Nat always fills the room. It's a tough gig - being in the business of sad songs - but every time I see Nat play I catch the audience beaming in between tunes as he trails off about his love of birds or life as a camp counselor. He seems to thrive off of that kind of shift in the room and wields that foil expertly: one minute he'll be rattling off facts to a giggling audience about albatross with 10-foot wingspans, and the next minute everyone will be holding their breath in sync as he lobs lyrics soaked with regret and loss, only to dissipate that tension again with another camp-life story.

I asked Nat to play a song at a park nearby that had some thick woods so that he could feel a bit at home. I wanted to give him some more space, a little more room to fill with the birds singing harmony.
