I'm going to combine all of my thoughts about Natalie El-Khoury from Big Mouth / Human Resources into a single post because I'm just so soft over this character:
- Natalie doesn't have to be especially sweet or soft or feminine to be recognized and validated as a girl by the narrative. She's crass and strange and causes problems on purpose for fun; she hides a cup of shit in the rafters of the boys' cabin after they were dicks to her and decides on a whim to see how many eggs she can fit into her mouth. The other kids try to box her into a very narrow idea of what you have to do to be a girl, but they're expressly demonstrated to be in the wrong for this. I love that she gets to be such a weird, chaotic little girl. Natalie is definitely not the uwu soft pure bean trope trans kids get shoved into sometimes; she just gets to be a kid in a world where all the kids regardless of gender get a turn being gross little monsters.
- She almost certainly chose her name because her mom (Nabilah) and older sister (Nadja) also have N names.
- She obviously loves her older sister very much regardless of how she causes problems for her on purpose, to be so excited for Nadja when she got into Berkeley she spit out all of her eggs.
- I was picturing Natalie's mother as a go-getting Karen type (more like Becca or Shannon), given how she rips the camp director a new asshole in spelling out exactly how they're going to treat Natalie now that she's transitioned. The Nabilah we meet in Human Resources is quiet and kind, which just goes to show she loves the fuck out of her daughter and only invites people to fuck around and find out where her kids are concerned.
- Natalie transitioned somewhere between the ages of 11-12, and given how advanced Yara's Alzheimer's is by the time we meet her when Natalie is ~13, I doubt Yara had any awareness of it while it was happening. Yet, when Yara crosses over and becomes a ghost, the first thing out of her mouth is, "Take care of her," meaning she immediately and unhesitatingly accepted Natalie as her granddaughter.
- Natalie takes after Yara and her wild youth, much more so than her more restrained older sister Nadja. Yara being impressed by Natalie taking her out to buy drinks and smokes and remarking, "I like this girl!" shows how Yara and Natalie both were robbed of the special connection they would have had if life had worked out differently. Yara was 100% also a shitrat at Natalie's age.
- She acts like she's embarrassed to be seen with her grandmother in her current state, but what she does is help Yara feel more like herself again and listen to her about what she wants. I think deep down, Natalie thinks it's unfair her parents won't just give Yara candy like she's asking for, and she knows Yara would hate that tracksuit after a lifetime of wearing Chanel. Getting candy with "Lindsay Lohan" is the last good day Yara has, and Natalie is the one who gives it to her!
- She gets into a LOT of trouble, but she also doesn't hesitate to immediately call her dad for help the minute something goes wrong and she doesn't know what to do. She's tipsy and high when her dad shows up and she still tells him everything. Amir and Natalie obviously have the kind of relationship where she knows he'll help her and he'll come get her no questions asked no matter what.
- Natalie mentions it was hard for her parents to embrace her transition at first, but by the time we meet the El-Khoury family again in Human Resources, they wholeheartedly embrace Natalie as a girl. Even at maximum pissed (side note: when Amir yells, "I am MAD as MAX!" it undoes me), Amir calls her "young lady," which speaks to embracing her so deeply and thoroughly his INSTINCT is now to see her through the lens of being his daughter.
Shitrat (affectionate) I just love her and her family so much

what are your favorite arabic songs 🥰
Ohhh boy, this is about to get embarrassing so buckle up. If you’re Arab then you’ll recognize these as oldies that only parents/grandparents listen to, and if you’re not Arab but just curious… these songs are oldies that mostly parents and grandparents listen to, but I love them. They’re so poetic and the music and general sound of them kill me tbh.
Ahwak - Abdel Halim Hafez
Ana Lak Ala Toul - Abdel Halim Hafez
Khayef Marra Aheb - Abdel Halim Hafez
Gana El Hawa - Abdel Halim Hafez
Fayrouz - Ana La Habibi
Alby We Moftaho
صباح - زي العسل
محمد عبده - وين أحب الليلة
Natalie - Mayyada Bsailees
حسام تحسين بك - نتالي
Kadim Al Saher Ahebini
Kadim Al Saher - Hal Indaki Shak
Marwan Khoury - Kel El Qasayed
لطيفة - أمنلي بيت
مياده بسيليس - كذبك حلو
I can keep going, I love old Arabic music so so much 🥺💕
Edit: None of the links seem to be working on the mobile app, even tho they’re working fine on desktop so apologies for that. It’s definitely worth copying the titles into youtube tho!

Every number ending on 6?
Thank you! Here I go!
6) Favourite voice type?
Not gonna lie, I really like the soprano type, especially coloratura and lyric.
16) Create a hypothetical opera adaptation off of a classic novel (and cast it if you want!)
Honestly, I’d like to see Anne of Green Gables become an opera; I think it would be so much fun to watch!
As for casting:
- Anne Shirley: soprano, either lyric or coloratura (Lisette Oropesa, Simone Osborne, or Joyce El-Khoury)
- Marilla Cuthbert: mezzo-soprano (Emily D’Angelo)
- Matthew Cuthbert: a very fatherly baritone (either Gerald Finley or Quinn Kelsey)
- Gilbert Blythe: tenor, without a doubt (maybe Michael Fabiano; he’s got that boyish kinda look)
- Diana Barry: a mezzo best friend! (Isabel Leonard, perhaps?)
26) Favourite soprano singer?
I actually have a couple, to be honest. For coloratura, I’d definitely say Lisette Oropesa, Natalie Dessay, Diana Damrau, and this one French singer called Sabine Devieilhe, she’s got such a pretty voice. For lyric singers, I like Joyce El-Khoury. And for the more spinto voices, I’d say Galina Vishnevskaya.
36) Favourite opera trope?
Honestly, I like the emotional death scenes where a character dies in another’s arms, or the two main characters die in each other’s arms.
46) An opera you love more for the plot than for the music?
Otello, I have to say. Then again, I’m a huge Shakespeare lover (Othello is my favourite play by him), and while I like the opera’s music as well, I also quite like how Verdi adapted the play quite faithfully, especially with how he portrayed Iago.
Thanks for sending these questions! They were a lot of fun! :D
