Water colour painting of Singapore River back in the day by Lim Cheng Hoe, National Gallery, Singapore 🇸🇬

Lately, I have been visiting museums in Singapore. This exhibition of paintings by Lim Cheng Hoe, leading water colour artist of his time (from the 30s to 70s) in Singapore, was free and a little delight on a mundane Monday.

Actually I didn’t even know who he was before this. It’s unfortunate how we are blasé towards local artists and often overlook them. Lim loved nature and placed a great importance on painting outdoors (also known as plein-air painting) much like the Impressionists. It’s based on “the belief that an artist must experience nature directly to best convey the effects of light and atmosphere in a painting.” As he could not afford to go to art school, Lim juggled both a full time job as a clerk and his aspiration to improve his painting skills. He would meet his artist friends every Sunday and sit in the sun for hours painting scenes of Kampong life and Singapore river.

I admire people of industry, courage, strength and integrity. Of late, I’ve come to realise these verities of life have become dispensable and inexorably, we are tumbling down a path of objectification and taking for granted the simple things that have made humans gratified for centuries.

השנה 1988-1989. אני בגן חובה. שנתיים לפני מלחמת המפרץ, ילדון חתיך ואהוב בבית, בחברים ובגן. מלא שמחת חיים ושופע אור. אחת המתנות הכי יפות שקבלתי באותה שנה היתה התחפושת הזו: סבתי שאלה אותי ואת אחי: "אני משיגה לכם את התופרת הכי טובה בעיר, מכירה אותי שנים, רק תגידו איזו תחפושת אתם רוצים ויהיה לכם". אני-בלי להסס להתבלבל ולמצמץ פעמיים אמרתי ישר: "אני רוצה להתחפש למלך". אני זוכר את אותם שבועיים שהתכוננו לפורים. היתה הרגשה חגיגית באוויר, שמחה פנימית שזה הולך ומתקרב. אני אהיה מלך. עמיחי בן החמש וחצי, שזה עתה היגר להרצליה מהוד השרון לשנה נוספת בגן חובה, הולך למלוך ליום אחד. באותו יום כל כך התרגשתי. הכנתי את עצמי לתופרת ועמדתי בלי לזוז. היא מודדת ומודדת..ומודדת..וממשיכה למדוד. כבר אז היתה לי סבלנות של פיל והמתנתי בשקט, כפי שידעתי לעשות הכי טוב. התחלנו את המלאכה שבועיים קודם לכן, כדי שלתופרת יהיה מספיק זמן להכין את התחפושות לי ולאחי. והנה הגיע היום המרגש. למזכרת יפה, יוסי בן משה צילם את המאורע המרגש. אימי היתה על מלאכת "ציירי לך שפם"-אחת הפעמים המעטות שהרעיון שלהּ לגימורים צלח לחלוטין בנוגע לתחפושת ואני...אני נעמדתי על הכיסא ופשוט, פשוט הייתי אני. והרי לפניכםן התוצאה: צוּר המלך בן החמש וחצי מחופש ליום אחד. החלטתי לצייר את התמונה הזו לאוסף הנכבד של הרישומים הקודמין, שיכנסו לפרויקט האלבום הדיגיטלי שלי. אני רוצה לשלב אותו יחד עם הסיפור הנפלא הזה. סיפור שמלווה אותי שנים גם היום, בתחושה של ילדות מופלאה לימים מוארים באור ובשמחה והוא אחת הסיבות, שאני מאוהב בחג פורים. מפני שזה מאפשר לי ליום אחד להיות מי שאני: צוּר הקטן והשובב מלא באור, בשמחה ובאהבה לכולםן. לא לדחוף, מבטיח שישאר מקום לפעם הבאה 🎨🦋☺ "ילדותי המפוארת" רישום חדש נולד היום, מסדרת ציורי האלבום הדיגיטלי שאני מכין, (מחשבות על תערוכה🤫), אמש. . טכניקה: רישום מהתבוננות בעפרונות רישום בתמונה ישנה במגורינו ברחוב מלכי ישראל 11, @herzliya.city עבודה מקורית: @eitamstudio צילום: יוסי בן משה <©> כל הזכויות שמורות <©> .
