well all i can say about HBO's anti-union message in that bts video is that AS A KIWI ACTOR/STAGE/SCREEN INDUSTRY WORKER who isn't being strongarmed by a corporation into saying shit that they agree with
the hobbit laws suck. peter jackson is universally despised. what that man did with warner brothers and the national government to make our laws worse for workers so he could film his bad films here in the late 00s is akin to several crimes.
we WANT union protection! we WANT to be able to strike! i'm a member on the Equity NZ (union akin to SAG-AFTRA) committee for Wellington and the amount of work that's going on behind the scenes at the moment to claw back worker protections from our fucked up local laws is immense.
most of us aren't allowed to strike. most people working at wÄtÄ (the big screen production house), as well as on most screen/stage jobs are employed as contractors, so they're taxed exorbitantly, have no sick leave, have no holidays, have minimal protection from harassment or being taken advantage of.
long hours? being burned out? that's the kiwi way of living in the screen/stage industry and it SHOULD NOT be celebrated.
The Screen Industry Workers Act of 2022 has fixed some of that but there's still so much to go. yknow how SAG-AFTRA is fighting over residuals? here, we don't even know her.
i know all this personally and intimately.
i was taxed 39% on my contractor income last year.
only now that i'm a salaried worker can i afford to get my teeth fixed.
i had to get a legal action from a lawyer from ANOTHER UNION to get paid for one of my contracts in 2021 because the production team didn't like how i spoke up about their lax health and safety rules (this was a contract I was nominated for one of the most prestigious awards in the country for my work on, fyi)
sexual harassment is rife. what support is there? basically none. we hope it comes out in the media, or it doesn't change and there's nothing we can do cause we'll get sued into oblivion.
ive worked multiple 12+ hour days with only a tiny break in the middle or none at all. friends of mine have done 10-16 hour night shoots.
i've burned myself out multiple times in five years of professional practise cause that's the expected thing. that's what you do. if you're not working at 150% the entire time then you're a bad arts industry employee.
in conclusion, fuck off with your anti-union message, fuck you for utilising our weak-ass laws and HBO i'm in your walls
if you're in the US, support the Entertainment Community Fund! if you're a screen/stage worker in NZ, join Equity!

The first major solo museum presentation of fourth-generation Navajo weaver Melissa Cody (b. 1983, No Water Mesa, Arizona) spans the last decade of her practice, showcasing over 30 weavings and a major new work produced for the exhibition. Using long-established weaving techniques and incorporating new digital technologies, Cody assembles and reimagines popular patterns into sophisticated geometric overlays, incorporating atypical dyes and fibers. Her tapestries carry forward the methods of Navajo Germantown weaving, which developed out of the wool and blankets that were made in Germantown, Pennsylvania and supplied by the US government to the Navajo people during the forced expulsion from their territories in the mid-1800s. During this period, the rationed blankets were taken apart and the yarn was used to make new textiles, a practice of reclamation which became the source of the movement. While acknowledging this history and working on a traditional Navajo loom, Codyâs masterful works exercise experimental palettes and patterns that animate through reinvention, reframing traditions as cycles of evolution. Melissa Cody is a Navajo/DinĂŠ textile artist and enrolled member of the Navajo/DinĂŠ nation. Cody grew up on a Navajo Reservation in Leupp, Arizona and received a Bachelorâs degree in Studio Arts and Museum Studies from Institute of American Indian Arts, Santa Fe. Her work has been featured in The Barnes Foundation, Philadelphia (2022); Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Bentonville, AR (2021); National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa (2019â2020); Museum of Northern Arizona, Flagstaff (2019); SITE Santa Fe (2018â19); Ingham Chapman Gallery, University of New Mexico, Albuquerque (2018); Navajo Nation Museum, Window Rock (2018); and the Museum of Contemporary Native Arts, Institute of American Indian Arts, Santa Fe (2017â18). Codyâs works are in the collections of the Stark Museum of Art, Orange, Texas; the Minneapolis Institute of Arts; and The Autry National Center, Los Angeles. In 2020, she earned the Brandford/Elliott Award for Excellence in Fiber Art.

HALESTORM's LZZY HALE And JOE HOTTINGER Announce 'The Living Room Sessions' 2025 Tour
Lzzy Hale and Joe Hottinger of Grammy-winning hard rock band HALESTORM have announced an intimate tour featuring the two of them performing acoustic, stripped down versions of HALESTORM favorites and the music that has inspired the band. Dubbed "Halestorm's Lzzy And Joe: The Living Room Sessions", the tour consists of 12 dates in January 2025. A full list of dates is below.
A special BLABBERMOUTH.NET presale will begin on Thursday, October 24 at 10:00 a.m. local time and end on Thursday, October 24 at 10:00 p.m. local time. When prompted, type in the presale code "2025FREAKS" to access tickets before the general public. Check back here on Thursday for ticketing links to individual shows. General on-sale will be Friday, October 25 at 10 a.m. local time.
To give fans a taste of whatâs to come at the shows, today Lzzy and Joe posted a sneak preview of a performance of "The Silence".
Lzzy states: "With this tour, we're inviting our fans to experience what it would be like hanging with Joe and me in our living room: picking up instruments, telling stories, chatting about songs that helped shaped us as a band and brought us to where we are today."
Joe adds: "Back when we decided to quit our day jobs and make music our full-time endeavor, Lzzy and I would play music wherever we could, and sometimes that meant playing acoustic covers in any bar or restaurant that would have us. That time really allowed us to develop our playing skills and dig into songwriting, and it really set the groundwork for what HALESTORM is today."
"Halestorm's Lzzy And Joe: The Living Room Sessions"Â 2025 tour dates:
Jan. 08 - Flint, MI - The Machine Shop Jan. 10 - Bloomington, IL - Bloomington Center for the Performing Arts Jan. 11 - Des Moines, IA - Hoyt Sherman Theatre Jan. 13 - Springfield, MO - Gillioz Theatre Jan. 14 - Little Rock, AR - The Hall Jan. 16 - Chattanooga, TN - The Signal Jan. 17 - Biloxi, MS - Hard Rock Live Jan. 19 - Pensacola, FL - Vinyl Music Hall Jan. 21 - Savannah, GA - District Live at Plant Riverside District Jan. 22 - Charleston, SC - Charleston Music Hall Jan. 24 - Springfield, MA - Aria Ballroom/MGM Springfield Jan. 25 - South Burlington, VT - Higher Ground
In a September 2024 interview with PK of Louisville, Kentucky's ALT 105.1 radio station, Lzzy spoke about the progress of the recording sessions for HALESTORM's follow-up to 2022's "Back From The Dead" album. Lzzy said: "We've had three separate sessions in the studio with â we're making a record with [producer] Dave Cobb. And he's actually a huge closet metal fan, and so he's really excited. And so we're making this great music, but we're constantly touring. So we've had, like, three different sessions in the studio. We're probably â what? â 70, 80, maybe, percent there. We have a studio in our house and so I'm doing a lot of the finishing touches on vocals and sewing everything up, doing solos and all that. And then we get back in in December to just say, 'Okay, this is good.' And then, yeah. And then there we are. So we're excited about it. We really are."
Cobb has shared in nine Grammy wins, including four for "Best Americana Album" and three for "Best Country Album". He's also been named "Producer Of The Year" by the Country Music Awards, the Americana Music Association (twice) and the Music Row Awards, and has been a Grammy nominee in the category.
HALESTORM and I PREVAIL recently embarked on summer 2024 co-headlining tour. Produced by Live Nation, the trek kicked off on July 9 in Raleigh and ran through August 17 in Las Vegas. HOLLYWOOD UNDEAD and FIT FOR A KING served as support. The tour was also the catalyst and the creative spark for HALESTORM and I PREVAIL's collaborative track "Can U See Me In The Dark?", which was released in June.
"Back From The Dead" has tallied over 100 million streams worldwide. Rolling Stone called the title track "a biting but cathartic howler about overcoming all obstacles," and that song as well as "The Steeple" marked their fifth and sixth number ones at rock radio, respectively. Associated Press said the album "will definitely be in the running for best hard rock/metal album of the year." Their previous album, "Vicious", earned the band their second Grammy nomination, for "Best Hard Rock Performance" for the song "Uncomfortable", the band's fourth #1 at rock radio, and led Loudwire to name HALESTORM "Rock Artist Of The Decade" in 2019.
Fronted by Lzzy with Arejay, Hottinger and bass player Josh Smith, HALESTORM's music has earned multiple platinum and gold certifications from the RIAA, and the band has earned a reputation as a powerful live music force, headlining sold-out shows and topping festival bills around the world, and sharing the stage with icons including HEAVEN & HELL, Alice Cooper, Joan Jett and JUDAS PRIEST. Additionally, Lzzy was named the first female brand ambassador for Gibson and served as host of AXS TV's "A Year In Music".

Another Wood-engraved Feathursday
JOHN MCWILLIAMS
Now here's a couple of intense fellows! The print is entitled Sparrow Hawk by South Carolina artist and engraver John McWilliams (b. 1941). The print was selected for inclusion in the Fourth Triennial Exhibition 2020-2022 of the American wood engravers society, the Wood Engraversâ Network (WEN), and this image is from the catalog for that traveling show.
McWilliams's work is inspired by Lowlands flora and fauna, so it seems a little odd that he would choose as his subject the Eurasian Sparrow Hawk (Accipiter nisus) rather than the American Kestrel (Falco sparverius), which is so common to his native habitat. Both species are used in falconry. Nevertheless, both offer something for the engraver, and we enjoy how McWilliams's Sparrow Hawk looks like it's about to take a bow.
John McWilliams received his BFA and MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and is Professor/Director Emeritus of Georgia State University Ernest G. Welch School of Art and Design. He has received numerous awards, including the Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship and the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in photography. Today he maintains a studio in McClellanville, S.C. He counts as his inspirations the work of Albrecht Dßrer and the German expressionists, the illustrations of Rockwell Kent, and the graphic novels of Lynd Ward and Frans Masereel. Of working in wood, he writes:
Woodcuts and wood engravings . . . have held much fascination for me. . . . The process of developing an image into a woodcut or wood engraving gives structure to my life. . . . It is such sweet irony that, although the act of creating gives my life structure, it nevertheless produces an enigma, a puzzle that others may interpret through their own lives. There are no easy answers. Such is life.

Billionaire Demands Portrait's Removal from Australia National Gallery
Gina Rinehart, the richest person in Australia, has reportedly called on Canberraâs National Gallery of Australia to take down a painting of her by Aboriginal artist Vincent Namatjira.
It wasnât immediately clear what had moved Rinehart, a donor to the National Gallery of Australia, to make the request, but it was clear, at least, that Namatjiraâs portrait was viewed as being not the kindest representation of her. Both the Guardian and the Sydney Morning Herald used the word âunflatteringâ to describe the picture, which renders her skin a pinkish color, exaggerates the folds on her chin, and turns her lips downward into a frown.
The painting is one of nearly two dozen portraits that appears in Namatjiraâs current retrospective at the museum, which traveled the show from the Art Gallery of South Australia in Adelaide.
In Australia, Namatjira is well-known and much-loved. He became the first Indigenous artist to win the Archibald Prize, a prestigious Australian award for portraiture, in 2020.
Rinehart earned her fortune in the mining business and is currently chairwoman of Hancock Prospecting. She has periodically made national headlines in Australia for a string of controversies, most notably her decision in 2022 to stop funding a netball team after an Indigenous player asked not to have the Hancock Prospecting logo featured on her uniform.
According to the Sydney Morning Herald, in April, Rinehart personally asked NGA director Nick Mitzevich and NGA chair Ryan Stokes to deinstall the Namatjira portrait. The museum declined to do so. âThe National Gallery welcomes the public having a dialogue on our collection and displays,â the museum said in a statement to the publication. ...

Special Message from Jun Maeda
âHello, everyone, this is Jun Maeda. You may have heard of the global craze for taiyaki inspired by the work Kanon, but are you familiar with its original creator and head writer, Naoki Hisaya? I had the honor of being a sub-writer for that project. Naoki Hisaya started the trend of âvisual novels that make players cry,â a pursuit that I have passionately followed for over 20 years. The pinnacle of this journey is Heaven Burns Red. Whereas Hisaya used sophisticated storytelling techniques to evoke tears, I took a rather direct approach, and thatâs the essence of Heaven Burns Red. To think that this work would be released in places where he sparked the taiyaki crazeâsuch a delightful coincidence feels like fate. We eagerly look forward to sharing Heaven Burns Red with you. Thank you.â Jun Maeda, a Japanese writer and composer. He is considered a pioneer of visual novel and his notable works includes AIR, CLANNAD, Little Busters!, and Angel Beats!.

Marcus is a self-proclaimed "lover not a fighter". He's known to be very friendly and approachable, with a significant portion of the Formula 2 grid mentioning that he was the driver they got on with best in the paddock during his time there. His results in F2 were mixed, moving teams in 3 successive years, as he sometimes had difficulty getting to grips with the F2 car and tyres, however itâs generally agreed that his midfield championship positions during his F2 tenure arenât an accurate reflection of his genuine ability and talent. Multiple Ganassi team members (including the boss) have commented on how impressed they are by his raw speed, work ethic, and attitude since his arrival in IndyCar. Marcus himself has already talked about how much more enjoyable the Indy car is to drive and how much fun heâs having now after several years of struggling with the notoriously difficult F2 car. He also appears to be getting on well with his CGR teammates and in particular has talked about how much he likes Marcus Ericsson.
He moved to London in early 2022 after spending several years living near Ferrariâs HQ in Maranello, Italy, and is known to enjoy city nightlife, being a big fan of wine. Heâs a major foodie who likes taking photos of good food almost as much as he enjoys complaining about bad food. He is known to be determined to the point of stubbornness, causing himself permanent damage to his knee during a half-marathon due to refusing to stop when he was in pain. He had a low attendance record at school due to focusing on his racing career and moving to Europe at the age of 14, and as such, although heâs not unintelligent heâs known to be somewhat lacking in general knowledge (such as thinking Shakespeareâs first name was Michael). However, he has the characteristically Kiwi dry, sarcastic sense of humor and very much enjoys mutual teasing and banter with his close friends, something thatâs often on display in the Screaming Meals podcasts.
Fanfic Lore
Usually paired with Callum Ilott, or F2 driver Clement Novalak due to their extremely close and physically affectionate friendship - was Clemâs teammate during their karting days, and has said that they talk every day while heâs in the US Likes to tease Callum and wind him up to his face, but often calls him his best mate and praises him when heâs not around. However Callum rarely (if ever) reciprocates the latter, probably due to his intense Britishness Good friends with multiple drivers from various series, including Juan Manuel Correa, JĂźri Vips, Guanyu Zhou, Nick Cassidy, Max Fewtrell and Felipe Drugovich Also has a tendency to âadoptâ younger drivers and refer to them as âlittle broâ, including Jak Crawford and Dino Beganovic Has said on several occasions that he doesnât wear underwear, and also shaves his legs (and possibly elsewhere, having claimed that he is âhairless from the eyebrows downâ) Claims he canât tell the difference between someone being nice to him and someone flirting with him
credit for most of this post to @whitewindhowl and friends

Jean-Michel Meurice (French, 1938 â 2022).
A student at the Ăcole des Beaux-Arts in Tournai, his youth was marked by a dual passion for painting and cinema. In 1960, while serving in the army in Algeria, he produced one of his first works that brought his two passions together: a three-hundred-metre-long painted film whose motif is composed solely of the repetitive traces of fingers and brushes; projected onto a screen, it is transformed into a moving painting lasting ten minutes. Since then he has pursued a dual career as a painter and film-maker.
In 1963 he made his first trip to the United States, where he discovered painting that was free of codes, the abstraction of Ad Reinhardt and the dripping and all-over processes that had made Pollock famous.
He painted repetitive shapes (stripes or dots) on large formats, using spray cans or sponges. The traditional canvas was often replaced by plastic sheeting or other unusual supports. In 1966 he exhibited at Jean Fournierâs in Paris with HantaĂŻ, Degottex, Buraglio, Parmentier and Rouan, and was one of the co-founders of the Support/Surface movement.
Alongside his work as a painter, he has been involved in a number of audiovisual projects since 1960. He began his work as a film-maker with a series of portraits of artists (Bram Van Velde, Sonia Delaunay, Alberto Burri, etc.), making 13 short films on art. His documentary films, which have already won 7 dâOr awards, were awarded the Grand Prix National de la CrĂŠation Audiovisuelle in 1992 and the Grand Prix de la SCAM in 2010.

Orange County Native Gwen Stefani Goes Back To Her Roots
By Allison Mitchell | April 17, 2024 | People Lifestyle Style & Beauty Feature Features Celebrity Art Style Style & Beauty Feature Culture Featured Lifestyle Feature Style & Beauty Culture Feature Awards Events Women of Influence Latest Entertainment People Feature Music style and beauty The Latest
Whether you know Gwen Stefani as the rock goddess fronting the legendary band No Doubtâwho reunited in April for the first time in nine years at Coachellaâor as the red-lipped solo artist mentoring others as a judge on NBCâs The Voice, there is no doubt Stefani has made her mark in the music world and beyond. In spring 2022, she launched GXVE Beauty exclusively at Sephora, and the year prior, she tied the knot with fellow Voice coach Blake Shelton, with whom sheâs collaborated on numerous hit country songs. But despite her soaring successâsee her three GrammysâStefani is still just a girl from Anaheim, the hometown sheâs never stopped professing her love for and the birthplace of the band that started it all. Here, as Stefani prepares to headline the 15th anniversary CHOC Gala at the City National Grove of Anaheim, the multitalented artist is discussing her Orange County roots and why giving back is essential to her lifeâs mission.
Weâre excited to see you perform at the CHOC Gala on May 18. Why does CHOCâs mission resonate with you? My heart has always been drawn to CHOC, and through the years, Iâve been blessed to work with them. They do incredible work providing care and support to children and families, ensuring children have access to the best care and resources regardless of their circumstances. CHOC has always been close to my heart, and I feel so grateful to be able to continue to support them.
This year, you were part of the inaugural class of inductees in the new Orange County Hall of Fame. What does the honor mean to you? Itâs one of those things that is bigger than a dream, as I never knew it was a possibility. Orange County is where my dreams were born and nurtured, and it has shaped my life. Orange County really built me as a person and defined me as somebody who felt pride in our city and in the different neighborhoods. Anaheim is my roots; itâs always been with me. Iâve been able to share it with the world through my songs and through my style, and Iâve always had so much pride and gratitude for where Iâve come from.
No Doubt got its start in Anaheim in the mid-1980s. How have your O.C. roots influenced you in No Doubt and your solo career? Growing up in Orange County has had a profound impact on my life and career. My O.C. roots have shaped my identity and my artistry in countless ways. It influenced us because of the lifestyle we had in the O.C. We turned to music to fill our days, and it was what we did in our lives.
Why was now the right time to return to the stage with your No Doubt bandmates, Tom Dumont, Tony Kanal and Adrian Young? I think it was something that was always going to happen as if it was always meant to be in 2024. It came together fast, and we all just thought, âThis feels right, letâs do it.â
Tragic Kingdom will turn 30 in 2025âwhat are the tracks that you still canât get enough of when it comes to performing live? Performing live feels incredible, especially when youâre playing songs that have reached so many people, like those from Tragic Kingdom. Itâs unbelievably hard to digest it, doing songs like âDonât Speakâ and âJust a Girl.â When I wrote âJust a Girl,â it came from a place of simplicity and innocence, expressing my truth at the time, never thinking anyone would hear it and never imagining it would have such enduring relevance. I used to wonder if I would outgrow the song, but it still feels like itâs lyrically relevant today. Itâs amazing to see how the songs from this album continue to connect after all these years.
What are your earliest memories of falling in love with music in O.C.? My very first memories are of going to bluegrass festivals with my parents. My parents were big music lovers. Even at my grandparentsâ house, I listened to The Andrews Sisters and was introduced to The Sound of Music and Annie soundtracks. I can remember listening to Shaun Cassidy in third grade, and from there, my older brother brought home a Madness record, which was underground music that wasnât popular. Once we found that, we thought doing this type of music was what was going to sort of define us. It was that age when you were trying to find yourself and trying to find an identity, and we identified with this fun, quirky music from London. We felt like we discovered something we could wrap our arms around and make our own. We were kids and this inspired us to be in a band.
Can we expect new music? Yes, of course! Iâve been working on new music for a while. The longer you do this, you realize that itâs not so much about the end game; itâs really about the process. Being in the studio, creating music, is therapeutic, and it feels like Iâm living my purpose. Itâs starting to get to the point where I can see the finish line of this chapter and at the point where Iâm ready to share it. Then, I want to move on to more music.
Who are you currently listening to? Lately, Iâve been listening to Linda Ronstadt. I love to listen to â70s soft rock playlists, as well as songs from my childhood. I guess they call it yacht rock.
Youâre also a successful fashion designer, and 2022 marked the launch of your cosmetics line. What products are staples for you from GXVE? I love every GXVE Beauty product, but I really love our mascara. Itâs super volumizing, and the formula doesnât flake or smudge. My latest launches are our Dewyplump Collagen Lip Gels and Cheek Tints, which I debuted at Coachella. I spent a lot of time developing these products to make sure they could perform in any setting, from the stage to everyday life. The Dewyplump Collagen Lip Gels and Cheek Tints have beautifully buildable pigments that pair really well with lipsticks and powder blushes; [theyâre] melty and hydrating without feeling sticky.
You continue to elevate the fashion gameâif you could swap closets with anyone, who would it be? Rihanna. At each point in her life, including becoming a mother and throughout her career, she always has incredible style that reflects both her and her artistry.
Youâve lived many lives in your career. When did you first feel like you âmade itâ? There was a particular show where I was performing with a band member, Alan Meade. We usually sang harmonies together, but on that night, he couldnât make it to the show. So, I ended up performing solo. It was just me. I remember feeling an inner sense of ease onstage that night. It felt so right, so easy, as if I had discovered my gift. Even though I hadnât achieved commercial success yet, that night made me feel like I had found myself and what I was good at. I will never forget walking into the parking lot after the show and feeling [like], âThis is me.â
