I can spray it directly on our clothes without damaging the material.
