A small misunderstanding turns into a full blown fight about basic values. A little disagreement in a small town reaches the news, is blown out of proportion, and ruins careers, lives, and friendships. Sound familiar? In Avi’s book Nothing But The Truth, a 9th grader, Philip Malloy, sings the national anthem, and gets in trouble. The only thing that wasn’t clear to outsiders was that he was in trouble for singing during a time when they were supposed to be respectfully quiet, not that he was being punished for his “patriotism.” His homeroom and English teacher, Miss Narwin, whom he disliked, was shunned by the American public and was shamed into resigning. Philip’s friends, who liked Miss Narwin, grew away from him, and he got so much attention he was miserable enough to move schools. Because of the attention to the supposed negative thing the school did, the people of Harrison rejected spending more money on school funding. All of this could have been avoided, had anyone along the way bothered to figure out the truth. In this essay I’ll explain how each four of the characters in the blame chart are responsible for the incident turning into a national scandal, and how it could have been prevented. Philip isn’t on there, because although he did have a part in the fault, his control over the situation spiraled into practically nothing very quickly, and there were other factors that make it much more understandable why he acted with a lack of maturity and responsibility.
