Hey guys! So, one of the things I want to do with the blog is talk about the books I’ve read over the past month.  Not only will it keep me reading, but maybe someone will find a new book to check out!  I’m going to try to do these regularly, posting on the last Sunday of the month.  

January Reads: 

Title: House in the Cerulean Sea Author: TJ Klune Genre: Fiction; Fantasy

Goodreads Summary:  A magical island. A dangerous task. A burning secret. Linus Baker leads a quiet, solitary life. At forty, he lives in a tiny house with a devious cat and his old records. As a Case Worker at the Department in Charge Of Magical Youth, he spends his days overseeing the well-being of children in government-sanctioned orphanages. My Review: 

Upon this being a rec from the company I work for, several of my coworkers kept recommending it to me.  I ended up reading it in three days.  

This is an incredibly beautiful book. While uniquely its own, there are shades of Harry Potter, X-Men, and Umbrella Academy among other things. It kind of sits on a line of between reality and fantasy, and is less of a plot driven novel, and more of a character study on letting go of what's considered normal, and embracing the strange person you are on the inside; as well as being a novel about finding a family, and finding the good in people no matter who they are. It's a quick read (read it in three days!), but its simplicity is a fault. It's positivity is one of its touchstones, and I appreciate that a book can be moving and not rely on tired darker or grittier tropes. It's also a good read for all ages, and a book parents could read with their kids.

What is worth the sacrifice? How do you do all the good you can do? And, most importantly, how will history remember you?

My Review: 

This is a sweet, light-hearted LGBT romance -- an easy read if you're looking for something to escape into for a few days. It's a bit on the tropey side, but that's where the fun is, and the characters are engaging and fun to spend time with.  If you’re a big fan of fanfiction, this has all the trappings of really good fanfiction (though I’ll admit, maybe cause it’s published fiction, it’s not going to be as explicit as a lot of fanfiction usually gets).  

 My only real criticism is the number of pop culture references and celebrity name drops go a little overboard. Sometimes they feel shoehorned in to make it seem more 'now', which is just going to end up dating the book in the long run. Also, the American political stuff feels a little idealistic, especially after the tumultuous election we’ve had, but that’s not really the heart of the book.   

Otherwise, while it's not going to win a Nobel Prize for literature, it's still a lot of fun.

The only real clue was a mocking riddle listing methods of murder, signed with the frightening pseudonym “Truly, Devious.” It became one of the great unsolved crimes of American history. True-crime aficionado Stevie Bell is set to begin her first year at Ellingham Academy, and she has an ambitious plan: She will solve this cold case. That is, she will solve the case when she gets a grip on her demanding new school life and her housemates: the inventor, the novelist, the actor, the artist, and the jokester. But something strange is happening. Truly Devious makes a surprise return, and death revisits Ellingham Academy. The past has crawled out of its grave. Someone has gotten away with murder. The two interwoven mysteries of this first book in the Truly Devious series dovetail brilliantly, and Stevie Bell will continue her relentless quest for the murderers in books two and three.

My Review: 

Truly Devious:   I love the mystery aspect of it -- it's definitely intriguing, and as someone who's read a lot of mystery novels, I'm glad the mystery in this isn't glaringly obvious. It did, at times, feel like a ton of set-up, but because this is the first book of a trilogy, that does make sense. The teen angst/drama aspect felt a little much at times, and I wish there was more of some of the side-characters who only seem to pop up when the plot needs them, but this is minor nitpicking and overall, this book was an incredibly fun read.

The Vanishing Stair:  The mystery is still incredibly intriguing as it unfolds in more detail in this one, and Johnson's ability to unwind what's going on is fantastic. I still have a few minor quibbles -- I think this one starts out slower, since it's saddled with recapping the first book, and there are times when I feel it's a little padded (I'm not sure this needed to be stretched into three books, but trilogies, I'm sure, make more money), but I don't think that detracts too much from the overall story. I do, also, wish that some of the side characters (Janelle, Nate) had more to do, at times they kind of feel like window dressing, and there because Stevie's world needs more people in it. But overall, it's still a fun read, and an intriguing mystery.

The Hand on the Wall:  Better than the second one, doesn't quite capture the magic and mystery of the first. Overall, this trilogy was a fun little mystery with a lot of cool (albeit sometimes underdeveloped) characters. I still think it should have been one, larger novel, as this one, too, feels like there's a lot of padding. And I have a few smaller issues with how certain things were resolved (a lot of conclusions felt like leaps to get there for the characters, even if overall the 'mystery' made sense), while some things I wanted more closure on (what happened to Francis? they alluded to her in book 2, but never closed the door on it). I'm also not a fan of the romance in this book -- it never really clicked for me, and often felt like it was there to keep the plot going. But these are all pretty easy reads, and there are a lot of fun things, too. I'm curious as to how the author handles these characters in her next stand alone novel.

Today was the day for Nate’s press conference for his upcoming fight with Jorge. “But you stay close to the rest okay? I don’t want them to get close to you, mama’s.” Nate wasn’t happy that I was tagging along with him, he called it stupid. “I will, don’t worry about me.” I said as I gave him a peck on his left cheek. “I always worry about you, these guys are nuts y/n.” He stretched his arms and walked over to the others. “But you’re crazy too mr Diaz.” I teased him as I followed him to the group.

Chris was a bit nervous as both of the group came together for the press conference. “I don’t trust them.” He said under his breath as the arrived at the scene. “Me neither, he’s a bitch.” Killshot said. I looked over at Nate, who was already watching me. “Nick, take her with you to our seats.” He said while his eyes never left me. “Sure, come on y/n, it’s about to start.” Nick nudge my arm and guided us to our seats. “Here you go.” He pointed at the seats and we all sat down, ready for them to start.

Nate POV

The whole press release was bullshit, he kept on yapping about bull crap so I had enough. Chris stayed to promote his fight as I walked off stage. “Someone get her out of there.” I was looking at the crowd, people were getting nervous, ready to throw some hands. “Yeah…I get her.” One of the members walked off and yelling starts on the stage. People all got up from their seat, yelling as well. “If she gets hurt, I fucking kill him.” I mumbled under my breath as Chris walked off the stage. “We need to leave man, a brawl will happen if we don’t.” I nodded, knowing y/n was with the other. “Let’s go back to the trucks and wait there.”

Y/N POV

It happened all so fast, a fight broke out right next to the stage. People all jumped up and started to yell. “Get behind me.” Nick said as another team member showed up. “The fuck!” He yelled at Jorge team, Jorge saw us and tried to walk over. “Y/n stay out of this.” He pushed me behind him as well as they start to move forward, trying to hit Jorge. I was looking around, being aware of my surroundings, trying to find an escape. “Bitch!” Nick and Jorge start to fight, hitting each other hard as Jorge dragged Nick down with his dreads. As that happens I got pushed down by someone from Jorge’s team, trying to hit some else close to me. “Ouch!” A elbow hit my head and I immediately covered up my face. “Hey! That’s Nate’s girl! Stop!” A journalist yells as he tries to push those people away. “Come!” He wrapped his arm over my shoulder and pushed me through the fighting crowd.

I was on the other side of the parking lot, the guy checked my small wound/cut above my eyebrow. “This will sting, I’m sorry.” I nodded and he carefully cleaned out the cut. “It looks clean, you don’t need to see a doctor but you need to take care of it.” He placed a plaster on it and smiled at me. “Thank you.” He nodded and helped me up again as I was sitting in the back of his trunk. “No problem, can’t watch how these idiots injure a lady, especially not Nate’s girl.” I brushed off my jacket and took out my phone. “Thank you, care to wait till they pick me up?” I asked as I quickly texted Chris where I was. “Sure, they won’t hurt me right?” I laughed and shook my head. “Nahh , I don’t think so.”

Nate POV

I was furious as Nick and the other came back without y/n. “What do you mean she was just gone?!” Nick shrugged his shoulders. “I got my ass beaten by that fuck, when it was done she was gone.” Chris was looking down at his phone, totally ignoring us. “She’s safe, I know where she is.” He said as he tucked away his phone. “Let’s go get her then.” I was angry, angry at them and at myself. “If she’s hurt….man you better run.”

I saw her waiting at somebody’s truck, looking at the guys camera. “Nice photos, you took them while they were fighting?” The guys nods proudly, showing her some more photos. “Well the camera man never gets hurt.” She joked lightly. “Y/n.” Chris said as we walked closer to her. She looks up and jumps down from the trunk. “Hello guys.” She immediately walked over to me, wrapping her arms around me. “You okay?” I whispered in her ear. “Just one scratch above my eyebrow.” I took a look at her face and saw a plaster, right above her right eyebrow. “I’m okay, he helped me to get out.” She pointed at the guy. “Thanks.” He nodded and pointed at her. “She has one scratch but keep an eye on her, she got trapped between two guys, probably hit her more than once.” I nodded and gave the guy a hand. “I will, thank you.”

Y/n POV

Nate was angry, angry at Nick and angry on himself. “Sorry.” I mumbled against his shoulder as we were going back to the hotel. He was holding me, traveling his hand down over my arm. “I’m not angry at you, mama’s” he placed a soft kiss on my head and looked back out of the window, probably beating himself up that this happened to me. “I’m okay, I got out before the real damage was done.” I laid my head against his chest and smiled at him, he sighs and closed his eyes.

Nate was talking to a guy who was filming him and asking some questions about the press conference as team Jorge joined us in the hallway. Nate started to yell at them, causing the rest to join him. I was done for today, the adrenaline rush was gone, pain started to come up. “Let’s go over there.” He said as he tried to marched his way over. Chris was following him closely as he was yelling as well. Hotel security walked up and held them off. “Don’t, go to your rooms guys.” Nate was yelling again and walked back to me. “Motherfuckers.” I had enough, done with the loud noise. “I’m going to our room if you don’t mind.” He wrapped his arm around my shoulder and pulled me close. “I’m coming with ya, don’t trust these motherfuckers.”

Nate POV

She was lying in bed, wearing a shirt of mine. “You okay? Need some painkillers?” She slowly shook her head. “No…I’m okay.” She nestled herself in the bedsheets and closed her eyes. “You sure mama’s?” I carefully checked on her, touching her forehead slightly to feel is she heating up or not. “Yeah…just tired.” I nodded and went to take a shower to reflect on what happened today.

She was asleep when I joined her, looking soft and peaceful. “I’m sorry that Nick is an idiot, he was to suppose to keep you safe…” I whispered to her as I carefully wrapped my arms around her, spoofing her from behind. “I’m okay Diaz.” Her sleepy tiredly voice answered me back. “I know….I just want to keep you safe.” She tiredly turned around and laid her head down on my chest, while wrapping her legs around mine. “You already do that.” She had a lazy smile on her face, her eyes closed as she nuzzled her head against my chest. “I love ya.” “I love you too Diaz.” She fell asleep in a few minutes, leaving me awake for a few hours, thinking about us and how stupid Nick was for not keeping her safe.

"Nate, can you please clean up your shit". You yell from the bathroom, his clothes were slung everywhere but the clothes basket where they're supposed to be. "I dont understand why you cant go three inches to the left and put them in the basket". You grumble.

"What's going on"? Nate yawned as he leaned on the door frame.

"Clothes! They go here not on the floor or on the sink. Here". You pick up the basket and shove it to him.

"Alright. Calm down. It's just clothes". Nate scoffed as he leaned down to pick them up.

"Nick, I've had". The look on Nates face made you clamp your hand over your mouth. Whoops.

"What did you just fucking call me"? Nate growled, dropping his clothes back on the floor.

"I'm sorry. It just slipped. Nick and I use to argue all the time. I guess it just brought back memories. I'm so sorry, Nathan".

"You just called me your ex's name that happens to be my brother. Maybe it was a bad idea for us to get together". Nate huffed and left the room.

How could you let yourself slip? You and Nick only went out for a short period and you mean short, you broke up and thought it was just better as friends. But you and Nate were different, you've been together for two and a half years. You loved Nate more than anything. He was the one you wanted to spend the rest of your life with. But this slip up could cost you everything.

"Nate"? You whispered as you came into the bedroom. Nate was sitting on the edge of the bed, playing with his hat.

"Yeah"? Nate cleared his throat.

"I'm really sorry. It'll never happen again. I promise. Can you forgive me"? You wiped away a tear as you got on your knees in front of him. Your hands rested on his knees.

"I know you didnt mean it. Slip ups happen. I just, I wish that I would've gotten the chance to meet you before my brother did. Cause I dont want to second to him". Nate wiped his nose.

"Second? Nate, you are my first everything. There are no seconds or thirds. Just you, no one else matters. Cause if that was the case I would be fiftieth on Nick's list and what hundredth on yours"? You laugh jokingly.

"Nah, you're my first. I'm sorry too. I shouldn't make a big deal out of it. I know you're with me and you and Nick are just friends. But I feel like maybe you still love him if he's still in your memory".

"Babe, the only memory that was brought up was him and I arguing. That says a lot about our short lived romance. What you and I have is real. I love you and I would do anything to make you see that".

"I love you too, what happened when you two argued"?

"I left and he cleaned. I guess he figured it would make me better".

"We're going to be different. After every fight, argument or disagreement. No one leaves mad, we solve it and make up. Alright? I dont want to stay mad at each other".

"Sounds good to me. Now since we had our argument and we solved it now how do we make up"? You crossed your arms over Nates knees and laid your chin down, looking up at him.

"I got an idea". He grabbed your face and smashed his lips to yours.

"I like this kind of making up". You mumbled against his lips as you stood up. You straddled his lap and wrapped your arms around his neck, never breaking the kiss.

Nates hands settled on your hips, guiding then as you grinded on his lap.

You pushed Nate back onto the bed and raked your fingernails down his clothed chest. "This needs to go". You pushed up his shirt, over his arms and threw it somewhere in the room. You kissed down his chest and playfully bit his nipple with a giggle.

Nate slapped your clothed ass, making you squeal and continue down his chest, leaving butterfly kissed to his warm skin.

Getting up from his lap you stood between his legs and un buckled his belt, unzipped his pants and snaked your hand down his underwear.

"Someone else is loving this making up too". You moan, pulling him from his underwear.

"Fuck". Nate grunted, as your mouth engulfed his tip, your tongue swirling around the very tip.

Your head bobbed up and down as you took him down your throat inch by inch. Your hand working his shaft.

"So fucking sexy". Nate bit his lip as he looked down at you. He loved when you sucked him off, you on your knees made him weak in his.
