It makes me sad when I look at Ace Attorney fandom stuff from 10-15 years ago and see how much more comparatively chill and accepting they were of different ships from the most popular ones back then. It wasn’t perfect or free of discourse, obviously, but at least fans could mostly get away with shipping that stuff without getting called horrible people, unlike today where the Ace Attorney fandom is determined to bully anyone who dare ship the Unacceptable Stuff™️ out of the fandom (ESPECIALLY on aatwt my goodness). I know this isn’t just me because I’ve seen even certain older fans note this and say stuff like “Wow I’ve been in the Ace Attorney fandom for years and back then there used to be so many Narumayos and ppl who shipped so-and-so in het I’m so glad these are no longer acceptable we’ve come so far” WRONG. The fandom has turned into a hivemind who think it’s acceptable to unperson others over ships and will sooner sympathize with one who harasses another over a Bad Ship than the one getting harassed because how dare they ship outside the sacred stuff. You really think it’s a good thing the AA fandom environment has gotten tyrannical about what you’re allowed to ship? Old Ace Attorney Shipping Fandom was FAR from perfect, but if your reasons for why it was bad or worse than now are “ships I dislike were allowed to exist” hoooooo boy.

Ace Attorney is a real progressive franchise considering the time it was created in, I mean like.. - Platonic relationships between a guy character and a girl character, in any other media it would've been a no-brainer to have two major characters of the opposite sex end up together and smooch, It's a byproduct of heteronormativity (and also amatonormativity). This has happened so much that even a movie scene of two characters of the opposite sex looking at eachother has a mainstream audience wondering "Are they gonna get together?". Even speaking as a Narumayo shipper I can set aside my ship-tinted glasses and see both Maya and Phoenix's relationship through a platonic lens and it's amazing. There's been multiple instances of Maya being in grave danger and Phoenix risking it all probably in the verge of crying himself too just to get her out of there and not once did the writers attempt to suggest anything between them two. Even so, Ace Attorney is the type of game to take a back seat on romance as that's not really the point of the story. So for us people playing the games, pretty much every interaction between the major characters of the game are subtle and up to interpretation (Yes, even the "Unnecessary feelings" line.). - Excellent female characters, I know that "Good Female characters" is an incredibly low bar because "Good characters" are like the bare minimum things you're supposed to have in a Good story but it was 2001 so 🤷‍♂️ I've seen this take before but Ace Attorney is a story about it's female cast, they're filled with so much richness and depth it's insane (Franziska is SO UNDERRATED in the other half of the fandom). Mia also being a Mentor for Phoenix is also great, how often do you get to see instances in stories where male characters would learn under female characters and learn under them? And look up to them? I'm pretty sure there's more points to bring up but i'm probably not qualified to mention it nor even detail it. Also Godot isn't sexist With that said, Shu Takumi is truely an enigma because how the hell did he make a game that gets so much stuff right and then at the same time have some handful of wrong stuff (the first thing i could think of is Acro from Turnabout Big top)

I have just read through this essay about Phoenix and Maya relationship analysis and why this pairing could be considered legitimate (with lots of evidence). So I feel incline to share this document with you. Even if you are not a shipper (I couldn't classify myself as one) I think you might gain a lot of understanding towards nick and Maya character.

This post isn't for you to try to explain me why you think there's nothing wrong with narumayo, you have your opinions and i have mine, all i want is for my boundaries to be respected.

What are your overall opinions on narumayo? Do you think it works at all?

Not my thing personally but the insane way the fandom treats Narumayo shippers has endeared me infinitely to the ship itself and people who adore it. I will defend Narumayo and the people who love it to my fucking grave.

One thing I love about Narumayo is how much fanworks about it love and care for Maya herself! She is so often shafted or misunderstood but every Narumayo I meet loves her and it shines through their art and writing. As a FranMaya, they are my sisters in arms, and I am always so happy to see fanworks that celebrate the female characters.

Narumayos you are safe here. Sorry I don't ship it but I hope you are alright with me clapping and cheering while you do.

The thing I don’t get about anti-NaruMayos is that they don’t seem to get that not all of us (I’d venture to say not most of us) ship it immediately from the first game.

Like we aren’t saying it was some kind of wild love-at-first-sight encounter when their eyes met above the dead body of Mia Fey. That’s absurd. We aren’t saying that they started Wright and Co. because of mutual romantic feelings or that they were attracted to each other in the slightest when they first met. Not even close.

Maya’s birthday appears to canonically be sometime in March/April (judging by her being 18 in Farewell My Turnabout and 19 in The Stolen Turnabout), which means she was only 6 months shy of her 18th birthday in Turnabout Sisters (which took place in September). This means that she and Phoenix met when she was less than a year away from being a legal adult. What’s more, we don’t see anything going on between them in that span of time. Nothing whatsoever. There’s no flirting and Phoenix spends a lot of the time questioning Maya’s sanity rather than have obviously affectionate feelings for her.

In other words, us NaruMayo shippers aren’t shipping them based on the first game. If there are any who do, I’ll be the first person to tell them to cut that out because yeah, it’s totally inappropriate.

But Maya was 18 years old when Pearl started going on about her and Phoenix being “special someones.” She was 19 years old when Phoenix outright flirted with her in Recipe for Turnabout (”Maybe you should quit being a spirit medium.”) and when Dahlia assumed she was Phoenix’s girlfriend.

In other words, this ship is totally legal once anything remotely indicative of mutual attraction occurs. After Maya turns 18, Phoenix doesn’t even indicate that he might have anything beyond friendly affection for her until about a month before she turns 19 (calling her the most important person to him or something like that, I don’t have the quote in front of me) and doesn’t even flirt with her until nearly a year later.

There are no red flags here or evidence of grooming or anything whatsoever to indicate that their relationship is inappropriate while Maya is still a minor and nothing to indicate that Phoenix was waiting it out until she was legal. The fact that they met when she was 17 and a half is such an insane and completely ridiculous reason to hate on us that it indicates it’s not NaruMayo people hate but that it either could potentially be canon or they just don’t personally like it.

So in conclusion, chill. Just chill. NaruMayo can’t hurt you. Let us enjoy this space too.
