MARCH '24 COOPERATIVE SELF CARE CHALLENGE
whew, that was close! results are in:
say it with me, everyone:
i pledge to do something physical every day this month!!
set a daily physical goal for yourself that fits your health and your body right now. it should be SMALL and EASY. something your brain will be hard-pressed to find an excuse not to do. here are some examples:
stretch or do yoga for a few minutes every morning when you wake up
spend at least ten minutes outside every day
go for a short walk every day
do a mini exercise routine every day (like this one which requires no equipment)
practice a skill or hobby that uses multiple parts of your body
work on a physical project such as gardening or home improvement
you can also set larger goals for this month, if you want! that could mean joining a sport or signing up for martial arts classes or learning a new active skill or hiking at a national park
-----
personally, im committing to stretch every morning. i want to improve my balance and flexibility so i can get better at rope dart (and just scampering around in g eneral). im also going to try to go outside every day though!
i will reblog this post every morning when i stretch and probably again later whenever i touch grass. if you would like to be tagged for reminders at one or both of these times, please let me know!
-----
be completely free to reblog any version of this post. i want it to be a monstrous, snarled, sprawling tree of self-love and encouragement by the end of the month. challenge your mutuals to join!
if you miss a day, that's okay! this isn't some all or nothing tiktok trial. the goal is to build healthy habits to improve your physical and mental health.
and in case somebody didn't get the memo: THIS IS A MENTAL HEALTH SKILL. mental wellness and physical activity are INEXTRICABLY linked. being inactive is a MAJOR contributor to depression. if your life sucks, getting out of bed and going outside isn't going to make you feel good- but it IS going to make you feel LESS BAD.
-----
if you voted for something else: sorry! you're still encouraged to challenge yourself however you want to this month- its your life- and you're welcome to still hang around this post and brag about your daily accomplishments! or you can always start your own chain- its free :o
and hey, if not ill be back next month with another poll ^^

Tell me about the latest AU you've got rotating around your head π₯Ίπ₯Ίπ₯Ίπ₯Ί RIGHT NOW. RIIIIGHT NOW. AGOIRHHGREHORHIW GHOR GHIW π
I call it "Twin Souls Au" and it's mostly an exercise.
Chinese mythology has this persons called Wu (ε·«) which were shamans. By the late Zhou dynasty, Wu referred mostly to female shamans, while Xi refers to male ones. But for this Au I take Wu to mean a gender-neutral Shaman. As it says in the Shang oracular inscriptions:
whether the Wu is a man or a woman is not known;
it could be either the name for a function or the name of a people (or an individual) coming from a definite territory or nation;
the Wu seems to have been in charge of some divinations, (in one instance, divination is linked to a sacrifice of appeasement);
the Wu is seen as offering a sacrifice of appeasement but the inscription and the fact that this kind of sacrifice was offered by other persons (the king included) suggests that the Wu was not the person of choice to conduct all the sacrifices of appeasement;
there is only one inscription where a direct link between the king and the Wu appears. Nevertheless, the nature of the link is not known, because the status of the Wu does not appear clearly;
he follows (being brought, presumably, to Shang territory or court) the orders of other people; he is perhaps offered to the Shang as a tribute.
And yes, I copied that from Wikipedia. Another one:
"men and women possessed by spirits or gods, and consequently acting as seers and soothsayers, exorcists and physicians; invokers or conjurers bringing down gods at sacrifices, and performing other sacerdotal functions, occasionally indulging also in imprecation, and in sorcery with the help of spirits." - The Religious System of China (vol 6) 1910
It's more complicated than that but Wu are basically the jack of all trades of chinese magicians.
What I focused on are two specific Wu:
The sacrifice
They are people, usually women and disabled people, who were burned at the stake to bring about rain. They themselves are an offering to the gods. CofCofShenJiuCofCof. They are also mediums for the spirit world.
Fangxiangshi
He is referred to as "The one that sees in all four directions" and wears a mask of bearskin with four golden eyes, and carried a lance and shield.
His primary duties were orchestrating the seasonal ritual to chase out disease-causing demons from buildings, and leading a funeral procession to exorcize corpse-eating wangliang spirits away from a burial chamber. Which he did by violently getting into buildings, houses included, and energetically thrusting his spear into the air.
He is a seer, and one that can conjure visions only he can see. Like a certain nerd who read the "book of fates for PIDW"
Wu were often a pair of siblings that are referred to as a single entity. Like two souls in a single body.
To the actual story:
The day of the transmigration, just as SY's soul is getting settled into SJ's body, a pair of heavenly officials (unimportant who) comes to get them for some important thing they have to do in heaven (Because more often than not, one is born a Wu), as Wu are also bureaucrats.
Man is Yue Qingyuan confused. He was there taking care of his ailed shidi and suddenly someone comes and takes him away before he can say anything. He naturally calls for a meeting and all peak lord are on the case to get him back (some more reluctantly than others)
The Ku Xing Peak Lord or whoever is in charge of rituals and divination gets them permission to go get SQQ (As they already did the thing they had to do), but only YQY and LQG are allowed. So they go.
In the heavenly realm (Not heaven outright) they see SQQ siting calmly in a gazebo on the garden, reading. More relaxed than anyone has even seen him.
SQQ sees them and, without letting them speak, says: "I'm not dealing with this"
And he separates from the body.
The body (SQQ) is let in a sleep like state while a tiny, tiny, Shen Jiu comes out of it. He looks perhaps 10, wearing ceremonial robes that only reach his knees. Shen Jiu takes his book and screams for "A-Yuan" to come take his turn.
Then, another 10 y.o. comes out of the house the garden belongs to and immediately protest upon seeing the adult cultivators. He is identical to Shen Jiu, dressed the same, but wears short hair (angled bob) and has a mask winkwink hanging from his neck.
This A-Yuan and Shen Jiu proceed to banter for a while, ignoring both YQY and LQG.
What happened was: Time functions differently in the heavenly realm; ergo, Both Shens have spend a lot of years together and already consider the other their sibling. And their dynamic is to fight and banter... so normal siblings.
Long story short; The Shens are send back to the mortal realm to work and solve mysteries because the heavenly officials were tired of them, and fight over who uses the body.
No one want to use it. They have to be responsible when they are SQQ and it's bothersome. Also CQM keeps trying to make them come back and be a peak lord but solving mysteries is more fun.
#svsss#shen yuan#shen jiu#shen qingqiu#TwinSouls Au#Writing exercise#This is a no romance story#only gremlins and mysteries#I know this was a silly ask but I've researched to much about this to not mention at least this much#Ask

An explosion shatters his reality as a helicopter crash plunges him into chaos and darkness, his right arm gone. Surrounded by synthetic figures in cold cells, he feels a haunting connection to their silent longing to be free. In the rain-soaked streets of New York City, he stands, an outsider amidst the vibrant chaos, grappling with his existence as stoneage's passive yet reluctant warrior.

I know it's super hard to not feel like you should have done more with your life (at any age honestly) but if you can, try to get into the mindset that the most important thing you can be is kind, because you can do that a little bit every day and it's always an accomplishment c:
(Alternatively your birthday is also national gardening exercise day and national yo-yo day, so if you need a distraction you could do something to celebrate those)
that is so sweet and kind of you to say, thank you for sending this π©΅ and yea. being kind is so very important, because sometimes itβs the only thing i can do. kinda off-topic, but itβs one of the many reasons why i love everything everywhere all at once, because waymond saying βbe kindβ hit me real hard in the heart and i think about it a lot.

Jess Piper at The View from Rural Missouri:
I have three grandchildren with a fourth on the way. We have had the grandkids for a few days now, and I am sneaking in this writing between dozens of snacks and cups of milk. Between petting the donkey and chasing the dogs. Between coloring and swinging. Between trying to keep the kids from picking my flower garden and eating my tomatoes still on the vine and trying to put them down for naps. I am physically exhausted by the last few days, but I need to tell you something: The past week has been filled with a scary rise of Christian nationalism and we need to listen to what they are saying out loud to figure out the future our children and grandchildren will face if we fail to keep Trump out of the presidency in November. This past Monday, July 8th, Josh Hawley stated that he is a Christian nationalist. You likely havenβt even heard of his comments. The frequency of elected Republicans saying the quiet part is so fast and furious that we often donβt blink an eye anymore. This isnβt the first time Hawley has been quite specific about his ahistorical point of view and his dangerous zealotry. βSome will say Iβm calling America a Christian nation. And so I am,β Hawley said at the conferenceβs gala dinner. βSome will say Iβm advocating Christian nationalism. And so I do.β
Christian nationalism is on the rise across the country, but it already has legs in Missouri. It is strongly linked to evangelical, born-again identity and frequent church attendance. The Public Religion Research InstituteΒ foundΒ that 30% of Americans qualify as sympathizers or adherents to Christian nationalism, including 40% of Missourians. Forty percent.
[...] My grandchildren deserve to live in a state, in a country, with religious freedom and that means that they should not have forced indoctrination in public schools or forced tithes through religious school vouchers. They shouldnβt have to be a specific religion to receive help and aid from their lawmakersβ¦and, letβs be honest, that religion is evangelical Christianity. I canβt leave, I canβt look away, and I definitely canβt be quiet about the rise of Christian nationalism in my state. It wouldnβt matter if I did leave, though. This is the plan for the entire country if we donβt stop Trump in November. Missouri is the embodiment of Project 2025. Donβt look away. Share this with others. This is what they want for the entire country. Missouri has been running the pilot project for years. We stop it when we buck our lawmakers and refuse forced religion. We stand up and speak out. We lock arms and refuse to allow this to happen. American lawmakers should remember: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof. We stand on the Constitution. We are on the right side of history.
Jess Piper is spot-on 100% with this quote on how to stop Christian Nationalism and Project 2025: "We stand on the Constitution. We are on the right side of history."

I miss living with my grandparents:
The Raisin Bran, the smiling sun whose scoops I mistook for shoes, the impression of Tony the Tiger my Papa did in his cheerful, shaking voice, the heavy smear Country Crock Butter across cinnamon-sugared toast and cups upon cups of white grape juice. I miss everything. At breakfast theyβd give me sips of their tea, a spoon of my own to steal their grapefruit, theyβd watch the morning news that Iβd undoubtedly hear again in the evening,
I miss Gardening gloves, gardening clogs soon softened by morning sunshine, lawn chairs, crape Myrtles and magnolia and gardenia, reading the funnies tummy-down on the patio while Grandma looked for coupons for a gift for Papa and watered her Harrison roses before the sun got too hot and high in the sky
While I prayed weβd have visitors at the hummingbird feeder, bright with red the same color as Grandmaβs ruby ring, prayed for birds at the bird feeder, prayed for birds to splash in her birdbath, prayed for birds at her birdhouses, prayed for birds so she would hush me and whisper their Latin names that I never remembered
The only Latin i heard was in church and from her mouth and to me that meant something
Sheβd check the rain gauge while papa marched to the 80s exercise VHS tapes and old TV, convex bubble of a screen in front of a couch too close for watching, subtitled, and
Walking and
walking to the rhythm of a woman faded into green and red static and music,
In the garden my grandma sang ballads of women scorned in a soft voice; I wondered as a child if my grandma couldβve been a singer herself and now wonder if it was nostalgia for her too as she sung, warbling and smiling around her chipped tooth,
She spoke like music, highs and lows and accented in ways that I now have and canβt bring myself to be ashamed of, her mouth lined in a mauve lipstick I look for on drugstore shelves
Afterwards I watched her fold her robes, freshly washed after the Sunday service that sheβd sung at the day before, her voice there indistinguishable in the choir, hidden with a modesty that frustrated me
I miss Prairie Home companion on the drives over to the mall in her pickup to find those gifts for Papa, syllabant sβs and jokes I didnβt get, absently being scolded for itching bugbites, for picking the craters and sidewalk-chalk dust their pebbled driveway left in my knees- a plastic cup of sweet iced tea and a molasses cookie my reward for being so patient
As though Iβd rather be anywhere else
As though I couldnβt spend hours in the piles of National Geographic, dog eared around the Hubble Telescope, the bats, the migration of the monarchs, hours in my uncleβs comics with the advertisements for ten-cent gum and muscle pills, hours in the postcards kept in a hatbox, hours in their yearbooks filled with white women named carol and men who looked much older than their age, hours in their books of poetry my mother read at my age
Papa would pass me sheets of printer paper, handfuls of jellybeans, lend me rock-hard erasers and fountain pens as easily as crayons and tack every drawing to the fridge
The only things on their fridge was my birth announced in a paper and the drawings, and that meant something to me
Hours passed quietly, the booms of the giant grandfather clock always silenced by Papaβs handiwork when I stayed over despite getting over my fear of it years ago, same as the thunder that rolled over their little house, now a comfort
Raining, pouring, the old man snoring
And soon he was, fast asleep as grandma scooped my spaghettios into a saucepan, made me promise to keep their kitchen clean, condensation on faded glass sat atop doilies sat atop glass-covered tables, and I stayed clean with everything in me, helped put plates in the sink I couldnβt see over, cleaned with needlepoint towels and soap the scented brightly with jasmine
The evening newscaster, handsome and solemn, recounted the day, and Iβd eventually migrate to the plush carpet so faded from sun darkened to the golden beige in the afternoon, the recliner with the same leathery skin as them where Iβd watch basketball games late into the night, coved in the old tied-felt blankets I gave as Christmas gifts, sleepily hearing them open the lids of multivitamins
The slow clacking on the keyboard, printing maps for the next day,
, Their opening of candy, kept cold in the fridge, snuck to me with silent, crinkle-eye grins despite my fullness from ice cream: Peppermint Patties and twizzlers tough as jerky, chocolate chip cookies I warmed between my hands.
Clasped like prayer, selfishly hoping to never return back to my hurricane-wrecked family

Tosa Calling
Although I know it's been a year since Like a Dragon: Ishin! released, it wasn't until I came back from my trip to Japan that I managed to find some time to sink into the hefty title. I know, I know. It's shameful! But in my defence, last year I was swamped with games. And lengthy ones to boot!
I mean, given the evidence, I think, dear readers, it would not be wrong for me to ask that y'all give a gal a break. Especially because playing video games and writing up my impressions of them is a hobby. And having a full-time job does not make playing games, reading books and writing stories any easier. Throw in the FOMO from watching whatever is popular on streaming and also socialising with real-life people, I think the fact I manage to get through games at such a steady clip is a commendable exercise.
Anyway, back to the topic at hand. Or, at controller, if you'll pardon the terrible attempt at wordplay.
Unlike the Yakuza games that came before it, Like a Dragon: Ishin! is a game set in the mid-1800s as Japan grappled with foreign diplomatic and military pressure to change. And instead of stepping into the shoes of Kiryu Kazuma, players are thrust into the shoes of one Sakamoto Ryoma - a real-life historical figure who advocated for democracy, return of power to the Imperial Court, abolition of feudalism and the modernisation of Japan during the Bakumatsu period.
Of course, Like a Dragon: Ishin! does take a more fanciful approach to their interpretation of history as they have Ryoma playing double-duty with another real-life historical figure: Saito Hajime - Captain of the Shinsengumi's 3rd Division.
But, hey, what's a bit of artistic licence to give us some excellent blockbuster action scenes and build up a conspiracy about the Tosa loyalist party and the best interests of the budding nation of Japan? Why not even throw in a fight with Scottish merchant Thomas Glover too (which was passingly strange for me to deal with considering I visited Glover Garden while I was in Nagasaki while in Japan and failed to find nary a mention of how the man duked it out with Ryoma with a set of twin pistols)?
As always, Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio keeps the main story dramatic and relatively grounded with Ryoma on a quest for revenge when his adoptive father Yoshida Toyo is assassinated. The majority of the game then takes place in Kyo (the modern day equivalent being Kyoto) as Ryoma tries to hunt down the man responsible. He does so by deducing the style of swordplay and looking for dojos who teach Tennen Rishin.
It isn't long before he is informed that the Tennen-Rishi is practiced by the Shinsengumi. Ryoma soon joins the organisation, hoping to whittle down who among the captains was the killer.
Along the way, he must deal with a second 'Sakamoto Ryoma' who is trading with guns and other weapons to the Satsuma Domain and hatch a civil war in Japan in order to take out the Shogunate that had reined for nigh on 300 years. It later turns out that this second 'Sakamoto Ryoma' is his brother and leader of the Tosa Loyalist Party: Takechi Hanpeita (another real-life historical figure).
While the game does incorporate actual historical events such as the Ikedaya incident and the assassination of Sakamoto Ryoma at Omiya Inn, it does certainly take quite a few liberties of the actual events. Like how the person assassinated at Omiya Inn was just a stand-in and both the actual Ryoma and his brother Takechi survived for a final battle back in Tosa as they engage in battle due to competing ideologies.
From a gameplay perspective, Ishin! only really incorporates one of the fighting styles from the Yakuza games. This, being of course, the brawler style. As Ryoma is a samurai, he also had a swordsman style (my default one that I used for most of the game) and mixed it up with the occasional use of a revolver. While these all had a variety of different abilities, I found myself focusing on swordsman and wild dance throughout most of my playthrough as they easily ripped through the fodder you faced on the streets and were mighty effective against bosses as well.
Unlike the other games, Ishin! also introduced the concept of troopers. This boosted Ryoma's health and granted him additional abilities that could be triggered in the midst of battle, such as triggering additional damage or conjuring a gravity well to draw all the enemies to one part of the battle arena.
This helped mix-up the combat, especially after hours of using the same moves and combos throughout the game.
Boss battles, too, forced me to vary my strategy. Rather than brute forcing my way through most enemies, I'd often have to play more defensively - seeking to use my stronger attacks only when necessary and throwing in the occasional heat action to give Ryoma some breathing space.
But while the story and the combat are worthy of praise, it was the side content in Ishin! that stole my heart. I loved all the wacky stories Ryoma somehow got suckered into. As is RGG tradition, there are also numerous minigames such as singing and buyo dancing. True, it didn't have a crane minigame but it DID allow me to play rock, paper, scissors with a geisha.
And my gosh, I have never been so glad my mother doesn't often see what I'm playing when I first went through the song: Truehearted Samurai. Initially, I was confused there were live-action actors. Then, I was bewildered when they started acting flirtatious even as I was trying to nail most of the notes for the very fast-paced song.
To be fair, the Sensual Healing portion of the geisha interactions also earned a raised eyebrow from me.
As for buyo dancing, it was probably the most tame of the mini-games (at least when it came to salacious material), but it was difficult to master. I'm no slouch when it comes to rhythm games and I very much enjoyed the dancing mini-games in Yakuza 5 and Lost Judgment but Ishin! was a different beast entirely with how it implemented its controls.
Overall though, Ishin! is a must-play for Yakuza fans. Though its replaced the shady crime drama with an historical period plot, it still retains the heart and soul of the Yakuza games. Especially because many of the character models have been reused, like Kiryu Kazuma acting as both Sakamoto Ryoma and Saito Hajime. Then there's Goro Majima as Okita Soji and Taiga Saejima as Nagakura Shinpachi.
Oft times, I had to ask myself if I wasn't just playing another Yakuza game with just a historical skin on top.
True, maybe I should have instead dived into Rise of the Ronin (I will play this game eventually as I've actually bought it), but Ishin! took precedence. Besides, it's not every day that one gets to play as THE Sakamoto Ryoma.
For anyone who might say otherwise, I'll shall simply retort with: ee ja nai ka.

Hold Me Like a Grudge (Gavin x Lasko Royal AU) Ch. 9
The new prosthetic is damn near perfect. The correct fit, the right length, material that doesn't chafe or clunk weirdly on the floor, takes some getting used to. And Lasko still tries to draw attention away from it. But it helps a lot.
He trains daily to keep his mind and body sharp, physical therapy combined with general exercises and the drills that he would run in the military. It gives him a sense of structure and normalcy that his days at the castle, while pleasant, lack. He works slower when his leg pains him, but never skips a day, and before long, he's as quick as he was before the bomb.
He trains in his bedroom, or the garden when the weather is nice. Sometimes, curious staff will gather to watch, oohing or cheering or asking questions he's happy to answer. Occasionally, Gavin will visit, voice soft but expression intense. Lasko is a little nervous then, in a way he normally isn't during drills. He doesn't mind Gavin's eyes on him (at all), and he's confident in his skill, but unaccustomed to "putting on a show."
"Just pretend I'm not here," Gavin would tease, as though such a thing were possible. Lasko tries, but Gavin's gaze and intermittent comments make him warm. It's obvious even to Lasko that Gavin is paying more attention to Lasko's body than what he's doing with it. He doesn't think about it, though. Not until he's very, very alone, and has quadruple-checked that he's not accidentally broadcasting to Gavin.
He has plenty of practice ignoring thoughts and feelings and urges and gorgeous men. Pushing it down or refocusing it into energy for training.
One day, Gavin asks to join him.
"Join me in...combat training?"
"Yes," Gavin says brightly. "I think there's a lot I could learn from you. Maybe we can even spar." Lasko chews his lip.
"Respectfully...you'd kick my ass." Gavin laughs.
"Don't be so sure! I haven't done much fighting." Lasko sighs.
"Maybe not. But you're still a demon. And despite my training, I'm still human." Lasko looks away, and Gavin frowns, considering.
"How about this," he says, opening his palms to Lasko. "No magic. That will do away with most of whatever natural advantage I might have." Lasko still hesitates.
"Why?"
"Why what, Precious?" Lasko flushes.
"Why do you want to train with me? Surely your time could be better spent elsewhere..."
"Because I like you, Lasko." Lasko looks up sharply to see Gavin looking calm and serious. "I like spending time with you, and learning about you." He smirks a little. "And the orgies will still be there later." Lasko sputters.
"Wh--o-orgies--"
"Do you have an extra practice sword, or do I need to make one?"
"I, ahem, I-I have one."
"Wonderful," Gavin smiles, reaching up to pet Lasko's cheek. "Let me know when you're ready."
So they start training together. Not every day, just on occasion. It's nice to spend more time with Gavin, and to have another person to work with again. Gavin really has no formal combat experience, but he learns quickly, and they start stringing sparring sessions together with library visits or shopping trips or time spent curled up in one or the other bed, talking quietly with faces close together.
Lasko wants to kiss him. Wants to do more than kiss him.
And Gavin would probably be receptive, if the way he lets his eyes and hands wander is any indication.
But Lasko doesn't want it to be just physical.
And he's afraid that, as much as they like each other (as much as he thinks Gavin likes him,) sex would just be sex, like it always had been before. Something fun and pleasurable that doesn't mean anything beyond that.
He buries his face in his hands and groans. Who does he think he is?
He doesn't have the right to expect more from anyone, much less a king. Gavin is smart and kind and handsome and powerful, the ruler of a great nation of people who adore him. He could--and does--have his choice of partners. If he wants more than sex, it would be simple enough to choose someone better than Lasko. Someone better at relationships. Someone whose body and spirit are whole, not broken.
His life in Deciderium is already so much better than it could be, than he thought it would be. Rather than being used and abused, he's treated like a person, given care and respect and the opportunity to learn and grow and make friends. He has made friends.
Why does he think he could have more?
The military was something he could control, to a degree. He could train and study and work and fight and make a difference in his life and the lives of others. It was the only thing he had really done without someone else telling him to pursue it first. General Moore was so much of his identity for so long that even after months away, he still isn't sure who he is beyond that.
Whoever he is is in love with Deciderium and its people and its king.
Tears burn his eyes at the realization, but instead of wiping them away, he just stares at the ceiling and lets them fall. What is he doing?
A knock at his door startles him into sitting up. He and Gavin had made plans.
"C-come in," he calls. Gavin steps into the room, and the smile drops off his face.
"What's wrong?" he asks immediately, sitting on the bed and taking Lasko's face in his hand. Lasko just shakes his head miserably. "Come here," Gavin murmurs, and Lasko goes easily into Gavin's tight hug. "It's alright. I've got you. You're okay."
He's not, but Gavin saying so makes him feel a little better.
"Do you want to stay in today?"
He nods.
"Okay. Scoot over, I'm gonna cuddle you."
He does, and Gavin wriggles under the covers with Lasko, wrapping him in his arms and resting Lasko's head on his chest, where he strokes his hair and back soothingly.
"Thank you," Lasko whispers, tangling his fingers in the back of Gavin's shirt. He's so tired.
"You're welcome, Dearest," Gavin replies. "Rest. I won't leave you."
Warm and safe in Gavin's arms, lulled by his steady heartbeat, Lasko falls asleep. And Gavin is still there when he wakes.

Take a Hike!
ambulatory - adj. - able to walk about
Years ago, when we wanted to rid ourselves of someone's presence, we used the creatively idiomatic, "Take a hike!" as opposed to the current pithy, degenerate, "Fuck off!" which has fallen into overuse, losing its profane punch. But this article isn't about verbal expression albeit it could be. It's about the value of being ambulatory, taking literalβnot figurativeβhikes.Β
If you live in California, like I do, you don't think twice about hiking miles as the occasion presents itself constantly. In the past week or so, the digital odometer on my ubiquitous iPhone has clocked over twenty miles, which for a senior over 65 is pretty impressive. Along with one of two partners in ambulation, I traversed Mirror Lake in Yosemite (seven miles), the Hollywood Reservoir (3.5), Huntington Gardens (five), the Baldwin Hills (2.5), and the streets of West Los Angeles (two). In short, we covered swaths of some very beautiful ground and took in some outstanding views along the way. What was even better was that we treated our bodies to some outstanding exercise.Β
Just what are the health benefits of taking a hike? According to the U.S. National Park Service, hiking builds strong muscles and bones, which we seniors tend to need in particular as our bones become more brittle as we age. It also improves balance (although I personally keep clear of edges on the way up the sides of steep inclines), heart health, and minimizes the risk of some respiratory problems. It also reduces stress, high blood pressure and cholesterol, the incidence of some cancers, excess weight which could lead to diabetes, and boosts mental health. Unlike meds, it won't rob your wallet. Pretty darn good.Β
Hiking is better than ambulating on a treadmill in a gym because it allows for time in the fresh air and provides limitless space. And if you are constantly moving forward, you don't have to worry about any intrusive insects although I would recommend bug repellent if you are planning to hike in some of the national parks as gnats can be a problem. In addition, it is an inexpensive form of socialization, often recommended as a second dateβproviding you hike in a well-visited areaβas it enables you both to enjoy nature, be physically active vertically (before any talk of the horizontal), and chat quietly without distractions.
Wow! Taking a hike is a lot more than I thought it could ever be. Back when we used the idiom in the derogatory sense, we didn't take into consideration all of the pluses of the literal act, which is perhaps why we don't hear the expression used anymore. If you told someone to "Take a hike!" today, the person might understand it to mean that you care deeply about him, her, them. Which is not bad. Hmm. I like it when things change for the better, something you don't see too much these days.
So what are you waiting for? Get out there and take a hike!Β
