Cursing under his breath as he caught sight of his cousin walking into the grocery store, Nate quickly ducked into the closest aisle and began booking it towards the other end of the racks to hide. If Ethan was there, Conrad and Jeremiah likely weren’t far behind - and the eldest Fisher was in no mood to deal with his half-brothers.

His reasons for being at Cousins Beach had nothing to do with them and the drama their complicated family dynamics would bring. He was only there because Autumn was, and the last thing either of them needed at the moment was more grief when they were already in mourning. An involuntary smile spread across his face at Audrey’s admission. “That’s probably for the best. It’s still a touchy subject for them,” the eldest Fisher warned her. “Whereas I’m at the point in my life where it’s just funny. They treat me like I’m the one that ruins their perfect little family, but they technically ruined mine,” Nate pointed out with no small amount of amusement.

“Not that I blame them for that. That’s all on our dear old dad, but it is part of the reason I call them young. Growing up is realizing blame belongs to the guilty party. Not the victims. And my brothers aren’t there yet, as much as I wish they would hurry up and get there already,” the blond admitted with a tired sigh.

“Loving people that loathe you is exhausting. It’s why I don’t come around much now that I’m an adult, even though Dad doesn’t have a say in when I visit anymore. I wouldn’t even be here, if not for...” Realizing he’d said too much, Nathaniel shook his head and turned his attention back to the horizon for a moment. “I guess it goes without saying we both just found Cousins better than the alternative, eh?”

❝ See, I wasn't going to say anything. ❞ Audrey laughs, though when she mentions the brothers she shrugs her shoulders to that. What can be said there? Jeremiah is her best friend and she adores him and as for Conrad well, it's just safe to say he's got his own Spotify playlist on her account mixed with both songs about having a crush and how much she hates him at the same time. What's on that playlist? The world may never know.

Nate was no stranger to sorrow. Even as a child, he had noticed the way his mother’s ever present light seemed to dim for days after dealing with his father. Adam Fisher was a fountain of bad choices, and it had given Nathaniel no end of grief growing up to know he had half-brothers that might as well have been strangers. But the sting had never felt quite so bad as it did now, watching Conrad be deliberately cruel to the two of them after an accidental run-in without Elliot’s grounding presence at his back.

“That may be true, Ott, but it doesn’t give him the right to be a dick about it. He’s not the only one hurting right now,” he muttered, still looking stricken as his younger brother stomped off. The news of Susannah’s illness was an unpleasant surprise. Especially so soon after losing his best friend, and Nate sank heavily down in his chair before passing Autumn her ice cream. His own sat untouched in his hand, but he didn’t even seem to notice as it began to melt and drip down his hand. He was still staring in the direction Conrad had vanished with a troubled expression, his pride warring with his compassion.

Thanks to an economic boom in the early 20th century, Detroit is blessed with incredible Art Deco masterpiece

The Fisher Building is a skyscraper located at 3011 West Grand Avenue, Detroit, Michigan, United States. The building rises to a height of 135.47 meters and has 30 floors. It was designed by architect Joseph Nathaniel French in the Art Deco style and built between 1927-1928. The building has national historic building status since June 29, 1989.

Nathaniel may have had a complicated relationship with his father as a human being, but at the end of the day Adam was still his father. The eldest Fisher wasn’t looking to start a war with him in the wake of his second wife’s death. Even if he didn’t necessarily always like him, Nate had been raised better than to kick a man when he was down. Or to drag his grieving half-siblings into a family feud - especially in the wake of having just lost their mother. So Conrad’s accusation? It hurt him more than he cared to admit.

“I’m not here for him,” Nate finally confessed once Adam was out of earshot. “We both know he’s not worth the energy, man,” the blond sighed as he helped his younger sibling get the bags out of the trunk. “I’m here because loss sucks. My best friend since birth, he…uh…he’s gone now. And I get that that’s not the same thing as your mom, but…I get it, okay?”

Shaking his head, Nate blew out a breath. “I get it,” he repeated. “And I wasn’t going to leave you two alone to go through that with only him for company.” Part of him wanted to hug Conrad, because lord knew he looked like he needed one. But his brother wouldn’t welcome it from him, and so he settled for gently nudging their shoulders together. “I came for you two. So maybe don’t stay out of my way this time, okay? We’ve already spent our entire lives doing that because of him, and it’s dumb.”

Conrad could feel the tension between them even before Nate stepped out of the car, and he was already over it. His jaw clenched as their eyes met — it had been who knows how long since they’d last seen each other, but that didn’t matter now; Nate was here regardless. Since Conrad's mom passed, he’d worked hard to keep the peace, mostly for Jeremiah and maybe a bit for himself. But now, with his dad’s sudden attempt to act like he cared and the strained dynamics with Nate, everything was becoming harder to manage. The last thing he needed was another argument, but with Nate back, old wounds were returning and Conrad felt like he was about to explode.

As much as Conrad wanted just to slam the door in Nate's face and leave, Conrad knew that wasn’t really an option. Not with his mom gone. And even if she was still here by some miracle, he knew she wouldn't have approved that either. She’d been the only one who ever managed to attempt to keep them together despite all the messiness their father built. It wasn’t fair that Nate had just shown up like this. But Conrad also understood what loss felt like. Maybe they hadn’t shared much growing up, but there was no denying what they had in common: a pos father. "Look, if you're here to start something with Dad," Conrad said quietly, "I can't do that with you right now."

He didn’t say it to be harsh. Conrad honestly didn't have any energy left. Many days, he just wanted to be confined to his room, sleeping and pretending she was still here. "I can grab a bag, and we can just go inside." Nothing was really alright and no one could pretend otherwise. However, his mom would want him to keep the peace, even if she wasn’t there to make it happen. And for her, he’d keep trying. " Nobody is here right now; it's just me." The words fell from his lips in a pained voice.

After a long silence, Conrad exhaled and realized there wasn’t much left to say. He wasn’t here to fix anything. Awkwardly, he rubbed the tip of his nose in an attempt to ignore all of this. The only thing keeping him here was the chance to make things bearable. As Conrad grabbed a bag and began walking inside, another sigh slid from his lips. "Just let me know if you need anything while you’re here. Otherwise, I’ll stay out of your way." It was the best he could do.

“Thanks,” Nathaniel murmured, his tone almost cautious. It’s probably the millionth time someone has offered him that particular platitude, but hearing it from Conrad made his chest ache. Was losing his brother in all but blood the price to be paid for gaining a relationship with his younger half brothers? Nate certainly hoped not. The universe couldn’t be that cruel. It had already stuck him with the world’s shittiest father. “I…”

“I don’t actually know what to say,” the blond confessed with an awkward little laugh. “I guess I always thought this would go differently, you know? That maybe I could reach out after you guys graduated from college and weren’t dependent on him anymore.” So that he wouldn’t have to see Adam went unsaid, but he had a feeling Conrad would understand.

“But this is…awkward as hell, if I’m being honest.” The eldest Fisher laughed. “I may not know what to talk about, but I know I definitely don’t want to talk about him. Let’s start over, shall we?” Offering Conrad a hand, Nate shot him a tired smile. “Hi. I’m Nathaniel Fisher, but everyone calls me Nate.”

He wouldn't blame him if he didn't - Conrad had been anything except welcoming in finding out he had another brother. It had nothing, truly, to do with Nate.

Just everything to do with his father ; his father who didn't understand what 'faithful' meant. Leaving a sour taste in his mouth toward just about everyone even those who didn't deserve it.

What did masters do back then to slaves that was *too much* even for a slave?I knew some used them as stools to reach their horses and to do lots of humiliating tasks but can you state some?

Also,my story is set on a fantasy medieval setting,where magic resides.

Would it be plausible for said slave in my story to acquire great affinity with magic and overthow the household he works in(aka killing everyone of them)? And would it hold any general consequences?will the emperor have to send someone to bring him down or something?
