Trigger warning - National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month occurs every October.
During the entire month, people take time to honor and remember those who have lost a child during pregnancy or lost a child in infancy. Dealing with death in the family is never easy.
I have spoke about this in the past 4 years but I had an early miscarriage before Winnie and at the time I didn't have much support or understanding - it can be a very isolating experience. I spent the night in hospital as they thought it was ectopic. You blame yourself, you question yourself. Whether the pregnancy was wanted or planned it's such a sensitive subject and each experience, each person is different. You can't compare one person to another and you never should. How I view that particular situation now is that it was meant to happen or Winnie (my youngest) wouldn't of happened and sure, being a single parent is hard but the moment I gave birth to her and held her in my arms I just felt (cliché to say) but like my family was complete and perhaps this is how it was meant to be, however, I always acknowledge it happened. I've had 4 pregnancies.
"Angel Baby," "Sunshine Baby," and "Rainbow Baby" are terms that refer to babies born just before or after another baby is lost due to a variety of reasons. They help immediate family members move through the grieving process and find meaning in the loss.
There are many things that raise awareness like the #waveoflight and the #NeverBeStill campaign seeks to break the silence surrounding stillbirth and other pregnancy/infant losses by not only educating the public about ways to support bereaved families but also empowering expectant mothers to have a healthy pregnancy – because every pregnancy deserves a happy ending.
Pregnancy and Infant loss Remembrance Day serves to promote greater Awareness, Remembrance and Support of the estimated 1 in 4 individuals and families whose lives are irrevocably altered by the death of their children, during pregnancy, at birth and in infancy. The aim of the day is to:
• Raise awareness of the need for support
• Encourages people to talk
• It honors the babies who have passed.

Trigger warning; miscarriage. infant loss
While it’s that time of year (one of my favorites) to bury myself in fall aesthetics and silly Halloween memes, it’s also a time in which certain individuals are calling out for support. Tomorrow is National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day. On this Day, October 15th at 7 pm, grieving parents light a candle all around the world.
Since many are not aware that there is a designated national day for remembrance for miscarriages, stillbirths or infant loss. 1 in 4 women experience a pregnancy or infant loss in her lifetime. 1 in 6 in miscarriage. 1 in 160 in stillbirth. SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) is the leading cause of death among infants 1 to 12 months old.
Regardless the kind of loss, the grievance is severe. The biggest shame is that this is often treated as a taboo topic among other annual awareness's and in general. So I’d like to take time to inform and provide resources and help people recognize the loss so many parents around the world experience.
National Pregnancy Loss and Infant Loss Day
As someone who has gone through this loss, it was very difficult to talk about, even to my own family. The shame and the guilt of my body failing my little one was a constant burden on my shoulders and the result of all that put me in a severe depression. 20% of of women who have had a miscarriage become symptomatic for depression and/or anxiety, 15% can have these symptoms between 1 to 3 years. I myself was part of the 15%; this affected my work performance, my relationship with my spouse, and proper self care. Not only that, it had affected how I was as a parent to my eight year old son. It took me a year to realize how nearly absent I was and I knew I needed help fast. I finally gained the courage to speak to a therapist and others about my loss so I could move forward and be a better person and parent again.
Depression and Anxiety Following Pregnancy Loss
Of course, no one ever tells you that the pain doesn’t go away. I have moved passed mourning and depression but the thoughts of what could have been still lingers. Me and my wife spend every October 15th and due date (November 7th 2019) and remember our little girl. I suggest parents who have gone through this take the time to remember their lost ones and even invite friends and family to participate in these occasions.
How to Honor a Pregnancy Loss
Also, remember, there are many nonprofit organizations out there that are both nationally and internationally who focus on various supports for parents, from research to health and just simply offering emotional support to help families cope. Parents, please take the time to reach out. And for anyone else out there, please donate what you can to aid these organizations.
Pregnancy and Infant Loss Organizations
My DMs are always open. If anyone who is suffering needs an ear to listen, I’m here. It takes a lot of strength to get through this difficult process but remember there are those who share your pain and we are always here with open arms.

What do I even title this mess?
Incoming wall of text about my personal life. Turn back now before it's too late if that's not your jam. No hard feelings.
So. Yup. I'm still alive. And still aware that I left a wip hanging with one blasted chapter remaining. And yes, that annoys the completionist in me. I know that I've left asks and messages unanswered and have been largely absent from Discord. I'm really sorry.
As some of you know, I discovered that I was pregnant back in August.  It was exciting but soooo exhausting. I wasn't nauseous or moody, thank God, but damn was I ever tired. I slept so much, putting much of my life on hold with the hope of picking things back up again once I was clear of the first trimester, because that's how it tends to work.
Almost before I knew it I was on the cusp of the 12 week mark. We had just told our family the good news (my mother was beside herself with happiness, she had thought we might never get around to makin’ babies). I was starting to feel a bit better. Cautious plans were being made for the nursery now that we were past those early months when the risk of complications is high. Things were good.
Then I started spotting.
The spotting turned into light bleeding and mild cramps.
A few hours later I was in the emergency department, listening as the doctor explained as gently as he could that he couldn't find the baby's heartbeat and was I sure of my dates because I only measured 7 weeks. .
The next day, on National Miscarriage, Stillbirth and Infant Loss Awareness Day no less, I took medication to induce ‘labor’ and passed the products of conception while my husband held my hand. I was so delirious with pain that I didn't even recognize the baby when it passed, I mistook it for another blood clot. I wish I'd said a proper goodbye.
Now it's been, wow, four weeks since then. I'm probably 80% recovered mentally. I still cry whenever a hospital chart comes across my desk for a miscarriage or stillbirth. But I recognize and appreciate the good that came out of this situation as well and I'm really trying to focus on the positives, like the love and support my husband and I have gotten, and the better care I'll receive during my next pregnancy now that I've had a missed miscarriage (you get VERY minimal prenatal care here if your pregnancy appears normal).
Physically I'm not sure how I am? I feel fine, but won't know for sure it's all over until I either get my period again or get my bloodwork done at my next doctor's appointment.
So uhhh *eyes the rambling thing I wrote* that's where I've been since, like, August. Too tired and then too sad to fandom. But I'm back.  It's time to do like Iggy would and soldier on with as much grace and dignity as I can muster.

Attention all Colorado Families- My husband and I- along with several local organizations- are putting on a community healing event this Saturday.
The owner of Cereal Box Inc. reached out to me shortly after my story aired and said she too had a tough road having lost three babies along the way. We decided to partner up along with a local organization called At the Table to host a community conversation for families to come and talk, get resources, lean on each other and keep connected to a community that's often grieving in silence. And it’s perfect timing as October is National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month.
This Saturday- come to the Cereal Box in Arvada anytime from 4-6pm. It's free and we will have so many resources for you-  including family therapist- if you are having a hard time talking to your kids about loss, or connecting with your husband or wife. A naturopathic doctor for any medical questions you have.  The National Organization 'Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep' who can talk about community events to connect others together.
And representatives from the Beautiful Scar Project whose mission is to provide families grieving the death of their infant due to miscarriage, stillbirth, and neonatal death the tools to turn the loss of their much loved and desired baby into a beautiful scar.
This isn't only for women, my husband will be there to chat and kids are welcome as well! No need to register anywhere, just come, chat with us, share your story, get your questions answered and leave feeling like you are not alone- because you aren't.

"When a child loses his parent, they are called an orphan. When a spouse loses her or his partner, they are called a widow or widower. When parents lose their child, there isn’t a word to describe them."
- Ronald Reagan, 40th President of the United States October is recognized as National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month to both recognize the loss so many parents experience across the United States and around the world, and to inform and provide resources for parents who have lost children due to miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, molar pregnancy, stillbirths, birth defects, and other causes. October 15th is observed as Pregnancy and Infant Loss (PaIL) Awareness Day around the world. We remember our babies gone too soon! At exactly 7:00PM, on October 15th, people all around the world join together in the International Wave of Light, by lighting a candle and keeping it lit for one hour. Also tonight, the Peace Bridge, portions of Canalside Buffalo and Niagara Falls (between 10PM and 10:15PM) will be lit in Pink and Blue to honor our babies gone too soon.
