You bit your lip as he began to ramble about the process of hypnosis, in truth you were.. very interested in hypnosis. Not exactly in the fun, silly way, but in the way that made you feel excited down there.

Natsume's rambling came to a slow halt as he observed how quiet you had been and briefly examined your form. Natsume is confident, however, that he knew you well enough to omit that part given that the two of you had been together for some time and had even explored your sexuality numerous times. 

He gave you some time to unwind before suggesting you go into a trance. Your body relaxed even more in this situation than it had before, and when he realized this, a little grin spread across his face.

Anyone else go absolutely feral at shows of deeply personal devotion that are meant to last through time? I swear to god I lose it so much.

Like when that one immortal character continues to hold onto the one personal scrap from their mortal friend/lover, knowing they’ll never meet again. Or when one is asked to wait and so the other does patiently knowing the one who asked will probably never come. Or maybe it’s changing the way thing are because of the injustice a beloved suffered when they aren’t there to see it happen anymore.

It doesn’t even have to be romantic! I almost like it more when it isn’t!! Like the relationships between youkai and humans in Nataume’s Book of Friends makes me cry 9/10 times but I love it. The way the doumeki family continues to look after watanuki long after Shizuka has died? I’m sobbing. I’ve never recovered.

*Today’s the day! You’ve decided that you want to adopt a pair of the empireverse lamia that are at the Tails and Scales shop. Your very own Rever and Cauchemar pair to accompany you. The first step is going into to lively shop. There’s plenty of noise when you enter, a soft melody playing as background noise to the excited squeals of the more excitable bitties in the shop.

*You approach the front table of the shop, a small Lumen accompanied by a normal sized Rever sit on the counter together. They’re two of Natsume’s bitties, the Lumen (known as Dawn) smiles brightly when he sees you. His partner Saint, the Rever, gives a small wave before slithering further down the counter to tap a small bell.

“Just a moment!”

*Cries a bubbly voice from nearby as Nataume comes out of another room. Dawn fawns under whatever attention you give him as Natsume approaches, red gaze focusing on you with friendliness. She holds out a hand to the counter, both Dawn and Saint going up her arm and resting on her shoulders.

“Welcome to Tails and Scales! How can I help you?”

*You explain to her why you’ve come to the shop and her tails wiggle behind her at the mention of wanting to adopt.

“You want to adopt a Rever and Cauchemar? Perfect! Follow me, and I’ll gladly introduce you to all of them.”

*She leads you through the shop, most of the lamia you pass watching you with curiosity. She stops in front of a few areas that the Revers and Cauchemars typically lounge. A few nests are scattered around and the lamias regard the both of you with interest. Natsume moves to take a seat on the floor and encourages you to do the same. Now whichever may be interested can approach you.

*She encourages you to act friendly and hold out a hand for any that like your aura. Some of the lamia watch you with curious eyes, none approaching just yet. A pair of eyes watch you from where they lounge together on a pile of small pillows in a nest.

*The Cauchemar regards you cautiously, his small hands tightening their hold on the Rever he’s with. Ever the protective one when it comes to his family. The Rever on the other hand smiles at you, watching you with curious but friendly eyes. The Rever is the first to move from where he is, moving out of the Cauchemar’s hold. He slithers towards your outstretched hand and reaches out one of his own that presses against one of your fingers.

*The Cauchemar he was with watches the two of you with narrowed eyes, not necessarily agitated or threatened, but more so cautious. But he eventually moves closer when the Rever looks back to him. He avoids your eyes with a bit of pompous attitude, crossing his arms when he’s close enough. But he can’t help his curiosity as he looks up to you.

*The Rever gives him a playful nudge, grinning. The Cauchemar huffs a bit before seemingly puffing our his chest, making himself look bigger. He doesn’t want to appear weak after all, he’s a prideful lamia! But with your friendly attitude and reassurance from the Rever, he reaches out his own hand to yours.

*Natsume lets the three of your get acquainted a little longer, keeping an eye on the situation as the two lamia approve of head pats and even moving to your lap after a few minutes. She smiles widely at the sight and moves to stand.

“Well, it looks like you’ve found your pair! And they seem to like you too. Why don’t we go back to the front counter and we can get the adoption papers figured out.”

*Congratulations! You’re now the owner of a Rever and Cauchemar pair!

Kitamoto, Nishimura, and Sasada

Natsume’s relationship with the “normal” kids is so sweet and important to Natsume’s growth.

Most children Natsume grew up with bullied and isolated him for being “weird,” and reacting to things they can’t see. Before moving to his current home, only Yukito, a kind and perceptive girl from his previous home, showed him understanding and friendship. But he is accepted by others much more in his new home of Yatsurhara.

Natsume’s abilities and the way people react to them is framed in the same way people react to anyone with a mental illness. The way Natsume is treated is frighteningly similar to how people who don’t fit the definition of “normal” in society. He is ostracised for years by his peers and adults for being different.

Kitamoto and Nishimura don’t understand what’s going on with Natsume, but they still accept him as part of their group. They were the kids we see in the first episode, who were confused by Natsume’s behaviour. But in the end, Kitamoto and Nishimura shrug off Natsume’s random screaming, fainting, and frequent accidents. They still like Natsume because they recognise that he’s still a great guy!

The episode that focuses in on those two in season 6, shows that they thought Natsume was kind of stand-offish before, but they realised he was just shy and reserved. So they went of their way to show him things he missed out on when he was younger. They even teach him to ride a bike so they could spend more time with him. They see Natsume for the person he is, rather than judging him for his odd behaviour.

Sasada, on the other hand, figures out pretty quickly that Natsume can see youkai. And she actually thinks it’s really cool! The problem is that Sasada is very pushy about Natsume letting her in on his secret, following him, and insisting he tells her what kind youkai adventure he’s on. She even takes Nyanko hostage at one point! 

Natsume, who is very reserved and has difficulty opening up to people, is understandably nervous and intimidated by her behaviour. Tanuma and Taki, who become his only peers in the know about Natsume’s youkai shenanigans, gently steer Sasada away from Natsume. They understand how difficult he finds it to talk let people in, and now how daunting Sasada’s approach must be for him. 

But Sasada thankfully does mellow out in time, leaving him Natsume to live his youkai filled life without questioning him. And she becomes part of Nataume’s close-knit group of friends. In the original manga, Sasada doesn’t appear again after “Shigure and the Girl.” 

But in the anime adaptation, she gradually becomes important to Natsume as one of the people who accept and care about him for who he is. 

And I love her inclusion and importance to Natsume, even if I wish that the anime would do more with her character in future.

While you could say that Natsume’s relationship to the “normal” children is less central than his relationships with other characters, they’re still important to his growth and healing after years of loneliness and isolation due to being “different” from other kids.
