Brodie, Kenzo, and Sylvester welcome you to 2024

They're a bit of a ragtag crew at the moment. Kenzo is both thrilled and intimidated not to be the only adult male in the community.
I'd been thinking about Kid Kore men for several months, mostly on the subject of "no." The reason for "no" was that I was intending to rebody Kenzo... only finding a body that's skinny and pale enough turns out to be a challenge.
By December 26, Sylvester, who is the blond gladiator 1280 from Legends of Ancient Lands, had been on eBay for weeks with a 99-cent starting big and no takers. The end of the year is the logical time for sellers to move failed listings to the "donate" bin, and if he's donated it, he'll be somewhere far, far from here. So I bought him for 99 cents.
At the same time, Brodie, who is Chief White Eagle. was given a substantial markdown that would take him below $20 with shipping. He's in good shape and I kind of love his jersey, so I bought him too.
Skinny Ken looks very, very skinny between these boys. (Nude dolls after the jump.)

If Skinny Ken weren't canonically an adult in my community, I'd be reconsidering his relationship with puberty. But we're diverse! He's a skinny grown-up. Brodie is a solidly built dude, while Sylvester is all about the pelvis.
Brodie and Sylvester are not on the same body: Brodie is 1994 and Sylvester is 1995.
The difference becomes more apparent from the rear.

Both Kid Kore guys have more body mobility than Skinny Ken, thanks to twist-and-turn waists. Brodie has click knees that give me one click. Sylvester does not.
The Kid Kores definitely have different head molds.

When I was washing Sylvester, I noticed that the tan on his face was coming off. Only the tan, not the face-up! I don't want to scrub it all off, as then he won't match his body, so it is what it is. (He's a 27-year-old doll I got for 99 cents before shipping, so hey). He now officially has vitiligo,
Brodie got his hair rebraided because his rooting doesn't support any other hair style.
Unusually, the guys are back in the clothing they arrived in because nothing in my Ken stash fits them! I thought Broad Ken clothes might work on Brodie, but his feet won't go through the legs of the pants. So I will be sewing pants for them once I've done dresses for the Katie Krew.
Sylvester's role in the community is undetermined as yet. Brodie is the big brother of Brooke and uncle of Bette Mae.

jey 🪻🪐✨💜 read for some lore below! @hot-purple-guys
Some notes about him:
• Jey’s full name is Jeyson Adahy Winter Atsadi ❄️ • He is Native American (Cherokee- Blue Clan), Irish, Norwegian, Indian,Colombian, and Scottish.
• jey is likes to do lots of things! Jey is creative and does things like alchemy (medicine) , sewing, painting, and advocating for others.
• jey also has autism : for example, he does fidget but does so with little feather bracelets on his hands he made with beads. He often does need quiet times so he does that by sitting alone in a forest with trees and listening to nature. Jey isn’t fond of certain textures, like popsicle sticks. They weird him out. Since Jey is famous in my book he is known to have a script ready in his head for whenever a fan surprises him. Jey also loves being cuddled and hugs with his wife Val so spending time together is a must. They spend a lot of time holding hands, taking their children on nature walks, or when they’re alone, watching old movies and snuggling. Jey is also known to be quiet and afraid to approach/talk to new people. He only opens up to people he’s close to. Jey is extremely creative and very friendly.
• jey is a big family man! well, he is 7’6, but he is just a big teddy bear and is always there for his kids when they need help with schoolwork or anything in general. His wife is his bestie and him and Val (Jey’s wife) are practically inseparable because they love each other so much.
• jey is a purple moon moth shickzel, which means that his insecurities (his freckles) turn into stars once he’s in his purest starry form. Shickzels have variant forms and can be kinda like blobs or humanoid or moths. They represent change, as to accept yourself you must change the way you see yourself to love what makes you, YOU. and that makes you magical. ✨🪐

Minuk from Girls of Many Lands was a lucky Facebook find. She’s in excellent condition and the price was far lower than I’ve seen on eBay.
Of all the GOML books, Minuk’s is my favorite. I’m excited to have an Alaska Native doll in my collection.

i’ve really been hoping that g3 Venus would be Indigenous bc venus flytraps the actual plant are exclusively indigenous to coastal areas in north & south carolina usa so it would make sense & be cool to see venus be part of an Indigenous nation in the same area. it’s looking like in this gen she’s going to be black/black coded but afroindigenous ppl exist so maybe i’m still holding out hope lmao
#if anyone says that they must b scottish/irish bc of their surname y’all know that’s bullshit 😐#a lot of native americans have european surnames due to colonization so they can have an ‘mc’ name & still b native#also venus flytraps are simultaneously male & female meaning venus could very much be an intersex & nonbinary character#which if they were indigenous would make them two-spirit which is such an underrepresented identity & would be a HUGE win for diversity#idk i respect their decisions but to me it feels pretty obvious w a quick google search on the plant to realize that they should b native#like it just makes the most sense? so ig i’m gonna feel p disappointed if venus isn’t indigenous in g3#ig it doesn’t rlly matter#also they turn black in their dormant period so they should become goth in the winter😭😭#i like venus’ leaked design so far but i know damn well she will b impossible to get😭😭#monster high#mh#monster high dolls#monster high gen 1#monster high gen 3#venus mcflytrap

Thus far I have created polls to break down all the dolls in the Dolls of the World line that represent the same country or cultural group with, as far as I can tell (and it is very possible I've missed one), two exceptions.
These two exceptions being Native American and Pacific Islander.
If I can break down the trouble I am having with these two.
To my knowledge, there are 5 different dolls in the Dolls of the World line named "Native American Barbie", one named "Northwest Coast Native American Barbie" and one named "Princess of the Navajo". The majority of these dolls do not provide any further context on the doll packaging to indicate if they are specifically referring to a particular culture under the Native American umbrella. Their costumes may indicate specific tribes, but if so, I am not informed enough to know.

Pictured above are 1993 and 1994, both presented as Native American but with nothing more specific listed.

1995, whose box text indicates she is from the Southern Plains.

1996 and 1998 which are again unspecified - 1998 mentions Navajo and Hupa on her box text, but uses these as examples of Native American tribes without claiming identification with either.

And then Northwest Coast Native American Barbie and Princess of the Navajo.
I do not know enough about Native American culture to know whether it would be appropriate to combine these into one group and create a poll asking to pick which one is the best, but it does not feel respectful. It also does not feel appropriate to exclude them from the bracket. So I am at an impasse.
(Pacific Islander Barbies discussed in a separate post.)

This classic Dolls of the World Barbie Doll was in desperate need of a makeover!
Her original skirt was a travesty. And I just so happened to come across this beautiful yellow Native inspired fabric (found at Goodwill, as is my way), so naturally here we are.
See more of her here! -> https://www.etsy.com/listing/1516850474/ooak-rescue-doll-1993-dolls-of-the-world

It struck me this morning that since acquiring Brodie, I had also acquired other male dolls and other male doll clothes, so he might have pants options other than wearing the dreadful buckskins or waiting for me to sew something.
To wit, he might be able to fit into Rock the Bell's Anthony's sweatpants.

He does! Anthony's clothing is a great fit. Brodie is Anthony's biggest fan!
Brodie's hair is down because I decided to see if his rooting supported any hairstyle other than braids. So he's had a good boilwashing and now has straight loose hair. The rooting is iffy, but I want to ponder contemporary men's long hair styles before styling it.
If he fits Anthony's sweatpants, does he fit into those khakis that are stretched out by Elspeth's pulling them over her baby bump?
Short answer: no. They can't go over his feet, because he doesn't have ankle articulation. The good news, though, is that if I sew pants that aren't narrow-legged, Brodie and Anthony can share, giving them both more options!
Brodie can wear the black body suit, giving him a nice casual athleisure look. He and Marisol (Hobbit Teresa) have university classes together and are both huge fans of Anthony, which may or many not be enough to build a dating relationship on.

That's progress on eliminating the element of "treating a living culture like it's all historical" that pervades doll depictions of Native Americans. He's also now coming par with the other guys in having a personality that's unique to him, not just a role based on cultural identity. He's specifically Tohono O'odham (his mother [and several prior generations of family] were sent to the Phoenix Indian School and he wrote a lot of poems about this in high school, since Central High is right by the old site), but I still need to do some research on how that affects naming, as colonialism has a huge impact there.
Brodie is studying toward a career in architecture. He helps fund college by working as a night manager at Desert Diamond, where he secretly cherishes hopes of getting caught up in an adventure like The Night Manager TV series.
17: He's so unusual

These burly guys are both Kid Kore. They qualify for the @look-back-month-challenge prompt about unusual toys because they were attempts to exploit popular movies that weren't literal knock-offs of the movie characters.
Sylvester (my name for him), the burly chap on the left, is a gladiator from the Legends of Ancients Land series, which encompassed a sort of Greece-Rome-Egypt vibe, plus I've seen a "China" doll. His 1996 date points to his being meant to appeal to viewers of the Disney movie Hercules. (His vitiligo is an accident.) Legends of Ancient Lands did not develop entire family structures, so while there are women, I've seen maybe one Timmy (the Tommy clone) and no Katies.
Brodie (also my name for him) is the father figure from the Heartland series that was mostly Native Americans, capitalizing on the Pocahontas boom. (His assigned name, Chief White Eagle, is racist on a couple levels.) This line got the full family treatment, which I will talk about some other time.
My ambitious plans included sewing modern long pants for both of these guys, but this week has been about a month's worth of stress. I've had the fabric for a year. *sigh*

Passion
This was drawn before I got sick. I had wanted to upload this before I became bedridden.
This drawing is a tribute to the Music Video of Utada Hikaru's song, Passion.
The creatures you see in this pic, according to the information in the production notes are Kachinas.
Kachinas are spirit beings found in the culture of the Zuni, the Hopi and other Pueblo Native American Cultures in Arizona and New Mexico. They are personifications of nature and other objects.
I felt like drawing a pic of them. Here they are.

Barbies of the BPCL: Northwest Coast Native American Barbie

This Barbie is part of the Dolls of the World collection from 2000. The description from the Barbie collection reads:
Yake'i ixw sateeni! (It is good to see you!) I'm Northwest Coast Native American Barbie doll from Alaska, land of the last frontier. My people live in the Northwest Coast and panhandle area of Southeast Alaska. It is called the panhandle area because it looks like the handle of a frying pan. I am wearing our beautiful ceremonial dress with a Chilkat Robe, traditionally woven from cedar bark and mountain goat hair. Now, I'm ready for the Winter Ceremonials, where we sing and dance, feeling close to the spirits of nature, as our ancestors did. Please come to visit Alaska soon! Tsu yei ixwa sateeni! (I'll see you again!)
Check out our other Barbies at #bpcl barbies.

THE TWO BARBIES I WANT ARE $12.50 ‼️🗣️‼️🗣️‼️🗣️
I need to buy food tho...
SO I'M USING MY CREDIT CARD 🗣️💳‼️‼️‼️
I only got the pink star Barbie because I am using my credit card so I don't want to owe too much
but omggg this is the one I have been wanting the most!!! I really like her because she looks like a member of my dad's side of the family meanwhile Cheyenne looks like my mom's side of the family :)

I have never seen a Barbie doll that looks so similar to my family, so this is very special to me
the closest Barbie doll I had as a child that looked like an indigenous Latin American person was Teresa 😭 which like, no shade to her but she just doesn't look... like my family does LOL
I really appreciate these newer Barbie dolls ✨ I will name her Xupankatatwi. it is Nawat for "winter in the early morning" :)
