My heart was breaking, hands are shaking, bugs are crawling all over me / My heart was breaking, hands are shaking, bugs are crawling all over me / My heart was breaking, hands are shaking, bugs are crawling all over me / My heart was breaking, hands are shaking, bugs are crawling all over me
Son of a bitch / Give me a drink / One more night / This can't be me / Son of a bitch / If I can't get clean / I'm gonna drink my life away

Song Review: Margo Price - “Stranger in a Strange Land”
Margo Price managed to retain Leon Russell’s spirit while making “Stranger in a Strange Land” sound like a Margo Price song.
Her cover is the lead single announcing the Aug. 25 release of A Song For Leon: A Tribute to Leon Russell, which includes contributions from Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats, Orville Peck, Pixies, Monica Martin, Hiss Golden Messenger and others.
In strong voice and with a slight echo effect in place, Price is backed with a choir and ensemble that sounds uncannily like Tedeschi Trucks Band. Her “Stranger” hits its apex on the long coda as she riffs at the mic and the band vamps.
There’s got to be a better way/a better way/a better way, she sings as it builds.
Hot stuff, this is.

Not Giving Up
The year was 2016 and I had just moved to Northern Ireland for some temporary work and going there felt like a new and exciting adventure. It certainly did give me that, and if I had been in a better frame of mind during my time there, I would have gotten so much more out of the experience. When I arrived off the boat at Belfast, it took me three buses to get to my final destination – but I…

Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats - South Of Here
I’ve got a soft spot for music that sounds like it’s made in another decade, especially soul, R&B, and rock music. I don’t want to say I’m an “old soul,” but I enjoy a lot of older music, although there are tons of new bands that move music forward in some way. I love a lot of that stuff, too, but there’s something about bands and artists that harken back to the past that get me. One of those acts is Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats, who have been known to perform a 60s and 70s influenced version of R&B, soul, and rock and roll. These guys really okay the part, too, as they’re signed to legendary label Stax Records. I really loved their debut album, 2015’s self-titled, but their later albums have had diminishing returns. I haven’t really been into their last few albums, despite enjoying Nathaniel Rateliff as a singer.
I wasn’t really looking forward to their new album, South Of Here, but that was because I just had no expectations, and I was pleasantly surprised with this. I wouldn’t say this is the best album of the year, or among them, but I still had a good time with it. This is the most versatile and diverse the band has ever been, including styles that the band has incorporated over the last decade, such as folk, blues, southern-rock, soul, and R&B, and we hear a lot of that throughout this album. It’s also a brisk 37 minutes, but its short length is kind of a problem, albeit not in an outward sense. None of the music is bad, but this album is really messy, since it never stays in the same style for long. It’s a diverse album, but its diversity is a bit much for a 37-minute album, although it’s still good.
I could excuse that diversity if every track was really strong, but that’s the other thing, only a handful of tracks are truly great. This album is really good, but I wouldn’t call it great. It’s got a few songs I really love, but a handful of songs that are just kind of okay, and I don’t find myself got back to it as much as other stuff lately. When I do go back to it, I have a good time, but I also kind of forget it as soon as it’s over with. I still enjoyed it, and I still enjoy it, but it’s got some issues that prevent me from really loving it. I’d still recommend this, though, as it’s got some great songs, and it’s the most diverse and versatile the band has ever sounded. Rateliff sounds great, too, but this is a solid album, even if it’s not one of my top albums of the year.

Bob Weir Sits in with Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats; Lessons are Learned and Confirmed
Bob Weir recently joined Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats on stage to play some tunes and have some fun. So much fun was had, the musicians released professional video of the collaborations.
Besides confirming Weir - who also plays with Dead & Company and Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros - is partial to bands with ampersands in their names, the sit-ins, which included “Me and My Uncle,” “Slow Train Coming” and “The Other One,” imparted and confirmed some facts.
youtube
To wit:
* Weir’s style of lead guitar is weirder than his weird style of rhythm guitar.
* Rateliff is a master of imitating Christian-period Bob Dylan.
* Weir doesn’t know the words to “Slow Train.”
* The Night Sweats are not good background vocalists.
* Horns belong in “The Other One.”
* So do backgrounds; even bad ones would be better than Weir singing it alone.
Class is dismissed.
