WATT, ALISON (Escocia, 1965)

 Esta artista se dedica a la pintura, especialmente de retratos. Fue precisamente con un retrato con el que gano un premio del National Portrait Gallery y ganó el reconocimiento que dispararía su carrera.  Más adelante, empezó a utilizar telas junto a estas obras, uniendo así un nuevo material a sus figuras y representaciones. Enel  2000, en la galería de Arte contemporáneo de Escocia, presentó su serie Shifts, con todas las obras siendo telas o representaciones de estas. Su obra está en varias exposiciones permanentes alrededor de Escocia y Gran Bretaña, así como una en el museo de Florencia Uffizy Gallery.

What are your thoughts on the Obama portraits? @jenniferrabin reminds us to look deeper... ・・・ #Repost Regardless of personal opinions about the official portraits of the Obamas, I wish more focus was being given to the conceptual decisions that the artists (@kehindewiley painted President Obama; @asherald painted Mrs. Obama) made in creating these works. I wish more of the news coverage mentioned the flowers in the background of Mr. Obama’s portrait, each a representation of parts of his past (Kenya, Hawaii, Illinois), and how the backdrop of that past is trying to overtake the subject himself. I wish that instead of writing about the interesting and pretty dress in which Sherald chose to feature Mrs. Obama, reporters had taken the time to research the tradition of African American quiltmaking that Sherald was referencing with the garment. Cezanne’s portraits are very interesting at the National Portrait Gallery. I liked the fact that he just painted people, never took any commission from people who wanted a “meaningful and expressing inner world” portraits.
