Six Feet Under is a good show.

@starkissedscars requested a starter for Ethan from Nathaniel.
Cursing under his breath as he caught sight of his cousin walking into the grocery store, Nate quickly ducked into the closest aisle and began booking it towards the other end of the racks to hide. If Ethan was there, Conrad and Jeremiah likely weren’t far behind - and the eldest Fisher was in no mood to deal with his half-brothers.
His reasons for being at Cousins Beach had nothing to do with them and the drama their complicated family dynamics would bring. He was only there because Autumn was, and the last thing either of them needed at the moment was more grief when they were already in mourning. It was why he had planned to avoid them all, but it seemed the universe had other plans. (Or maybe he’d just picked a terrible hiding place.) “Hey Ethan.”

“You’re really lucky, y’know that?”
“…You kidding? It was over in a second, I didn’t have to be afraid of it, I didn’t even have to think about it.”
“No more bullshit.”
“No more responsibility.”
“No more having-to-care.”
“No more BOREDOM!”
-Six Feet Under S1E01: “Pilot” (2001) d. Alan Ball.

Introducing Nathaniel "Nate" Fisher, from The Summer I Turned Pretty universe. He's the estranged older brother of Conrad and Jeremiah from their father's first marriage and just recently lost his best friend, which is what's brought him to Cousins Beach.

"There’s always sadness in our lives. It’s that sad feeling that keeps us going." (Otter @ Nate)
@ofblackskies
Nate was no stranger to sorrow. Even as a child, he had noticed the way his mother’s ever present light seemed to dim for days after dealing with his father. Adam Fisher was a fountain of bad choices, and it had given Nathaniel no end of grief growing up to know he had half-brothers that might as well have been strangers. But the sting had never felt quite so bad as it did now, watching Conrad be deliberately cruel to the two of them after an accidental run-in without Elliot’s grounding presence at his back.
“That may be true, Ott, but it doesn’t give him the right to be a dick about it. He’s not the only one hurting right now,” he muttered, still looking stricken as his younger brother stomped off. The news of Susannah’s illness was an unpleasant surprise. Especially so soon after losing his best friend, and Nate sank heavily down in his chair before passing Autumn her ice cream. His own sat untouched in his hand, but he didn’t even seem to notice as it began to melt and drip down his hand. He was still staring in the direction Conrad had vanished with a troubled expression, his pride warring with his compassion.

Nathaniel hadn’t come to Cousins to share sob stories with a girl he’d just met. Nor would he ever ask anyone to share theirs, as the blond wasn’t particularly inclined to share more than the Cliff Notes version of his own. His father’s messy love life and penchant for cheating wasn’t what defined Nate as a person, however much it influenced his relationships with his half-brothers. He wasn’t even all that upset about it now. As a child it had been devastating to learn about. As an adult, it was just disgusting to think about. No one wanted to be confronted by the full extent of what a terrible person their father was the way Nate had been, but the eldest Fisher had a sinking feeling at least one of his younger brothers - if not both - was dealing with exactly that. Why else would Susannah have invited him?
“I guess you could say that. I’m sure you’ve noticed by the look of us that my father definitely has a type,” he joked. For being half-siblings, the resemblance between he and his brothers was uncanny. “My brothers too, apparently.” Crinkling his nose at the thought of risking his relationship with them for a girl, he shook his head. “Look, Belly may be a saint for all I know. But do you know what indecisive is really another word for? Young.”
“And I’m not into jailbait. I’m twenty-one, and she’s what? Like, sixteen? No thanks. Our old man has already done enough to sabotage our relationships without adding a girl to the mix,” he quipped, confirming her suspicions. “But no. I’m not here for the food. A close friend of mine and I needed to, uh, get away from home for a bit, and her family has a house here.”
𝑨𝒉, 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒕𝒂𝒍𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑨𝒔𝒔𝒉𝒐𝒍𝒆 𝑭𝒂𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓, Audrey knows that story personally as her father is not winning any awards for his contributions to her childhood, let alone sporting any #1 Dad mugs in the office gifted to him by her over the years. But that's a story, a novel in and of itself. One it took her a long time to confess to Conrad and Jeremiah, and to spill it to a Fisher she just met? She doesn't see that as being on the agenda tonight. ❝ The original, huh? The blue print? ❞ she asks, teasing a bit as she takes his hand and she shakes it but she has to stop and laugh as he says she gave him the worst mental image. ❝ She's not that bad ... she's just... I guess undecisive is the word. ❞ she shakes her head a bit as she looks to the water.
❝ I take it you , Con, and Jere are not that close, because they never mentioned you that I know of. ❞ and she isn't saying that to be mean, it's just the fact that she's never heard of him before now. She may prod the boys about that later knowing that Jere might be more forthcoming than Conrad about such things.
❝ So what brought you to Cousins? Can't just be the barbeque.❞

“Thanks,” Nathaniel murmured, his tone almost cautious. It’s probably the millionth time someone has offered him that particular platitude, but hearing it from Conrad made his chest ache. Was losing his brother in all but blood the price to be paid for gaining a relationship with his younger half brothers? Nate certainly hoped not. The universe couldn’t be that cruel. It had already stuck him with the world’s shittiest father. “I…”
“I don’t actually know what to say,” the blond confessed with an awkward little laugh. “I guess I always thought this would go differently, you know? That maybe I could reach out after you guys graduated from college and weren’t dependent on him anymore.” So that he wouldn’t have to see Adam went unsaid, but he had a feeling Conrad would understand.
“But this is…awkward as hell, if I’m being honest.” The eldest Fisher laughed. “I may not know what to talk about, but I know I definitely don’t want to talk about him. Let’s start over, shall we?” Offering Conrad a hand, Nate shot him a tired smile. “Hi. I’m Nathaniel Fisher, but everyone calls me Nate.”
𝑯𝒆 𝒍𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒏𝒔, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒏 𝒉𝒆 𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒔 𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒉𝒆𝒂𝒅. Losing someone isn't easy, Conrad understands that all too well. ❝ I'm sorry for your loss.❞ he says, offering his sympathies even if his brother doesn't want them. He wouldn't blame him if he didn't - Conrad had been anything except welcoming in finding out he had another brother. It had nothing, truly, to do with Nate.
Just everything to do with his father ; his father who didn't understand what 'faithful' meant. Leaving a sour taste in his mouth toward just about everyone even those who didn't deserve it.
❝ I never thought you were here to ruin my summer. ❞ Conrad says, shaking his head. But he has to agree, their father ... he sucks.
❝ You're right, I don't know you. You don't know us. I don't hate you.❞ there is a deep breath sucked in and slowly released. ❝ Just knowing that he has done this over and over ... ❞ and knowing he saw the pain in his mother's face - he can only imagine how Nate's mother felt.
