DAY TWO OF THE COLOMBIAN NATIONAL TRUCK STRIKE
Yesterday, truckers in Colombia went on strike against the government's plan to keep increasing the price of petrol. They have barricaded the entrance to all major cities and are not allowing the flow of any goods in or out (food, gas, anything and everything). Last night, the President addressed the nation. He was expected to explain the steps the government was taking to alleviate the situation. Instead, he literally read an email about a completely different topic.
Today, people are panic buying essentials at my local supermarket. My family has stocked up, too, just in case. In a recent poll, 51% of the country said they were considering migrating abroad. I don't blame them. I'm the only person in my age bracket that I know who actually chose to come back once they made it out. And I know it looks like madness to them, but living in the US helped me appreciate this place in a way I hadn't before. I'm fond of it now, even though it does get a little prickly sometimes.

Richard Vandiver: Owner, 📷, and still truckin’ hard 💪 Here’s what Richard has to say: How about another gone & I guess forgotten past,, I started trucking in ‘74 gross weight was 73,280 I believe… back then I remember how the truck stops really catered to the American trucker,, you went in the TS’s that really had respect for you,, areas marked off especially for you, they added the phones to your booth,(that was a plus),, if you frequent the stop,, you probably got to know the waitresses, & probably her family & she knew of yours, slower pace then compared to now,, it seems things were more personal & respectful,, because your occupation it what runs this country,,,, I live in a farming community & receive a lot of their business & appreciate it,, but BEFORE the farmer feeds us,,,don’t EVER forget,,,, who is responsible for delivering,, the new & used farm equipment & parts,, the seed, chemicals, fertilizer, etc, etc,,,& then who hauls those collected yields to the market,, trains can’t do it, ships can’t do it, planes can’t do it,,,,, until the American trucker makes it happen,,, yes, guys like Sonny & Will make it happen,, no one appreciates how many days & nites you are on the road,, terrible food you sometime eat,, DOT’s, scales, crooked cops, waiting to load/unload, crooked brokers, why,,? It’s in your blood, addicted to the grind,,something about the smell of diesel fuel & exhaust,,& how you treat & talk to your truck & it’s engine,, another town, another mile,,,, truly a big thank you to all of you old school die hards. The new generation has yet to earn my respect & everytime I hear the truckers national anthem “ 6 DAYS ON THE ROAD,,& I’m gonna make it home tonight,, i along with you know exactly what that really means,,,,,, there a good cup coffee just up the road,,,,,,, just saying,,,, I’m still addicted,,,,,,, #cdljob #cdljobs #cdlhunter #trucker #rollingcoal #dieselnation #iceroadtruckers #truckdrivers #dieselpower #cdldriver #dieselporn #truckstop #truckerslife #diesellife #trucklife #bigrig #truckersview #roadhog #cdllife #trucking #trucks #truckdriver #truckers #truckingindustry #chickenlightsandchrome (at United States) https://www.instagram.com/p/CnwfLssOSXQ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Royal Australian Navy Hmas Adelaide (ffg 01) Australia Day Hawaiian Shirt For Men And Women
The Royal Australian Navy (RAN) has a long-standing tradition of showcasing their pride and heritage through various means. One such celebration is Australia Day, a special day that commemorates the founding of the nation. The HMAS Adelaide (FFG 01), a renowned naval vessel, is often the center of attention during this time, and a unique Australia Day Hawaiian shirt has been designed to honor this iconic ship. The HMAS Adelaide (FFG 01) holds a significant place in the hearts of Australians. It is an Adelaide-class guided-missile frigate that served the RAN for over three decades before being decommissioned in 2008. The ship played a crucial role in various operations, including peacekeeping missions and disaster relief efforts. As a symbol of strength, resilience, and national pride, the HMAS Adelaide continues to be revered by both military personnel and civilians alike. To commemorate the ship's legacy and Australia Day, a special Hawaiian shirt has been created for men and women. This unique attire combines the vibrant colors and patterns of Hawaiian shirts with the imagery and symbols associated with the HMAS Adelaide. The shirt features a bold design that showcases the ship's silhouette, Australian flags, and other naval elements. The fusion of these elements creates a visually striking and unforgettable piece of clothing. The Australia Day Hawaiian shirt is not just limited to men or women; it is a shirt for everyone. It is a testament to the inclusivity and diversity that Australia proudly embraces. Whether you are a navy enthusiast, a current or former military member, or simply an Australian looking to express your love for the country, this shirt is a perfect gift option. Moreover, the Australia Day Hawaiian shirt is not just a fashion statement; it serves as a symbol of appreciation and gratitude towards the HMAS Adelaide and the men and women who served onboard. It allows individuals to wear their patriotism with pride and showcase their connection to the RAN. This unique shirt can be worn on Australia Day, during naval reunions, or simply as a casual fashion statement. It serves as a conversation starter, allowing wearers to share stories and memories associated with the HMAS Adelaide and their love for the country. It is a way to keep the legacy of the ship alive and honor the sacrifices made by the brave men and women who served on it. In conclusion, the Australia Day Hawaiian shirt honoring the HMAS Adelaide (FFG 01) is a special attire that encapsulates the spirit of national pride and celebrates the contributions of the Royal Australian Navy. It is a gift for everyone, regardless of gender or background, and allows individuals to showcase their appreciation and connection to the ship and the nation. By wearing this shirt, people can demonstrate their love for Australia and pay homage to the dedicated sailors who served on the HMAS Adelaide.

For truckers driving EVs, there’s no going back
Electric trucks still make up only a tiny fraction of trucks on the road in the United States

Gary LaBush remembers the first time he sat behind the wheel of an electric Ford e-transit delivery truck at the Frito-Lay distribution center in Queens. Like most first-time EV truck drivers, LaBush wondered if the vehicle was actually on. “I was like, ‘What’s going on?’” he recalled. “There was no noise — and no fumes.”
Now, LaBush trains other drivers on how to operate a fleet of 40 delivery trucks at the Frito-Lay facility. The 49-year-old, who has worked at the company for over two decades, said he would struggle if he had to return to gas. “I wouldn’t want to do it,” he said. “After being in this — it’s just night and day.”
LaBush belongs to a small but growing group of commercial medium-to-heavy-duty truck drivers who use electric trucks. These drivers — many of whom operate local or regional routes that don’t require hundreds of miles on the road in a day — generally welcome the transition to electric, praising their new trucks’ handling, acceleration, smoothness and quiet operation.
Story continues below advertisement
But some companies and trucking associations worry this shift, spurred in part by a California law mandating a switch to electric or emissions-free trucks by 2042, is happening too fast. While electric trucks might work well in some cases, they argue, the upfront costs of the vehicles and their charging infrastructure are often too heavy a lift.
For the United States to meet its climate goals, virtually all trucks must be zero-emissions by 2050. While trucks are only 4 percent of the vehicles on the road, they make up almost a quarter of the country’s transportation emissions.
On most of America’s roads, electric trucks are an anomaly. According to an Environmental Defense Fund analysis of the nation’s 12.2 million truck fleet, there are almost 13,000 electric trucks — which can be defined as Class 2B to Class 8 vehicles, or anything from a step-up van to a large tractor-trailer — on the road today. Around 10,000 of those trucks were just put on the road in 2023, up from 2,000 the year before.
Amazon, for example, has ordered and deployed thousands of electric delivery vans made by Rivian; the company says it has electric trucks operating in 1,800 cities in the United States. (Amazon founder Jeff Bezos owns The Washington Post.) FedEx has electric trucks rolling through the streets of Los Angeles. The logistics company Schneider has dozens of Class 8 electric semi-trucks delivering loads throughout Southern California.
Story continues below advertisement
And the drivers operating them say they love driving electric. Marty Boots, a 66-year-old driver for Schneider in South El Monte, Calif., appreciates the lightness and the smoothness of his Freightliner eCascadia semi-truck. “Diesel was like a college wrestler,” he said. “And the electric is like a ballet dancer.”
Boots, who also trains other drivers on how to optimize the battery in the electric truck, said some drivers were hesitant when first trying out the technology. But once they try it, he said, most are sold. “You get back into diesel and it’s like, ‘What’s wrong with this thing?’” he said. “Why is it making so much noise? Why is it so hard to steer?”
“Everyone who has had an EV has no aspirations to go back to diesel at this point,” said Khari Burton, who drives an electric Volvo VNR in the Los Angeles area for transport company IMC. “We talk about it and it’s all positivity. I really enjoy the smoothness … and just the quietness as well.”
Story continues below advertisement
Mike Roeth, the executive director of the North American Council for Freight Efficiency, said many drivers have reported that the new vehicles are easier on their bodies — thanks to both less rocking off the cab, assisted steering and the quiet motor. “Part of my hypothesis is that it will help truck driver retention,” he said. “We’re seeing people who would retire driving a diesel truck now working more years with an electric truck.”
Most of the electric trucks on the road today are doing local or regional routes, which are easier to manage with a truck that gets only up to 250 miles of range. “We’re building from areas that have a fairly defined route,” said Jason Mathers, associate vice president of the Environmental Defense Fund’s zero-emissions truck initiative. “Or within a fairly defined geography — they come back to the same place every night.”
LaBush, for example, drives his Frito-Lay delivery truck around the Queens metro area delivering products to supermarkets, bodegas and delis; his truck has an estimated range of 108 miles and only needs to be charged once or twice a week. “We usually don’t let it go below 50 percent,” he explained.
Story continues below advertisement
Boots’s deliveries for Schneider are more variable — most days, if his mileage tops out at 200 or so, he can remain in one truck. Other times, he says, he’ll drop the trailer and switch in a new truck if he needs longer range for the day.
Charging and range are the primary reasons some companies are hesitant to go electric — or have found the transition challenging. Jim Gillis, the president of the Pacific region for IMC, said his team has found that their six EV trucks are best suited for trips less than 25 miles. “Coming from the port to our warehouse, generally that driver can enjoy three to four trips before we have to get that charged,” Gillis said.
But Gillis worries that the transition isn’t ready for prime time. Volvo has recalled the trucks six times, causing them to rotate out of commission and forcing drivers back into diesel temporarily. “We’re not seeing a ton of qualified technicians in the shops,” Gillis said. “You’re paying a penalty when you have a truck that goes into the shop for three weeks.” The company is planning to introduce a number of hydrogen trucks to balance out their electric ones.
Story continues below advertisement
Trucking advocates say electric has a long way to go before it can take on longer routes. “If you’re running very local, very short mileage, there may be a vehicle that can do that type of route,” said Mike Tunnell, the executive director of environmental affairs for the American Trucking Association. “But for the average haul of 400 miles, there’s just nothing that’s really practical today.”
Lewie Pugh, the executive vice president of the Owner-Operated Independent Drivers Association, points out that long-haul trucking already has a parking problem: There are not enough safe and secure spaces for drivers on the road. “We definitely don’t have enough places to put chargers,” he said. “If you can’t answer that for an automobile, for heaven’s sake, forget it for a truck.”
Some truck companies and advocates say they need further incentives to push the industry into the next phase — and help getting the required power and permits to install charging infrastructure. While trucks can sometimes charge on public fast chargers, many of those fast chargers aren’t set up to accommodate something as large as a semi-truck.
The drivers who are going electric, for their part, feel that they’re on the leading edge of a big transformation. “I want to be happy that I started it,” LaBush said, “for the young kids growing up and the next generation.”

In the heart of Manhattan, high above Hudson Yards in a bustling hotel, Bitcoin Magazine’s Editor in Chief, Mark Goodwin, sat down with US presidential hopeful Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for a candid and engaging interview that shed new light on his political vision.The interview commenced with RFK's assessment of the Democratic Party and the evolving definition of a "Kennedy Democrat." According to him, Kennedy Democrats are rooted in the party's historical values of advocating for the working class, environmental stewardship, anti-war principles, and skepticism towards corporate influence. He emphasized the need to counter the undue influence of financial giants like BlackRock, State Street, and Vanguard, which control a significant portion of the economy, including military contractors, agriculture, and pharmaceuticals.One of the central themes of the interview was RFK's plan to address the growing power of tech giants and their influence on free speech and the open internet. He outlined a multifaceted approach that involves executive orders against government-promoted censorship on social media, legislative amendments to protect free speech, and summoning the heads of major social media companies to ensure political speech remains uncensored.RFK's stance on controversial figures like Julian Assange and Edward Snowden was clear. He pledged to pardon them on his first day in office, and also expressed interest in reviewing the case of Ross Ulbricht, the founder of Silk Road, to assess whether his sentence was just.The conversation then shifted towards the economy and the question of whether taxpayers would support policies that raise taxes and potentially lead to inflation to fund various initiatives, including wars and responses to crises like COVID-19. RFK highlighted the historical use of fiat currency to fund wars without directly taxing the population, noting that inflation was a form of hidden taxation.The interview took an intriguing turn as RFK discussed his interest in Bitcoin and the need for financial freedom. He shared how the government's actions during the Ottawa trucker protests, where individuals' bank accounts were closed without due process, sparked his appreciation for the importance of freedom of transaction. RFK expressed his intention to protect Bitcoin, potentially backing the U.S. dollar with cryptocurrencies and other hard assets to provide an alternative to fiat currency.The future of the U.S. dollar was another significant topic. RFK highlighted the challenge posed by the rapid globalization of the dollar and the emergence of alternatives offered by BRICs and other nations, potentially eroding the dollar's status as the world's reserve currency.Central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) were met with skepticism. RFK argued that they could become instruments of control and warned against their potential to eliminate cash currencies, ultimately giving governments complete control over individuals' financial transactions.The interview delved into the challenges of implementing Bitcoin-friendly policies, including working with a compromised Congress. RFK expressed his intent to use executive orders and Treasury policy to make changes without relying solely on legislative action.The conversation also touched on the military-industrial complex and the war in Ukraine. RFK criticized the detrimental impact of wars on both domestic and global fronts, emphasizing the immense resources spent on military endeavors that could be directed towards solving pressing domestic issues.Drawing parallels to history, RFK discussed the potential consequences of inflation and the risk of social upheaval. He underscored the importance of addressing economic disparities and protecting the ability of Americans to own homes, in line with Thomas Jefferson's vision.The interview concluded with RFK's vision of hope for American democracy and his commitment to addressing pressing issues. He acknowledged the challenges posed by powerful interests but urged citizens to watch his actions, promising to make a difference.
In a political landscape often dominated by familiar faces, RFK's unconventional approach and commitment to tackling powerful interests make him a notable candidate worth watching. His dedication to preserving individual freedoms, addressing economic disparities, and promoting financial independence through Bitcoin sets him apart in the crowded field of presidential hopefuls.

How I accidentally lied to Loves
I like to surround myself with people who hold the same appreciation of Loves (yes, the truck stop/gas station) as I do. My mum likes Loves. My da likes Loves. Even my coworkers like Loves. Whether that's because they're ex-truckers and knew from experience, or were worn down enough by me talking about how great it is to just begrudgingly start liking it.
I like Loves.
It's my go-to sleeping arrangements, so much so that I will drive two hours or more over my preferred daily limit just to sleep in one. I had been in close to twenty of them before I noticed... the Loves Reward card.
Ah... Look at it. Beautiful. I knew Loves had a rewards program, so the next time I went in to get a shower I asked the person at the register - could I get a rewards card?
She pulled it off the display and handed me my very. own. Loves Reward card. Wonderful. It was the second coolest thing in my wallet behind my National Parks Pass. I took my shower, then downloaded the Loves app (for free soda and other deals) (Yes I'm plugging Loves for free, bite me).
?
How odd. There was nowhere in the app to connect the card. Hmm... No matter, I'd just use the barcode if I wanted a deal. But every time I went to get a shower, expecting them to ask for my card, they would just tell me the total. And I'm too socially anxious to ask to use the card right?
So I sat on that thought. For a while. Fast forward to last week, I'm in a Loves, once again, getting a shower. And the lady at the counter asks the question.
"Do you have a Loves card?"
I was so excited, I pulled it out of my wallet and scanned it for... an error message. Everything clicked into place in my head as I pulled out my credit card to pay. The guy behind me pulled out his Loves card and said I could use his shower (drivers get them free with a fuel up. Thanks Idaho Falls guy, you won't be forgotten.).
See the card above? See how it says 'Professional Driver'? Notice how I'm not a professional driver? The app is available for casual drivers and truckers, the card, on the other hand, is only for truckers. That cashier so long ago thought I was a trucker. And so did the lady that day when I asked for a shower.
I have been mistaken for a trucker, at least twice.
#yes i am keeping the card#they cant use it anymore anyway#the dumbest shit in the weirdest places#traveling#travel#road trip#driving#idaho#loves#loves travel stop#truck stop#is this whole post just simping for a corporation? yes#my ex-driver friend is still mad about it lmao

Bringing minors to protests, supplying fuel can be prohibited under the Emergencies Act
With the federal Emergencies Act now invoked, federal ministers say “the work begins now” to implement it, with a desire to not have another weekend of protests in the nation’s capital. This comes as the government has revealed part of their motivation for enacting the powers was out of concern for “serious violence” for “political or ideological” achievements.
“We now have the tools to do what needs to be done,” Emergency Preparedness Minister Bill Blair told reporters Tuesday following a cabinet meeting. “That work begins now, and we have to continue with that work until we get the job done.”
Not long after, addressing the latest steps—including publishing the order invoking the public order emergency to end the trucker protests and blockades—Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino indicated they’d like to see the now 19-day occupation ended this week.
Capital Dispatch: Stay up to date on the latest news from Parliament Hill
“No one wants to see another weekend like the last three on Wellington Street. And I'm assured by my discussions with the police that they fully appreciate that, and we now depend on them to do the job,” he said during a press conference, noting that the RCMP and the OPP are assuming command and control over the enforcement operations in Ottawa.
Among what authorities can now prohibit under these emergency powers is:
bringing children under the age of 18 to participate in trucker convoy protests;
travelling to or from a protest site with the intention of taking part or offering support like supplying fuel;
travelling to Canada as a foreign national with the intention of participating in convoy protests;
taking part in so-called slow-rolling by motorists intent on impeding the free flow of traffic; and
crowdfunding sites have to register with a federal financial oversight body if they are in possession or control of any funds associated with the convoy.
Officials are also designating areas such as airports, ports, truck depots, hospitals, trade corridors, and international crossings as protected.
“These measures will be enforced today,” said a senior official briefing reporters on a not-for-attribution basis.
Over the last three weeks the anti-mandate and increasingly anti-government protesters have engaged in demonstrations at border crossings and around Parliament Hill, capturing international attention and costing tens of millions of dollars in policing costs, as well through interrupting trade, and prompting the shuttering of Ottawa businesses.
NATIONAL SECURITY JUSTIFICATION
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau declared the public order emergency on Monday, and according to the declaration made public on Tuesday, out of concern in part for the demonstrations being carried out alongside threats or acts of “serious violence against persons or property… for the purpose of achieving a political or ideological objective.”
“There is a state of emergency throughout the country justifying extraordinary measures on a temporary basis,” reads the document.
Among other reasons given by the government for enacting the Emergencies Act:
The risk to Canada’s COVID-19 economic recovery and ongoing economic security;
The adverse effects to Canada’s relationship with its trading partners, particularly the United States;
The availability of essential goods and implications of supply chain disruptions due to continued border blockages; and
The potential for an increase in the level of “unrest and violence,” threatening the safety and security of Canadians.
These additional details on the rationale for enacting the powers were issued in a proclamation published through Order in Council, on Mendicino’s recommendation.
The document states that the public order emergency “exists throughout Canada,” but Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Monday that the powers will be geographically limited to the regions that need them.
“This is something that is important for Canadians to know, that there will be consequences for people who are breaking the law and people who are supporting those who are breaking the law… People should go home,” said Trudeau on his way into question period on Tuesday, where he faced a fury of questions from the opposition parties over the major step.
'QUICKLY OPERATIONALIZE'
Mendicino said Tuesday that the declaration will “enable the government to quickly operationalize and bring to life the words which appear in that declaration.”
While the Coutts, Alta. border blockade has been resolved after the RCMP seized a cache of weapons on Monday and arrests have been made elsewhere, a “cautionary tale,” said the public safety minister.
“Yesterday's arrests in Coutts should be a cautionary tale about what it is that we are precisely dealing with here, the seizure of a significant number of illegal firearms by a group that is very committed to the cause, is something that we need to be very sober about,” Mendicino said. “Now, as absurd and as outlandish as the claims may be of this group, one only has to survey the damage that has been caused over the last number of weeks.”
Meanwhile, the news of the new powers has not deterred protesters in Ottawa, where the local police chief resigned on Tuesday. This major development follows the federal government stepping in, in part to ensure what Mendicino has called a “lawless” situation lead by a “small organization with a very extreme ideology” in the nation’s capital is resolved.
“There's an important job yet to be done to restore order and provide effective policing services to the people of Ottawa,” Blair said.
'We do have a plan' to end occupation, Ottawa interim police chief says
With trucks now condensed more within the parliamentary precinct, participants remain largely dug-in and adamant they’ll hold their ground until the government capitulates and revokes all COVID-19 vaccine mandates and restrictions, a step federal authorities have dismissed.
Asked Tuesday whether the government is anticipating having to use force to remove the protesters who remain intransigent in the face of multiple layers of injunctions and emergency orders, Mendicino said, “we certainly hope not.”
“The invocation of the Emergencies Act and the declaration that follows with it sends a very powerful message and hopefully a deterrent to rational and fair-minded individuals who may think that they're just participating in a peaceful protest, but are actually now co-mingled with something that is much more nefarious.”
During a police board meeting on Tuesday, interim Chief Steve Bell said he believes the service is now in a position to bring an end to the occupation, which board chair and city councillor Diane Deans referred to as a “carnival of chaos,” with 172 active criminal investigations but just 33 charges laid.
Police said that the number demonstrators had dwindled to 150 overnight, amid frigid temperatures, with still approximately 360 vehicles in the downtown core, down considerably from the estimated 4,000 vehicles present at the outset of the protest at the end of January.
'OTHER TEMPORARY MEASURES'
The cabinet order also offered a limited amount of additional detail as to which “special temporary measures” are being enacted under the Act.
Specifically, as announced on Monday, the federal government is:
Enabling the RCMP to have the jurisdiction to enforce municipal bylaws and provincial offenses and allowing them to integrate into the operations of the local police of jurisdiction;
Prohibiting taking part in a public assembly where it’s considered a breach of peace and goes beyond lawful protest, including limiting the travel to, from, or within a specified area;
Regulating or prohibiting the use of certain property, including goods used to support the blockades and seeing corporate trucking insurance revoked;
Designating secure and protected places and infrastructure that are critical to the economy such as border crossings and airports;
Compelling those capable to render essential services to relieve the blockades with reasonable compensation, including “services related to removal, towing and storage of any vehicle, equipment, structure or other object that is part of a blockade anywhere in Canada”;
Authorizing financial institutions to essentially stop the financing efforts, including moving to freeze or suspend protest-affiliated accounts or assets and requiring crowdfunding platforms to report certain transactions; and
Imposing fines of up to $5,000 or imprisonment of up to five years on those who breach any of the above orders.
It also leaves open the nondescript and potentially wide-spanning potential for the government to enact “other temporary measures… that are not yet known.”
Senior officials said Tuesday that the compelling of tow truck drivers will address an element of the enforcement that’s been “impaired” to-date.
“We know that tow truck operators and companies have been either threatened or intimidated or in some instances cooperating with some of the truck convoy. So it has been very difficult for police to manage,” said an official. “I'm very comfortable in saying that, you know, through good dialogue and good communications, there will be agreement between the tow truck operators at this point.”
Facing questions about some concerns being raised that invoking the Act was an overreach, Justice Minister David Lametti said what the government is doing is “quite proportionate given the damage that these blockades are doing.”
Once a declaration of a public order emergency is issued, as it was on Monday, it is considered in effect, and unless the declaration is revoked or extended, it will expire after 30 days.
The government still has to table a motion in both the House and Senate to allow the two parliamentary bodies to confirm it, within seven sitting days, which Government House Leader Mark Holland said Tuesday morning is coming “imminently.”
The clock started ticking for this motion to be presented the moment the Act was put into force.
Both the House and the Senate have the power to revoke the declaration at any time prior to its expiration, as does the government.

If it's any consolation, I'm sure that the Advisors and the rest of the MLA (Re-Destro, Trumpet, Geten) will show back up sooner than the final arc, just because we're going into Year 2 and the students would find great 1 on 1 or team opponents with the Advisors. Re-Destro and Geten are heavy hitters (and Geten could be tied to Dabi, Shoto and all that somehow) and they were locked up with Mr. Compress and Machia, but who do you want to see first from the Advisors?
Thanks, anon; I certainly do hope we'll get to see more of them. Admittedly, my main concern is that I so liked what was going on with the Paranormal Liberation Front that even if we do see all of the MLA types again, if it's only in the context of speedbump battles for the students, that's still going to be a letdown. Better than nothing, to be sure, but I really do want them to join back up with the League, even a League that's confused and out of sorts under All For One's hand. I love RD's big spiritual-awakening-flavored crush on Shigaraki, the cross-organization tensions and relationships, just as much as I love the depth the MLA brings to the world outside of just what's going on with the heroes.
I'm fairly frustrated with how the MLA fared during and after the raid, largely because it's awfully hard not to conclude that, if what we have right now is all the erstwhile-MLA are ever going to come to, Shigaraki would have been significantly better off if he'd just killed them all and shacked up with Ujiko for four months. And that would be such a waste! The end of My Villain Academia was such an enormous triumph for Shigaraki! I want his victory to amount to something more than what we've seen, something that shows that both his strength and his mercy will pay off for him in the long-term, will be a concrete benefit to him rather than, with the benefit of hindsight, the reason everything went so wrong.
Particularly with Re-Destro, since Horikoshi saw fit to have Dark Shadow all but one-shot the man, and Edgeshot defeat him off-panel, it's really not going to mean much to me for him to have a big fight with students unconnected to anything else. The drama's rather gone out of it at this point. That's particularly the case since, if he's no longer connected to Shigaraki's plot, it's that much easier for him to just be off-paneled and forgotten about. But, if Rikiya gets looped back in with the League, if his gratitude and admiration of Shigaraki mean he still has a role to play in Shigaraki's arc, that makes it much easier to get invested in any fights that role will lead him to. Ditto the MLA more broadly; it's categorically ridiculous to present that organization with the kinds of numbers, breadth of influence and legitimate grievances they have, only to try to sweep them back under the rug exactly like Shigaraki accuses heroes of doing with everyone they can't save.
To say the least, I'm pretty invested. But I appreciate your consolations and am trying to hold out hope that we'll get some good stuff with them yet!
My anxieties aside, and to hit the other portion of your ask--who would I like to see first among the Advisors?--hit the jump:
(All nicknames and shorthand are taken from this post.)
Well, it'd be nice if they could all get at least as much to do as the Eight Bullets back during the Hassaikai arc, seeing as they got a similar splash page spread introducing all their faces. There are considerably more than eight of them, of course, but even if they never get more attention than e.g. Galvanize or the hose-faced guy who iced Midnight did, at least then we'd have some idea of their power sets and at least one angle on their personality.
Assuming we aren’t going to get full breakdowns on every single one of them, there are still four things I'd really like to see happen with the MLA/the Advisors: the student fights we're expecting, the jailbreaks we're being told about, the reunion with the League I'm praying for, and for literally anyone in the in-world media to try and get their side of the story.
Student Fights: Seeing the guy who killed Midnight again is as sure a bet as any of these get. Momo is an important enough character, with enough sustained arc, that she will have to get something else to do before the series is over. Taking command of a group battle against real opponents--ones with more responsiveness and agency than Gigantomachia--would be in-line with what she's been moving towards so far. I would, however, love it if that fight would be more challenging than a straightforward battle of tactics.
I headcanon Hose Face and Scarecrow as, respectively, an ex-con and a dude with physical disabilities--both people who have ample reason to want to change the series' status quo irt human rights abuses in prison and overly restrictive quirk use laws. I'm not expecting the canon to validate me on what amount to wild guesses, of course, but I want those Advisors in particular to have motivations more nuanced than, "They're quirk supremacists; who cares why they're willing to put their lives on the line over this?"
A feel-good revenge match in which a bunch of teenagers lay the smack down on characters whose humanity the audience is asked neither to know nor care about would be lazy, and counterproductive to the series' current thematic concerns. Give Momo her victory, by all means, but don't give it to her easy. A confrontation like this would be a good way for the less central Class A students to begin wrestling with the question of who, exactly, heroes "save" and what it is that people need to be saved from, exactly the way Deku and Uraraka and Shouto are now wrestling with these questions.
As far as other fights go, I'd also love to see Brand and The Question pop up again. They're probably the two I'm most curious about purely in terms of what their quirks are. Why does The Question wear a mask, and what's he like that he wound up in Mr. Compress's chain of command? And with Brand, what kind of quirk does he have that's powerful enough to land him a ranked position in the Guerilla Warfare Regiment but indirect enough that he fights with a sword?
Prison Breaks: I wouldn't expect this to be particularly involved, probably more of an aside than anything, but I want the Bindi Ladies to spring Hole Punch Face, thus getting us an angle on what's going on with that particular trio. Aviator Teeth can come too because I want at least some hints about what his deal is.
I'd also love to watch Horikoshi even attempt to retroactively justify some of the logistics of the single-day capture and subsequent detention of 17,000 super-powered, combat-trained people.* I mean, I don't think there are any feasible explanations for that, but I'd be curious to see what he'd come up with, especially if every possible answer just makes Hero Society look worse! We have only ever seen Tartarus as an example of the prison conditions in this country; I'd love to hear more, and an MLA-focused jailbreak would be a great way to show it.
PLF Reunion: Of course, my number one thing to see with a reunion is Re-Destro being just as dismayed as Spinner is over Tomura's possession. I crave more serious attention being paid to Rikiya's profound awe over Shigaraki's freedom, and would love to see his reaction to Shigaraki apparently losing that freedom.
Aside from the obvious, though, if the PLF does start piecing itself back together, I expect to see Sanctum again, given the attention he's gotten so far, and the fact that he's now the highest-ranked member of the Tactics Regiment. It'd be great to get some explanation for how he can possibly be "the longest-serving member of the Liberation Army," given that the Army was generations old already when Re-Destro was just a child. (If we do get that information, I imagine my own explanation will be jossed hugely, so I would also be happy to take time with Sanctum that doesn't explain the discrepancy but also doesn't invalidate my headcanon.)
In the context of the regiments reforming, I'd also like to see Nimble and Aster, both because this manga needs more women, and because I'd like to see more of how Spinner and Toga interact with the people they were nominally commanding.
Media Attention: Trumpet's my number one hope here--the lack of any look into the state of the government in HeroAca Japan has been a total let-down since his introduction**, but I was particularly annoyed that the last time we saw him he was smiling (albeit in a fairly haggard way), giving me hope that we might next see him doing his part to portray all of this in a light that would sway public opinion. And then literally one chapter later, we get prison guards talking about how the Hearts & Minds Party, a perfectly legitimized political party with representation on the national level, has been perfunctorily dissolved less than twelve hours from when the raid started. How is there even an argument that the system heroes were upholding desperately needs to change?
I'm very tired of the media in BNHA only ever showing up to beg for/demand that heroes tell them what’s going on, particularly those damn press conferences. Journalists do investigative work! Newspapers employ reporters to actively seek out news! Reporters in free countries don't just sit around waiting for the government or heads of major industries to graciously hand them press releases! For heaven's sake, Trumpet was the head of a major political party. People should be foaming at the mouth trying to get a statement from him!
Especially with public trust in heroes breaking down, there should absolutely be intrepid reporters out there looking to get to the bottom of any of the layered conspiracies the public's just been hit with and told to just write-off as a bump in the road on the return to normalcy.
Anyway, Trumpet's the obvious choice, but if I could be sure the manga would validate my headcanons about Nimble and Scarecrow's disabilities, I'd be happy to put them in this position, too. Trucker Toad would be another good candidate, if there's any basis to my idea that he is or used to be a transport driver who's seen a lot of the country outside the areas e.g. the Top Ten Heroes are patrolling. He's obviously a good candidate for getting back to that idea of anti-heteromorph bias, too. But really, I'd take anyone who can give a cogent explanation of the MLA's position on self-determination and the various ways Hero Society has exacerbated quirk-based discrimination.
Anyway, that's about where my thoughts are on where I hope the MLA people are and what we might see of them. Thanks for the ask!

*Or as many as 100,000 more than that, depending on how through the statement, "Their bases around the country were also attacked, and their supporters rounded up," was meant to be. An influx of 116K people, incidentally, would triple Japan's current carceral population.
**Why! Why would you introduce a politician and then never even glance at your setting's political situation??

Memphis, Tennessee
My first night in Memphis I settled into my AirBnB-- a large ground floor of a duplex decked out in music-related imagery, furniture and knick-knacks-- then drove downtown for a late dinner at Belle Tavern, a newish upscale Southern restaurant and bar. The restaurant was closed (which saved me some money) so I ate off the bar menu and chatted with the friendly staff. That night I enjoyed the biggest, longest thunderstorm I’ve ever witnessed-- from the comfort of my bed.
On my last visit to Memphis I did most of the interesting things here so I decided to use this time to catch up on this blog, The Economist, my Portuguese lessons, travel planning and exercise. On my first day I finally left at 1pm and headed to Gus’s for their world-famous friend chicken. It does not disappoint. Then I headed to the National Civil Rights Museum which I had been sad to miss last time.
It’s housed in the former Lorraine Motel, where Dr. King was shot. When it opened in 1991 it was the country’s first civil rights museum (and it’s affiliated with the Smithsonian, which is how it became “National”). The museums I had just seen in Birmingham and Jackson are considerably newer and are in states that witnessed a lot more action in the struggle. (Tennessee was also a Jim Crow state but its racists were apparently less murderous.) The experience is heavy from the start. As you approach the highly recognizable motel, you see a wreath hanging on the balcony where Dr. King was felled. A plaque then directs your eyes to a run-down brick building across the street and the window in the former boarding house from which James Earl Ray fired the bullet (allegedly-- more on that later). After a deep breath, I entered the building.
This museum stands out from the others I visited in two main ways. First its focus is national, not on a specific state. Second, it’s arranged not chronologically but episodically. So after introductory sections on slavery, Plessy and Jim Crow, each room tells the story of a notable episode during the struggle: Brown, Rosa Parks, Freedom Rides, Bombingham, lunch counter sit-ins, March on Washington, etc. At first I didn’t like this, as I thought, one, it would glamorize certain people and events while ignoring the “foot soldiers; and two, the historical timeline would become confused thus lessening the impact. The first concern was unfounded as the display were extremely detailed and thorough. And the non-sequential approach ends up also having merits; visitors can fully immerse themselves in the parts without getting lost trying to piece them together. The only problem is the crowds (which a sign in the lobby warned about). I ended up sandwiched between a tour group and a high school group and so scurried through some areas I would have liked to explore more. In part the museum design is to blame-- it’s confined to the original small structure of the Lorraine-- and in part it’s because addresses a popular, important subject, so the crowds are a good thing.
The museum also ends the story in a novel way. The passage of the Voting Rights Act is the first ending, but there are several codas. First, visitors enter the recreated rooms of the hotel where Dr. King was staying, and a window reveals the balcony as well as a view of the assassin’s building across the street. It’s very powerful. Following coverage of the immediate aftermath of his death, the displays then turn to the Black Power and Afro-centrism movements of the lates 1960s and early 70s, followed by the enduring legacy of the Civil Rights Movement. I think it’s inspired to point out that even tho the concept of Black Power doesn’t sit as comfortably with many whites as Dr. King’s non-violent resistance, it’s an equally important part of the same struggle. This museum also highlights throughout the many inequalities that blacks still face, such as the way most cities and schools are still segregated and the black political representation is still short of its potential.
And then things get really interesting... Across the street, in the boarding house where the assassin’s bullet came from, a newish wing examines the manhunt and trial that put Ray in jail (and displays the purported rifle). It then details the controversy that has surrounded the assassination ever since: the idea that Ray didn’t do it, that he didn’t do it alone and/or that he acted at someone else’s behest. Three separate commissions looked at the evidence, including the Justice Department and FBI in 1999 and 2000, and these displays very carefully and thoroughly present their findings. These investigations debunked some theories, but they raise A LOT of questions, and visitors are left to draw their own conclusions. Ultimately the more recent commissions decided Ray probably acted alone (tho they deemed a lot of witnesses, police and prosecutors unreliable) but he probably expected payment. From whom is unknown; the suspect list is quite long. It’s rare that a museum (especially a National one) would treat “conspiracy” theories so thoroughly and with such gravitas-- and not really try to dispel the conspiracy. Imagine the Kennedy Presidential Library doing that. I believe this reflexes the belief of some of the King family that Ray did not act alone and their attempt to uncover the truth.
All that mystery made me hungry again so I ate at nearby Central BBQ which was obviously delicious. Then it was home for more catch up. For dinner I was craving something non-Southern so I went to Los Comelos. I thought it was a nice-ish Mexican restaurant, but it turns out to be a local family chain. Food was tasty enough tho. Then it was over to the Pumping Station for some drinks and conversation before bed.
On Thursday I woke up and headed to nearby Cooper-Young for breakfast. The neighborhood was not as happening as I thought it would be so I drove north up Cooper Street (Midtown’s main drag) to a good ol’ diner called Barksdale. After a cheap, basic, tasty breakfast, I continued north to the Overton Park neighborhood which was much more bustling than Cooper-Young. I drove in and around the park to peep some of the shmanciest homes in the city.
I then drove to Stax Museum of American Soul, the legendary studio that produced some of the biggest, best soul acts of the late 60s and early 70s. The 20 minute film that starts the tour really tells you everything you need to know, but the following displays go into much greater detail. I appreciated how they taught musical history, describing the sources of various influences like gospel, country and blues and how these all converged in Memphis. The museum also seeks to tell a broader story of black music, so it also features contemporaries and followers like Motown, Mussel Shoals, funk and disco and fairly give credit (and blame) where it’s due. The artifacts are numerous but not all that impressive-- mainly records and covers along with some clothes. (One big exception is Isaac Hayes’ gold trimmed, fur lined Cadillac with TV and fridge accompanied by a video of him describing how awesome it was.) The best part of course is the music and videos. The Stax story, like so many in the music industry, ends sadly and in bankruptcy. In fact it’s only in the fine print at the end that we learn the original building was torn down in the 80s and the current one is a recreation. That feels like kind of a gyp, but overall it’s a good experience and a good lesson in music history.
The rain returned that night so I just walked to the closet bar/restaurant, Young Avenue Deli. Seemed like a fun place (with a stage!). As I was leaving, trivia night was beginning. The first question was “What two countries share land borders with Sweden?” Is that what passes for trivia in Memphis?! On the way home I stopped for beer at the very friendly Hammer & Ale bar/store.
The next morning I set out for Nashville. I had planned to take the Natchez Trace Parkway most of the way since it’s a lovely, historic road. But it was raining across the entire state so I opted for the I-40 straight shot. Driving for three hours in rain was hellish, and the road was surprisingly crowded and torn up and the drivers pretty incompetent and/or inconsiderate (especially the truckers). But the scenery was pretty, especially the second half. I must have passed at least 20 state parks full of fall-colored forests, as well as some lovely water ways and charming farm houses. It almost made of for the misery of the drive.
